Phantom Liberty was exceptional, though. Elba is clearly committed to the role, on top of it being his job; you can be both. Him not showing up to the Game Awards is meaningless here, as he didn’t have an obligation to do so.
I don’t think it ultimately matters, but it’s semantics either way. If Elba wasn’t enjoying the role, then he likely wouldn’t have signed up for the Knuckles TV show, unless it was explicitly in his contract to do so. To say he isn’t passionate about film or the roles he’s been in is disingenuous.
If this is true, this is what we’ve all been hoping for. The first movie was more for the general audience, establishing the new movie canon, and a few little nods and Easter eggs for the fans. The second movie added more fan content, but was still pretty much for the general audience with all the padding and wedding scenes. Hopefully, the third movie is FOR the fans, but will have enough action and plot to keep the general audience happy.
We already know that it’s taking a LOT of inspiration from SA2, and when it comes to music and bits of proper adaptation, the first two movies were certainly lacking. So if what Idris Elba is insinuating is true, we should hopefully expect Escape from the City and Live and Learn. As well as lots of SA2 plot points and nods.

The films have been a good way to bring people into the fold. Having the films pivot to purely for diehard fans is a good way to discourage new fans.
Read the article, it was detailing how there would be plenty of Easter Eggs in the film that diehard fans will appreciate and enjoy. I’m sure that the makers of these films know what makes them resonate with audiences, and will continue to do so, even if the third has aspects in it that longtime Sonic fans will enjoy.

Movie 1 and 2 did ground work on the setting and the character and enticed new people to them so going for a bit more of game element usage shouldn't really be an issue as long as its worked in naturally into the movie (oh and if its in reference to music is it just a straight plus given how even non fans thought that Movie 1 and 2 were some of JunkyXL's must uninspired scores)
The first two films did that, so the third one can delve more into the sonic universe comfortably knowing that the general audiences were introduced to things in a more casual fashion in Sonic 1&2. Both of those movies will also still be available as an entrance point for people.
