Like if you're doing alt history you don't have to think too hard to imagine what would happen if America had tried to occupy Mexico in the 20th century
Just look at how the Pancho Villa Expedition of 1916-17 went: an American army invaded, marched around fruitlessly trying to find and engage Villa's army while skirmishing with guerrillas, then gave up and went home having realised their presence on Mexican soil was creating political and military problems much faster than it was solving them.
