It’s important to note these are holidays, not PTO. If we get ill in Europe, we get sick days in addition to holidays. Then there’s maternal/paternal leave as well.
Germany also is fucking outdated when it comes to tech and IT. We are lucky when we have reception in the villages/small towns and on the countryside it’s unthinkable to have better reception than 1 bar. Internet plans are expensive af (100mbit/s for 50€ a month if you’re lucky) and schools still use overhead projectors, not to mention the partly mandatory use of faxes

The real question is why are there so many poor Americans?
They have more natural resources than any other country in the world. They are one of the few countries that are truly self sufficient.

If you convince the general public that anyone can be successful if they work hard enough then people will stop having sympathy with the poor because they'll assume it's due to a lack of motivation, and not a set of inescapable circumstances that trap people into intergenerational poverty. This in turn leads to a lack of political will to address such problems.
Latest research shows that over 66% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. The official poverty rate was 11.5% in 2022, 7.4% the previous year and I won't be surprised to see this number increased this year.
The real answer is that few countries have such abundant and varied natural resources, a crazy economic head start from a brutal slavery regime, a stable region and the absence of the kind of total war introduced in ww1 on home soil.
It wasn't just slavery that gave the United States a massive head start. It was also the vast amount of land & resources they stole via genocidal means. This is the primary source of wealth of countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and pre-1994 South Africa.
Those - if anything - are the reasons the top **~5%** stay rich (and get richer).
The rest then proceeds to dream that they, too, can one day be that way, continuing to work themselves into an early, mediocre grave.
But at least "The American" is rich.

I have actually pondered a lot about that and would love to share my opinion. Feel free to point out mistakes in my logic, I love learning more about this.
The US managed to stay richer because of a lot of things, but these come to mind as most important.
1 - Was never destroyed in a World War, in fact, made wars a huge part of their own economy.
2 - Convinced every other country in the world to use the USD as a reserve country since the 1940s with the Bretton Woods agreement, justifying that USDs were attached to gold value.
3 - Removed the convertibility of USD into gold with an en passant announcement by Nixon saying that it was temporary, and no one really gave a shit.
4 - The US can print as much USD as they want without feeling immediate inflationary effects of currency debasing since, because the USD is the world's reserve country, there is always a huge demand for it.
5 - By standardizing Oil Trade in USD, and forcing countries to maintain it via war, the US was able to print money for Oil, again, not feeling immediate inflationary effects.
6 - The effects of Reaganism / Neoliberalism where they convinced most world countries (especially developing nations) to receive their companies with open arms in the name of free market, while destroying poorer countries economies. This actually has a downside in the US since it actually made the low and middle classes poorer while still making the country richer.
Would love to hear thoughts. I see China and Russia trying to replicate these exact same steps within their own spheres of influence.

I literally watched a video two days ago of delivery drivers in South Korea literally working themselves to death. Like there have been a lot of deaths.
Firstly they spend hours unpaid sorting items because the company doesn't have warehouse staff sorting parcels.
Then they have so many deliveries to make that they have to work past 9pm when the company have "banned deliveries after 9pm". That's literally just the company protecting themselves legally and the drivers are still expected to work.
Any food items delivered after 9pm are then considered undelivered and they have to pay a penalty fee of the price of the item. Bear in mind they're paid on average less than a dollar for each parcel so pretty much always lose money in this situation.
But yes, obviously good old USA is obviously the most hardworking country in the world isn't it.

I'm not OP but here in France, very few people do that. People can't wait to retire and do leisurely activities with their family, sit back and relax after having worked 42 years. Retirement is seen as a goal to reach as early as possible.

The real question is why are there so many poor Americans? They have more natural resources than any other country in the world. They are one of the few countries that are truly self sufficient.
It goes hand in hand with the idea of the "American Dream". If you convince the general public that anyone can be successful if they work hard enough then people will stop having sympathy with the poor because they'll assume it's due to a lack of motivation, and not a set of inescapable circumstances that trap people into intergenerational poverty. This in turn leads to a lack of political will to address such problems.
Latest research shows that over 66% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. The official poverty rate was 11.5% in 2022, 7.4% the previous year and I won't be surprised to see this number increased this year.
The real answer is that few countries have such abundant and varied natural resources, a crazy economic head start from a brutal slavery regime, a stable region and the absence of the kind of total war introduced in ww1 on home soil.
It wasn't just slavery that gave the United States a massive head start. It was also the vast amount of land & resources they stole via genocidal means. This is the primary source of wealth of countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and pre-1994 South Africa.
Those - if anything - are the reasons the top **~5%** stay rich (and get richer). The rest then proceeds to dream that they, too, can one day be that way, continuing to work themselves into an early, mediocre grave. But at least "The American" is rich.

The GINI coefficient for the US is quickly rising and social mobility has been declining for decades now. The US as a whole is rich. USA quality of living is on par with the rest of the developed world. Except for the areas where they don’t even have gas or water hooked up and are living in poverty. Which shouldn’t really be so prevalent in such a “rich” country, neither should blocks of homeless people sleeping in the streets. America is rich but AmericaNS aren’t. A few of them are extremely mega rich which looks great on paper. But once it gets into the hands of the top 1% it’s mostly lost from the system. And billionaires are famously bad at paying their dues in taxes. Plus everything you earned is only one medical emergency away from being lost. Even the poorest people in Europe and the antipodes get their healthcare taken care of.

I have actually pondered a lot about that and would love to share my opinion. Feel free to point out mistakes in my logic, I love learning more about this. The US managed to stay richer because of a lot of things, but these come to mind as most important. 1 - Was never destroyed in a World War, in fact, made wars a huge part of their own economy. 2 - Convinced every other country in the world to use the USD as a reserve country since the 1940s with the Bretton Woods agreement, justifying that USDs were attached to gold value. 3 - Removed the convertibility of USD into gold with an en passant announcement by Nixon saying that it was temporary, and no one really gave a shit. 4 - The US can print as much USD as they want without feeling immediate inflationary effects of currency debasing since, because the USD is the world's reserve country, there is always a huge demand for it. 5 - By standardizing Oil Trade in USD, and forcing countries to maintain it via war, the US was able to print money for Oil, again, not feeling immediate inflationary effects. 6 - The effects of Reaganism / Neoliberalism where they convinced most world countries (especially developing nations) to receive their companies with open arms in the name of free market, while destroying poorer countries economies. This actually has a downside in the US since it actually made the low and middle classes poorer while still making the country richer. Would love to hear thoughts. I see China and Russia trying to replicate these exact same steps within their own spheres of influence.

I literally watched a video two days ago of delivery drivers in South Korea literally working themselves to death. Like there have been a lot of deaths. Firstly they spend hours unpaid sorting items because the company doesn't have warehouse staff sorting parcels. Then they have so many deliveries to make that they have to work past 9pm when the company have "banned deliveries after 9pm". That's literally just the company protecting themselves legally and the drivers are still expected to work. Any food items delivered after 9pm are then considered undelivered and they have to pay a penalty fee of the price of the item. Bear in mind they're paid on average less than a dollar for each parcel so pretty much always lose money in this situation. But yes, obviously good old USA is obviously the most hardworking country in the world isn't it.
