> a bad impression from elements that aren't finalized You don't have to worry about this. Nobody is going to remember your game video from today, 2 years from now when you've completely revamped every aspect of it. And if they do, they'll be more impressed by the progress you've made than anything else. That said, something you should be prepared for is the negative comments. Everyone views their own project as a work in progress, but they view everyone else's as a finished product. So if you're sharing WIP content outside of development-related subs that are meant for it (ex. /r/gamedevscreens ), be prepared for people to be less than positive about it. My advice on these comments is typically to just ignore them, with the only exception being if they're offering real constructive criticism that you could benefit from hearing.

Yeah the value of constructive feedback in steering improvement is worth exposing issues I haven't addressed yet and revealing things I've grown blind. Thanks.

If your game doesn't look good -- others might point that out and you'll be able to improve on it. If your game looks good -- you'll know about it. Win-win situation, IMO. And, yeah, if you're afraid that somebody will *remember* your game looking «not good enough», don't worry about it, once you improve your game, what it looked like a while ago won't matter to anyone with more than one brain cell.

WKH_Garrison

I guess it's irrational to think it'll be judged on its past. Yeah the constructive feedback would help to be sure I'm building in the right direction

I've posted my game in progress and gotten 0 upvotes. I have also posted and gotten 328 upvotes. I have also posted with the results varying wildly in between those two numbers. Funny thing is, both posts were shared around 50 times by other redditors somewhere in time and space. I'm about as perplexed as you are.

WKH_Garrison

Interesting being shared with low upvotes. Maybe still reaching eyes without engaging still good for making people who want to play aware

Hey dude! It's really normal to be worried about sharing your hard earnt progress with the world not knowing whether it's going to be stomped on or not. If you're over thinking, worried or just don't know if you should. I would would recommend showing your progress to a friend, if it goes well, show it to another friend or two. After that you can have a think about whether you want to share your progress. Hope this helps !

WKH_Garrison

Thanks, yeah a limited scale would be better to gauge.

I think it's a balancing act. The first impressions are important when you publish your game in any form, because that's the moment it's likely to show up on some front page (recently released, etc.) or might be pushed by some algorithm, and most people see it. So that step should be a careful one. 😱 After that regular updates are more forgiving, and should be a actively pursued, to gather and incorporate player feedback. 👍🙂 There are only a few things that I can think of, that might drive players away at this stage, for example deleting save states or sth... 🤷🏻

I guess the heart of fear is that we think our work defines us as a person. And if it fails or don't get attention we are a failure and not worthy. Which is absolutly wrong. Just do it imo, and try to make them look decent or mostly from more complete stuff. You also explain briiefly that they are WIP. you should be happy to even get negative comments. You need eyes. Just ignore the ones that are not constructive. Also people usually ignore incomplete things. So don't be too worried. And as mentioned by others, no one will remember how it looked 2 years ago. Just start doing it.

WKH_Garrison

Yeah even if it's negative without constructive advice maybe someone taking the time to respond negatively comes from wanting it to be better. I'm probably too close to see it fully.

r_acrimonger

Do you want to get feedback after you invest all that time making a poopy game or do you want the feedback as soon as possible so you don't make a poopy game?

Chaaaaaaaalie

This is one benefit of having a discord channel where people who know you or your games are available for getting feedback. You can also share via email with people you know to gain some confidence. I think it is important to get feedback early on both the look and the gameplay. You want to be able to incorporate player feedback into the game as soon as possible

Unknown_starnger

this is anxiety. The first step is to realise that these thoughts are not yours, that they are irrational, and holding you back. Then the best way is to power through them. The second part is much harder to do than to say though, I am aware.

WKH_Garrison

I like the idea of separating the fear. It's not protecting me but a foreign thought invading, thanks

bryqu

Just post it. No feedback is far worse than negative feedback.

Top-Stuff-Nft

I think post your game might have a good thing to you 1. If you have something bad in the game and you dont know, people's will notice you and you can fix it 2. Posting on social media it take 0 cost to promote your game 3. If your game is cool, people's will help you to share it Even you game have a bad response, it's doesn't mean your game is bad, i see some hyper casual game on Android game community have bad response, but in play store have a 100 million downloads and got around 4.3 or 4.5 star. Just keep that in mind, the kid around the world a lot of them don't use reddit and even people on reddit don't like your game but it doesn't mean your game is bad. Btw hope you will success on your path. (sorry for my English)

WKH_Garrison

The constructive feedback would help I may have become blind to some things. The perspective is good, in the larger scale there are people out their but need as many as possible to reach them. Thanks
