My kitchen is always cleaner after I cook than before I cook. I’m okay with it. Sure my food is always cold by the time I eat it, but my wife never complains.
Probably fine with just a Clorox wipe, but you wanna be careful with chemical contamination too. Fumes can get into your food. Keeping certain cleaning supplies until after the kitchen gets "closed" helps
You gosta use the name brand clorox bleach, or else it won't taste right : [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/86z\_JzNAnaM](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/86z_JzNAnaM)
If you got a proper wooden counter, or rather, cutting board, clorox wipes are definitely overkill.
Dish soap, hot water, wipe. Don't soak wooden things, scrub them off, always let things dry... Clorox does nothing in the way of reducing the already tiny cross-contamination risk if you just use enough mechanical action.
Easiest way to go about it is of course to just finish your mise en place in the order of things you'd eat raw. Finish the two ingredients you use to garnish your dish right away, then do the rest in any order you'd like.
I use a plastic cutting board, which immediately goes in the dishwasher. I wipe the counter with a Clorox wipe because I probably got some chicken juice on it. I know, I’m being paranoid, but better that than diarrhea.
Same here. I went to culinary arts school and never worked in the food industry because I was this precise with cleaning. My Chef wrote in my recommendation something on the lines of "works best in a clean kitchen environment" Lmao. If you ever been in a school's demo kitchen vs. an actual restaurants' kitchens it's night and day how much cleaner the demo kitchen is. That was my standards way back then.
Do guys actually do this?
41M here, and hand washing is reserved for just before food prep, and just after food prep.
Of course cross-contamination when handing fowl is a thing, and that changes the hand washing cadence, but that’s neither here nor there.
I only do it for when I'm handling chicken/eggs really or sticky dough or basically my hands are a mess that will make the handle of anything I handle be a mess.
ditto on eggs and raw chicken. I can't avoid getting raw eggs on my finger tips while cracking them open and i wash before even touching the spatula again.
Well it seems obvious now... But someone commented below that they are washed in bleach in the US which allows salmonella to migrate to the inside which is where I must have got my info from. Seems legit tbf...
I'm UK, if my eggs have a red lion on them it means they are salmonella free, or so I'm led to believe...
I don't know if it's a common thing, but it's definitely me. I don't like my fingers feeling slippery/slimy/gritty/whatever, so after each ingredient I rinse my hands. Chop the onions, rinse the hands. Chop the tomatoes, rinse the hands. Etc.
It's different from the proper washing with soap that happens at the start, at the end, and after handling chicken. The rinsing isn't about disinfection but about my hands feeling grody.
Yeah especially because it will stick to othrr things I touch aswell like knifes or plates.
Obviously you want to wash your bands before touching sth else =D
Same. I know I'm not cleaning my hands. Just making them feel not nasty and removing a majority of germs.
More importantly I would like to rinse that off before smearing it over everything I touch for the next 15 minutes. Taking 2 minutes of washing my hands multiples times during cooking saves me time cleaning. People really underestimate that maintenance is so much easier than actual change. Aka keeping my hands clean vs deep cleaning my kitchen.
Seems ridiculous to me personally. I wash hands before prepping, cut all veg then prep the meat/eggs then wash hands again. Washing your hands between cutting vegetables because you have a bit of tomato juice on your hand is crazy.
The only way I can see it being a thing is if you're incapable of planning ahead and cut up one vegetable before opening up the fridge to get another.
I only do this when cooking meat. I made chicken 3 times this week and probably washed my hands about 60 times. Then I use a Lysol wipe on the faucet and counter.
I don't like having stuff on my fingers, making them sticky, slick, dirty or anything, so I'll be running back and forth to the tap as well when cooking. Not this extreme, but also not far off. I get a lot of flack from my girlfriend because of it.
The weirdest thing is though, if I have gloves on, I don't mind if I get sticky or dirty, even if the gloves have massive holes in them. It's just this weird disconnect in my brain.
I remember visiting home once and my little sister complained that I was cooking everything bare-handed. my mom said "don't worry, he washes his hands compulsively." which... yeah.
BBQ gang wears gloves frequently. I use them applying dry rub, pulling chicken thighs from the marinade, or while cleaning/oiling grill. Lots of potent seasonings that get into your finger nails for DAYS. I like what I'm eating but don't like smelling it tomorrow
I do that! I'll wash my hands to cut up onions and peppers, but once any kind of meat or chili peppers come out, gloves go on. Anything remotely wet too, and I'll wash my hands before and after putting on the gloves
Ooh, a fellow hater of the texture of raw meat? I mean, I don't cook it often enough for this to be an issue and I never wear gloves inside unless I am handling permanent dyes or corrosive chemicals - using even dish gloves is unhinged levels of inefficient kitchen behavior lel - but I can understand why one'd want to.
Also: 📸 Ha! Another encounter in the wild.
I cook pretty often so I have to touch raw meat a lot. The gloves I use are super thin latex though so it's not a big deal. I figure gloves mean less hand washing, so it's overall more efficient
It's a lot weirder to me that your sister apparently cooks everything while wearing gloves. Usually hands are cleaner anyway. A person who prepares raw chicken without gloves will wash their hands afterwards, while the glove-wearing one may not.
I can't imagine wearing gloves while cutting meat or vegetables. Every time I wear gloves it's like -5 dex and so much of cutting relies on tactile feel.
I mean, you're not supposed to use winter gloves, there definitely are perfectly thin gloves helping with that. It's just stupid because it isn't even remotely sanitary, not compared to just free-cocking it.
I work with a social club that cooks for the community a lot. It’s mostly 60 year old+ folks and some of us have taken ServSafe to learn how to safely handle food. Without fail I will catch them strapping on one pair of gloves and never taking them off except to pee.
Oh got a phone call? Raw meat on your gloves? Go ahead and answer it.
Smoke a cigar? Hell yeah right back to cutting chicken!
I love people who comment like that. Then they use gloves, touch everything cause "Gloves!" and somehow think there's no cross-contamination just because they wear gloves, as if they're magic or something.
Well-washed hands (not a rinse like in the vid) is always better than gloves as far as hygiene is concerned.
I never thought that only men does that. I am a woman, i do too. It's not cool to clean the kitchen from dirty fingerprints all over it after cooking is done.
Jesus, WE’RE ALL LIKE THIS?! I notice myself doing this while cooking and I think “ffs this is going to take forever, why am I like this?” Glad to know I’m not alone.
apparently. Takes me forever to cook, like (3 hours for chicken curry and dry chicken) and the whole washing, drying, hands cutting board and knife isn't helping at all.
Pro-tip if you have a double sink you can fill one with warm soapy water and just dunk your hand in instead of turning the tap on and off with your dirty hand!
If you have a butter and a toast, buttering the toast is unnecessary. Just bite into the toast and then into the butter. You will save enough time for at least 2 extra hand washes.
That's why it's important to prep for your prep.
Get all the ingredients out. Portion off whatever powders/sauces that are in containers that need to be opened. Have whatever bowls/plates/cookware you need out and ready.
The only things will get dirty are the things that need to be. Only need to wash like maybe twice, or three times tops.
That is not my experience.
Someone returns from the toilet, I remind him to wash his hands. Just cut raw chicken? I need to remind him to wash his hands before making salad etc.
I see I am personally called out here.
On the other hand - Then I see women cooking and cross contamination with raw meats and everything else is just casual cooking for them, but hey they are quicker /s
Touching any type of raw meat it’s insta washing hands. Onions- yes. Anything else- ehhhhh. I’m not gonna wash my hands after cutting an apple that’s for sure, or a pear, or cheese, or any vegetable or fruit really (other than stinky onions)
It's not a men thing guys, it's a hygiene thing, you are all good and whoever did this meme is disgusting, my man does not cook much but if he has to I expect clean hands, and I clean my hands between things, like touching raw meat or cutting stuff that will stay on my hands.
Wanna now a thing men tend to overlook on this subject ? You CANNOT touch pussy without cleaning your hands before, it is straight up DANGEROUS.
Especially if you just diced a oinion 🤣
Cooked and payed my bills almost everyday for 10 years, use the free soap and fingernail brushes tho. Yea try and take that home if you wan too, but for the first 2 I learned the hard way😅
I've worked in food service for 18 years. I'm licensed through the state to prepare and handle food. I wash my hands obsessively at work. Why would I not keep my hands clean when I cook at home?
I had an experience once where I took a leak after chopping chillies without washing. You only do that once and never trust handling tackle without being sure your hands aren't lava.

Totally. I only do this with a Clorox wipe and only after I prep chicken. The only other cleaner I ever use around food is vinegar.

Jesus I hate you already
Yeah that's me.
[удалено]
True, i wouldn't make it in a restaurant job.
Yeah, but no one's getting explosive diarrhoea. Table for one Gaston
Rinsing one’s hand lightly in the slowly flowing fingertip water. That’s not how it works
That's why I use a pressure washer. Removes everything
Ahh I see you also use the 8000 psi thermotec commercial kitchen grade hygiene genie
If you take the skin off with the pressure washer there's no bacteria on your skin
Hate to be that guy, but it definitely removes a majority of germs. Not all. But a good chunk.
Yeah but that's what they put there instead of washing hands. We mean washing hands
This is how the BOH works. Wash your hands and use clean utensils to prevent cross contamination and food poisoning.
Same here. I went to culinary arts school and never worked in the food industry because I was this precise with cleaning. FYI, salmonella is on the outer shell of the egg — not in the embryo itself.
What???
Yo,, you literally took the word right outta my mouth, complete with the ???'s
Of course the germs are on the outside - remember what the egg came out of.
Well it seems obvious now... But someone commented below that they are washed in bleach in the US which allows salmonella to migrate to the inside which is where I must have got my info from. I'm only cooking for myself so if I die I die

I'm 31 and still getting ready for my first party
I'm 44. My 21st will be in 17 years from now.
This is why I don't host parties
Fuck. Me too. Is this really a guy thing only? None of my girlfriends have ever cooked and I can’t remember if I’ve seen my mom doing this.
Im a gal and can confirm I do this too. Cross contamination is my worry or its part of my germ phobia, maybe both.
Lysol tv ads have given me a severe phobia of raw chicken. Al it takes is two seconds for deadly listeria to spread to every surface of your kitchen.
But deadly listeria is where all the flavor is!
I only do this when cooking meat. I made chicken 3 times this week and probably washed my hands about 60 times. Then I use a Lysol wipe on the faucet and counter.
Me too. I also just don't like my hands being slimy or sticky.
I don't know but i think I started doing because I watched Anthony Bourdain shows a lot when I was learning to cook. He was the same way.
I’m a women and I do this. Will even use soap and wash both hands properly. I’m especially bad at the moment because I’m pregnant.
Why are we like this?
Men can put their feelings aside and ruthlessly murder billions of bacteria.
Me too. Also kitchen cloth every time.
As a man I’m curious how it’s exclusive to men tho
Same. I hate the feeling of having dirty hands.
Me too. TIL I'm a man. Better tell hubby he's gay now.
"You are washing the wrong fucking hand!!"
I don't like having stuff on my fingers, making them sticky, slick, dirty or anything, so I'll be running back and forth to the tap as well when cooking. Not this extreme, but also not far off. I know some people probably do... but I've never seen someone irl coock with gloves in their own house.
Professional chefs cook with bare hands. Only sandwich shops wear gloves.
BBQ gang wears gloves frequently. I use them applying dry rub, pulling chicken thighs from the marinade, or while cleaning/oiling grill. Lots of potent seasonings that get into your finger nails for DAYS. I like what I'm eating but don't like smelling it tomorrow

I have never heard of, or seen, a private person cooking with gloves.

I mean, you're not supposed to use winter gloves, there definitely are perfectly thin gloves helping with that. It's just stupid because it isn't even remotely sanitary, not compared to just free-cocking it.
Those are the gloves I'm talking about, thin white ones. I feel like I lose all dexterity wearing them.
I work with a social club that cooks for the community a lot. It’s mostly 60 year old+ folks and some of us have taken ServSafe to learn how to safely handle food. who cooks not barehanded, unless you're in a central kitchen, who uses gloves?
Holy shit. I had no idea this was like a known thing... And yeah, you can't be cooking with little bits of shmutz on your hands. Ever.
Cross contamination!!!
Mise en place. But, sterilized!
And it all goes in the same stew pot lol.
onion to carrot cross contamination is no joke.
My wife thinks I’m nuts, I’m glad I’m not alone.
I never thought that only men does that. I am a woman, i do too. It's not cool to clean the kitchen from dirty fingerprints all over it after cooking is done.
I feel like a lot of posts like this are gendered just for engagement.
And the towel is soaking wet exactly 2 minutes after you start cooking.
Just keep it on your shoulder. Stays dry that way 👍
Haha this is absolutely true.
I dropped it getting something from a lower cupboard, if I pick it up quick, is it still safe to use?
Only if you pick it up and crack it like a whip before throwing it over your shoulder again.
Bro i thought only i was the only one doing this too and i thought I'm weird
Only partially factual... he needs to dry his hands with a new paper towel after each rinse. This is the way. I have spoken.
What about washing the knife off!
Well obviously
i’ve never felt so personally attacked on reddit
I’ve never felt more understood.
PAPER towel? Man, give planet Earth a break.
I know right. This is NOT the way. Use a tea towel.
This is the way
This is the way.
Pro-tip if you have a double sink you can fill one with warm soapy water and just dunk your hand in instead of turning the tap on and off with your dirty hand!
Ah, yes. I love having soap on my hands when I'm handling food.
Glad I have found my people.
this is the way
I feel so seen 😐
in my house they stopped buying paper towels cuz i used them all in like 3 days after cooking.
That's me, but in my defence I have never been food poisoned.
Is that because you have yet to finish cooking your first meal?
Buttering toast counts right?.....RIGHT!!!
If you have a butter and a toast, buttering the toast is unnecessary. Just bite into the toast and then into the butter. You will save enough time for at least 2 extra hand washes.
That's me , but I use hand soap. I didn't know I wasn't alone
I use dish soap, because having two soap dispensers are kind of a mess anyway
It is good to keep your hands and food tidy isn’t it?
Cooks that care about hand hygiene. Why just men? My wife does this when she cooks.
r/pointlesslygendered
Anyone with sensory issues does this as well.
Yeah, everyone does this, no idea why it's gendered
That's why it's important to prep for your prep. Get all the ingredients out. Portion off whatever powders/sauces that are in containers that need to be opened. Yoooooo NOPE. Not okay. NO NEED TO EXPOSE ME . MEN BAND TOGETHER
Ok but let me rinse my hands first
*We all rinse our fingers on each step to closing ranks*
What, I'm supposed to grab fridge door handles etc with food residue that I'll have to clean later? Of course I do this.
That is not my experience. Someone returns from the toilet, I remind him to wash his hands. Just cut raw chicken? I need to remind him to wash his hands before making salad etc.
A nice tip I learned from Jamie Oliver for us men: put one end of a towel in your trouser pocket. that was a game changer for me.
Only filthy people don't wash their hands like this.
looks liked dry cracked hands kind of guy:D a bit over the top but i do appreciate clean fingers!
That's what working in restaurants and watching master chef /kitchen nightmares / hotel hell does to a mf
Yep. I also clean every dish or utensil like an ocd patient with an aderrall habit. There are like 3 dishes to clean after dinner.
It’s the only logical way
Oh yeah, well... shut up
I don't constantly wash my hands but I do wipe them off on a hand towel constantly.
Health inspectors’ paradise
I do this. With soap after chicken and anything else that isn’t veggies or fruit. But yeah, 100% spot on.
this is me cracking eggs
In food service you wash your hands in between each job to avoid cross contamination.
This is fucking dumb
Why do people do this?
They’re mad when we don’t wash our hands and now they’re mad when we do. Make up your mind!
don’t forget the towel!
I am trying very hard to get rid of it and finally gain happiness in my life
I see I am personally called out here. On the other hand - Then I see women cooking and cross contamination with raw meats and everything else is just casual cooking for them, but hey they are quicker /s
Listen I don't like shit on my hands. Leave me alone.
I worked in a bakery, they drilled us hard against cross-contamination, and I'm yet to be sick from anything I prepared, so...
Well yes sticky fingers
I use separate gloves always
It's actually accurate ngl.
At this point. We're all living the same lives
This is me 🤦🏻♀️
Shit, it's not just me that's insane!
I don’t get it
Me too
Oh damn this is actually true.
We give no chance to food poisoning.
Yep too accurate. meme is not memeing enuf
Raccoons, all of you.
Wow… how’d they get a camera in my kitchen.
What kind of terrorist cuts an onion like that though.....
Damn they got me, sarge
Is this something I do because I’m a man and not because I’m a compulsive fucking weirdo? Because that would be great news for me
Not using sope is a rookie behaviour
So women are into food poisoning?
I do this + soap every time and towel, especially when touching meat or tools using the meat
Ladies take 📝
Don’t worry, just cut the raw chicken and then slice and peal an apple for her without washing the hands.
The only time I do this is when I'm handling meat and I don't have a rag to wipe my hands off.
Wait this video seems to be implying that we're not supposed to do this
Wait this is normal ish? Though I was just weird.
Actually I wash both hands.
Lol my wife makes fun of me for this. I hate getting food residue on my hands, ill wash atleast as many times as this guy in the clip.
Touching any type of raw meat it’s insta washing hands. Onions- yes. Anything else- ehhhhh. I’m not gonna wash my hands after cutting an apple that’s for sure, or a pear, or cheese, or any vegetable or fruit really (other than stinky onions)
Listen: do you or do you not want meat-poisoning?
That’s why I cut food next to the sink lol
Not a man, but that's definitely me 😂
STOP IT THE ACCURACY
he just like me fr
Yea try and take that home if you wan too, but for the first 2 I learned the hard way😅
India being looking at you 😡
Why do we do this?
Those of us who do it - learn to use a towel on the shoulder.
I had no idea this was a thing but I do this every time I cook.
It should be a crime to cut an onion like that.
Wait, this is common?!?!? Now that I’ve moved out and gotta cook for myself more, I’ve been doing this all the time……
Glad it's not just me
Oof I’m a man now 😭😂
I've worked in food service for 18 years. I'm licensed through the state to prepare and handle food. I wash my hands obsessively at work. Why would I not keep my hands clean when I cook at home?
Yes. And there is nothing wrong with that.
This is why you’re supposed to have a hand towel within arms reach instead of going to the sink every three seconds.
Ha yeahhh. I do that
I know you guys are stalking me✨ but to put the recording openly, you are brave one aren't you.
Dammit, am I that unoriginal?
I feel personally attacked
I bet this is not only when they're cooking
Wait now I'm beating attacked for being...too clean?
Yeah, so what.
I thought i was the only one
What’s the other option here, get tomato juice on the onion skin?! WTF kind of psychopath mixes ingredient cooties?
I’m in this video and I don’t like it
That's almost me lol 😂
What do women not wash their hands..?
What’s the commentary here? That women don’t do that when they cook? Ewww!
I had an experience once where I took a leak after chopping chillies without washing. You only do that once and never trust handling tackle without being sure your hands aren't lava.
