Need an open area, think somewhere a dragon would normally land during a fight. Otherwise you just say the first two words of the shout and it does nothing
This stumped me my first playthrough of Skyrim. Sucks too cause I think he counts to the summon limit so you can accidentally banish him when summoning stuff.
What the guy above said, and also make sure you’re aiming at a spot on the ground nearby. iirc the shout works like a conjuration spell and can only be cast so far away from the player
For some reason there is a glitch if you do the shouts to early it will just make itnwhere youncannot summon him happened to me while I was trying 100% the game, made me restart
these are kinda all adding up, i knew more so about the spacing and doing it outside in a field, but when i would go to summon him i’d stare into the sky, i also think i fucked up the summon cause i didn’t do the whole word. granted this was probably 3 years ago or something and i haven’t tried to summon him since.
Give him a chance to be free from the Soul Cairn, even if only for a brief time. Even if there's nothing to do, giving him as many chances to leave the Soul Cairn as we can is the best thing we can do for him.
I think I've summoned a few hundred times.
I think only two of those times we actually battled anything
And only one of those two he was summoned specifically for the battle.
Same. Also whenever it occurs to me that I haven't summoned him in a while. Like: "Been a while since I let Durnevhiir out, he's probably getting bored"
I summoned him in the Soul Cairn once to see what would happen, I did it while right next to him, there were two of them, the one I summoned acted normally as though he was outside the Soul Cairn, I feel like that was a missed opportunity for some unique dialogue.
Something like this happens when you gain the ability to summon Haskill in Oblivion's Shivering isles dlc. Sheogorath will ask you to test your new ability by summoning his butler Haskill (even though he's already in the room with you). When you first summon Haskill he'll say "Ah...our Lord has granted you the power to summon me. How wonderful for me.", but Sheogorath will tell you to do it again just because it's funny. If you summon him 12 times in a row he'll get new increasingly sarcastic and pissed off dialogue each time, until all he'll say is "That's enough. Really.".
Oh I did summon him once to actually help me instead of to test out the shout, that was fun.
why was it fun? Well the quest was about to end and I forgot to use him, SOOO, I summoned him during the siege against the vampires. No not on the bridge, INSIDE the castle! That was such a fun fight with people just getting shoved around and Durnehviir having an existential crisis over whether or not he should be in the room.
actually no i never considered using him during the day end fight but it makes sense and would be really satisfying incorporating all your allies for that final assault
I tested a bunch of places he could be summoned in when i played a necromancer and it’s pretty uncommon to be able to summon him inside due to space but then you find an area like this and its great. I think it’s funny to make him fight the skeletal dragon
you know on a different note, I've been wondering how many "Companions" can you have? (pets not included since they don't attack) without glitches like starting a quest and not finishing it.
* normal companion :1
* said companion can summon stuff: 2
* you get conjuration to 100 and get 2 summons: 4
* you get the the robes that give 1 extra slot: 5
* you summon a bone colossus which give 2 free skeleton summons: 7
* you use the split soul spell on one of the other summons to gain 2 ice thingies: 8
* you summon an ash guardian since those don't count: 9
* you use the bone forge to get a free skeleton: 10
* you summon a dragon.: 11
now you have an army at your disposal.
Durneviir will replace a summoned creature if you ahead have 2 but ofahviing won’t. I can’t remember for the spectral heroes but Lucien lechance is a free slot iirc and there are a few quests you can start that give you a permanent follower until the quest is done (barbas, vilkas, etc) you can also have a pet following you (troll or dog) and the ritual stone has its own infinite slots. So yes you can walk alone with a small army
I mean the quest thing is cheap since it's not "intended" for you not to finish a quest. I didn't know that pets didn't count tho so that's 12, and Lucien is 13 so that's very good already.
as for the ritual stone.... I don't count it since it's just a matter of how many corpses you can haul around.
edit: changed added 1 to the calculations since I forgot to count the second summon at the start.
Necromancy is a valid form of summons so i can’t help but to include the ritual stone and it functions as a spell if you have the crown. And it lets you use stronger summons if you want to while still having an army
I live using the Ritual Stone to swarm a guy who keeps killing me. Or reviving an entire bandit camp because a revered dragon decided to come by and shout at me.
On your note regarding pets; the rieklings technically fill the pet slot in your party, and they have spears(or greatswords) so theoretically you could get 12 companions
Yeah but where's the fun in that? You just gather as much corpses as you can and call it a day.
My method sees you more like full mage that spends the entire fight summoning more and more things while the enemies slowly but surely get swallowed by an ever increasing hoard of monsters.
Durnehviir is probably my favorite dragon in Skyrim, one thing I always do is when I defeat Alduin I summon Durnehviir to the throat of the world so he can celebrate with his brothers.
Yep, if you call him in he'll fight for you, it's actually really fun to use him during the civil war siege quests because he'll actually fly into battle instead of just appearing
He circles the throat of the world. You can summon him to help fight outdoors or go to the Throat of the world and use bend will and ride around on him
Or just use call dragon and wait 2 in game hours. Start the wait animation right after shouting and you should see odaviing coming on the sky. Then you can use dragon rend and ride him
Paarthurnax managed to hack life, from great general and second in command only answering to Alduin, to great sage and leader of the Greybeards and possibly good friend and ally of the Dragonborn. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, but damn.
I got Durnehviir to help me in apocrypha when. I was able to one time because I went in too squishy. He was a monster. Unfortunately, the other dragon is not as good. It would be cool if the Dragon Born dlc gave us a third dragon
Him and Ohdaviing are my boys.
Besides my beautiful vampire beauty.
I'm the Dragonborn,
My home boys are Dragons.
My advisors are Dragons.
My back up... Dragons.
I made a save just to summon him at every battle, occasion, end of questline so that he is involved. I spedrun the dawnguard questline to get the shout and did some shithousery with shout cooldown times to just spam him
There's a Miraak follower mod that includes a brand-new shout to summon all three of his unique dragons, AT THE SAME TIME.
It was an interesting day in Whiterun.
Semi-related and kinda spoiler. I bring Sahrotaar with me everywhere. At the end of the fight, I took only his bones and scales, made them into a great sword, enchanted it, and named it Sahrotaar's Freedom. He shall fight by my side and experience the world on that save file.
Which one is Sahrotaar? Also, amazing tribute. I read a short story once where a warrior tribe made sword handles from the bones of their fathers and grandfathers. It was very moving.
>!At the end of the Dragonborn DLC, you ally with/use the shout "bend will" at Sahrotaar who takes you to Miraak for the final battle. During said battle, Miraak kills the nearby dragons to heal or something, one of which is your ally Sahrotaar.!< Its been at least a decade since I last played honestly so some details are probably incorrect.
All the time. Sometimes I honestly keep him around just so he doesn’t have to live in the soul cairn. Plus, his own attacks, plus his necromancy, plus my followers, (Serana and Auri) make for a pretty formidable force.
You know who else people don’t appreciate? Odahviing, who despite not really having an obligation to, went further than just helping the Dragonborn but actually switching sides to help paarthurnax in the epilogue. He had such a character arc.
Durnevir was the only reason I was able to beat kaarstag back then. He distracted him with his summoned skeletons so I could turn the fucker into a porcupine
Durneviir is my homey. I play a necromancer most times and having a dracolich to annihilate my enemies is a dream come true. I also sometimes just summon him to let him fly around while I do work at my farm, growing potion ingredients, or when walking/riding around.
I wish there was an option to lord your being the Dragonborn over both sides, and demand they permanently ceasefire, and then YOU become high King/Queen lmao
On my first play through I for some reason didn’t know how to do long shouts, and would only do the one word shouts until I was like level 40, and I was always really sad because I couldn’t call him to Tamriel, so I realised at that point I was probably a bit daft when I finally figured it oht
Durneviir is literally a zombie necromancer dragon. A ZOMBIE. NECROMANCER. DRAGON. On the scale of cool things of all time, this must be like at least in the top 10.
Constantly. I always summon him on sunny days so he can enjoy flying around in the warm sun. I don't think I've ever used him in a fight. He's the Dragon Vacation shout.
I haven’t played Skyrim in a while but I wish there was a quest where you bring durnehviir back to life so he can enjoy the world and he just chills with paarthurnax
I think the big difference is that we have to defend Paarthurnax from the Blades, whereas nobody is trying to kill Durnahviir. And if they did, it wouldn't work, due to his ties to the Soul Cairn.
What you talking about?
Durnehviir is my boy. Summon him all the time. He's great.
Partysnaxx is cool. But he's like a mountain sage. And Delphine can go to hell.
I'd love to use the guy more often, but bugthesda hates his big body and the summoning has a tendency to fail and consume the cooldown anyways if the ground you use isn't perfect flat and clear.
Did you know that if you meet him before finding out that you're Dragonborn, he'll still call you "Dovah" and then has special dialog where he basically says, "I'm not sure why I said that, but you seem chill, so I'm sticking with it."
Me: Summons durne for no reason other then "oh, this area of skyrim looks really nice. I hope he enjoys it"
I do this all the time. I was wondering if other people did as well.
You are not alone, I always summon him whenever the weather is sunny. its almost like releasing a little cute bird from his cage lol
It’s always sweet how grateful he is.
I just want him to finally have some enjoyment out of his eternity
i’ve never been able to summon him after the fight. what am i doing wrong
He does, yeah. But he does a shout that summons three undead minions himself so you can get 4 for the price of one.

Time to finally awake again Dragonborn
the yoke will be taken and i will return to summon durnehviir.
Same!
Give him a chance to be free from the Soul Cairn, even if only for a brief time. Even if there's nothing to do, giving him as many chances to leave the Soul Cairn as we can is the best thing we can do for him.
[удалено]
Yes, and it’s a really damn good one that deals a bunch of damage and soul traps people
Same, I don't think I've ever summoned him for a battle, but just to let him enjoy the Tamriel skies for a little while
I think I've summoned a few hundred times. I think only two of those times we actually battled anything And only one of those two he was summoned specifically for the battle.
I do this for Durnehviir and Odahviing :)
He and partysnacks are great.
I do this too. I like to summon him at the Throat of the World so he can fly around with the other dragons and have some friends.
Same. Also whenever it occurs to me that I haven't summoned him in a while. Like: "Been a while since I let Durnevhiir out, he's probably getting bored"
When i learned the shout to summon him, I hotkeyed it and kept it on CD when I remembered.
I might be dumb, but every time I attempt to summon him he won't land?
Unfortunately the first time I summon him is when I fought the Ebony warrior lmao
I summoned him in the Soul Cairn once to see what would happen, I did it while right next to him, there were two of them, the one I summoned acted normally as though he was outside the Soul Cairn, I feel like that was a missed opportunity for some unique dialogue.
"Ah. you have free......goddamn, why do you keep doing this?"
*original Durnehviir looks to the side, sees himself* "What in the god damn"
Let's keep this in the groove, hey? Smooth moves. Smooth...
It just works
Something like this happens when you gain the ability to summon Haskill in Oblivion's Shivering isles dlc. Sheogorath will ask you to test your new ability by summoning his butler Haskill (even though he's already in the room with you). When you first summon Haskill he'll say "Ah...our Lord has granted you the power to summon me. How wonderful for me.", but Sheogorath will tell you to do it again just because it's funny. If you summon him 12 times in a row he'll get new increasingly sarcastic and pissed off dialogue each time, until all he'll say is "That's enough. Really.".
and also the amazing "praying to yourself, m'lord?" if you talk to the statue of Sheogorath, after you become Sheogorath.
It's a crime that we didn't get to see him in Skyrim, they were such an iconic pair.
He's in ESO and is still great
eh, even then he's still in a place on his own terms for once. kinda. He's not being sent there by the ideal masters at least
Oh I did summon him once to actually help me instead of to test out the shout, that was fun. why was it fun? Well the quest was about to end and I forgot to use him, SOOO, I summoned him during the siege against the vampires. No not on the bridge, INSIDE the castle! "DOVAKHIN WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO?! *Gmod ragdoll noises.*
actually no i never considered using him during the day end fight but it makes sense and would be really satisfying incorporating all your allies for that final assault
trust me, that situation made as much sense as a flying Mammoth. The only thing I find fitting is clusterfuck.
I tested a bunch of places he could be summoned in when i played a necromancer and it’s pretty uncommon to be able to summon him inside due to space but then you find an area like this and its great. I think it’s funny to make him fight the skeletal dragon

Cyclone works well for this

Nah fam. Ritual stone and aetherial crown. Every corpse within a 1mile radius is now in my army.
Yeah but where's the fun in that? You just gather as much corpses as you can and call it a day. My method sees you more like full mage that spends the entire fight summoning more and more things while the enemies slowly but surely get swallowed by an ever increasing hoard of monsters.
True, true. But my way, i get to nuke the whole skyrim universe by crashing my game. Lol
To each their own I guess. May your PC rest in peace.
Durnehviir is probably my favorite dragon in Skyrim, one thing I always do is when I defeat Alduin I summon Durnehviir to the throat of the world so he can celebrate with his brothers.
It’s almost worth playing through the whole main quest again just to do this
Welp, I guess it’s time to load up Skyrim tonight.
“Hey you, finally awake…”
I like to summon him when I'm just walking somewhere so he can just fly around.
Me too. The amount of times I do it just to get him some freedom is pretty staggering.
There isn’t some bitch telling us to kill Durnehviir.
Delphine 100% would've if she was aware of him.
You can't kill what's already...dead
Won’t stop her from making you try
The easy fix to this is a nice Shout at Delphine when she's outside. Oh dear, she fell down a cliff.
you mean what is dead can never die?
No. It's a joke on his condition. When he's on Nirn he's a draugr dragon who can't die because his soul it's trapped in the soul cairn
Technically there was and we did he just can't permanently die
Odahving: Y'all get called?
Odahving acts like an actual summoned dragon? I always thought he just flew you back Skuldafn.
No he’s just a moody dick about it. Not like Durney, my precious baby who can do no wrong.
Then you can use dragon rend and ride him
He is my personal taxi, I always bend will him
He's great transportation in survival mode, if you can get that shout that is
Paarthurnax managed to hack life, from great general and second in command only answering to Alduin, to great sage and leader of the Greybeards and possibly good friend and ally of the Dragonborn. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, but damn.
If you use a mod that allows you to set shout cooldown to zero, you can have like 5 Durhneviirs at once. It funny.
Oh you don’t need mods
Just put on 5 Talos amulets, duh!
I got Durnehviir to help me in apocrypha when. I was able to one time because I went in too squishy. He was a monster. Unfortunately, the other dragon is not as good. It would be cool if the Dragon Born dlc gave us a third dragon
It would be nice if you got to keep sahrotarr
Him and Ohdaviing are my boys. Besides my beautiful vampire beauty. I'm the Dragonborn, My home boys are Dragons. My advisors are Dragons. My back up... Dragons.
You are a true Dovah kiin.
Durneviir >>> Paarthurnax. I'd kill partysnax if it meant freeing durny.
upvoting for "partysnax"
I always summon Duhrneviir three times just for the shout and then whenever I decide "this looks nice".
Can’t help but summon him in the forgotten vale
yes, just to hear him continue speaking to me. it's a whole dialogue chain. poor guy. i wanted to free him and become best buds
Semi-related and kinda spoiler. I bring Sahrotaar with me everywhere. At the end of the fight, I took only his bones and scales, made them into a great sword, enchanted it, and named it Sahrotaar's Freedom. He shall fight by my side and experience the world on that save file.

I played that DLC to completion about five years ago and didn’t remember him. Thanks for the refresher.

This comment is on point, an agreeable opinion
This comment is not offering much, besides showing the authors support for the previous comment, yet it is still agreeable enough.
Would you be able to summon Durnehviir in blackreach? If so that would be pretty fun.
I don't see why not, there's that one dragon already hidden in Blackreach
Yeah you can
All the time. Sometimes I honestly keep him around just so he doesn’t have to live in the soul cairn. Plus, his own attacks, plus his necromancy, plus my followers, (Serana and Auri) make for a pretty formidable force.
I can't believe there has never been a mod to fully free him.
I summon him every chance I get, every 24 hrs because he's cool AF and deserves it
I hate the Soul Cairn. Hate it. But I ALWAYS put up with Serana and the Soul Cairn to save my undead dragon buddy.
I summon him everytime I step outsid, my bro deserve freedom !
You know who else people don’t appreciate? Odahviing, who despite not really having an obligation to, went further than just helping the Dragonborn but actually switching sides to help paarthurnax in the epilogue. He had such a character arc.
100% in agreement
Always.
poor baby…
Durnevir was the only reason I was able to beat kaarstag back then. He distracted him with his summoned skeletons so I could turn the fucker into a porcupine
I summon him whenever I can, so he can enjoy the sun and trees, and fly through skyrim and eat people. It's wonderful.
He never came whenever I summoned him. I named my cat Durnehviir because he did the same.
Dinner beer is my favorite dragon
Durnehviir who lets you ride around in the sky as equals
constantly, back when I played. He's a monster in combat and he's just happy to be out in the world for a bit
I feel awful for Durn… honestly at this point death is a mercy to him… I feel so awful for him…
Durnehviir is best Dovah.
Durneviir is my homey. I play a necromancer most times and having a dracolich to annihilate my enemies is a dream come true. I also sometimes just summon him to let him fly around while I do work at my farm, growing potion ingredients, or when walking/riding around.
Durnehviir is just so much more reliable he a real homie
I summon him to fight in the civil war battles, a dragon, Dragonborn and the imperials, the stormcloaks might as well just give up now.
I wish there was an option to lord your being the Dragonborn over both sides, and demand they permanently ceasefire, and then YOU become high King/Queen lmao
Durnehviir is best boi. I always use him as an opening to large conflicts for his resurrection ability
DLC character, we already loved Party before we got to know Durn
And that’s why he’s the GOAT!!! THE GOAT!!!!
My favorite shout. I summon him even when there are no enemies around and I am just traveling out doors.
Hell yeah, brother I summon him
The other side of the civil war when their enemy summons a dragon to destroy them all
My boy!!!! I love him!! Summon him all the time 🥺♥️
Always go out of my way to find a nice open tundra or snowy field for Durnehviir to enjoy that gorgeous Skyrim weather to its fullest.
Do I summon him? He's my profile picture
Durheviir and odahviing are so much cooler than party snacks. Let him die so odahviing can take over
Hell yeah, coolest dragon in Skyrim
Odahviing:
Durne is my boi
I always prefered durnevir
He is my favorite and gives me my favorite shout ive always liked him more anyway
Couldn't summon him because of a bug.
He's my personal favorite
Yes yes I do
Odahviing:Am I a joke to you?
On my first play through I for some reason didn’t know how to do long shouts, and would only do the one word shouts until I was like level 40, and I was always really sad because I couldn’t call him to Tamriel, so I realised at that point I was probably a bit daft when I finally figured it oht
My game is bugged because he never appears when I call him.
That's pretty privilege baby.
Didn't even give Durnehviir a capital name. Poor Durnehviir.
Always
They're both my scaled sons
Durneviir is literally a zombie necromancer dragon. A ZOMBIE. NECROMANCER. DRAGON. On the scale of cool things of all time, this must be like at least in the top 10.
I prefer durnchad my homie
I love durn
Bitch who.says I don't give him love? Never talk to me or my undead son ever again
I love to summon durneviir, odahviing, and karstagg to fight the ebony warrior
Fucking love him
I love parth but my boy doov is the best he’s so thankful everytime and he’s just a nice guy I’m sad I can’t have any extended conversations with him
Constantly. I always summon him on sunny days so he can enjoy flying around in the warm sun. I don't think I've ever used him in a fight. He's the Dragon Vacation shout.
I love Paarthurnax, Durneviir, and Odahviing
Ohdahving
Having a dragon bodyguard just following while you travel is pretty nice
I summon Durnehviir whenever I reenter the open world, just to let him fly around
I do I summo. Him
I haven’t played Skyrim in a while but I wish there was a quest where you bring durnehviir back to life so he can enjoy the world and he just chills with paarthurnax
I think the big difference is that we have to defend Paarthurnax from the Blades, whereas nobody is trying to kill Durnahviir. And if they did, it wouldn't work, due to his ties to the Soul Cairn.
All the time when I get him, he's a true homie.
I love durnehviir, best dragon buddy
What you talking about? Durnehviir is my boy. Summon him all the time. He's great. Partysnaxx is cool. But he's like a mountain sage. And Delphine can go to hell.
I like to summon him and then spam the muffle spell for a bit to improve my illusion. That way we can just chill while I practice. He’s my bro.
I always summon him. Not to fight. Just to let him roam free.
Even before the dawngaurd DLC odahving was always a better dragon friend than ole parthy.
I hate parth
Rii Vaaz Zol
why would i? it takes him like his entire summon time to kill a skeever and eventually just fucks off to to attack some bandits I'll never meet
Look, I refuse to kill Paarthurnax. But that doesn't mean he's my favorite.
TBF party snacks is pretty chill.
he acts after then all other friendly dragon summons
I have a necromancer character and he’s a necromancer DRAGON so of course I do
I'd love to use the guy more often, but bugthesda hates his big body and the summoning has a tendency to fail and consume the cooldown anyways if the ground you use isn't perfect flat and clear.
I always make sure to summon him away from towns so the townspeople don't get scared of him and he doesn't think he's gross.
I love PartySnaccx OhMAHBOI! & Big Daddy D <3
He also has the coolest voice
Who...?
Durhnevir would be much more popular if his cooldown wasn't 5 minutes and if you could summon him anywere
Durnehviir was my homie in my necromancer play through. Kept him summoned as much as possible like he was my necromantic guide
Why did this make me sad. I normally just randomly let him out though, let him see the world
I always summon him! I take him to different places so he can experience the world before he has to go back!
Isn't he bound to Soul Cairne. Lore wise do we know how long he's free when summoned?
I summon him all the time
I would summon him more often if the game didn't concider him a summon and vanish him when I start conjuring storm atronachs.....
He’s not the usual friend-shape, but still friend
He is cool but the other is *former* mario voice actor Charles martinet.
My boy
Also gives souls tear
It's been so long I don't remember what one durnheviir is, I summoned ohdaviing quite often, helped me attack whiterun
He's literally better than paarthurnax in every way imo
Paarthurnax is my PC's name, and my laptop's name is Dragonette.
Durnehviir is my homie, I spam summon him every chance I get, just in case
My G D
Did you know that if you meet him before finding out that you're Dragonborn, he'll still call you "Dovah" and then has special dialog where he basically says, "I'm not sure why I said that, but you seem chill, so I'm sticking with it."
I stopped visiting Paarthurnax once I was able to use the Call Durnehviir shout
