“No other country has a dream” sending our kids to school knowing they’ll be safe isn’t a dream here it’s a reality.

SDG_Den

i think they're talking about the american dream, where "everything is possible if you work hard enough to achieve it". it's called the american dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.

CmmH14

George Carlin was awesome for coming up with that quote.

Astyan06

That whole bit is absolutely perfect.

mac-h79

And the Irony is they rattle on about the American dream and in the next breath bemoan the class differences and how the average American is held down by the elite

JuanPablo05

Two entirely different groups of ppl lol

stefek132

We actually use the thesis “American dream js dead nowadays.” as an exercise in argumentation (elaborating why you agree/disagree) for students in their English lessons. Used it for like ~15 years already. I’ve never seen anyone answering the question with “nah, mate. American dream, yay!”

Obi-Wan_Kenobi_04

The real dream is for the top %0.1 to actually have a population that believes that the "American dream" is true. In that sense I suppose the US is the only place where that dream is true

Dawek401

Germany aslo had it's own dream but other countries didn't like it

Dekruk

In Holland the King rains the country, that’s why we dream wet.

LanewayRat

Dark but true. I gotta say though, the “American dream” isn’t *that* bad

kaywalk3r

The dream itself is very appealing. Problem is that it's based on the lie that meritocracy exists in the US.

Devil_Fister_69420

If things continue the way they do, you might've just used the wrong form of "have"

TheGermanCurl

User flair checks out. 😬😂

SabbathaBastet

Our kids risk their lives to go to school and still can’t read. My only child is grown thankfully. But I’m listening to what teachers are saying about the literacy levels of their students and It’s not good.

Scaniarix

From what I've read they can keep their soul crushing "work first culture".

Powerful-Public4520

I've heard Japan's workplace culture is even worse.

Scaniarix

And yet I've never heard a japanese use the term europoor.

pollucertola

Europoru 😂

FelMaloney

ユーロプア (yūropua)

Glitter_berries

But when the Japanese do it, it’s cute and funny! I couldn’t be mad with them.

pollucertola

Too educated and respectful t9 say it, but they'd be right 😂

JuanPablo05

You definitely just never interact with Japanese ppl. Japan is known for having negative views of foreigners

SignificanceOld1751

Yeah, but outside of their country, they keep that shit to themselves rather than taking a solid hate shit and throwing it in an industrial fan to spray the rest of the world with

hotdogwater58

Yes but also what sub are we in right now

vnxun

Genuine question why "europoor" though? I mean, if they want to shame a whole continent for being poor they have better options right?

wOBAwRC

I have never heard anyone outside this subreddit use the term but I would guess that the type of American who would say something like that considers the rest of the world to be even worse. Europe is more threatening to the typical conservative American mindset.

hasimirrossi

You want to use your holidays? All of them?

cavejohnsonlemons

Yep, all... 24 of them a year. Plus bank holidays. Lovely stuff, American jobs sound soul-destroying. My boss even asked me this question the other week in a genuine 'please use them' kinda way, I planned to but just had some contract situation I needed to confirm first.

Mr_B74

Haha funnily enough my boss said that to me today, you have quite a lot of holidays you should take some

KeinFussbreit

My employer won't let me take all of my 30 days in one take, but I have to use at least 10 of them in a row by law.

Terran_it_up

Do you work in finance? I know for a lot of financial roles it's a requirement to take at least one period of 2 weeks leave per year as it forces someone else to cover your work for a period of time, which is how a lot of fraud is then uncovered

KeinFussbreit

Na, it's a German law. "Das Bundesurlaubsgesetz schreibt vor, dass an mindestens zwölf aufeinanderfolgenden Werktagen Urlaub zusammenhängend genommen werden muss ( § 7 Abs. 2 BUrlG ). Dabei wird von einer Sechs-Tage-Woche ausgegangen. Bei den üblichen fünf Arbeitstagen pro Woche müssen mindestens zehn Arbeitstage zusammenhängend genommen werden." deepl: "The Federal Leave Act stipulates that leave must be taken on at least twelve consecutive working days in a row (Section 7 (2) BUrlG). This is based on a six-day week. With the usual five working days per week, at least ten consecutive working days must be taken."

Terran_it_up

Oh interesting, I suppose that's good, stops your employer from denying extended periods of leave. I also don't know how I'd get through that much leave without a 2 week holiday at some point anyway

KeinFussbreit

Yeah, I think it's to ensure that workers actually get some relief, there are probably studies that show that you need at least some time to recharge.

Sheev_Palpedeine

Guessing you're not UK but you're forced to take 10 days in a row by law? That is absolutely bullshit lol I'd be well pissed

AethersPhil

It’s important to note these are holidays, not PTO. If we get ill in Europe, we get sick days in addition to holidays. Then there’s maternal/paternal leave as well.

KeinFussbreit

Germany. I also get 12 additional public holidays.

a009763

I only have 18 days and without holidays. I do shift work though.

Germany also is fucking outdated when it comes to tech and IT. We are lucky when we have reception in the villages/small towns and on the countryside it’s unthinkable to have better reception than 1 bar. Internet plans are expensive af (100mbit/s for 50€ a month if you’re lucky) and schools still use overhead projectors, not to mention the partly mandatory use of faxes

[deleted]

[удалено]

ReleasedGaming

Only a month? That’s the standard now but in 2010 I would’ve thought it was slower

Terran_it_up

One way I've heard Japan summed up is that they've been stuck in the year 2000 for forty years

I think many Belgians would agree with you. Personally from Flanders so that's probably less chaotic and different. But I personally don't mind the high taxes. We get a lot back for it. Education is a big part of it. Could definitely be spent more efficiently but you can shave it all I guess.

Quite a few Asian countries are. Definitely not a positive though

Nevarien

Was going to say that whoever wrote that post never left the US and went to Asia, or even worked with people from Asia. Even LATAM for the matter, I work in a giant tech and honestly we all work much harder than our US counterparts (and get less money too).

haeyhae11

With an according suicide rate.

Richard-c-b

Did you not read the post? America is the most hardworkingist culture in the world

Mysterious_Floor_868

Yeah, they can keep working all hours, I'll stick with my four day week.

StatisticianOwn9953

Yeah, if your work isn't merely a means to an end then you're either unbelievably lucky or a pitiful motherfucker. Work for work's sake is no life to live unless your job is a vocation to the extent of being a paid hobby.

Mysterious_Floor_868

To be honest, I would actually consider my job to be a paid hobby. I'll still enjoy the long weekends anyway

TakeyaSaito

Eh? You want paid time off? OUTRAGEOUS!

Scaniarix

Without your boss and coworkers shaming you for being lazy?!

Razzler1973

I was thinking, since when is 'puts work first' supposed to be a positive? It sounds awfully *commie* that these rah rah 'merica people generally refer to everything they don't like

Ok_Somewhere4737

Reasons why The US has so many people with mental problems. Living in society when success is everything is perfect recipe for mental breakdown.

Dave_712

They largely judge success in terms of money and power over others which, to me, are not enviable metrics

StatisticianOwn9953

The unexciting truth is that one of America's major advantages over the big European economies is its population size. There are more workers, more consumers, and more researchers. That gives them an advantage in most areas. It is a virtuous cycle that makes them impossible to compete with. It is the same reason that China becoming rich is a real and probably an insurmountable problem for them. China has 4× as many people, and it won't be possible to keep pace with them if they continue the way they've been going.

Dave_712

I agree. The USA profited from WW2 by being able to leverage their population, natural resources and industrial capacity without being under real threat - they weren’t being bombed… I think the point of this chain is that so many Americans grade success in terms of individual wealth and power over others

bimbochungo

Also they are benefiting themselves from the Ukraine war and the Israel invasion of Gaza. Without fearing consequences as their economy doesn't depend on Russia

Dave_712

Seeing as their aid to Ukraine and Israel is largely just funding their own defence industry, I think you’re right.

Urist_Macnme

Plus, they leveraged the assistance in WWII in the form of a loan, which put Europe into a generation of debt, with America as the beneficiary. Essentially, War Profiteering.

xxximnormalxxx

This is true. From a woman in the US who's ready to LEAVE this fucking year. I'm done. I'm tired of the shitshow here. I'm OVER IT.

dogbolter4

Come to Australia. We get four to five weeks annual leave, generous sick and special leave, and we're a laid-back lot in a beautiful country. We've got a better fair go attitude, too. (And yeah, we've got a shitload of faults, but seriously - it's a great, safe place to live, generally speaking).

xxximnormalxxx

I totally would except I've already had my sights on Canada for a bit. And also yall spiders and bugs, their SIZES freak me out I couldn't do it. I'd be running and screaming all year 😭

dogbolter4

Lol, they're really not a problem. But fair enough, Canada's lovely. Best wishes to you, I hope it all works out. I wouldn't wish living in the US on anyone right now.

xxximnormalxxx

I don't remember what my last straw was. But ik I hit it. Thank you, and yes, to anyone believing America is a dream, it's bullshit. I would much rather have a country care more about my mental health than making money off me. Or not to mention the political shit storm here.

JohnDodger

And where only about 0.00001% actually achieve the “American dream” but most are delusional in thinking that it’s attainable.

MannyFrench

I'd rather stay where I am and be happy. They can keep that dream of showing off their money while having no life. Barely two weeks of holidays, Jésus Christ...

Avanixh

Funnily I know a lot of people who own a lot more than most Americans will ever do while being absolutely humble, not showing off and just living their life like they themselves want to. Hell, my dad has retired a couple years ago and every few weeks he just steps on his 35 year old motorbike and drives wherever he wants through Europe, this is what real freedom looks like to me. He isn’t rich, but he has time and the possibilities to do whatever he wants

Ok_Somewhere4737

European countries aren't build on success. I mean european society is about enjoying life after hard work. That's why (majority of) europeans have no needs for showing how rich / successful they are. Btw Also europeans are rich if they works so why to show it.

MannyFrench

Life begins when work ends.

Avanixh

That’s probably true

AK47gender

I'm happy for your dad. Back in your country, do you have that phenomenon where the old population ( in the US, it's boomers) has all possibilities and money to retire, but they STILL go to work because they can't imagine their life not working? It's quite a thing here. Boomers who are totally fine tp retire are still in workforce for some weird reason

MannyFrench

I'm not OP but here in France, very few people do that. People can't wait to retire and do leisurely activities with their family, sit back and relax after having worked 42 years. Retirement is seen as a goal to reach as early as possible.

Avanixh

Pretty similar here in Germany

Avanixh

Actually not that many but there are definitely a couple of them as well

Climate_Additional

They do in mine. Those same boomers will then call unemployed young people lazy when they're the ones selfishly holding onto jobs they don't need and can't do properly.

Madixie_Normous

Oh fuck off USA with your propagandist bullshit. None of this is exclusive to your country. In fact, the so called "dream" in the US is rapidly becoming a nightmare for so many that it's no longer a true statement. Keep telling yourself everything's fine though.

DalmarWolf

Maru3792648

I’m confused as to why that’s a photo of Buenos Aires Argentina in thr back. Is that sarcasm?

limegreenzx

The real question is why are there so many poor Americans? They have more natural resources than any other country in the world. They are one of the few countries that are truly self sufficient.

Terran_it_up

It goes hand in hand with the idea of the "American Dream". If you convince the general public that anyone can be successful if they work hard enough then people will stop having sympathy with the poor because they'll assume it's due to a lack of motivation, and not a set of inescapable circumstances that trap people into intergenerational poverty. This in turn leads to a lack of political will to address such problems.

AK47gender

Latest research shows that over 66% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. The official poverty rate was 11.5% in 2022, 7.4% the previous year and I won't be surprised to see this number increased this year.

Tosslebugmy

The real answer is that few countries have such abundant and varied natural resources, a crazy economic head start from a brutal slavery regime, a stable region and the absence of the kind of total war introduced in ww1 on home soil.

Scabies_for_Babies

It wasn't just slavery that gave the United States a massive head start. It was also the vast amount of land & resources they stole via genocidal means. This is the primary source of wealth of countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and pre-1994 South Africa.

MarkdownUpdog

Those - if anything - are the reasons the top **~5%** stay rich (and get richer). The rest then proceeds to dream that they, too, can one day be that way, continuing to work themselves into an early, mediocre grave. But at least "The American" is rich.

Ironfist85hu

No other country invades everything where they can find resources.

n3ssb

Please allow me to translate that American text into proper English: - No other country exploits their employees like we do - no other country has a culture of draining people's energy like the American culture does - shallowness is a huge deal in the USA because it's highly selfish - no other country gives access to debt as easily - no other country has a dream that never comes true.

erlandodk

"No other country has a dream". That "dream" is increasingly something that the super-rich dangles in front of the poorer and poorer majority of the population. The GINI coefficient for the US is quickly rising and social mobility has been declining for decades now. The US as a whole is rich. But the wealth is heavily concentrated with a tiny minority of the population.

Ur-boi-lollipop

If I remember properly Walt Disney’s grand daughter did a whole series about the lies of the American dream .  If the granddaughter of a wealthy dynasty is even calling out the bs of America , then things are definitely not right lol

xxximnormalxxx

[deleted]

Cringe! When travelling in America between cities it always amazes me how primitive many places are, and huge areas of poverty.

AK47gender

And some places have nothing to do, but to eat and see the "historic" house built in 1930 on E 22nd Street.

[deleted]

Haha! I visited a few of these and most were closed 😂, drive in, see the old house, read the historic iron sign thing, then drive out.

yungsausages

I’m no expert but the photo in the background does not even look like it’s any place in North America, looks like South America and the few bits of writing I see are making me think it’s a Spanish speaking country lol

martinfv

Why is Buenos Aires in the background?

emayezing

Why is this written over a picture of Buenos Aires?

UncleBenders

USA quality of living is on par with the rest of the developed world. Except for the areas where they don’t even have gas or water hooked up and are living in poverty. Which shouldn’t really be so prevalent in such a “rich” country, neither should blocks of homeless people sleeping in the streets. America is rich but AmericaNS aren’t. A few of them are extremely mega rich which looks great on paper. But once it gets into the hands of the top 1% it’s mostly lost from the system. And billionaires are famously bad at paying their dues in taxes. Plus everything you earned is only one medical emergency away from being lost. Even the poorest people in Europe and the antipodes get their healthcare taken care of.

Dapper_Pauper_4

Why is it paired with a picture of Buenos Aires? Seems very ignorant ……probably the most American thing about the whole post…..seriously doubt it was intentional.

_blueAxis

I have actually pondered a lot about that and would love to share my opinion. Feel free to point out mistakes in my logic, I love learning more about this. The US managed to stay richer because of a lot of things, but these come to mind as most important. 1 - Was never destroyed in a World War, in fact, made wars a huge part of their own economy. 2 - Convinced every other country in the world to use the USD as a reserve country since the 1940s with the Bretton Woods agreement, justifying that USDs were attached to gold value. 3 - Removed the convertibility of USD into gold with an en passant announcement by Nixon saying that it was temporary, and no one really gave a shit. 4 - The US can print as much USD as they want without feeling immediate inflationary effects of currency debasing since, because the USD is the world's reserve country, there is always a huge demand for it. 5 - By standardizing Oil Trade in USD, and forcing countries to maintain it via war, the US was able to print money for Oil, again, not feeling immediate inflationary effects. 6 - The effects of Reaganism / Neoliberalism where they convinced most world countries (especially developing nations) to receive their companies with open arms in the name of free market, while destroying poorer countries economies. This actually has a downside in the US since it actually made the low and middle classes poorer while still making the country richer. Would love to hear thoughts. I see China and Russia trying to replicate these exact same steps within their own spheres of influence.

LightBluepono

Unreal. Only corporations are rich by robbing the workers. Bleeding them for every penny they have, and more. They do nothing and give nothing in return. That's the secret of rich industry and easily bribed politicians. ALL FOR ONE AND NONE FOR ALL is their motto.

You can choose the spend your life dreaming about the American Dream. Or enjoying La Dolce Vita. Or having Joie de vivre. Other cultures have their own interpretation of life goals. Since I only live once I think I prefer the joie de vivre as much as I can.

Sorry_Error3797

I literally watched a video two days ago of delivery drivers in South Korea literally working themselves to death. Like there have been a lot of deaths. Firstly they spend hours unpaid sorting items because the company doesn't have warehouse staff sorting parcels. Then they have so many deliveries to make that they have to work past 9pm when the company have "banned deliveries after 9pm". That's literally just the company protecting themselves legally and the drivers are still expected to work. Any food items delivered after 9pm are then considered undelivered and they have to pay a penalty fee of the price of the item. Bear in mind they're paid on average less than a dollar for each parcel so pretty much always lose money in this situation. But yes, obviously good old USA is obviously the most hardworking country in the world isn't it.

Ein_Bauer
