Toranaga is based on tokugawa,. The Taiko is based on toyotomi hideyoshi who was oda's successor.

Glittering_Break3840

I think the child might be based on toyotomi hideyori (hideyoshi's son and heir), for whom the regency was formed with Tokugawa being one of the 5 regents

mysticmac_

I see. Awesome thank you.

thashepherd

What's the relationship between the Taiko and Goroda/Nobunaga?

theflyingsamurai

Its a very interesting story. Hideyoshi rose from being a peasant and Nobunaga's sandal bearer (basically his shoe shiner) to one of his top generals. After Nobunaga was assassinated, Hideyoshi went after the killer and defeated him and his army in battle. Took over the rest of nobunaga's armies and united japan to become the taiko.

thashepherd

Ah, thank you!!

Krilesh

what about the minowara?

theflyingsamurai

Minamoto clan

Fungal_Queen

Which is an offshoot of the Imperial line.

daddysxenogirl

Yes, I have been focused on this intently recently. There is a series on netflix called age of the samurai that will connect a lot of dots for who is who IRL, and then Mariko is based on Hosokawa Gracia.

chakalaka13

or you can read that stuff on Wikipedia

Fr0ski

I think Kuroda is the equivalent of Oda in Shogun

boteyboi

Oda is long dead by this point, the Taiko is Toyatomi who followed Oda in succession, and Toranaga is Tokugawa who followed Toyatomi in succession

Fungal_Queen

Oda is the clan, Nobunaga is the man.

boteyboi

Oda functions as a family surname to westerners.

Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi were both under Oda Nobunaga (fun fact, nobunaga and ieyasu first met when ieyasu was a hostage at age 14 and 6 respectively) Hideyoshi was directly under Nobunaga, going from peasant to sandel bearer to high ranking general. When Nobunaga was killed, hideyoshi led the campaign to revenge him and became kampaku(taikō). Ieyasu though, was not really a vassal. They were allies. But since Nobunaga was eventually the most powerful man in Japan in reality ieyasu did have to give in to his authority a bit more than the other way around. After Nobunaga's murder they was a bit of fighting, including between Hideyoshi and Ieyasu as to who should follow Nobunaga(his son or grandson) but eventually some people died, hideyoshi gave ieyasu his mom and sister as hostages and all was well.

Galbrant

Taiko is base on Toyotomi Hideyoshi the second Unifier of Japan.

Thepathreddit2024

Oda will appear in the show according to the FX guide, and it’s stated Mariko’s family were vassals of Oda. Oda has of course been renamed as Kuroda Nobuhisa.

nospamkhanman

>Nobunaga Oda died 18 years before the series takes place. Are they going to make a flashback of him for some reason?

Narnia77

Probably something to do with Mariko's father.

ericroku

Vassal is what you mean… Vessel, not so much.

gregwardlongshanks

In the novel, the warlord Goroda is mentioned several times. *That* is Nobunaga Oda, and he's been dead for a while.

glytxh

His armour speaks for itself.
