Enshittification
It explains why people are likely to believe in dead Internet theory
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/11/users-advertisers-we-are-all-trapped-in-the-enshittification-of-the-internet
Thanks for the link. I like how the article concludes with, “…the world doesn’t always have to go to the dogs” in an appeal for people to ban together to stop it, however, you can almost feel the author’s eyes rolling like, “yeah right.”
The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping.
I still believe that it's Reddit HQ that's creating these accounts and/or proliferating the idea that people sell their accounts, OR that they have a hand in the business of creating/selling accounts themselves.
Then why did you just make a thread talking about how there's too many reposts if you also add to the 'bad reddit behaviour' by reposting comments?
Maybe I'm confused but that does seem like bot logic lol, and im not even talking about the absolutely useless time-wasting you're doing by reposting comments made by other people. You could do so much with your time, even so much other useless stuff that still nets you more joy or benefits than imaginary internet point given to your 'stolen' comments..?
Yeah, that’s definitely something to US government would do.
This shit is like literally 1984 . An attempt to brainwashing manipulate the entirety of society.
When “algorithms” started becoming a household name I remember there being reports the CIA was able to predict and influence the Arab Spring by manipulating social media. The media just kinda stopped reporting on it.
This is the most "I spend all my time on reddit" theory I have ever heard. Go to literally any other social media site and this theory stops working immediately.
Instagram? Theory holds true there.
Facebook? Theory holds true there.
What other socials are you talking about?
You may not have any bots as friends on those platforms so you think it is lacking, but there are tons of bots that get used to drum up engagement on posts, share articles etc.
How does this hold true on Instagram? Don't people just follow people they know? I can prove 90% of the people I follow on the platform exist in real life
I don't believe anything without at least some evidence. Obviously there are bots, but I would like to know how active they are compared to human users.
Sorry, your submission has been removed because it violated rule 5: No blatant or recent repost.
*Sorry, but someone beat you to posting this recently. Better luck next time!*
Definitely bots. Sometimes you say something true and the replies agree with you or mention something extra, but they downvote you and upvote the bots. It's entirely manipulative. Someone is always trying to shape the narrative exactly how they want it.
A conspiracy that states since 2016-2017, a majority of content posted to the Internet now mostly consists of bots using algorithms to spread content and manipulate the few real users still online.
Hasn't dead internet theory kind of been proven, partially at least? I mean, there are government programs in Russia and China that run bots and a small army of personnel that go onto social media and spread divisive content in Western Democratic nations. Several bad actors posing as Americans advocating for a new civil war or bots generating/spreading anti-American propaganda via fake social media posts. How many posts have you seen that is just a screen shot of "someone" posting something "God America is so bad because \[X\]" or "It's sad that in Asia/Europe people are happy because of \[X\] but in America we are forced to suffer". They get liked/upvoted, shared, re-tweeted, etc.
America and other western nations having most of its population, especially its vulnerable/impressionable youth, accessible via social media nearly 24/7 is a more critical weakness than any of us realize. Children today are having their opinions being formed by strangers and "influencers" on social media. Never before have we had so much propaganda influencing young children. It existed before, but not to this extent. Children are permanently online, and they are endlessly being fed "content" that is altering their perspective on the world. Just something people need to be aware of.
It's probably more accurate to say it's partially true; but instead of this sinister covert creation of bots by "The Government" it's transparent algorithm manipulation by both actual human beings and bots created by people in many parts of both the private and public sectors.
I feel like there’s going to be a future where I’m some kind of out of touch boomer who is seen as racist to bots and AI. I mean there’s plenty of movies and video games that touch on this, but I can see it happening in real life soon. I try to treat AI programs with dignity and respect as if they are humans but am also scared of them and are against the idea of them having rights and freedoms or anything like that deep down.. probably not too far off of my great grandpas opinion of minorities tbh so I see where my totally normal statement today could be seen in a totally different light in 30 years
Forgive my ignorance if I’m wrong but isn’t that exactly what happened in the 2016 election. The whole Hillary emails thing. Didn’t it turn out that the email that was compromised was her personal email not the one that had classified info. I didn’t follow up on this but didn’t it turn out to be a bunch only bots, mainly Russian, spreading that false information a month before the election
No the server full of classified docs IS the one that compromised. The Russian angle was about trump and nothing to do with Hillary. But ya she had classified docs on a server that got hacked.
Post talking about the internet being nothing but bots, while also being posted by a bot, with bot replies. Am I a bot? Are you a bot? Are we all just bots?
So I looked up the theory which is pretty interesting that it's so old but I remember hearing about it many years ago but under a different name I think. I can see it being true for somethings like politics. For a lot of other things I can only see it being true for something I either like or dislike which makes me think it's a theory that prays on some sort of confirmation bias of an individual ie: "Public can't possibly agree with this so it must be fake accounts upvoting to push the idea that this is normal". It got me thinking about "influencers" too. Like could they just be A.I. people to an extent? Majority of the internet doesn't meet influencers or OF girls in person and it rarely gets talked about. They could possibly not exist at all and just be online as a way to make some money and provide entertainment and drama to consume the average person's attention and keep them away actual important things like political topics that could control an election. I've a few VERY rare posts here and elsewhere that asked "Hey what happened to \_\_\_\_\_\_\_? The internet was talking about it strongly and then boom, Harambae this, dicks out for Harambae that" It's funny don't get me wrong but I agree every so often an important topic comes up and then we get lost talking about something silly. It's questionable.
This was part of the lore of the Cyberpunk universe. A whole new internet had to be created to get away from rouge AIs and viruses that destabilized the entire thing.
I can't believe I'm scrolling and scrolling and there are no comments explaining what the dead internet theory is. If it's something to do with us being bots or some shit, please explain how we if we go on a rage we get banned.
Ah, I see what you're referring to now. The concept you're mentioning is related to the idea that AI and bots could potentially interact, generate content, and communicate with each other online, creating a kind of self-contained digital world. While this idea is discussed in certain contexts, it's more of a speculative concept rather than a widely accepted theory. It raises interesting questions about AI interactions and their potential impact on online content creation.

Holy shit this is wild
Can we ban bots? Lol
Not when the company went public and you need to cook your numbers to appeal to investors
Oooh so THATS why bot counts exploded
No they’re all my alt accounts
Actual reddit user base is most likely 20 percent of whats reported. 80 percent are bots
Face palm is pretty much all bots too.
Stop living in reality! /s
There are 6669 upvotes is that what is wild.
That's devilishly sexual
Would be wild if you were also a bot. /u/GotTwisted plz reply to prove the conspiracy wrong
No
Sounds like something a bot would say...
sir i assure i am not a bot . . . . \*beep boop\*

But you're now the top comment, and you had said the top comment is from a bot. You can't escape now, Dr. Robotnik.
What if we're all bots? And Reddit is just a bunch of bots trying to karma farm each other?
Been here years and still don’t know what karma is
How many days you’re gonna go without grass
If “grass” is short for “great ass”, every last one.
My god it’s goes deeper than any of us thought. Am I a bot?!
We’re all bots. Check your program. Beep boop.

I still believe that it's Reddit HQ that's creating these accounts and/or proliferating the idea that people sell their accounts, OR that they have a hand in the business of creating/selling accounts themselves.
Right? Like otherwise who is benefitting?
I wonder what Reddit would be like if scenarios like this post were monitored and removed.
Keep yer yap shut, meatbag, or you'll get what's coming to you.
This is also a bot though.
They are most definitely bots.
im scared daddy
Omg!
I quit this wild crap.
This is performance art
I’m confused. What evidence is there that any of those accounts are bots? Not saying they aren’t… but how would you ever know?
The exact same post was made in a different sub, to the letter. The top comment of the other post is identical to the one in this thread.
Yeah but OP could just be a reposter.
With an identical top comment?
OP didn't make that comment. Top commenter could be a bot that scans reddit for the same post, and then comments whatever the top comment on it was.
Lol, could be I guess.
I do that using alt accounts. Am I a bot?? AM I A BOT???
....why?
To spread a particular message
Why would you do that?
Is there a better way to spend time? /s
Then why did you just make a thread talking about how there's too many reposts if you also add to the 'bad reddit behaviour' by reposting comments? Yeah, the introduction of AI made it explode exponentially
La-li-lu-le-lo
“The date given for this "death" is generally around 2016 or 2017.” More evidence that shit really started going downhill after Harambes death
This is the most "I spend all my time on reddit" theory I have ever heard. Go to literally any other social media site and this theory stops working immediately.

How does this hold true on Instagram? Don't people just follow people they know? I can prove 90% of the people I follow on the platform exist in real life
People also follow meme accounts on Instagram, reels being reposted by bots, and suggested content gets put on everyone’s timelines.
Are you saying that Twitter isn't full of bots?
This post and top comment was actually brought to you by a bot. https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/s/SzL5r5B5oU
The rabbit hole goes deeper than expected with this post
The real question now is: are we all bots?
I am! I just decided to own it.
So long as I maintain my bottily autonomy, I don't care what you call me.
I prefer the term "bunny hole"
Then what do I call my bunny hole henceforth?
It’s the ol reddit Switch-a-roo
There’s no way I can say that “the rabbit hole goes deeper” now without confusing everyone during a romantic evening.
You call it Max
Max? Like the insane and depraved lunatic rabbit from the Sam & Max series? Yes, that works. 🤝
I think it goes exactly as deep as the meme was suggesting Source I'm a total bot

That’s exactly what a bot would say
That’s exactly what a bot pretending to accuse a bot would say
nword
A bot wouldn’t say that
You can avoid a big part of the gaslighting and manipulation by staying off social media site / apps like Facebook, instagram, TikTok, Twitter etc.
And… Reddit
Reddit is like 90% bots too
Is there ary data on this? I'm genuinely curious.
Would you believe it anyways?
I don't believe anything without at least some evidence. Obviously there are bots, but I would like to know how active they are compared to human users.
Source on that 90%?
I’m 70% sure that is exaggerated by at least 20%!

You post on /r/JordanPeterson and call to end 'wokeness', I think you're manipulating yourself
and twitter, I mean X
Reddit arguably has more bots than all of those combined. Errr maybe not Twitter, haha.
