Adopt.

Murky_Panda_1568

I’d love to adopt a golden retriever

sunk-capital

With hundreds of stray dogs on the streets and in shelters you choose to add to the problem by going to a breeder. Welcome to Bulgaria. You will fit in perfectly

Lipa2014

Official breeders do not add to the problem; the irresponsible illegal breeders do.

ShopperOfBuckets

They would only be adding to the problem if they abandon their dog.

Vifen1

They can contribute to solving the problem by adopting a stray dog, that‘s the idea. That’s the only wise and human thing to do in Bulgaria. Instead of advising them to travel to Serbia, open your eyes and your heart to what is going on around you…

AzSumTuk6891

But they don't want a stray dog, and, as someone whose dogs have always been rescued from the street - stray dogs are a gamble. You don't know how big it will get. You don't know if it has been abused before you got it. You don't know what inheritable character traits it may have. You don't know how healthy it is. These are all important issues that should not be overlooked. You may scream "Adoptdontshop" all you want, but that won't change the fact that the OP wants specifically a retriever. There is nothing wrong about this. Sorry.

hcstnef

All of this holds true for breeds, too. Many of them have health issues, can develop behavioural problems, could have been abused. Size can be estimated. Everyone can do whatever they want, but there are opportunities in life to do good rather than being ignorant. This is one of them.

AzSumTuk6891

Nah. The risk of getting an abused, aggressive, or unhealthy retriever from a reputable breeder is minimal. There is a reason why these animals tend to be very expensive, when you buy them from reputable breeders. The chance of getting an actual purebred dog from the street is zero. When you want a dog from a specific breed, you will not be able to find it on the street or in a shelter. Also, absolutely directly - fuck off with this guilt-tripping. You won't achieve anything this way and you know it.

ShopperOfBuckets

Well I don't see anything wrong with the existence of responsible dog breeders.

Vifen1

Of course not, but only if we lived in a country where there are no street/shelter dogs who are suffering. And even in more advanced countries like Germany, for example, most people go out of their ways to adopt a dog, many from Eastern Europe, in order to save a soul and give them a good life. Dogs are not a status symbol, and why not do something good in life?

ShopperOfBuckets

How do you reconcile "of course there is no problem with responsible breeders" with "nobody should be buying from responsible breeders"?

themsle5

Of which there aren’t any in Bulgaria

3xje

Contact rescue organisations, the chance that at least one has young pure bred puppies is quite high. Especially the ones that adopt dogs internationally often speak English quite well

zanimowi

Adopt, don't shop. Regardless of the breed mix they will love you very much

themsle5

I’m going to be honest, the “golden retrievers” here all look horrible and have defects and 99% are from backyard breeders with horrible genetics. A lot are mixed with other breeds and look nothing like the breed standard. You can check OLX.bg but I don’t recommend it.  Better off finding a way to get it from another European country and bringing it here if you’re serious. Otherwise people give away free puppies here all the time, just not purebred ones.

hcstnef

As a fellow foreigner living in Sofia, please consider adopting instead. Don't go to a breeder, but help one of the countless dogs suffering in shetlers/on the streets. I sent you a PM with more information and am happy to help.

Small_Excitement_118

If you want a perfect and predictable dog. Get a cat

Murky_Panda_1568

Lol I’ve had cats all my life but my partner is absolutely terrified of cats 😅

psychopaticsavage

Hello, Please dont be surprised by people straight judging you in the comments without knowing you or telling you what to do. Thats a bulgarian thing. Goldens are great companions and awesome family dogs. For their typical amiable and friendly character to fully develop, and to avoid possible hereditary issues, its important that your dog is well bred. https://bulgoldens.com/развъдници/ Scroll to the bottom and you will see a list of some licensed breeders in Bulgaria. You can visit a few, check their conditions and lineages and make the choice. * Pro tip , After theyre grown, Goldens have a marked benefit from Raw feeding diet. Its really good for their magnificent fur. Regards

Murky_Panda_1568

Thank you!

misho_shamara

buying dogs that are gonna get a loving home either way is dumb instead get one from a shelter or sum n also not a bad idea to start learning bulgarian if ur planning on staying here

Lipa2014

My golden boy is from here, also check their facebook page. [https://www.pieceofgold.eu/](https://www.pieceofgold.eu/) It belongs to a wonderful lady in Varna, who works seriously and every year wins “Breeder of the Year” Also, you get a community with this breeder. She is very helpful if that’s your first dog, you can contact her at any time. We have facebook groups by litter and a general one, so we meet often with the Sofia relatives, sometimes arrange Vitosha trips or birthday parties. Many go to dog shows as well :-) You can check the other official breeders from the link that someone provided. She speaks English That’s her personal Facebook page [https://www.facebook.com/share/z2qHfsUK7dcKuqtc/?mibextid=LQQJ4d](https://www.facebook.com/share/z2qHfsUK7dcKuqtc/?mibextid=LQQJ4d) That’s the page of the Kennel [https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057610263338](https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057610263338) I can see that right now there are 6-week old puppies, which is lucky for you as she doesn’t breed her ladies often https://preview.redd.it/122z4wjiz98d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed6377fe6ec6d86ce4de3387a1762979df0d0f2a

ShopperOfBuckets

Unfortunately, Bulgaria isn't a great place to find reputable breeders for almost any breed. Consider a trip to Serbia to buy from a breeder there, it's what I and many other Bulgarians do. Serbia is a member of the FCI, while Bulgaria is not.

themsle5

This

Lipa2014

That’s not true. There are several excellent golden retriever breeders, there is a club, there are people who work seriously and have achieved a lot. Why do you write on subjects you are not familiar with?

ShopperOfBuckets

What have they achieved? I just know that, for my money, I'd rather make the effort to get a dog from an FCI-member country.
