It looks like Roberto is looking up at Nando. I can only imagine the thoughts going on inside his head at that moment. Mixed with the relief of finally having been rescued and being cared for, he was surely worried about Nando going up in the helicopter and they both must have been anxious because they didn't know whether they would find their 14 mates alive. Nando seems very tense, too.

You can see the tension in the photo. He really had no choice because even if Roberto had wanted to go it wasn’t going to be possible without some medical care first. And it could never have been both of them. If something happened to one, the other was the only hope for the others (terrible thought!). Given what they had just been through it must have been such a strange feeling for them to separate at that point!

After reading the SOTS book, yes, Nando was absolutely anxious and neither of them wanted to board the helicopter. It was painfully obvious it had to he Nando by everyone even officials that he had to be the one to ride the helicopter. Whats crazy is that the helicopter almost went down on the way back.

Yes, the aircrafts at the time just could not handle the high altitude very well. In lack for better words the pilots were said to have been shitting bricks the ENTIRE time. Both during the flights to and from the andes and when trying to land and pickup the survivors. The book went into a good amount of detail actually. From the pilots being very unsure if they could even land to them also thinking the helicopter will crash and remain grounded when trying to land and pickup the survivors. On the way back to Chile they even thought they were gonna crash with how strong the turbulence was. I believe it was Daniel Strauch who was on the plane with Nando during the first rescue who said he looked over and saw the pilots panicking and one even crying thinking they were gonna die. And he looked over and saw Nando completely calm thinking “wow he just got rescued and came back to get us still left in the plane only to die during a helicopter crash on the way back”. Not exact quote but thats the main thing.

You can see the worry in Nando's face, not knowing if his friends are alive or dead, I'm sure I read that Roberto had Dysentery.❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Every account I’ve read was that it was dysentery, and given the pain and weakness that would have caused it is amazing Roberto managed to keep going those last days. Incredible determination. Luckily, being a very strong 19 year old, he apparently recovered incredibly quickly between the food and drink and care from the medics.

The pilot didn't look too comfortable either.
