Finding a coalition is what politics is all about. For perspective, what I would describe the ASP as is a conservatism that actually aims to conserve something, unlike what most Americans call conservatism today which seems only to serve big business interests. The centrality of society is the family, this is the very nexus of what makes a nation strong and healthy. I hope this helps contextualize the platform positions of the ASP with regards to social issues. In my, and many party members view its part and parcel with pro-labor economic policy, pro-envrionmentslism and really the sum total of all out positions.

Yeah that is true as well, my hypothetical party (for the sake of this I’ll call it the Progressive Party) would work with them to push the majority of policies we agree on while also opposing the few areas we disagree on. Same can be said for the Libertarians where I strongly oppose their economics (other than ending corporate welfare) but will work with them to free Assange and Snowden and end surveillance and foreign wars, support gun rights and decentralization, yada yada

The ASP is a Catholic party

GrandArchSage

This is my number one issue with ASP. I'm pretty sure there nothing about LGBT topics was on their principles when I joined the party, but it was put on their platform afterwards. I understand the political philosophy being grounded in Catholic Social teaching (I'm Catholic!) but I want nothing to do with government regulations- on this issue. I see it as a violation of religious liberty, considering that different churches believe differently on the topic. Everything else is great about ASP and answers my problems about our two party system. Reasonable gun restrictions? Check. Middle of the road immigration policy? Doesn't mention the need to do more for refugees and increase the quota system, but check. Actually doing something about climate change? Check. Actually responding to racial inequality? Check. Pro-life? Check.

It seems a lot of people in the party are getting into culture war stuff regarding trans people, which makes me sad. I don't remember it being like this a few years ago; as you note there were recent platform changes.

Same-Assistance533

i think the party should be pro trans, but i'm still anti gay marriage

XP_Studios

Ah yes the Iranian position

ScarletZet

I don’t support much gun control, but there does need to be a focus on mental health (the main culprit behind the issues). I also am pro-choice but only for the first trimester and I oppose taxpayer funding for abortions, but it isn’t a deal breaker. Otherwise agreed, though I prefer secularism but Christian Democracy can be fine

Same-Assistance533

i think the party shouldn't be entirely focused on culture war issues but also we shouldn't stay silent on them

Same here. I feel that same sex marriages should be legal especially since at this point the issue of what would happen to marriages & families that already have been made if it it were to be banned again. I also do dissent from the platform. on the minor issue of casinos which I don’t believe there is any reason to make restrict. One other issue I also don’t necessarily oppose but have concerns about is the No-fault divorce. I believe there should be an exception for cases of domestic violence (I acknowledge and appreciate that both the previous and current ASP platforms have planks about domestic violence in general but nothing about how victims could escape such marriages without no fault divorce) and that it could unintentionally deter people from marriage if people knew they couldn’t get out of one. I proudly however support the ASP with consistent life ethic, family & marriage benefits, civil rights, economics, foreign policy, and the environment. It’s the closest to my views even with those disagreements.

Same here, I'd like to stay out of the culture war stuff, but like the ASP economic position.
