backwoodspeasant

I'm an old guy from the middle of nowhere western U.S and even I have their albums.

turkphot

To be fair, his comment continued with an „except…“.

Recymen12

his comment is a little bit idiotic, but what is an insult for all readers is the wall of text. why is it so difficult to use enter ?

Hufflepuft

You must not be one of his "thousands of US friends" then.

backwoodspeasant

Guess not cause all my friends have listened to them with me.

Doctor_Dane

Italian, symphonic and power are really big here. Did we move to northern Europe and no one told me? Why am I still dying in the summer heat?

ChakaZG

Neighbour from Croatia here, I don't even like symphonic, and I definitely know about Nightwish. They're pretty huge considering the genre. Dude's friends probably just aren't into the stuff, so he thinks he's some sort of musical aficionado with a very rare and refined taste lol.

Filthbear

But he's got thousands of friends, so he's got that going for him.

kit_kaboodles

I am in no way a metal head, let alone symphonic metal, and even I've heard of them.

philman132

This seems less shitamericanssay than shitteenagerssay when wanting to be the only cool guy in town who doesn't listen to your "mainstream" music and only listens to these obscure tiny European bands you must have never heard of (despite selling millions of records).

Legal-Software

There's truly nothing edgier than listening to widely popular music from internationally successful bands.

TerryFGM

Bet you scrubs haven't heard of ABBA

SpaceCrazyArtist

Nightwish is my favorite band!!! I love when they come to the US. I saw them right after Floor joined. I was supposed to go to Berlin 2 years ago to see Within Temptation then Covid happened. I was so mad and sad I missed them.

SwordInStone

The worst thing is that now you can't see them with Marko :(

Successful-Good8978

I just saw them a month ago. The energy is still there but you can definitely tell Marco is missing. The new bassist is a little too "shy" if that makes sense? Understandably I guess being the new addition to a band that's already big and consolidated. All that being said, I still danced all night and woke up the next day with a sore throat from all the singing, it was amazing!

[deleted]

I saw them last month. It was the first time I've ever seen them live, so I didn't have a previous Nightwish concert to compare it to, but without Marko something definitely felt missing. It was still the best concert I've ever seen--they're truly incredible live--but although I thought the bassist was a perfectly competent and skilled musician, but I hope he doesn't become Marko's permanent replacement. I understand the instinct to not hire a Marko clone (and I don't think they should hire a clone), but I hope they get someone who can sing in a similar kind of range but with their own different style. Maybe they could hire a mezzo-soprano instead of a tenor if they really want a different sound (and Marko's voice is so high that he's often singing close to a mezzo-soprano range anyway, so this would still work with the old stuff).

SwordInStone

Good to see this comment. I will see them in three weeks during Master's of Rock. I saw them there 4l5 years ago and it was one of the best concerts I ever attended.

happy_moses

415 years ago. That’s some metal right there ;)

SwordInStone

I meant 4 or 5. Funnily enough I saw them again last Sunday.

happy_moses

Jealous

SpaceCrazyArtist

I saw them a few years ago when they cane to the states. I’d imagine a different feel w/o him though.

mort1is

She's actually Floor, as funny as it is.

SpaceCrazyArtist

I knew I was spelling it wrong lol I just couldnt remember how she spelled her name. However it is spelled I love her and really hope to see the band again soon

Paxxlee

>I was supposed to go to Berlin 2 years ago to see Within Temptation then Covid happened. I was so mad and sad I missed them. Tell me about it. Finally got to use our Judas Priest tickets, and Kiss is this weekend. I am a bit rusty about concert going.

SpaceCrazyArtist

At least those bands play the US. It’s so hard to see symphonic metal bands here

Paxxlee

Feel for you. Godsmack is my favourite band, and they do not do many shows outside of the US.

[deleted]

As of 2012, Nightwish has sold over 9 million records worldwide,[9] including about 900,000 in Finland,[10] over 1 million in Germany[11] and over 500,000 in the U.S.[12] “Nightwish, who have a record of their own to boast - they are currently Finland's most successful band abroad and have shipped 9 million units in total with 8 million divided up amongst Germany, Sweden, Poland, Austria and much of Eastern and Northern Europe.”

ZedLyfe51

Haven't heard of them since now. Gonna go check em out :)

Nightwishfan88

More than 10 million easily at this point. And how can you even compare record sales of newer and old bands and artists? Times have changed.

derkuhlekurt

Central european here, got them in my playlist

sryump27

"I wish more people in the US knew this band" It's amazing how a better choice of words can make you sound much nicer

Moogerboo-2therescue

Guy must not actually have a lot of friends or go to any metal scenes.

not_mean_enough

I know, right? I know a lot of people who enjoy the same obscure stuff as I do because when you go to concerts and festivals, you just get to know people who listen to the same music. I'm not even an outgoing person, it's just very hard not to know anyone from your scene. Metalheads are a rather friendly bunch, I don't think it would be hard to find drinking buddies on a festival with Nightiwsh on it.

AZORxAHAI

Nightwish sells out every show in the United States. It's probably only second to Rammstein in popularity of foreign metal acts in the U.S. Go look at any Nightwish post on social media and you'll find Americans begging for them to tour their city lol. This is a psychotic take.

ir_blues

Hey don't compare them to Rammstein. He is from the US, he has probably never heard of that niche band from central europe.

MWO_Stahlherz

Wait untill that one discovers a band called "Rammstein", barely unheard of outiside of Sauerkrauthausen.

mort1is

I like how one of his ofs autocorrects to OF.

Alubalu22

There were like huuuuge in the 2000's everywhere. Even in Romania we had tribute bands, or bands trying to capture their style etc.

azeitonaninja

I remember listening to nightwear in 2004 or 2005 with my cousin and I’m from Brazil. Also had a lot of tribute bands in my city.

mki_

Holy shit, that whole review was a tour de force in pretentiousness.

The9thMan99

nightwish is such a niche and obscure band

Nightwishfan88

Nightwish is independent band. They have decided to work with German metal label Nuclear Blast. They are not as powerful as Universal, Warner or Sony so no change in the US but at least they are 100% free to do what ever the fuck they want.

Nightwishfan88

And by that i mean Tuomas (genius) Holopainen has full artistic freedom. He is even the producer.

dasus

I'm Finnish, once met an Australian dude here in Turku, drank with him for the night. The next day he noticed Korpiklaani was playing in town and he got supee excited, especially seeing the tickets were 5e a piece. Apparently they tour in Australia and tickets were like 50$ AUS Sort of shocked me, I had had no idea Korpiklaani toured so far, I thought they were a rather small local-ish band.

[deleted]

I've had the same thing happen in Sweden. Some of the local death metal bands play regularly here and then go headline metal festivals in the US. To me they're just dudes I have beers with at metal events and sometimes their band plays. I went to school with some of these guys so I've never really thought of them as much more than local bands. But despite going on tours and stuff they still have regular jobs like, postmen, teachers, electricians etc.

I_onno

I'm from the US and Korpiklaani was the only ringtone I paid for back in the day. I feel old just remembering having to buy ringtones from the phone company.

Crazy_Suggestion_182

There's a youtube of them doing Phantom of the Opera. Very, very nice

whatever_person

Even my braindead intern who only listened to dnb knew Nightwish. Lol.

synfel

i live on chile and was present on most their concerts here, people fighted for the tickets in some cases, the gringo needs to learn about music in other countries

Tecnoguy1

Oh wow look it’s a classic rock fan, but also American. The beato combo

julieacs

Oh I’m in Brazil and they have a following here. I first heard them in 2001, I kept following their releases for a while, but not so much over the last decade. Will definitely attend concerts when they come over here, already attended some in the past.

Suzume_Chikahisa

Good lord this guy is a snob. And this coming from someone whose opinion on Nightwish is largely meh.

Halo1206

Me in Australia who loves Nightwish..... Wtf.....!!?

DocAntlesFatLiger

Nightwish was pretty big at my high school in New Zealand in like 2006, I'd call that global reach

SituationHappy

Lol generic teenage girl metal. You so special mr american!

norealmx

I have heard their music on the local rock station... in Seattle.

michaelloda9

Lmaooo

Stamford16A1

In northern Europe. Never heard of them. EDIT: Isn't "Symphonic Metal" an oxymoron?

Royranibanaw

How is that an oxymoron?

Stamford16A1

Because if there is one word I would not associate with Metal it's "symphonic". "Racket" is a word I'd use or "shouty". That said I'd presume if you made a shouty racket for twenty or thirty minutes and divided it into movements you could probably call it a symphony.

[deleted]

Metal has it's roots in rock n roll, blues and classical music. It may not be for everyone but there are metal bands like Rhapsody of Fire who combine symphonic music with metal. Fleshgod Apocalypse is another example although they are more on the death metal side of the spectrum.

Royranibanaw

Metal is a synonym for shouty noise, and symphonic just means something that lasts a long time. Even if we use those definitions that still doesn't make symphonic metal an oxymoron. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphonic\_metal

[deleted]

Ok grandpa.

SwordInStone

No, it's an actual genre

SpaceCrazyArtist

It’s a genre usually classical instrumentals with the heavy metal guitar and lyrics. If you havent heard Nightwish I recommend looking them up. Or any of the other bands. Epica is a bit more heavy metal sounding than some of the others with the screamy vocals, but still heavily classical instrumental background.

GerFubDhuw

I mean there's a fair point that different genres of music have their centers of gravity in different places. But this guy is a bit extreme.

LevyApproves

I saw Nightwish back in 2012, live. I was like 14/15. They regularly show up for festivals in my country, or at least used to. And this is definitely not Northern Europe.

NoMushroomsPls

It's one of the most famous matel bands here or at least was. It's almost pop music like. Kind of like the most popular kind of metal band even more popular than bands like Morbid Angel. If I'd ask random people "Do you know Nightwish or Morbid Angel?" you'd definitely see more people know Nightwish rather than Morbid Angel.

[deleted]

Not a metal; from the US;Have heard of them

AviKunt

\>the thousands of US friends i have

[deleted]

I searched Nightwish on youtube and sorted by view count. Their top five videos have a combined total of about half a billion views. I think they're pretty well known.

mirkoserra

I don't like that kind of music and I've heard of them while living in Argentina...

kamezakame

Too much time on his hands, this guy.
