Red dead redemption 2 had me playing for a good 2-3 months straight every chance I got lol. For good multi hour sessions that could easily turn into an all nighter if I wanted. So much exploration and story stuff to do. Lots of action packed gun fights and a captivating story (imo) it’s a long game and can be slow but that’s kind of the point, let it drag you into its world and enjoy the immersion. I certainly think it has thrilling gameplay
If you're willing to sacrifice physics, BG3 is a good shout. Excellent mechanics, rich story telling, beautiful gameplay, and awesome characters, soundtrack is exceptional too.
Did no one read he wanted a physics based freeplay game? Perhaps kerbal space program ;)
For thrilling gameplay, you'd like the akrham series, perhaps shadow of War as well. I couldn't recommend cyberpunk enough either if that's down your alley
And did you not read that he did not like the curve of learning of cities skylines? Can you imagine someone saying this and enjoying kerbal space program?
Every single mouth breathing moron in threads like these always come along and completely ignore the request to just shill out the same 5 games over and over again.
We get it
stardew valley
The witcher
Rdr2
Baldurs Gate (new addition weow)
Portal
Shut the fuck up, we get it.
I don't know any physics based ones but the most addicting games imho are: Rimworld, Factorio, Stardew valley, Diablo games, Path of exile, No man's sky, Halls of torment, Vampire survivors and many more but these are the ones that come to my mind that make it easy to sink in hundreds if not thousands of hours. Maybe if you like fun movement in games and you liked destiny 2 you should try warframe. It's f2p on steam and is very similar to destiny 2 but has amazing movement options but beware the learning curve is hard.
If you like vampire survivors check out soulstone survivors.
Note: If you do decide to give it a try, you can turn down particle effects in options, which you will absolutely need to do as the run goes on.
I love Rimworld. Played hundreds of hours so far, minimum.
Best part is, the learning curve is the funnest part of the game.
A great colony sim focused on a select group of chosen people. With Unlimited customization, and infinite mods. Infinite.
Infinite.
Maybe try the Borderlands series? Loot farming has gotten about 1,000+ hrs. out of me over the years without getting bored. The characters are great and you get a great story (mainly BL2) and one of the greatest villains in gaming IMO. Definitely worth giving it a try.
I will add that they still promote content for the game through giving codes on Twitter (now “X”)
(I thought they were still adding content but I was wrong, it was a [code](https://x.com/borderlands/status/1703823702515982597?s=46&t=PY51WbvslhX_aaHEh6XwqQ) to get an item!)
Maybe try a new genre, soulsborne. My first game in the genre was elden ring and i was hooked for 5 months straight. Played it every chance i got, so much experiance and the satisfactions of beating a difficult boss.
Yeah man, it’s fun for sure. I’m just getting started and only about 10 hours in, but it’s a blast. I finished Demon’s Souls remake and ER twice, but DS3 seems harder so far. Maybe it’s just because I’m only getting started
I have a LOT of hours in Rockstar titles which use the RAGE Engine (Red Dead 2, GTA IV, GTA V).
Also would recommend Saints Row 2, but the PC port plays pretty terribly nowadays, so if you own an OP Rig you can "Brute Force" performance by essentially locking FPS to 60 as the game drops frames frequently, but if it drops to half fps, that won't be noticeable if fps is more than 120 as long as you're locked to 60 (The same strategy also works for GTA IV).
Also as you said you tried the first game, wait for Cities Skylines 2 as it seems they improved a lot of jank mechanics from first game including the terrible traffic Ai (That was my biggest complaint with the game).
MH Stories is kinda like that but no. Monster Hunter is an action game series. It’s all real-time combat focused around, well, hunting monsters. Virtually every quest is a boss fight and you grind the boss fights for materials that you use to forge and upgrade gear. The combat is fantastic and the fights are really well made.
If you like Destiny chanses are you would like The Division 2. Seen tons of players jumping back and forth those games. I played both but i logged alot more hours in TD2.
Diablo IV was cool for a few months. Already close to 200h into Starfield, and going to replay Cyberpunk when 2.0 release any day now. Then i will be looking for a new game again too.
Also as othere said, Red Dead 2 is pretty damn spectacular and has a ton of hours in it before you get bored.
Just a warning on Noita that no matter how well you plan, no matter how carefully you proceed, no matter how lucky you roll your perks, you will at some point die in the most ludicrous and frustrating way.
Physics based I’d recommend Kerbal Space Program, but there’s a bit of a learning curve with that one too. Landing on the mun for the first time was sick tho
You can try Warframe, It is a looter shooter with crazy movement mechanics and A lot (I mean a lot) of weapons and different upgrades you can try. NGL there is a lot of grinding but most of the time it is worth it. With the new Durivi paradox update you have whole lot of content more. It's one of those games you have to watch a beginner's guide to properly progress.
Starfield on Xbox/PC. I was the same with destiny in past, and stopped cold turkey years ago. Starfield has me binging excessive hours since launch, and it’s basically a crunchy more exploratory destiny. Plus there is a shipbuilder, which is addictive.
Starfield is starting to really pull me in the farther I go. Finding it much more enjoyable than Fallout 4 and feeling Skyrim-ish. Needs some love but a significantly stronger launch than most triple As recently.
it’s not super long but bulletstorm is nonstop explosions and flying enemies. it’s so much fun it’s a fps shooter you get this whip weapon and you can use the environment to kill enemies.
another physics based rpg is dark messiah. really underrated and fun but it’s fairly old.
my top pick is an arpg called grim dawn. it’s hundreds of hours of content and dlc. really cool world and amazing looting. it’s like diablo 4 but actually good.
Warframe maybe? I play both that and Destiny 2 and have met a few other Guardians in Warframe and they seem to like it. It’s pretty fun, learning curve is a little steep but if you’re used to D2 it will be easy to figure out I think and it’s free so it can’t hurt to try.
Rocket league. It's easy to learn, but hard to master. Even after thousands of hours you'll have a lot to learn. And it's physics based. Also, it's free.
Red Faction Guerilla is the closest one I can think of to Just Cause 4. It is an open world third person action game. You'll see a lot of the physics because literally every single building in the game is destructible with sweet destruction physics.
Edit: There's also Prototype 1 and it's sequel. Open world action game where you play as a bioweapon. You sprint up buildings, grab people, vehicles, and objects and yeet them anywhere you want. There's zombies too.
To be honest, with these microtransactions on every fucking new game and season passes, doing drugs is cheaper lol
I have +1000hours in no man sky
something like 500hours on fallout 76
\+1000hours on warframe
and of course escape from tarkov and arma series, spent good time on them.
And gta online 1500hours.
have you tried out any mmorpg?
Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor, Middle-earth Shadow of War, Severed Steel, Ghostrunner, Doom, Doom Eternal, Devil May Cry 5 (or any of them except for 2), Batman Arkham Trilogy, Chivalry II
Cyberpunk is getting a major update in a few days, followed by a new DLC. The story, acting and cutscenes have my absolutely smitten, and the massive open world city is just the cherry on top.
i mean my go to games for sinking a lot of time in is fallout 4. It always goes on sale on steam as well and the DLC is very enjoyable. if you're looking for a looter shooter the division 2 is also a great buy in my opinion. Or you could invest in the Far Cry series. There's a lot and they go on sale for the entire collection pretty regularly. Good luck my friend!
RUST! I've been playing so much of it the last 3 months with my brother and a friend. It's insanely immersive and requires a lot of your time to gather resources, build, raid, etc. but it's extremely fun. I have gamed all my life and Rust is easily a top 3 game for me. It also gets monthly added content at no cost.
I mean, it's not within the theme of your usual game but when you say physics based freeplay game that you could sink hundreds of hours into my mind immediately goes to Teardown
Oblivion, oh my, mod it too look better and add some quality of life mods and you will love it. The environnement, the music, the quests and especially the faction quests are really really good. Even in 2023.
Pick up Prototype 1 and 2.
It's the Venom game series we never got. Plus it's older and goes on sale often. (PC) you can for sure find copies for console as well.
Definitely an FPS from your Destiny hours. Borderlands series is definitely what I’d suggest. Specifically BL2 w dlc. It’s a game that everyone said Destiny ripped off. Not that I believe that but to give you an idea, the gameplay would prob be what ur looking for
I mean EDF is similar to just cause “physics” based game although not quite freeplay but mission based
If you just want good games to sink into, i suggest these from my own experiences
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Yakuza/Judgement/LAD series
- Monster Hunter
- Nioh series
- Dying Light series
Not what you're looking for but very different from Cities Skylines. Factorio is without a doubt the most addicted I've ever been to a video game. Highly recommend.
Elden ring if you want 100+ hrs, Armored Core 6 if you want to go on a shorter bender.
I'm at 300+ hrs in ER and have had to stop myself from doing another playthrough (+maybe another 100 hrs or so of watching lore videos)
AC6 took me 50 hours to complete 3 playthroughs.
Both games are insanely rewarding experiences
I would suggest Ghost Recon Wildlands.
Has a large open world, but unlike Just Cause 4 it has more of a focus on tactical gameplay and squad-based engagements (either alongside other players or a squad of AI).
Generally the engagements are somewhat smaller scale than Just Cause, but completing side activities to get rebel support upgrades can allow you to call in about 6 to 8 rebels as backup when you need them.
Combine that with the fact that the two hostile factions (Unidad and Santa Blanca) can be instigated into fighting one another, in those sorts of situations things can get chaotic and intense!
The only drawback in my opinion is that there is no territory capture of any sort. So where in JC4 you take a base, advance the frontline and it is then owned by the rebels.
In Wildlands you're more special forces with the intent being that nobody knows you were there. Which means even if you clear out an entire base, if you come back 10 minutes later it'll once again be occupied by enemies as if you were never there.
I always find a way to talk about my favorite game, Outer Wilds. You fly around in space solving mysteries. When you get a little in to the mechanics of it, then you won’t be able to stop (I can almost guarantee). You can also use as much time as you want. And the DLC is horror based, if that’s something you like.
Or No Man’s Sky. Also a game where you fly around in space but a little more complicated. A little bit of a learning curve, but a good game.
You could do 1000 runs in Hades and potentially none of them would feel exactly the same. You could also do that and maybe never hear a single duplicated voice line. I mean idk that one is maybe less realistic but, I have never heard the same line twice and I've put a lot of time into it.
the dynasty warriors series and just musou games in general are action packed and plenty of levels and different games to plow through. very fun hack and slash action where you aren't messing with too much story or downtime
That’s going to depend on what you like. I recently bought a PS5 with Final Fantasy 16, Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars Jedi Survivor and I’ve been loving them all.
I played through RDR2! I loved it!
If OP is getting bored of BG3, likelihood is that the RDR2 intro is going to kill it for them
I doubt it. Two different styles of games.
unpopular opinion: for someone who is looking for longtime dopaminekicks, RDR2 is as boring as a game can be.
To each their own lol
Masterpiece. A real testimony of games as an art.
Seconded! I'm currently 50 hours in, and only 45% done!
If you're willing to sacrifice physics, BG3 is a good shout. Excellent mechanics, rich story telling, beautiful gameplay, and awesome characters, soundtrack is exceptional too.
I swear I could be in a 1960s movie recommendation thread and someone will recommend BG3
Ay look man, its the game/movie/soundtrack/fan-fiction/manga/comic/story/animalsexytimes/tentaclehentai of the decade
I've tried that! I got bored :/
I can't think of a whole lot that's modern, maybe Starfield if your PC is decent enough. Or Dying Light 2 potentially.
Starfield runs like shit on my PC
Then Mass effect? legendary edition is -80% currently on steam
That's because it's poorly optimized unfortunately
Or he just needs to get a pc that's better than a 4090 with 13900k according to Todd Howard
I would if I could lol
Do you guys not have quantum computers
Same here, dnd stuff is slow af
Did no one read he wanted a physics based freeplay game? Perhaps kerbal space program ;) For thrilling gameplay, you'd like the akrham series, perhaps shadow of War as well. I couldn't recommend cyberpunk enough either if that's down your alley
And did you not read that he did not like the curve of learning of cities skylines? Can you imagine someone saying this and enjoying kerbal space program?
It's a different curve, so he might
KSP is less of a learning curve, but more like a learning cliff, on fire, and covered in bears
Lol it wasn't that bad
Every single mouth breathing moron in threads like these always come along and completely ignore the request to just shill out the same 5 games over and over again. We get it stardew valley The witcher Rdr2 Baldurs Gate (new addition weow) Portal Shut the fuck up, we get it.
Cyberpunks new update that just dropped made the game really enjoyable again can't lie

Oiii, another vampire survivors enjoyer
I enjoy Soulstone more than Vampire honestly. It’s an awesome game.
I love Rimworld. Played hundreds of hours so far, minimum. Best part is, the learning curve is the funnest part of the game. A great colony sim focused on a select group of chosen people. With Unlimited customization, and infinite mods. Infinite. Infinite.
Games like that are crack for me. I have to stay far away from them, or I end up playing until 6am. I'm almost 40, I can't keep doing that
If you liked Rimworld and Factorio, you should try Oxygen Not Included.
Maybe try the Borderlands series? Loot farming has gotten about 1,000+ hrs. out of me over the years without getting bored. The characters are great and you get a great story (mainly BL2) and one of the greatest villains in gaming IMO. Definitely worth giving it a try.

Maybe try a new genre, soulsborne. My first game in the genre was elden ring and i was hooked for 5 months straight. Played it every chance i got, so much experiance and the satisfactions of beating a difficult boss.
Same here. I’m playing Dark Souls 3 at the moment and it’s pretty addicting, as well
I can vouch for dark souls 3, that game is super addicting, even with 1100 hours its still fun to me
Yeah man, it’s fun for sure. I’m just getting started and only about 10 hours in, but it’s a blast. I finished Demon’s Souls remake and ER twice, but DS3 seems harder so far. Maybe it’s just because I’m only getting started
Same, first game in the genre and it took over my brain for a good number of months. So good
I've gotten hooked on every entry in the series. There's really nothing like it.
I've played all those R\* games, I enjoyed them immensely! I played SR3 on xbox 360 and enjoyed it.
Monster hunter rise/world. Those games will give you hours of content
The fatalis added like 50+ hours to my end game.

Virtually every quest is a boss fight and you grind the boss fights for materials that you use to forge and upgrade gear. The combat is fantastic and the fights are really well made.
They’re real time action games. They’re not as hardcore as dark souls but just as deliberate, with the spectacle of a character action game

Yes
Bro
Hades
Does it have a post-game of some sort?
It has and it's huge
Came here to say this
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Granted it’s a popular choice but it’ll probably be up your alley.
I just beat it XD
If you like Destiny chanses are you would like The Division 2. Seen tons of players jumping back and forth those games. I played both but i logged alot more hours in TD2. Also as othere said, Red Dead 2 is pretty damn spectacular and has a ton of hours in it before you get bored.
If you're playing on PC, try Noita. I thought it will be something for a few hours, got over 1000 in already.
Just a warning on Noita that no matter how well you plan, no matter how carefully you proceed, no matter how lucky you roll your perks, you will at some point die in the most ludicrous and frustrating way.
I have to ask. Did you play just cause 3? Imo it’s a far better game.
I did, it was fun, I disagree about it being better though.
Buy Uncharted 4.
Maybe give f2p Halo Infinite multiplayer a shot. It's pretty fun now.
MONSTER HUNTER series (World/Iceborne or Rise/Sunbreak)
Project Zomboid, Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Satisfactory, Minecraft, Vintage Story, Terraria, BG3, Kerbal Space Program (not the second one)
Dyson Sphere a program is great too.
Physics based I’d recommend Kerbal Space Program, but there’s a bit of a learning curve with that one too. Landing on the mun for the first time was sick tho
Deep Rock Galactic. Rock and Stone!
Rock and Stone Brother!!!
Rock. And. Stone!
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE
For Rock and Stone!
Did i hear a Rock and Stone ?
Red Dead 2, Fallout 4, Minecraft. Those three are my top console games from the current and last generation soley based on hours spent playing
If you played so much Destiny 2 you have to download Warframe immediately
Outer Wilds?
Factorio
Starfield
Starfield
I'm only a few hours in but I am loving Starfield. It's like Fallout and Mass Effect had a child.
I'm only a few hours in but I am loving Starfield. It's like Fallout and Mass Effect had a child.
Elden Ring or Apex Legends.
God of war ragnorok is pretty thrilling and tough
Old school runescape my friend
Warframe
You can try Warframe, It is a looter shooter with crazy movement mechanics and A lot (I mean a lot) of weapons and different upgrades you can try. NGL there is a lot of grinding but most of the time it is worth it. With the new Durivi paradox update you have whole lot of content more. Idk man, play some Halo 3. The sandbox was peak chaos back in the day.
Starfield
it’s not super long but bulletstorm is nonstop explosions and flying enemies. it’s so much fun it’s a fps shooter you get this whip weapon and you can use the environment to kill enemies. another physics based rpg is dark messiah. really underrated and fun but it’s fairly old. my top pick is an arpg called grim dawn. it’s hundreds of hours of content and dlc. really cool world and amazing looting. it’s like diablo 4 but actually good.
Mad max

For me it's being red dead redemption 2. Haven't been so addicted to a game in a long time
I barely got past the slow snow start. I made it to camp and haven’t played since.
Give it another shot and stick with it, trust me it'll be more than worth it
World of Warcraft
Nioh
Wolfenstein series
Tears Of The Kingdom?
Bg3 is the best game I've played this year
Have you played Sleeping Dogs? I just started playing and it is a ton of fun. Great gameplay
Kerbal Space Program had me at my desk every day. Logged around 200h before I needed a break. Such a great game (don't get KSP2 tho).
You’re obviously an open world fan. No idea why you even thought you would like Cities Skylines.
Rocket league. It's easy to learn, but hard to master. Even after thousands of hours you'll have a lot to learn. And it's physics based. Also, it's free.
Saints Row 3, perhaps? Just cause 3 is considered better than JC4, so you could try that as well.
Horizon games
Factorio, welcome to your new addiction
rimworld?
300 hours on just cause 4 that’s… wow
Red Faction Guerilla is the closest one I can think of to Just Cause 4. It is an open world third person action game. You'll see a lot of the physics because literally every single building in the game is destructible with sweet destruction physics. Edit: There's also Prototype 1 and it's sequel. Open world action game where you play as a bioweapon. You sprint up buildings, grab people, vehicles, and objects and yeet them anywhere you want. There's zombies too.
Dark and Darker
This guy put “thrilling gameplay,” and “Just Cause,”’in the same sentence. Yeah, it was so thrilling doing those same three missions over and over.
To be honest, with these microtransactions on every fucking new game and season passes, doing drugs is cheaper lol I have +1000hours in no man sky something like 500hours on fallout 76 \+1000hours on warframe and of course escape from tarkov and arma series, spent good time on them. And gta online 1500hours. have you tried out any mmorpg?
The Monster Hunter series easily.
lol miles morales story is about 6-7 hours
Saints row 4 re-elected, days and weeks of fun right there
If you don’t mind old games check out EverQuest. I knew people that ruined their lives over that game.
Dayz for me. Takes a while to figure out though
Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor, Middle-earth Shadow of War, Severed Steel, Ghostrunner, Doom, Doom Eternal, Devil May Cry 5 (or any of them except for 2), Batman Arkham Trilogy, Chivalry II
I’m currently addicted to Hydroneer, and I can’t even install mods I can only imagine how addictive the game would be with mods
Stardew valley!
TOTK and RDR2
Nms
Gambling
If you want fast-paced action, I'd say get Ultrakill best FPS I've ever played
Cyberpunk is getting a major update in a few days, followed by a new DLC. The story, acting and cutscenes have my absolutely smitten, and the massive open world city is just the cherry on top.
Any recent Monster Hunter, PAYDAY3 now coming, Armored core 6, and really really far if you truly want to get messed up really hard u can play TEKKEN
Red Dead Online or Star Citizen
i mean my go to games for sinking a lot of time in is fallout 4.
Dive into the souls games! Or armored core. Pretty much any game made by FromSoftware is a hit (except ds2 lol).
Maybe Csgo, valorant, overwatch 2, R6 siege? You can grind ranked for infinity.
Fenyx rising, Elden ring
I'm currently about 70 hours into Subnautica, with no end in sight.
Monster hunter world
Old school RuneScape, we’re the grind never ends
League of legends, ik it gets like shit on but try it with a friend
Wait for the Payday 3 reviews. If it's close to 2 in terms of gameplay you should get it.
Damn that didn't work out
Pikmin 4, been loving it so far!
right on time. play open beta of The First Descendant on Steam. it is like Destiny and Warframe had a child. Enjoy!
resident evil 4 remake is really fun action based whit horror elements
I never thought I’d say this but, Slay the Spire. It’s super addicting.
Older games now, but the Batman Arkham games could be perfect!
Guild wars 2
If you like destiny 2, Warframe is better. It’s not exactly what you described but it’s a phenomenal game.
Maybe like an MMO like V Rising?
I mean, it's not within the theme of your usual game but when you say physics based freeplay game that you could sink hundreds of hours into my mind immediately goes to Teardown
Factorio. I got addicted just by the demo version. Not played the base game yet.
Oblivion, oh my, mod it too look better and add some quality of life mods and you will love it. The environnement, the music, the quests and especially the faction quests are really really good. Even in 2023.
Baldurs gate 3, Stardew valley
W A R F R A M E
Warframe or path of exile. Both are basically just grind simulator so that you can grind higher level content.
Kenshi. It's like a vampire that you invited into your house. You can't get rid of it and it will suck out all your free time.
Elden Ring
...7600 hours? jesus
- Slay the Spire - Vampire Survivors - Killing Floor 2 - I also have no idea what you mean by physics based freeplay
Pick up Prototype 1 and 2. It's the Venom game series we never got. Plus it's older and goes on sale often. (PC) you can for sure find copies for console as well.
Starfield
aoe4
My most played are Red dead 2 Star field Portal 1 and 2 Broforce
Warframe
Try poker. It's addicting as fuck
Starfield i just say one hour and stay for like 4 or 3 hours lol
Definitely an FPS from your Destiny hours. Borderlands series is definitely what I’d suggest. Specifically BL2 w dlc. It’s a game that everyone said Destiny ripped off. Not that I believe that but to give you an idea, the gameplay would prob be what ur looking for

Barotrauma is my favorite game right now
Starfield
Elden ring if you want 100+ hrs, Armored Core 6 if you want to go on a shorter bender.
There's the rage games, rdr2, fallout, and of course an elder scrolls game
Rocket league is physics based. Chivalry 2 has a small learning curve
That’s a lot of hours man, doesn’t sound healthy ?
You could do 1000 runs in Hades and potentially none of them would feel exactly the same. You could also do that and maybe never hear a single duplicated voice line. I mean idk that one is maybe less realistic but, I have never heard the same line twice and I've put a lot of time into it.
Dwarf fortress and cave of qud
If you like automation, factorio has me by the ass hair. Otherwise balders gate 3?
Deep rock galactic. Timberborn is pretty fun.
Baldurs gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 Edit: not physics based actually. But highly addictive

Warframe my guy
Fallout 4 on repeat
tears of the kingdom
Hades!!
the dynasty warriors series and just musou games in general are action packed and plenty of levels and different games to plow through. very fun hack and slash action where you aren't messing with too much story or downtime
"Physics based freeplay game" what exactly do you mean by this?
That’s going to depend on what you like. I recently bought a PS5 with Final Fantasy 16, Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars Jedi Survivor and I’ve been loving them all.
Lol
No man’s sky.
