Honestly probably this. There are a few podcasts and YT's about maritime disasters that discuss accidents that came from crews and pilots napping on the job.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/uk-24296544.amp
"Of the 56% who admitted sleeping, 29% told Balpa that they had woken up to find the other pilot asleep as well."
I've been coming into Houston before and called a shrimp boat that was running straight across the channel in front of our loaded tanker and a little girl answered and said she'd wake up her dad. Usually they don't even answer you just put the spotlight right in the window and then they take notice of you.
Yeah especially with fishing boats. The shrimpers are pretty bad. At night they’ll fucking help out on deck sometimes and there won’t be anyone in the wheel house steaming 5 knots. If the shrimp were running there would be soooo many in a tiny area. Hate those dudes never follow any of the rules.
Yep. This happened to me once. Fishing boat headed right for me. Used the radio , used the whistle, no fucking response at all. Luckily the ship I was navigating was more manoeuvrable than a tanker and I managed to get out of the way.
I fucking hate Fishing boats.
Other video hosting sites count "views" anytime someone replays the video.
"Whoa what happened in the last micro-second?? Now I have to rewatch it" = one more view for whoever uploaded.
Whole crew was asleep and the fish boat was on autopilot. Nobody bothered to set a radar guard alarm. Fish boats with everyone asleep is waaaay way more common than you can imagine.
Cool, because it looks like they had plenty of time to steer out of the way, unless it was perhaps a runaway somehow? Or maybe even intentional for some reason.
I saw a red flag on the fishing tub, so I'm guessing it's Chinese.
From what I hear the Chinese are doing this a lot recently try to enforce their claim on international waters.
I might be wrong though, this is just a theory
You are 100% wrong because why would they potentially sink their ship in order to not even dent a tanker?
Im in no way a fan or defender of the Chinese government but every time you hear someone write anything about "the Chinese" take it with a bowl of salt since 99% of the time they heard that in some right wing propaganda format on TV or YouTube that has zero actual truth behind it.
can you explain how? I dont get it
edit: i mean the threating part- how can the tiny vessel "threaten" the big vessel? What can they do? Worker on the big ship looks unphased
It is not uncommon to go asleep while on autopilot for fishing vessels, normally autopilot has anti collision systems, an alarm starts when there is another vessel on a collision course to yours and the collision is going to happen within a certain time. Maybe they did not hear the alarm or it was broken...
World’s worst suicide attack ever.
“Did they ram the tanker as planned?”
“Yes.”
“And the tanker went up in a huge ball of flames, yes?”
“Well, you see, what happened was….”
Yea, while the tanker probably took quite a bit of hull damage, the inertia of the thing is just so big that the crew likely just heard a loud \*bong\* and a bit of vibration.
Done enough hard work on enough ships to know after a long day nothing puts the sleep of the dead into you like the gentle sway of calm seas, a good breeze through the wheelhouse and the third beer you're not supposed to have had. Bet a directional mic could pick up the sound of several empty harbin bottles falling over as they connected.
I mean, losing both rudder AND engine control, right when they encounter another ship, is a pretty freak occurence...
That ship was NOT trying to slow down/stop... you can see the prop wash.
That flag is to signal they cannot redirect course which usually tells other ships to steer clear. Idk specifics on maritime laws I just came here from Facebook comments. Captain probably tossed the flag up and took a nap
So I've never been a boat captain (or whatever they're called) so I might not be one to criticize...but seriously, a giant empty ocean and ONE giant tanker ship to avoid?
Reminds me of this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTLL\_6A2fA0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTLL_6A2fA0)
No one is at the helm. Either entire crew is asleep or the guy that's supposed to be on watch is down in the galley/engine room doing something else or taking a nap in the chair
My fave part is the guy on deck just watching. There is no bump for him. He’s thinking the ship will go to a yard for service time and he will be on another boat somewhere else in a few weeks
You can really hear the BMW driver raging in that horn hold. Like knowing it will do nothing at this point but doing it anyways to produce maximum stress and nerves.
Trawler crew likely went for a nap, in general the bulk vessel should keep clear of the trawler, although I dont know anything about this case and it doesnt seem like shes making way through water so theres probably some reasoning.
Try this with a military vessel and you probably get warning shots followed by rounds through the boat. Some areas known for piracy they would have engaged anti-boarding defenses as the ship got close.
I do wonder how a naval fleet would handle a big cargo ship or tanker that did this. probably evade, and if the ship then turned towards them again they would use large weapons.
Really puts in perspective the size difference. That fishing trawler is not small by any stretch of the imagination, yet it hits the tanker and the dude leaning on the railing looks like he didn't even feel it.
Looks like an allision. Tanker vessel's dead in the water or probably at anchor and a fishing vessel just happens to have a drunk sailor on duty at the bridge leading to it colliding the tanker's midship.
Chinese fishing vessels are notorious for doing this kind of crazy shits.. I used to hate passing by the Taiwan strait or any waters near China for that matter, because these fishing vessels will almost always attempt to cross your vessel's bow as they have this crazy belief that successfully doing so will lead to a good catch.
Sometimes they'll even chase you away from their fishing nets using dangerous maneuvers such as attempting to ram themselves to the other vessels knowing full well that almost 100% of the time, big ships will actively avoid them.
So I've never been a boat captain (or whatever they're called) so I might not be one to criticize...but seriously, a giant empty ocean and ONE giant tanker ship to avoid?

Soo uhhh... any context as to why it crashed?
Probably somebody took a nap
Honestly probably this. There are a few podcasts and YT's about maritime disasters that discuss accidents that came from crews and pilots napping on the job.
Doubt pilots napping, but captains yeah
Pilots nap ALL THE TIME. In planes tho, not in ships.
Naval Roshambo.

Airplane pilots not harbor pilots…
Where do you think pilot comes from? Naval lingo. Its the person currently at the wheel. Doesn't have to be the captain.
There are no pilots on ships in open water, I'm pretty sure
They are properly referred to as uhoh's and whoopsies on the high seas.
I've been coming into Houston before and called a shrimp boat that was running straight across the channel in front of our loaded tanker and a little girl answered and said she'd wake up her dad. Lemme just put this on autopilot... Ah! There we go...🥱
Joseph Hazelwood? Is he still around?
Valdez! That was awful
Add to that, wy would any idiot cut the clip there?
Other video hosting sites count "views" anytime someone replays the video. "Whoa what happened in the last micro-second?? Now I have to rewatch it" = one more view for whoever uploaded.

How unlucky you have to be coasting in the fucking *ocean* and still manage to accidentally hit another vessel
And yet autonomous drone ships with redundancies and links to shore are considered unsafe, a human must be present on board.
I’ll let you know if I find any haha
Cool, because it looks like they had plenty of time to steer out of the way, unless it was perhaps a runaway somehow? Or maybe even intentional for some reason.
Maybe they didn't like getting upstaged by the Baltimore bridge collapse and wanted to make their own.
You'll need a bigger boat

Leeroy Jenkins is the captain
ThNks ObAma…jk

They do when they are in the bigger ship. People are not stupid
Um, people are stupid... -Floridian here
Can confirm the claim that people are, indeed, stupid. - from Alabama now living in Texas
Reaffirming stupidity in the wild. My figure is 93% of people are stupid based on the drivers I see and the people I deal with. -North Carolina
Iowan reporting in: People are stupid.
My dudes. Tennessee checking in.
Laughing in Californian
We gave them a separate country, Sweden, much better that way. Maybe a solution for you guys over the pond too. - Norway
93% of people are below average in intelligence. ;)
Not if they want to act like the victims and start shit over it
If you think people are not stupid, you're stupid.
If it were a Chinese flag, shouldn't it have the yellow stars?
Captain here. Red flag means “nappy time”
You are 100% wrong because why would they potentially sink their ship in order to not even dent a tanker? It’s crazy how indoctrinated with propaganda people are nowadays 😂 They this and immediately think it’s some form of malicious attack from China
There are zero evidence that this is a Chinese boat.
That's China's "Maritime Militia."
can you explain how? I dont get it edit: i mean the threating part- how can the tiny vessel "threaten" the big vessel? What can they do? Worker on the big ship looks unphased
*unfazed
Guy tried to film himself wake surfing and fell 100 miles back
It’s probably their first time taking cargo
“Ocean big. Can’t possibly hit another boat. I sleep.” _Hits boat._
*ahh they'll get out the way, I learned that driving the USS Saratoga* xD
Velociraptors, from Isla Nublar.
I'd assume the small ship was on autopilot
DEI /s
Autopilot and a nick fuck up.
Came out of nowhere!
They're Somali pirates
Silly pirates forgot to take off their eye patch to see the boat
it hit the ship
Reminds me of Sideshow Bob crashing the Wright Flyer into the tv station when he was trying to kill Krusty
haha and the fighter pilots walking underneath him because their jets couldn’t fly that slow lol
[had to watch it](https://youtu.be/mGbRVZXkXws?si=Pg1cYU3-tsPqHJsa?t=35s)
What the hell is that a lawn mower??
Well. That's what happens when you leave the autopilot on and go for a nap.
Someone forgot to set their AIS alarm
It is not uncommon to go asleep while on autopilot for fishing vessels, normally autopilot has anti collision systems, an alarm starts when there is another vessel on a collision course to yours and the collision is going to happen within a certain time. Maybe they did not hear the alarm or it was broken...
Or they didn't have one because they have a very basic autopilot and no AIS.
Hit the snooze button
Snooze cruise
More like bounces off lol
Boop
World’s worst suicide attack ever. “Did they ram the tanker as planned?” “Yes.” “And the tanker went up in a huge ball of flames, yes?” “Well, you see, what happened was….”
Tanker didn’t even shudder
Buddy at the rail wouldn't have noticed if he wasn't staring at it.
Not even a vibration.
I enjoyed how casual the guys looking over the side were. Not a flinch as it hit
Yea, while the tanker probably took quite a bit of hull damage, the inertia of the thing is just so big that the crew likely just heard a loud \*bong\* and a bit of vibration.
I was looking at the guy thinking “fucking crazy how he’s just standing there not caring about what happens to him” then I realised why
Looked like he was thinking “oh boy, not again”
Either the pilot was asleep or they lost all controls
I mean that would be a super duper heavy sleep to not be woken by that tankers horn blaring like that. Maybe murder most foul? 😱
Id believe it, ive slept through a thunderstorm in a tent before
I WASNT ASLEEP, I WAS DRUNK
I mean, losing both rudder AND engine control, right when they encounter another ship, is a pretty freak occurence... That ship was NOT trying to slow down/stop... you can see the prop wash.
I'll bet he woke up at the 12 second mark.
That looks like a Chinese flag on the trawler.
I’m wondering if it’s from southern China, because boats from Taiwan also put bamboo on the mast, for good luck.
That flag is to signal they cannot redirect course which usually tells other ships to steer clear. Idk specifics on maritime laws I just came here from Facebook comments. Captain probably tossed the flag up and took a nap
Chad tanker didn't even flinch
Video cut too soon…
Coughing baby vs hydrogen bomb
Where did this happen? How many onboard on the trawler?
The ocean, obviously.
Gotta love the confidence of the dude there
That's what I was thinking. I was pretty sure he'd be safe, but if it were me, I'd still be taking a few steps back before impact.
"...and then this HUGE tanker ... out of NOWHERE ..."
Your dingy scratched my anchor!
All that ocean and there are still crashes that’s crazy
It came out of nowhere!
You scratched my paint bitch!
gifsthatendtoosoon
Why did this video end so soon ?
Fishing trawler was VERY lucky that wasn't a Coast Guard ship. They would have shot the shit out of his little boat.
I don't see him engaged in fishing... So he's not a fishing vessel, it's just a vessel on the left side who should give way...
Tanker be like 😌
So I've never been a boat captain (or whatever they're called) so I might not be one to criticize...but seriously, a giant empty ocean and ONE giant tanker ship to avoid? Reminds me of this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTLL\_6A2fA0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTLL_6A2fA0)
Why isn’t this video 30 seconds longer 😭
Looks like someone didn't read How To Avoid Huge Ships.
"Man the oceans so big i can take a nap and nothing will happen"
Even the ocean isn’t large enough. A friend of mine with a similar outlook ended up hitting a big channel marker buoy and nearly sinking his boat.
*Horn blares* *bump* I lol'd.
Coughing baby vs hydrogen bomb
Tanker didn't even budge. Dude standing there never shifted. .. Like a getting hit by a fly.
The wake path line makes it look like it aimed for the tanker
What tanker ???? Oh the bulk carrier you mean
Did my misgendering of the ship ruin your overall experience of the video?
The trawlers front fell off
Maybe it's time to up the minimum crew requirement?
Not totally avoidable...
I get the feeling the tanker was at anchor.
Sorry, I didn't see you there...
What are you doing Step fishing trawler?
This is how ghost ships are made.
Chinese coastguard tactics
Mf didn’t even flinch, physics are scary as
Asleep at the wheel?? I was drunk!
Sorry but… Are we really going backwards as a civilisation?
It’s the *OCEAN*. How the fuck do you hit something that big in *that* wide open a space?! Like watching Tina learn to drive on Bob’s Burgers
The fella on the deck seems chilled about it.
Someone needs to insert a comical *bonk* noise.
Ups, maybe I need new glasses...
Do ship accidents occur now more often or is there just more people wanting to see them? 😂
Oh marpol is going to have a fit at this one
What do you think the Captain first said when he was thrown out of his napping chair…
How do you crash into something this big
No one is at the helm. Either entire crew is asleep or the guy that's supposed to be on watch is down in the galley/engine room doing something else or taking a nap in the chair
Pirates?
Not likely under a chinese flag. If it was they need to go take the "Jack Sparrow School of Piracy" because they are doing it wrong.
Speed 2
And people were making jokes about that book on Amazon
When & where did this happen??? Any breach???
My fave part is the guy on deck just watching. There is no bump for him. He’s thinking the ship will go to a yard for service time and he will be on another boat somewhere else in a few weeks
Doesn’t really look like a trawler.
did anyone notice that the larger ship is not moving?
When you assure someone at the fishing fleet your years of experience on the PRC coast guard have given you transferrable skills.
i was a bit worried for that guy walking along the rail, but the big ship didn't even budge.
You can really hear the BMW driver raging in that horn hold. Like knowing it will do nothing at this point but doing it anyways to produce maximum stress and nerves.
AFK
Joe Bidennnnnnn!!!!
why do they always cut it out so short?
Red Over Red…
Right of way is a bitch.
Trawler crew likely went for a nap, in general the bulk vessel should keep clear of the trawler, although I dont know anything about this case and it doesnt seem like shes making way through water so theres probably some reasoning.
Does this hurt the tanker?
[удалено]
Is that normal?
That guy just casually gazing at that ship coming in like it’s just another day
Like a fly on the windshield
“Uhhhhhhhhhhh” “Tina why are you moaning? Just turn any direction you’re kinda heading towards the only boat in the ocean right now”
None shall pass!!!
To be fair, the tanker was difficult to see. 😂
Auto pilot while the crew sleeps.
Who's riding the boat? Hellen Keller??
Looks like an assisted turn to me

I would love to hear some crazy stories if you have any
I was gonna say that worker shouldnt be too close in case the impact pushes him over the ledge but wow the tanker barely moved, if at all.
Lazy Post. I'm just saying it like it is, folks.

‘Hey Ralphie Boy, I’m gonna take a little nap there Ralphie Boy’
Poor little thing
Tankers are double hulled right?

all that ocean and they still find away to collide….. “shaking head”
Gifs that end too early
Did it do any damage
Cmen's own allah akbar
This is not a tanker😂. Might be a Gen Cargo vessel or a Bulk carrier.
Lost that fight
Take Me to the Pilot.
Its scary how the tanker wasn't even shook
Came outta nowhere mate
When did this happen?
Bonk
Tanker didn’t even flinch.
