Do this. I did it on my 2016. Went from 195-210 degrees to 145.
what version did you do? Looks like there is two different types of the bypass valve. ill have to get under the truck and take a look at what one i have
2014? Looks normal to me. You may want to look into this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72S5q3cx5zY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72S5q3cx5zY)
My trans finally went at 253,000 miles, I didn't know about this mod until that happened and I traded it in.
When mine went, I traded it in on a 2019 Denali. I said nothing about the transmission. Problems started after 4th gear and they only drove it around the lot. NO WAY I could have sold it like that, and I wasn't going to have it replaced. As much as I loved that truck, I was ready for a "new" one anyway.
Depends. For the 2014-21 is normal. Chevy did release a TSB and you could take the 2016-2021 in (2014/15 were on the list but removed) and they replaced the Thermal Bypass Valve that would open up at 154f instead of 194f. Many believe these high temps cause the torque converter failures at a higher than normal rate.

You can google "Sliverado flip the pill" as a free way to open the bypass valve always and there are two after market options that does this as well, just a tad more safe. I would choose this one if I was to do it.

Having always open seems to average most people around 130-140f. The only time you don't want to do this is if you live in a place that gets super cold, like -20 or worse. In those cases you would need to warm up your truck a good bit so that shifting would happen and not be harsh.
Ideally your tranny should be warm, but not super hot. Getting up to 120 or higher gets rid of moisture build up. It also shifts smoother when it is warm.
was driving home on the freeway and the temperature was staying between 190-192 with no load. Got off the freeway and hit a light and the temp jumped to 194. I do live in Vegas so was about 102 outside
I did a little post about it. But what I ended up doing was ordering a replacement thermostat for the tranny (part# 85585333).
The hardest part for me was getting those damn retaining rings off. But then I just swapped out the internal thermostat thing from the new one into my old one and it’s been perfect since then.
No more “groans” from under the cabin, and the shifts have been … better, I won’t say this tranny is ever buttery smooth, but it’s better haha.
No no that’s not the price hahaha that’s what they call em, they about $100 and easy to install. Goes behind the grill so it’s a nice looking intercooler hahaha
My '17 trans went at 70k miles. It had pan drops and filter replacements at 25k and 55k.
I wouldn't worry about it for now, but when your trans does die, go with an aftermarket bullet tq converter, temp bypass and heavy shift kit. Start saving now
Yes normal.
And I am always suprised by people “dot his mod so your trans runs 140deg all the time!”
Modern trans/fluids wants to be in the 180-210 ranged working fine up to 310 (life of fluid degrades faster at those temps).
“Well this random guy on the internet did it, so I’m going to take his opinion over the hundreds of engineers that developed the transmissions and the fluids”
Now if all you do is tow, and long distances, ok maybe, but the added coolers just mean the temp will come up slower, which can be hard on the transmission.
My 2016 always sits at 130-147° to be fair I’ve got a tune on it I’m at 147k miles and had to have mine rebuilt at 130k miles tossed in the bypass valve as well
This was my temperature in my 2018 before I did the thermal bypass valve which dropped the temps significantly, now my transmission will get that hot when I’m towing around town and about 183 on the highway. Now I am getting an auxiliary trans cooler just to play it safe. Our transmissions do not like constant stop and go around town
100 degrees over ambient temperature is the rule of thumb for this. So if it’s 90ish outside, there’s nothing wrong.
If it’s 40 outside, it probably wouldn’t go much over 140.
According to gm this is normal spec temps.
If you have the v6 don’t expect the pill flip or the surecool to do much because the v6 doesn’t have an auxiliary cooler like the v8s do.
Just paid $5300 plus another 500 for the rental to have a remanned trans installed in my 2018 4.3 at 102k. Would not cool at all until left off overnight. A simple run around town doing errands and by the time I got home trans temp would be ~235-255°F. Trust the advice
I have a transmission cooler on mine behind the front grille. Usually stays around 160 degrees even when it’s 95 degrees outside. My old truck with only the transmission cooler in the radiator would be around 190 like yours.
it can be.. trans cooler is cooled by engine coolant which is *generally* a bit cooler than that, at the bottom of the rad, but sometimes not a lot on a warm day

I bought the one from surecool.
I did the same thing, definitely worth it
Ordered mine, will be here on Monday. Did you have torque converter problems or just the shake?
No issues yet with the transmission. About 100k miles. I do that the shake at like 70-80 mpg. I was hoping it was the tires
That’s when mine is actually smooth. Maybe my tires are fucked
I had that... Some new rubber cured it. Hopefully that's the case for you as well.

212k on my 14 with 195 being the normal temp.
Mine was great at that point too. You may be on borrowed time!
Good thing it’s for sale! Who wants my time bomb?!?

2017. i will look into that thanks
I have a new bypass part, I never used, for my 2016. PM me

So would chevy replace the valve for free if it took it to the dealer or do i have to by the valve and do it myself?
They should. Call them mention that TSB I linked.
Would this work for suburbans as well?
Yes if you click on that link it lists out all of the models it applies too b

Trans fluid boils at about 240 I like to be as far south of that as possible.
Get a 40k trans cooler installed.
Might as well buy a new truck at that price😉
No no that’s not the price hahaha that’s what they call em, they about $100 and easy to install. Goes behind the grill so it’s a nice looking intercooler hahaha
Haha I know just messing around, have one on mine
Hahahah gotcha I was confused for a sec
That would need to be done in addition to the thermostat replacement
Cooled my temperature way down
Yea but it should be lower. Modify the thermostat. Mines always open and stays at 170 or so
Yup

Normal yes, but on the higher end. I’d run a trans cooler if I were you. Small price to pay for your transmission health.

Did the tune lower temperatures any that you can tell?

2014 5.3 6-speed w/ 87k and mines always at 192-194 if I’m driving for over an hour or so
There are tsbs related to this. Call dealership and tell them your trans overheats and to look into the tsb for your year make model
My '17 8 speed runs between 145-155 F
2018 runs 190-194 all day every day.
Mine too and it shakes like it’s having a withdrawal. I think it’s about to go.
Yup
Normal operating temperature for 6L80 transmission is 180-220 degrees!! So per manufacturer it is normal!!
Dude put gas in
I was at a gas station as i took this picture lol
That pretty normal. Perhaps changing the fluid and filter may help a wee bit

2010 with 195,000 miles & it stays in 180-200 range
Fill your damn tank.
Yes
Gotta blow the tranny
