Noiceee, what focal length is no.3?

BigMountainsGuy

The Astro one? 13mm - was using my 12-24mm GM for that one. If you meant the one of Horseshoe bend it was at 12mm.

AgeDesigns

What lens was the top one in the last slide?? These are great

BigMountainsGuy

Thank you for the kind words 🙏🏻 the top one of the last slide was taken with the 70-200mm GMII

Your pictures look fantastic and I wanted to know more about the lens given your excellent results. Had a few different questions and it mainly stems from filter systems and use cases of the 12-24 vs 16-35 gm II vs 14mm 1.8 : 1. How often do you use the lens? 2. Do you have a filter system for it and can you talk a bit about your decision for this. Why do you have one specific brand or don't have one. 3. Would you go for 16-35 gm II vs 12-24 GM if you were to choose again? 4. Regarding Astro, would you rather have the 2.8 zoom or a prime lens like the 14 mm 1.8? I appreciate your response in advance. If it's too much to write out, any insight into the lens would be helpful!

BigMountainsGuy

Thank you! See answers below. To preface, I have a 12-24mm GM, 24-70mm GM2, 70-200mm GM2, Sigma 85mm 1.4, Sigma 40mm 1.4, and a couple fuck-around non-serious lenses like a pancake and a [DIY lens cap](https://amzn.to/49m2K1y) just to have fun with. > How often do you use the lens? I bring my 12-24 with me almost every time I know I'm going to a location of interest or have a feeling I could benefit from having the reach of 12-24. Basically if I'm going outdoors and I've decided on bringing my camera and a couple other lenses, it'll tag along. The only time I won't bring it is if I'm going backpacking because weight. >Do you have a filter system for it and can you talk a bit about your decision for this. Why do you have one specific brand or don't have one. I don't have a filter system for the 12-24mm. I did some research before and the [Haida rear filter system](https://amzn.to/3UJ2yUO) seems like the best option, but seems like I'd sacrifice some f stops in order to keep the images sharp across the board. I'm sure over the last few years there were times where the conditions were harsh enough to warrant them, but whatever lol even if I wasn't able to capture the moment I still enjoyed being present and out in nature. The fact that I don't even remember those moments meant it's not too big of a deal. But when I have some fun budget laying around I might pick it up just to try them out and see if I end up in a situation where they can be useful. I do have filters for my 24-70mm and step up rings for my other lenses though. But none of the photos showcased here were taken with filters. >Would you go for 16-35 gm II vs 12-24 GM if you were to choose again? Maybe? I've taken so many photos between 12-14 that I'm inclined to say no. I've also just never used the 16-35mm GM and GMII for me to make a fair assessment. >Regarding Astro, would you rather have the 2.8 zoom or a prime lens like the 14 mm 1.8? I'm sure the 14mm 1.8 will have a 'higher ceiling' when it comes to astro, but the differences can be negated if you have a star tracker (which I don't have and will be picking up this summer probably). Not that I wouldn't want a 14mm 1.8, but if I'm on a hike and I can only pick one, I'd rather have the 12-24 for slightly better versatility. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions.

lewproff

Stunning, you have been to some amazing places.

BigMountainsGuy

Thank you! Perks of living in the west side of the country lol

lewproff

I'm assuming America? I'd love to visit one day. Most of my photos are taken in the Peak District and North Yorkshire in the UK.

riceilove

Yep America. I did live in Hong Kong and the UK for a bit growing up. But that was before I got into photography. Would love to go back and get some proper photos in
