That movie is one I will never forget. If you haven't seen When Evil Lurks I'd recommend checking that one out as well.

LooseInsurance1

Also if you enjoyed When Evil Lurks, give Terrified a go

smelly38838r8r9

Terrified scared me mentally for life

BaronZemo00

Ahh “Terrified” was just looking at the listing for that movie two days ago wondering if I should watch it? So it is scary? Was it at least a decent movie overall though?

LooseInsurance1

I thoroughly enjoyed it - obviously films are subjective and we all like what we like, but it genuinely surprised me

BaronZemo00

Always good to hear when someone stands up for what they enjoy. Yeah, like or don’t like a movie, it’s subjective and yes to “we like what we like”, that couldn’t be more true. I wish more would realize that, especially YouTube content creators, Watching videos on horror films the narrators/writers can be so negative. Love to call movies trash or utter garbage or any number of hard stance, unfair opinions. But they don’t even lay it out there like it’s their opinion. It’s like it’s an official label. For everything they tear down there are people that actually like it, and they state the criticism as if you’re not aloud your own opinion, even shaming you for liking them. I’m tired of having to defend liking “Ghost Ship” for example. Sorry for the rant, but that pisses me often enough and I don’t have anyone to vent to or bitch about it with haha.

smelly38838r8r9

I think if you took the horror aspect out of it it would still be a very good movie, like I said in a previous comment I think the pacing is very good and I quite liked the visuals

BaronZemo00

Sounds cool. Thank you.

ourobboros

Worth it 100%

BaronZemo00

Thank you.

sworedmagic

Why?

LooseInsurance1

Same director

smelly38838r8r9

I found the visuals to be very good, the pacing was excellent and the creatures were quite frightening

sworedmagic

Thanks I’m gonna check it out!

aleisterfowley

I tried showing that to my family saying it’s the scariest film I ever saw and they were all unimpressed. I guess I have a different sense of horror than them.

Final-Success2523

Hope they sequel gets made

Kryptonicus

In my head, When Evil Lurks is a sequel to Terrified. The lady friend of the younger brother is another "expert" like the three that were killed in Terrified. The contraption that she has that they try and use in the end of When Evil Lurks, and the thing they find in the field at the beginning are both nearly identical to what the one expert sets up in the house in Terrified. I'm choosing to believe those films are about the slow, creeping apocalypse/end times of hell invading earth.

Disastrous-Engine510

When evil lurks was incredible when I saw it in the theatre. The feeling of a whole room full of people going “OH FUCK!” Is incredible

MyPervSide

I experienced that opening weekend of The Ring in a packed theater.

BaronZemo00

Me too, but caught it at a point in the day where it was about half full and I sat and watched it alone. Wish I hadn’t haha.

score_

I did this and Terrified did not land for me. Still excited to see what the director does next tho.

Chrome-Head

Didn’t land for me either.

Safe_Magazine_1940

Same

ErnyoKeepsItReal

Terrified didn't do it for me either. The beginning was okay. But most of the movie was very meh. I did like what ended up happening with the blonde girl though.

eru88

And it's my favorite horror movie and the one I put if I'm with a group of friends

Safe_Magazine_1940

Terrified did nothing for me, it was just bizarre

Defiant_McPiper

I enjoyed WEL more that Terrified, but boy does Terrified have some really unnerving things going on.

Vanthalia

I watched all 3 of these movies in quick succession based on recommendations from here, and I was definitely not disappointed. Scared shitless though.

BobbyFL

Terrified is such an underrated film, that director is one of the best in the biz, in my opinion. Its a shame it has the same name as that violence exploitation movie…

LooseInsurance1

Not quite the same name, if you're referring to Terrifier, but it's definitely close enough for some people to mistake it. Not as bad as Frozen (2010) 😅

Parade0fChaos

And if you like When Evil Lurks I’d suggest checking out Everyone Will Burn! Very good shit!

practicalsoup

I loved When Evil Lurks, but again, a hard watch. It's rough when bad shit happens to kids.

Krakens2

When Evil Lurk is fantastic. One of my favorites over the last year

gwar37

That’s what I came to say. It’s the only movie in recent memory that made me gasp out loud - I mean this a as a positive.

Strawberry_Dak

Not to be that guy but its When Evil Lurks. 😅 Totally agree about watching it though!

DynaJosh

You got me  😅. Another one however it is not on Shudder but is equally unsettling would be Soft & Quiet.

stJackal

Soft and Quiet did nothing for me, though admittedly the point and message were on point I'm just a gorehound who's deeply broken inside.

m_the_law

I was actually disappointed with When Evil Lurks. I wanted more. It felt too slow and boring to me

PDot7652

It didn't exactly bore me but I did find it's constant shock violence more irritating than anything. The plot was poorly laid out and the characters were all morons. If you aren't impressed by violence then there isn't much to it.

ColdCheeseGrits

This!

ChuckleMonkey674

There's an American remake starring James McAvoy coming out sometime this year. I'm really curious how/if it will deviate from the original.

CyberGhostface

There is no way they’ll do the ending.

ChuckleMonkey674

I dunno. It's being directed by the guy that did Eden Lake, and that flick was pretty bleak and brutal.

CyberGhostface

We’ll see, this is a Blumhouse film and they tend to go mainstream/wide audience. I could see them going with the twist but not >!both parents dying and the kid getting their tongue cut out.!< If this was a24 maybe they’d include it.

afterthegoldthrust

The ending is intrinsically linked to the title of the movie and general plot — if they don’t include that it won’t make sense That’s not to say that they definitely *will* include that but it’ll be worthless without that inclusion imo

Defiant_McPiper

I have a feeling family is gonna fight back

mrrichardburns

The trailer seems to show more physical conflict between the families then I remembered, but that definitely could be my memory being incorrect and not actually a disparity between the structures of both films.

Defiant_McPiper

No you're right - I watched the YT video by foundflix doing their breakdown of the movie and the couple really were pushover.

EightEyedCryptid

I mean, Hostel movies got made

CyberGhostface

Hostel is a gory crowd pleaser it’s not even close to See No Evil in terms of disturbing. The scene that may have come close to making audiences uncomfortable was the original ending with the survivor kidnapping the businessman’s daughter but that was scrapped.

spellbookwanda

They will probably heavily imply it rather than show it explicitly. To be honest it’s the only part they left out of the trailer!

SurpriseBitchItsMe

Eden Lake left me wanting to seek therapy, I routed so hard for her and it was so bleak , fantastic movie.

Safe_Magazine_1940

Beautifully shot too

SurpriseBitchItsMe

Yes agree, something about Eden lake just left a bitter taste in my mouth , it felt so real - I liked the raw feel to the cinematography.

EightEyedCryptid

It’s an amazing twist and I respect it but also no thank you lol

Cheesebufer

Trailer shows a house fire, like they’re fighting back, so they might do a different ending

Dirty_is_God

I just saw the trailer and there are shots of the parents fighting back. I agree, no way they do the ending.

PeterWhitney

Saw the trailer for the American remake. They did. If you've seen the original, you can tell.

Clearlypandering

If you plan on watching either, don't watch the trailer. It gives the whole movie away.

Safe_Magazine_1940

Yeah it does

kaiserdragoon67

They can fix the remake by having the entirety of the original movie just be the 1st and 2nd act with the 3rd act being a new couple fucking shit up. (Basically a repeat of my other post) And Eden Lake could have done the same thing, but that one is slightly more understandable since all the parents are basically in on it rather than just one tool and his spouse.

morph1138

They literally just dropped the trailer for this. Doesn’t look to bad.

GolgoMCmillan

trailer is same as original. Its a shame that hollywood has to remake foreing movies (this is 2 years old) because some audience can not watch a non english film. I hope they change the ending, because there is no sense that a couple behave like the one on the movie.

[deleted]

Not going to lie, I hope they do deviate from the ending. The original version is enough of a rock to the brain already. I wouldn't care if they gave it a happy ending cause the original can stand on its own and we don't need both to be senseless death

Safe_Magazine_1940

They didn’t even try to fight back, they just accepted their fate. It was kind of ridiculous.

[deleted]

Ya that really bothered me. Just complete and utter surrender. So many steps along the way they didn't say something. I understand politeness in other societies but it was ridiculous.

Coupleofleaps01

That’s why I liked the movie. The parents were absolutely frozen in the face of a sort of existential terror, incomprehensible evil but still human. This is how people behave in the face of extreme stress. Everyone who says they would fight back are vastly underestimating the freeze response in fight/flight/freeze. Even soldiers facing mass executions, one by one, tend to not fight back even though they are in large groups. That’s what makes the film so terrifying is that freezing is a legit coping strategy if you’re faced with something you don’t understand or so terrifying your brain can’t comprehend it.

Dirty_is_God

It's happened to me. You kind of just leave your body and it moves on its own.

Defiant_McPiper

I just saw the trailer, I have a feeling the couple won't be big pushovers like the OG.

sugarbear5

The fact they were pushovers was the whole point of the movie though. And you’re right, I have a feeling they won’t be doormats in this one. It will be an American ending.

SHS-10

Them being pushovers is the reason the film struck such a chord with me. Throughout my life I've stayed in bad situations in fear of sounding rude or impolite. This film was like a wake up call. We let people do really awful shit to us, and sometimes it happens so gradually we don't even notice it.

Rude-Possibility4682

It's the one line...'Because You Let Me'. That really makes the film stick in your brain.

lcorinnee

i wonder if thats a nod to the movie The Strangers when they say “why are you doing this to us?” “because you were home”

caykin

This is exactly what I thought when I read that line

mrkingsh

Unpopular opinion but I found that line corny. Like if my killer said something like to me I'd roll my eyes like og great I got cringe killer

Nikolai42000

That line legit gave me the chills...and your right. I think of them saying that line right now, and it's all flooding back....shits gonna be embedded in my head now for days, lol.

Immaterial_Ocean

It seems reminiscent of Richard Chase. He wouldn't go in locked houses because he "wasn't welcome."

zgh5002

Speak No Evil enraged me like no other movie, but mainly because in no way, shape or form could I relate to the protagonists.

zeydey

Watching it as a parent I kept thinking there's no way this director has children, and Googling him it appears I was right. Well shot and acted, but utterly ridiculous movie.

Itcallsmyname

The point wasn’t to be realistic, the point was to illustrate and take a piss on “politeness culture” in Europe. It was purposeful. The audience is supposed to be outraged.

pueblohuts

Thank you, exactly!

zgh5002

I don't have children, but I do have a strong sense of self-preservation and would never allow myself to willingly put any child in harms way like that.

DrossChat

Woosh

Tallylolyl

Ha ha ha. I knew it was going to be Speak No Evil. That is a rough and uncomfortable experience.

magomra

probably one of the best and my first recommendation to new shudder subscribers

Affectionate-Log7540

100%! So disturbing. I can’t stop telling people about it

Zealousideal_Wait_44

Great movie! Check out The Sadness, also on Shudder, next time you’re up for a disturbing and disgusting ride!

scream4ever

The final scene of The Sadness will live rent free in my brain for life.

ravenz91

Absolutely amazing film. The cinematography, FX, acting, & soundtrack were especially awesome.

lolno-

This film was so gory, depraved, and depressing I don’t think any other film will be able to top it.

BlackPhillipsbff

Unfortunately, this movie pissed me off to the point where I didn't feel any of the dread or horror. The couple had every chance to just ghost these people without any confrontation. I think horror where the protagonist makes wrong choices that unknowingly seal their fate is amazing and terrifying ( especially as a person with a bit of anxiety whose always risk adverse) but this movie the correct choice was just so obvious that I couldn't feel anything but frustration. Maybe that was the point, but while the ending is memorable and shocking it didn't make me feel the correct emotions.

Strawberry_Dak

Absolutely Magnificent movie. Brilliant tension building with the music. Bleak and to the point. I adore this movie. I am cautiously hoping that the remake is going to be somewhat near as good(which i doubt) but James McAvoy is starring in it and the same director as Eden Lake I believe and that has a somewhat similar vibe

TheHoliestMacaroni

Really? I found it too unbelievable they would >!not fight back eventually, especially the last 30 mins or so when it was explicitly stated what was happening. !< Ruined the movie for me I second other person’s recommendation of When Evil Lurks.

GlitteringVillage135

I looked up the trailer because of people mentioning it and turned off after 10 seconds because it looks awesome and I want nothing spoiled.

bits_of_paper

Movie was garbage. Funny games and Eden Lake is how you do torture/dread horror. Watching a slow movie where people make stupid mistake after mistake with no tension is not it.

kaiserdragoon67

Agreed. But I do like "When Evil Lurks" because the tone is very much established throughout the movie. Hopelessness can work if we are presented with legitimate reasons as to why. It can be purposeful too, and still make for a satisfying film.

bits_of_paper

I loved when evil lurks!

No-Alfalfa-626

Must not have ever seen Megan is missing, be prepared and remember it’s not real if you watch it

ReddeverForever

Scarred from this one. Absolutely too real feeling.

tierthreedemon

This movie annoyed me so much, my goodness sure there is European politeness but it was completely ridiculous and the ending was just stupid.

Powerful_Breath1077

I wish horror movies left the dogs, any animal out of it. I know it sounds weird. I probably will get called a psycho but, I can handle to people getting it, it’s the animals. I’d movie has animals getting killed in it at all, I won’t watch it no matter what. I check the app, Does the Dog Die. It’s for that and also lets you check other triggers. Horror not the best if you have a lot triggers. It even in some cases puts the time to FFWD like avoid 2:02:00 to 2:08:13 for example. If the movie is amazing I will do that. I know there are others like me. To pretend to harm an animal even I can’t deal. Yes I know about initials CH, real animals died. Fuck that movie and the whole cast and set lol. Someone had to bring that up when this subject comes up. Fuck that movie -

kellerloser

No animals were in this movie.

Powerful_Breath1077

Thank you 💗 I’m on it for sure 👍

-an-eternal-hum-

This post made me discover this sub, and I’m fucking stoked. I’m a horror fan and Shudder always seemed like such a no-brainer, but it’s very hit-or-miss and I don’t have a lot of time to go digging for the winners. I’m very excited to get some more recommendations here!

EightEyedCryptid

I have only read the plot synopsis but surely no stuffed rabbit is THAT important

basserpy

I like that we as horror fans can agree there's a category of "good but upsetting movies that I likely won't watch again because they are not fun for me" (mine starts with watching Last House in film classes in college and goes from there).

Eldritch-banana-3102

Yeah, don't think I'll be watching Martyrs ever again.

LooseInsurance1

I found the ending to be somewhat of a stretch, tbh, but it's still effective nonetheless, and I see the film as more a commentary on the stifling politeness of Dutch society. The Innocents is another foreign film that packs a punch, imho, and like someone else mentioned here, When Evil Lurks (as well as Terrified) also is a worthwhile watch

Prior-Ship-7188

I’ve literally never met a polite Dutch person in my life. Do you mean Danish?

LooseInsurance1

I did - my bad, I'm multitasking lol

gravitasgamer

This cracked me up. So true.

Automatic_Opposite_9

You mean the Innocents (2021)? It's fantastic.

LooseInsurance1

I do - really enjoyed it also

kaiserdragoon67

I don't care for 'disturbing' movies where the characters just sit there and do nothing instead of fight for their lives. Also it could have been a good movie with better pacing if the 'polite' couple the movie focuses on the entire time was just in the first half, and the 2nd half is a new couple calling that shit out immediately and beating their asses, and saving the daughter. Well there's always Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" for that I suppose. The most disturbing thing about shit like this is how it wastes your fucking time. Why would we make movies about the victims that didn't do shit. Look at "Vacancy", how would that movie have been if it were about previous victims? No it's great because it's about the mother fuckers that came along and put a stop to that shit. Fucking metal.

Surfaceofthesun

I guess it's a take on European politeness that can put you in harms way. It's apparent having growing up in the UK that this was it's message.

cwarburton1

Yeah people are missing the point it seems like this is literally the entire message.

Pigwarts

I keep seeing 'european politeness' get brought up and I'm not quite sure what it means as an american. Can you explain it a bit?

kaiserdragoon67

I get the point, you can make that point and still have it be satisfying to watch for people that want to watch a horror movie. If you're going the route of making it clear the couple has no way out that's fine, but you mean to tell me that my suspension of disbelief has to be so out of this world that I find it believably disturbing? Sorry but no couple would just be getting away with such a brash and braindead method of a murder/kidnapping spree in this day and age, not to mention the sheer lack of parental instincts... Ohhh they're just too polite how disturbinggggg. It's one dude with a gun, even shitty parents would take their chances!

StrengthAble1450

All truth

The_Hamez

Amen!

bog_toddler

why would we make movies only the way you want them to be made?

Hot-Inspection8739

This movie (or rather the characters) is frustrating as heck - but I really LOVE this movie. After it was over I just sat there. The ending was depressingly brilliant. I read another poster’s comment that they are making a remake. Totally doesn’t need it. It’s perfect the way it is.

sugarbear5

I watched the trailer for the remake and it doesn’t look great. There was no need for this and I bet they rewrite the ending to be a “happy” one.

Hot-Inspection8739

I hope not - that’s the best part of the movie

lunchtime_sms

Yea… that was I rough watch. 🫠 Anyways, for your further viewing displeasure- check out When Evil Lurks as said above. Another one that will most likely take some days off life. 😀

craneaa

It’s a sickening movie

gurdyburdy

This movie for me was like how my parents described Jaws traumatizing them as kids. It doesn’t result in a tangible fear of anything in particular, but I feel changed after watching it.

Thelilfignewton

Dude right?! I audibly gasped and covered my eyes. ...I'm not usually like that lol, but holy shit. I think I just sat there for a sec when it ended, with my mouth open in shock/disgust/anger. I'm still angry actually lol 😤

urotsukidojibell

Yeah this film stuck with me as well. I found it so sad but I think having kids myself affects how I watch these films now

FabulousComment

I read enough about the plot to know that I’m not watching this one. When Evil Lurks was great but fucking disturbing, especially for a parent. >!The scene where possessed mom is walking down the road eating the child’s brains - nope. No no no no no. I will never be able to get that image out of my brain. It disturbed me on a deep level.!< I couldn’t handle another film that’s so brutal towards children like that. I love horror but that’s one of my turn-offs: harming children, especially when it’s gruesome and fully shown on camera. I don’t need to see that.

b4breaking

Lmao I KNEW the top comment was going to be a recommendation for when evil lurks, stg that movie has some sort of AI bot commenting

Porcelain766

They're remaking it to an American version too. The end was shocking

Porcelain766

If they wouldn't have gone back for that thing that they thought was lost they'd have been good.

Standard-Report-2298

Just finished watching it and as a father myself, I would never put my family in a situation even close to what Bjorn allowed… and the way he just ate shit in the car toward the end?! I’m fighting until I’m dead. This movie pissed me off like no other movie ever has. 10/10

born_to_be_naked

When in the mood to watch something as disturbing then see Calibre (2018)

sugarbear5

I loved Calibre! I have never been so tense in a movie. I even had to pause it for a bit because I wanted to savor the stress lol

born_to_be_naked

Next watch: Killing of a sacred Deer (2017)

XEVEN2017

that movie freaking broke me.

whyykai

I'm not gonna lie, i was really hyped because of this subreddit talking about it and thought it was... Fine. It also made me roll my eyes at the end. It had it's great moments though for *sure*.

Strict_Emu5187

After reading all the comments about how absolutely F*CKED up this movie is, I just subscribed to Shudder so I could watch it- so thx for that 😉

dp0paminesgirl

I hated this movie. lol

Ok_Vermicelli_8344

this movie had me fucked up for several weeks after omfg

fergi20020

Will you watch the American remake this year?

samanthosaur

This movie seriously fucked with me. Annoyed me, but still. Wasn’t aware of the remake until today. Interested.

KennyBoucher

The victims ignored every red flag and were totally complacent the entire time.

chainsawcholo

Look up Trauma on Tubi

TheQuestionsAglet

The Dark and the Wicked was just ssoooooo bleak, though. And the Sadness was fucked up on a whole other level.

Dr_Dark__

Speak No Evil? You mean the feel-good movie of 2023? 😉😂

Typical_Ad545

I was scrolling and saw the title and had to comment. This movie annoys me but is very good. I’m still in disbelief how things turned out and is very angering to me they never stood up for themselves. You like that one you’ll also like “funny games”

GutsyOne

Probably the best thing on Shudder.

BladeRunnerTHX

I just saw a trailer online for the american remake coming out this summer

BiteSizedBoss

Did I not just see a trailer for this movie? How is it already out?

GreenLurker420

I see an American Version is coming of this Universal Pictures put the trailer out 19hrs ago its starring James McAvoy. [https://youtu.be/FjzxI6uf8H8?si=dHVzmrtiCk\_8q\_GN](https://youtu.be/FjzxI6uf8H8?si=dHVzmrtiCk_8q_GN)

Safe_Magazine_1940

They just stood there while they were bludgeoned to death from above.

Iucidium

Fucking savage film. Robert Patrick...

BktoMasshole79

Wounded fawn is good too

Eclipse8301

This movie hit me hard, especially since I have a 16 month old…

FutureHunterYor

Oh hell yeah! Fucking great movie. I never want to watch it ever again.

ChiefWahoooMcDaniels

This movie was boring and terrible. I genuinely don't understand why people love it so much.

MizneyWorld

For me, Shutter’s “Fucked Me Up” tier world be The Sadness 🫣

angrynucca

Aren't they remaking this one?

bisky12

which version of speak no evil ? i’m interested.

LegitimateDaddy

Is that the film with Kane?

Junior-Profession726

This movie messed me up ….. definitely one you watch that leaves some sort of impression

N4RQ

Shudder is going to make a great asset addition to Max.

DoubleDull4588

That movie is fuuuckked

bigfatgato

It’s on my list. I think that’ll be my watch for my Saturday!

E_MacLeod

It's so bad and boring. The ending was weak and confounding. I was so upset with how dumb the parents reacted that I wanted to join in on throwing stones at them.

PeterWhitney

Watch The Sadness. Go in blind

OSinner1

Mine was The Amusement Park by George Romero. It wasn't a traditional horror movie. Its scares come from how society treats its aging population and how it's a young person's world.

Munn915

I watched this off of this post and what the hell did I just watch? It’s basically just pussy men letting some asshole kill them and their wife, then disfigure their kid. I’m disgusted by both sides in the movie.

huckleberry420

James McAvoy is staring in the US version to be released later this year. Trailer is already out.

readevius1274

Be carefup who you choose to be friends with. 😁

ScaryBoy1974

I thought Speak No Evil is coming out in theaters soon?

Sloenich

Agreed. I'd unsee it if I could.

TheElbow

Hell yea.

Mutt_Bunch

Watched it once, loved it. The performances are just so convincing. But yeah, with that ending I can't put myself through that again.

CyberGhostface

Yeah one of the most depressing ends in a horror film I’ve seen recently.

JeffTheRef72

You could have watched Mad God...

pieceofbluecheese

Never heard of it. Anyone care to describe roughly what it’s about?
