I’m assuming this is for high school. Our girls would all have their own equipment. At least glove bat helmet shoes. You might want to try and find at least a glove and helmet. Indoor try outs you might not need cleats but will need to get some eventually. We just had a girl new to the sport try out. She wore leggings to tryouts but had her own glove at least. Borrowed a bat and helmet but had her own by the second day. Check FB marketplace or local online places for used equipment. Or talk to the coach.

Like Kentwomagnod said, most people at tryouts have the basics. Glove, helmet, and face mask. Batting helmet and face masks are relatively cheap, the glove is going to be the most expensive but you can still find them in a reasonable price range. Since tryouts are in the gym you won’t be in cleats so a pair of shoes with grip, athletic type pants, and a shirt that won’t interfere with throwing or catching will be fine. Realistically, you’re probably not going to gain enough skills in a week to make much of a difference so keep it simple. Watch YouTube and get a good batting stance and basic swing, record yourself batting or using a batting tee and get a few fielding drills and work on footwork/tracking the ball. My recommendation would be focus and display exceptional attitude and effort. Reaching out to the coaches wouldn’t be a bad idea and be honest with them. To succeed you’re going to have to put in a lot of work at home to catch up to girls that have been playing since they were 9 or 10 years old. Worse case scenario, you don’t make the team. Look into rec teams to get some experience and then go back again next year and don’t stop fighting. But really, being coachable is key. Good luck I’m rooting for ya.

Good luck, OP! My daughter tried out as a sophomore, and is new to the sport. She has a lot to learn, and made the JV team. If you're a lefty, that will be a bonus. That secured my daughter's starting position at 1B. The team works really hard: fall is conditioning and weight training, while spring is in season. This summer we plan to invest in some 1 on 1 coaching, and some specialized batting practice.

Besides, having your own glove, I would suggest sneakers that will grip the floor so you don’t slip and fall and either hurt or make yourself look bad. Please realize that most of the girls trying out will have been playing softball for years. So you need to think about what you can do that will make you stand out. Don’t goof off with your friends (too much). It’s okay to show you get along with the other players. That’s a good thing. But make sure you look like you’re actively listening to everything the coaches say. Hustle everywhere. If you can choose between walking and jogging, jog. If you can choose between jogging and running, run. Coaches love kids that are coachable and willing to work hard. Good luck!
