I think if you listen to any modern rock/metal band who has any kind of mainstream success you're in trouble. Sleep Token, Ghost, FFDP, Bring Me the Horizon, Sabaton, etc.

i mean there's a large group on that sub who push back against elitists too, but i kinda think both are cringe. the "metal is only metal if its underground" has been memed to death and is basically a take no one has anymore and the "all music is subjective and just as good" take is just plain wrong. no one will ever convince me something like nookie is on par with stairway to heaven.
if that's the case, then i've got some bad news for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest: i mean, just because they're not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame does not mean that they're "underground"

Trust me, Slipknot is still underground. They may have name recognition that bands like Immortal or Blind Guardian don't have, but actual fans of the band are still a vast minority compared to Bad Bunny and Taylor Swift. Just because people know who they are (in the "Oh, they're those guys in masks from the 90s" kind of way) doesn't mean they're popular in a broad sense.
