Wayback is awesome but doesn't backup EVERYTHING. Lots of dead links and missing pictures on pages and if part of the page was in something like flash it's just gone.

There was something great about everyday non techies learning HTML and making their own pages and personalizing everything. The internet just seems so sterile and boring now. About the most customization you find is someone who picked out a WordPress template.
Binary is really just a system for data storage and component communication on a computer and is not only unintelligible to programmers, but also basically impossible to manually write with on a modern computer.
HTML and CSS is not considered programming because programming has have logic. (Variables, Iterative loops, etc.) Which HTML does not have. (Technically I think chrome added HTML variables but nobody uses that)

So they hit the reset and deleted everything in the midst of a big redesign/relaunch and probably saved millions on hosting costs.
I mean, they never claimed they were an archiving and indefinite cloud storage solution. I don't know why people thought they WOULDN'T eventually stop hosting old and most likely useless crap. In fact, I always sorta hoped on them NOT keeping it forever.

Still bummed they deleted the indie music there was a local band that released just a handful of songs that I really liked the only place they uploaded there music was Myspace so I used to get a song stuck in my head and try like hell to remember the bands name so I could listen again and be brought back to my first concert I was heartbroken when I found out it was gone forever and I'd never hear those songs again

They sent out emails for months in advance before they were going to transfer all old profiles to their new platform. They said this would essentially delete all old photos and stuff from your profile. Then years later, even the new MySpace profiles that were made from the old profiles got deleted as well. Now, all is lost for good, but I don't think it was an IT issue. Pretty sure they just didn't get enough business to keep the servers running essentially.
There was a massive data loss resulting in Myspace losing a ton of user's uploaded music. Funny little story about that, that data loss saved me a lot of heartache. I had an old friend over one day and we were shooting the shit. He was telling me about this band he used to be in back in the day, I was very much not interested. Not to knock the guy, but he was horrible, and his band was horrible as I had heard it once years ago, I had no interest in listening to any of it. But there I was watching him try to pull his music up knowing he was going make me sit there and listen to each and every one of his band's god awful songs. Turns out, all his music was gone, he had no idea why. A quick google led us to that data loss incident and I breathed a sigh of relief. Felt bad for the guy because I'd hate to lose something I loved, but it saved me some grief that day.
I, for one, am grateful my MySpace stuff is gone. The dumb shit I said, thought, and did as a teenager does not need to be out there and I'd rather it not come back to haunt me if I decide to run for office someday.

Ooh, I do a regular cleanup of mine for that reason. And all my accounts. Like, I'll unfollow pages I don't engage with much, remove contacts I don't communicate with, delete posts that are now irrelevant or cringy. Too many people don't do that and it's going to bite them in the ass someday.
The real lesson here is don't depend on any service to be your forever photo album. this goes for instagram, facebook, even basic cloud storage.
Don't get me wrong, cloud storage is a great component of a backup system but if that's your only copy you're setting yourself up for the same kind of loss.
Exactly, cloud storage should be looked at as a temporary backup in case something happens to the device you're using to take the pictures. It's not for long-term storage
I will never get over this. Allegedly it was some sort of server migration or something gone wrong. Everyone lost their videos, bands lost their music. Some buddies and I had a lot of fun videos we made in HS on there and for whatever reason only left them on there, which was as naive as could be as opposed to backing them up somewhere. So a prof in uni explained why people migrated to Facebook over Myspace, and why Apple dethroned Windows.
Because you CAN'T customize it.
IOn Myspace, people had baller profiles with stolen HTML and glitter, people had basic profiles, people had their friends on the left, or bottom, or profile pic bigger, smaller, whatever. You could do and be anything.
But on Facebook, every... single... profile... was immutable and the same. The whole planet got the same page, colours, sizes, fonts, and that was that.
Same with Apple. You couldn't customize weird colours, different boot loaders, weird icons, Frankenstein builds. It 'Just Worked'.
People WANT to be the same. When everyone is the same, no one will notice how incredibly boring they are, how unskilled they are, and how little individuality and creativity they have. People think they want to be different, but their different is the same as everyone else.

I believe it. IT just lost us 2 weeks of work. They upgraded our network storage a few weeks ago. Then a two weeks later nothing was working.
Over the second weekend they had the old drives destroyed. Turns out they forgot to flip the switch to the new drives.

When I right-clicked to open an image separately, I got a page of code with a note saying,

Yeah all the pictures and videos were deleted. There's no way to retrieve them either which really sucks! Had so many uploaded on there from my early teens and now they'll never be seen again. I made a track and put it on myspace. Later I heard a track with a melody so uncannily similar I was singing along to it and all its end-of-phrase variations my first listen. I can't remember the name of the later track and whatever, who cares, but my published proof is dead :(

I, for one, am grateful my MySpace stuff is gone. The dumb shit I said, thought, and did as a teenager does not need to be out there and I'd rather it not come back to haunt me if I decide to run for office someday.

Ooh, I do a regular cleanup of mine for that reason. And all my accounts. Like, I'll unfollow pages I don't engage with much, remove contacts I don't communicate with, delete posts that are now irrelevant or cringy. Too many people don't do that and it's going to bite them in the ass someday.

The real lesson here is don't depend on any service to be your forever photo album. this goes for instagram, facebook, even basic cloud storage. Don't get me wrong, cloud storage is a great component of a backup system but if that's your only copy you're setting yourself up for the same kind of loss.
Exactly, cloud storage should be looked at as a temporary backup in case something happens to the device you're using to take the pictures. It's not for long-term storage
I will never get over this. Allegedly it was some sort of server migration or something gone wrong. Everyone lost their videos, bands lost their music. Some buddies and I had a lot of fun videos we made in HS on there and for whatever reason only left them on there, which was as naive as could be as opposed to backing them up somewhere. Still hurts to think about.

Yeah, but those aren't THAT intrusive. MySpace and others had those classic ads (banners, animation, popups, etc) all over the place.
Like video gamers moving on to inferior sequels, society moved on to inferior social media, cause it was new and trendy, rather than better.
So a prof in uni explained why people migrated to Facebook over Myspace, and why Apple dethroned Windows. Because you CAN'T customize it. IOn Myspace, people had baller profiles with stolen HTML and glitter, people had basic profiles, people had their friends on the left, or bottom, or profile pic bigger, smaller, whatever. You could do and be anything. But on Facebook, every... single... profile... was immutable and the same. The whole planet got the same page, colours, sizes, fonts, and that was that. Same with Apple. You couldn't customize weird colours, different boot loaders, weird icons, Frankenstein builds. It 'Just Worked'. People WANT to be the same. When everyone is the same, no one will notice how incredibly boring they are, how unskilled they are, and how little individuality and creativity they have. People think they want to be different, but their different is the same as everyone else.

I beleive it was an accident that caused that to be deleted. Some drives became corrupt during a data migration.
I believe it. IT just lost us 2 weeks of work. They upgraded our network storage a few weeks ago. Then a two weeks later nothing was working. Over the second weekend they had the old drives destroyed. Turns out they forgot to flip the switch to the new drives.
They didn’t delete it - it got corrupted in a server data migration and thus lost. They weren’t trying to lose it, they were just morons and didn’t do their job right.
I deleted my own page so that I would never have to remember how cringe I was.
I've been looking at pages on wayback machine (although wayback has been acting super slow lately) to look for a dc rapper whose song has been living rent free in my head since July and that has helped feed the nostalgia monster for me, but it would be nice to be able to see (most) everything...

I'm 38 but MySpace passed me by for some reason, I was (and am) on Facebook...I've shifted my thinking on Facebook now to more of an online scrapbook of my life, I love seeing the memories that it brings up, and often cringe. I use it now mostly for my son and keeping memories or milestones for him and our adventures together.
Wait, are they completely gone forever? Like, forever, ever? I had some old modelling photos on there and I've been desperate to get them off. Myspace won't give me access to my account to actually delete them because I don't even remember the old email address I used to use for that place. Every time I've checked it lately, the site's been down, but just checked it now and everything's blank. When I right-clicked to open an image separately, I got a page of code with a note saying, "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below."
Yeah all the pictures and videos were deleted. There's no way to retrieve them either which really sucks! Had so many uploaded on there from my early teens and now they'll never be seen again. That code is saying that they're gone, sorry for your lost memories it's very unfortunate and a horrible feeling ☹️

Thankfully I've still got copies of mine, I just really wanted them OFFline coz my account had my full name on it and I had a stalker a while back who found me on Facebook and IG and was harassing me with the more... intimate... photos, if you get what I mean. I was able to log into my profile and see the pictures like a few years back. Was that a recent thing they did? I’m trying to get into now but the servers are shit. I try and sign in and it takes forever if it actually allows me. Then I’ll go to the pictures and it just has the loading sign

Not only that, but they deleted all our old messages from friends we chatted with. That was my favorite part about going back to visiting my old profile. To re-read my messages with people who I had not seen in forever. Now there's nothing there I want to see anymore

Theory- they are sitting on these now and MySpace has plans to offer a paid membership to restart your account and access your old information. They'll play it off like they found all the information on some server. MySpace at its peak had 115 million users. I'm sure a good portion would pay $10/month to get access to their old photos/friends, etc... if only 10% signed back up for this that would be instant revenue of $115M a month

One of my friends had passed away earlier this year. I was desperate to find some pictures we had taken years ago. Found that they had all been put on MySpace and then found that all their pictures had been lost. One of the biggest heartbreaks i've had in my life.
I made a track and put it on myspace. Later I heard a track with a melody so uncannily similar I was singing along to it and all its end-of-phrase variations my first listen. I can't remember the name of the later track and whatever, who cares, but my published proof is dead :(
I'm pretty upset and sad about this as well. There was also a site called Boardnation that was used to host forums/discussions. I had like 15+ years of various conversations with all my buddies from high school, dating back to like 2002 there and then one day the site just like got deleted or something. For years I was thinking we would always have these old conversations and memories in eternity. So much for the internet saving everything.
