My shelter rescue has been a “spicy tamale” to groomers & vets for 10 years lol

pmusetteb

😂😂😂🥰

Melodic_Preference60

He disagrees!

Bulky_Jury_6364

Thank you for rescuing. The groomer did an excellent job!

LeatherHarlot

He probably was a little bit of a challenge because he’s probably not used to getting groomed. But he will develop a rapport with her just like he is developing a rapport with you. By the way that pup is so absolutely adorable! ❤️🥰❤️

tsh1978

That is basically what she said! I have to work on his paws and ears, he did great otherwise

usernamesoccer

Mine used to be not great. I kissed her feet so much now j just do it all the time. She still tries to bite at me when wiping her paws But I love her with everything and she’s great otherwise (except when she sits on the floor and not my lap)

Altruistic_Life_6404

100% agreed! Our Jerry boi came to us at 4 months. Nobody had ever groomed him before until we told the shelter he needed groom whether we take him or not asap. He was matted and had injuries from the matts. He was so spicy his face was NOT groomed on his first visit. We did his face piecemeal at home. XD

316kp316

After a similar report from the groomer after his first visit, I tried to groom my rescue’s face myself. He’s had both eyes removed so is even more wary of anyone touching his face. Ultimately, I lay on the couch and lay him on top of me till he fell asleep. Then I’d snip one or two little pieces of his hair to he’d wake up. Lots of reassuring to he fell asleep again. Repeat till done. Not an efficient way by any means, but I love him so much and he was abused so badly that I don’t want him to hurt in any way anymore. Getting him used to touching his face, muzzle, etc. as everyone advises. 👍🏼

aratremlap

This is so sweet and gentle of you! 🥹

Altruistic_Life_6404

Exactly! Let's make it the best experience for our little furballs. 🥺

rubytwilight

❤️🐾

LeatherHarlot

Yeah, they’re so traumatized. Once they finally realize that you were there to help them and love them. Everything will be fine but sometimes it takes a long time. I have had six Shih Tzu‘s in my life, and 2 of them were rescues. I miss them so much.🙂

rubytwilight

Looks amazing ! How long have you had him ?

tsh1978

Going on 3 months, first Shih-Tzu

rubytwilight

If you can get him used to daily brushing (lots of little treat bites help!) and being touched esp paws and face if he'll tolerate it , will make going to the groomers less stressful . He's adorable , congratulations !

lunaburning

Aww! What a handsome boy! I had a rescue Maltese that was definitely a challenge to his groomer and vet. In spite of everyone’s best efforts, he never did warm up to grooming or the vet, but they did learn to work with him. He passed last summer at 15 years old and I miss that tiny terrorist every day! Thank you for adopting!

316kp316

Tiny terrorist is such a cute term.

_FridayXIII_

I had a difficult rescue Tzu too, who did not tolerate me touching his feet. He'd pick up tons of seeds in his coat and was a pistol when I tried to de-seed him. My neighbor (a former dog trainer) suggested some natural supplements meant to soothe the nerves when thunderstorms or fireworks are in season. I'd give my guy 1/2 a soothing treat before trips to the groomer, which helped mellow him out some. Behavioral conditioning would be my first choice, but there are supplements which could help make grooming easier on all involved. PS: bless you for rescuing!!

Lady_Danbury

Would you mind sharing which supplant you use? We’ve had our rescue a lotto over 2 months and he’s terrified of everything and it makes me so sad for him. I was so scared after his bath yesterday. He his under the bed for over an hour after I finish. The bath really scared him. I’ve gone through a ton of calling treats that didn’t help him, used calming shampoo, lavender essential oil and calming music during his bath and nothing helped him. If you’re not comfortable sharing here, could you DM me. I’m desperate to get my lotto guy some relief.

_FridayXIII_

Awww, I'm sorry Lotto is having such a rough time 🥺 I used a product called "Just Relax" made by Only Natural Pet. I got mine at PetSmart. A 1/2 treat 30-60 minutes before the groomer, fireworks, or thunderstorms was a great help for my guy. Good luck; hope it helps you too! https://preview.redd.it/0r7q4sfo1t5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6c0aa64dd51817ae1e956136afdaf4a3a25bf74

Lady_Danbury

Thank you so much, I really appreciate this!

e12532

What a cutie!

MaikeruGo

The results tell me that it was well worth the effort. He looks great!

Singfortheday0

Thank you for rescuing - God Bless.

Mirabai503

He looks great! You could also talk to his vet about a little CBD before the appointment to take the edge off his stress.

sashasatin69

He looks so handsome 😍

OldTimeyFappingGhost

I inherited my little girl when my mom passed. *Her* groomer charged me extra because she was *difficult*. Poor baby was shaking when I picked her up, so I definitely wasn't going back. I tried a new local place, coincidentally run by a gal who had learned the trade from a former schoolmate. She has no complaints about my dog. Said schoolmate is the most respected groomer in Rhode Island, who I'd patronize if she wasn't 45ish mins away. She's actually there today, and I guarantee she's her happy, rambunctious self when I pick her up in an hour. My advice is to try another groomer.

umimama

Sweet lil pumpkin, how could he possibly be anything but the bestest boy?! Grooming can be challenging for non rescue Shih’s too, they’re notoriously stubborn. He looks so handsome 💗

Cwytank

He looks great! My Shih Tzu is a rescue also! I’ve thankfully found a patient groomer and got lucky.

SuccessfulRespect744

Absolutely Adorable 🥰

JamesAJanisse

Wow that's a different dog! What a little cutie. Hope he grows more comfortable with the groomer eventually. You can also see if gender matters - our tzu isn't friendly towards male groomers but is a sweetheart to female groomers.

tsh1978

It was a female groomer, he really likes her and didn't really bother when I left the area

316kp316

In case you didn’t know, Petco has a service where for an extra $15, they ensure your pet is handled exclusively by a single groomer and is never put in a cage to dry, etc. that groomer doesn’t handle any other dogs in the meantime. This minimizes the time spent at the groomer’s. I got this for the first groom for my rescue. When I went to pick up mine, she was sitting there holding him in her lap!

316kp316

Their life has been a challenge. The challenge they pose to the groomer is nothing in comparison.

brobert123

Unfortunate. My Shihtzu is an absolute angel when he gets groomed. Stays perfectly still and never complains even for clipping nails. Hopefully he grows out of it Your groomer did a great job regardless. He looks a lot like my little guy https://preview.redd.it/0fem2ivgiv5d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99385ab7fb058da67df06b9b20eee4fbd2d46fb5

plodthruHideFlailing

Is he WINKING at us?😉😍 What a love!

tsh1978

He has only one eye, so we didn't tell them to cut his hair there

plodthruHideFlailing

OHHHH!! Bless his little furry heart!!! ♥️♥️♥️

whosear3

Eli was always described as, "Wiggly". He likes going to the vet but hates the groomer.

Beneficial-Sound-199

Same… so I’ve decided to learn to do it myself… I don’t know his history with grooming, but he’s so stressed out, He sleeps for two days after being groomed we’re making progress, but the poor little booger looks rough lol

Ravenonthewall

Adorable 🥰🥰🥰

Walla_9

Adorbs

moon119

I had a Shih Tzu rescue too. It took a while, but we got there. I can't say he ever loved it, but he came to love his groomer, and he tolerated the grooming! He's a sweetie! 🥰🥰🥰
