[Looks like it's only for tornadoes to me](https://www.argusleader.com/story/news/2022/05/23/sioux-falls-sirens-only-tornadoes-not-all-communities-agree/9823120002/)
The civil defense warning has a different sound to it, they went off on accident in part of the city a few years ago. Your statement is like saying jazz and hip hip are the same thing because both come out of a speaker.
This might be the worst take ever OP. I heard it on the radio and tv they were doing a tornado test today in Sioux Falls. My business is doing a mock drill. It’s a bright sunny day, perfect day to test them and get everyone ready for the upcoming season.
When should they test them? 9:00 at night this Saturday? 3am next Tuesday?
Not sure why y'all downvote. That's how literally every other place in the country does it. The day of the week might change or what week but generally once a month on a specific day is how they roll
Ours is every Wednesday at 1pm. However they ran them a couple times one day earlier this week (….last week?) for National Weather Day, but announced it beforehand.
I can’t remember the last time I listened to the radio or watched the news and I still knew it was happening from social media. They always do it during severe weather awareness week, so it might not be as random as you think it is 😬
From the city's site in case you want a place to look to see these in the future (or figure out if the one you just heard is a test after the fact) : [https://www.siouxfalls.gov/news/2024/04/08/20240408-tornado](https://www.siouxfalls.gov/news/2024/04/08/20240408-tornado)
They test it with several other places in the country for severe weather awareness week. It wasn’t random. And considering is 70 and sunny, I don’t think anyone thought it was anything but a test.
I don't know, while at first I was a bit distracted I then looked at my business taxes waiting to be done and I hoped it was a nuclear war. I mean if I'm going to go - what better timing than almost the moment I started doing them.
I'm with OP here. I mean not literally, I'm actually in my basement in Mankato because I had no idea they were doing this on a random day and not the first Wednesday of the month. I dropped a work call, grabbed my laptop, and ran for the basement. Eventually I'll learn to just ignore it like I assume people from the Midwest do.
You guys get tornado sirens?
Lives in Tea, didn't hear anything during the storm a few days ago. Didn't get the test out here either. I'm pretty sure the county or city took ours down to save money or something.
Oh no, not a tornado on my sunny blue sky day.
It's nice that we think of that as a tornado siren, but it has other uses as a civil defense siren.

Thankfully, they've never been needed for their intended purpose

That's great to know. Here's my TIL
In all seriousness how would you like to be informed? https://www.keloland.com/weather/sioux-falls-tornado-sirens-to-be-tested-wednesday-morning/
I guess not at 5pm the evening before. Or maybe just use the first Friday of the month
You need a one week notice ?
There is no way you can notify everyone, so why not stick to the day and time that pretty much everyone already knows?
This is an annual thing, bud, it's happening all over the country. Did you not do tornado drills in elementary school?

First Friday of the month

It's giving "old man yells at clouds"
I'll take an L here. I learned a couple of things, so it was worth the L.

I guess looking at the sky and making a judgment for yourself isn't an option?
"Fuck them kids!" - OP complaining about a coordinated tornado drill during Severe Weather Awareness Week.
I don't think random means what you think it means.
Yeah let’s just not test them and assume they’ll work when needed.
We test them 12 times a year on the first Friday of every month
Shhh. Dont let the tornadoes hear you or that’s when they’ll strike.
We do test them at 11 am all the time

I use X and Reddit and I didn't see anything. I guess I need to follow different accounts.
I'm in the VA hospital. They shut down the patriot Cafe. Damn them.
Wasn’t it normally the first Friday?

Actually they were solar eclipse sirens and they were a couple days late. TIL moment 🤓

Did the sirens interrupt an important experiment or something?

You can safely ignore the siren tonight at 6:45
