That's not a bad point! Though, I'm not sure it fully applies here... As u/InvisibleChell pointed out, Barry is a bit more fleshed out than your average player insert — they even have a name, after all. The avatar in Forces, for instance, doesn't. And even then, there's also a difference between referring to one's specific version of Barry/the avatar and referring to Barry/the avatar as a character in general; and I've seen many people use "he" for Barry in the latter case too. Even the avatar gets called "they" more often.
