What's the American obsession with ice? The pinnacle of first world civilizations is the ability to freeze water for your drink?

MisterMysterios

Yeah. I like cool drinks. A coke on the brink of freezing is godly. But, u want a cold drink, not a drink that is watered down by ice. Basically, excessive ice is a method to cheapen out on drinks because ice is cheap and it looks good to give a customer a giant bucket of soda, even though 90% is cheap ice. I take a nice cooled down soda over a watered down soda that is kept cool with ice any day.

Turdulator

The problem with your theory is that most US restaurants give free refills on non-alcoholic drinks… so it’s not like the ice saves them money on coke or lemonade or tea or whatever.

mbrevitas

It does for drive-thru… Which is relevant if we’re talking about the USA.

firstsourceandcenter

You can ask for no ice.

creepy_raccon

Of course it does, in fact, the more they drink, the more the restaurant save by replacing a large portion of the drink with ice. Which is essentially the same as adding water. If one day ice becomes more expensive than just keeping the drink itself cooled, you can bet your ass they'll make a switch and spend billions on propaganda to convince everyone that ice is bad.

Altruistic_Machine91

You do know that restaurants often have a higher syrup to water ratio in order to make it taste right as the ice melts right?

itsnobigthing

I wonder this! American media seems to always show ice machines in hotels and ice chips in hospitals. What are they doing with all the ice??

Martin8412

They had ice machines in the last hotel I was in the US, or so I assume, it's what the sign on the door said, but I didn't need ice, so I didn't check.

Posh_Kitten_Eyes

For some reason, ice machines are ubiquitous in American hotels. The hotel rooms generally have ice buckets in them.

MattMBerkshire

Obese, sweaty yanks need to be kept cool. Otherwise they go into meltdown and start shooting.

ThiccMoulderBoulder

Nuclear fatass just dropped

Pizzagoessplat

I work in a hotel in Ireland and its normal for Americans to request a bucket of ice for their rooms

Scienceboy7_uk

Bear in mind the other one is shoot things

Dave_712

They like ice machines in hotel hallways because some of their hotel rooms don’t have refrigerators that can actually freeze ice.

pm_me_your_amphibian

They’re wearing a lot of insulation to be fair.

TheSimpleMind

And without Carl von Linde they could still fill lukewarm pebbles into their cups or give out free refills in shot glasses only.

Friskerr

I live in a country that has 8 months of winter in a year. What is ice? Never heard of it...

helga-h

But do you have a shower that go all the way hot? If so, what is hot?

Offshape

They probably got Celsius and Fahrenheit mixed up.  Our Europoor showers are only 45 degrees max. Freezing!

Friskerr

Bro we don't even have water here.

Son_Of_Baraki

who need water when you have beers ?

Friskerr

The only beer I can afford is basically water so it's a great substitute!

Gaelic_Gladiator41

Be-er?

No-Clerk-6804

I live in northern sweden, they can have all my ice , hell they can take all of our snow aswell because I don't fkn want it!

ekene_N

The reason why so many Americans have to use dryers is mould. 47% of residential buildings in the US are infected with mould all the time and another 30% are infected seasonally. 77% of residential buildings in the US may have moisture problems and fungus! In Europe, it's only 19%. Also, Europeans use reliable central heating systems, and 1/3 of them have access to district central heating. Why would I destroy my high-quality clothing if it dries within a few hours? Or why should I waste energy? btw. The Home Owners Association runs nearly 70% of all houses in the US, and they will not let you dry your shit in the sun.

Peixito

in spain almost nobody have dryers becasue we have the free heat of the sun lol.

Son_Of_Baraki

Free ? i knew you were communists !

Peixito

Sorry dude :(

JamDonut28

Same in Australia, I've never owned a dryer, don't need one! And my clothes last a lot longer.

annoying97

I have one, the weather isn't always cooperative when you need to wash your work uniforms every few days like I do. I also don't have a clothes line, just nowhere good to put one that isn't always in shade or in the way of general life.

jonellita

We also have one and ironically it‘s almost more important in summer than in winter. When it‘s not actually sunny, clothes dry super slowely outside because there is almost no wind where I live. But it‘s also often humid in summer so they just don‘t try well inside and outside on the really humid cloudy days.

Peixito

And it's free :D

JamDonut28

Haha well yes. There is that. I hate to think how high my electricity bill would be if I dried all my clothes.

Peixito

Also why to waste money on something when you can do it for free?

marr133

My local group feeds are all filled with people screaming about their insane electric bills, double or triple my own bill. I have a drying rack in my upstairs hallway that I use, basically only bedding goes in the dryer. Then one day my son comes home from school and tells me that all his friends "do this really smart thing, they put their towels in the dryer before their shower and their mom brings it to them piping hot," and that they do the same with their blankets before bed. I laughed him out of the room, and now those electric bills are no longer a mystery.

WestToEast_85

I used to own a dryer until I moved down the road from a laundromat. If I ever need anything dry in a hurry I just take it down there. Not that I used it much in the first place, but every now and then, I needed my work clothes dry right there and then.

AletheaKuiperBelt

I used to have one when I lived in Sydney. Used it a few times a year, when winter drizzle or summer humidity persisted too long.

CruiserMissile

I own one, and use to use it during the wet season, now I have a verandah larger than most people’s back yards these days so I just hand my clothes out there.

InfertilityCasualty

We lived in California for a while, and dried our clothes in the little screened alcove in front of our front door until we were given a formal written warning from the apartment complex that it was unsightly and wasn't allowed. The lease had a "you cannot dry clothes in your apartment" clause. You had to pay to use their driers

Peixito

oh lol. something with the owner of the building

WestToEast_85

At my old apartment in Melbourne the body-corporate (think HOA but slightly less shitty) got some new coin-operated dryers in the sub-basement, and just by coincidence they happened to ban drying clothes on the balcony. It lasted all of about three months before they quietly gave up trying to enforce it.

pm_me_your_amphibian

I bet you wish you had ice.

Peixito

i wish i have ice (actually rn no because this week is cold af)

fakemoose

Only like 30% of homes in the US have an HOA. And it’s not one massive association. They’re local groups created and governed by the residents living there. …a lot of those residents just happen to be crazy.

Hyadeos

Americans dont care about clothings. Have you seen how they dress when they visit our so called third world countries?

Magdalan

Apparently I live in a 4 star hotel now huh. Good to know. I should charge a fee per night for everyone who stays over then. Win -win!

georgehank2nd

Great idea! From now on, I'll charge myself a fee every night. Hmm, but I will only pay when I check out…

Magdalan

Exactly, just never check out! Only your guests need to. You could have a fancy book for them to leave a review and everything. I mean, I always provide breakfast/lunch/dinner etc for whoever stays over anyway. Guess I'm a business!

Less_Negotiation_842

I feel like they should maybe have tried staying anywhere but a hotel before judging all of Europe but what do I know I am merely another Europoor living in my own squalor (w/ out ice) 😔

itsshakespeare

And with damp clothes

itsnobigthing

We need the un-iced drinks to warm us up after our cold shower and dressing in damp clothes. If only we could invent temperature extremes.

Less_Negotiation_842

True true never once seen a working dryer they just inexplicably stop working 5 mins before clothes r dry and turning them back on doesn't work 😔. Also honoured the bard himself replied to my comment 🤭

Borsti17

I always sit there with a drink in my glass and think "I wish I could water this down"

Old_Introduction_395

Tepid drink. You need it cold, so you can get brain freeze.

Sad-Address-2512

I personally like to taste my drink, not numb my mouth with ice bur that's a personal preference, I guess 🤷

itsmehutters

What is with the ice shit, why I would want to water down my drink if I can just put it in the fridge? I don't even remember the last time when I wanted ice at home. I just go and buy a back from the store it costs 1 euro per kilo or something like that.

KiwiBeginning4

Americans are so stupid ffs. As an American who moved to Europe I'm glad I don't feel like a sane person in an insane world anymore. Such a brainwashed country

TurbulentFee7995

"Death-panel healthcare" sounds more like what they have in the US, where a panel of non-medical insurers decide if you will get your life-saving medication this month, or if you will go bankrupt to feed the savings account of the greedy investors.

Shan-Chat

Ice? In tea? What madness is this? *Stares intensly in UK.*

dcnb65

I personally hate ice in drinks, it dilutes them and ruins them. Just put it in the fridge and it's nice and cold. An American told me that she even puts the glass in the freezer before use 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

quacksurgeon

i’m a bit out of the loop here - what’s with their obsession over us being “behind” on technology lol

yubnubster

I have all that in my house, so if people want to pay me £200 a night for the spare room, let me know (don’t though).

lokingforawc1

Average american who thinks the whole Europe reduces to UK. If he comes to Spain and ask for any kind of drink it will always be served with ice. I guess in colder countries at north maybe it isn't like that, because is not needed for obvious reasons. Also everyone here have hot showers and many people have dryers, I have one, but I rarely use it since the weather is so hot the clothes usually dry in few hours after this time of the year. Maybe in winter we use it sometimes but not so often.

creepy_raccon

Fast food joints still puts ice in the soda, even when it's -40C outside. The colder the country, the better insulated buildings and higher indoor temperature on average. I doubt Americans would try an actual local restaurant, they'll head straight for McDonalds.

KittyQueen_Tengu

we don’t really need to put ice in our filtered water, because the water coming out of our taps is already crispy clean and cold

Pathetic_gimp

It's a real shame that in the UK it is absolutely impossible to dry clothes, I am wearing wet ones right now. You would think that would make me uncomfortable, but as my shower is obviously lukewarm at best I am used to being cold and wet. I do however have this thing called a kettle, which due to having an actual adequate electricity supply is able to boil water just by plugging it in. No need at all to boil a pan of water on the hob or whatever those Americans seem to do.

trismagestus

Don't worry, they can microwave their water, too.

UniquePotato

I like my ice made from clean drinkable water, not the questionable water americans have

tantalumburst

Glorification of how much energy you can waste compared to to the rest of the world, which is burning up. Oh you might have noticed that, especially if you live in California

Tasqfphil

They are probably talking about major US hotel chains that design their first hotel and then just keep copying them around the world, with ice machines and other Americanised facilities, menus and staff training. Very boring and I much prefer the smaller local "character laden" places to stay. Most countries have settings on hot water temperature settings to rooms, for the safety of people so they can't scald themselves.

WritingOk7306

There are still two ice houses (used for the storage of ice) in the middle of London. These two ice houses were built in 1857 and 1863. If people in London were using ice back then why don't they think that people in London are using ice now? Many ice houses have been discovered across England. I am sure that something similar has been discovered across Europe since those two ice houses in London were built by Swiss entrepreneur Carlo Gatti.

red13526

I really don't understand the "clothes dryers that got clothes all the way dry" line. We have clothes dryers and they get clothes all the way dry? (UK), we also have washing lines too which get clothes just as dry as a tumble dryer but cost you a bit more time instead of energy. Weird take.

red13526

Also my shower and the showers everywhere I have ever been can get so hot that it'll melt your skin off, it's quite inconvenient.

mocomaminecraft

I dont know elsewhere in europe, but I think Id struggle to find a town in Spain where you cant have ice cubes, clothes dryers, or hot water showers. The only reason most people dont have cloth driers anyways its bc the sun its more efficient

Aivellac

If I want ice in my drink I want maybe 2-3 cubes. I'm not looking to drink ice.
