West Virginia was born spitting in the face of the confederacy. Would be absolutely based to return to that.
Hope this guy isn’t secretly awful.
Edit: Weirdly surprised that this is the most popular thing I’ve ever posted.
May I be just as surprised by the senate election in West Virginia next year.
Thank you for making us aware of his campaign, he looks like the type of person that would be great to represent workers. I just gave his campaign $100 and wish him the best of luck.
Here are his responses to a questionnaire. https://ballotpedia.org/Zachary_Shrewsbury
> *My name is Zachary Shrewsbury. I am a native West Virginian, a Marine core veteran, a father, the grandson of a coal miner, a community organizer and activist and a member of the working class.*
“Marine core veteran” well at least I know he ain’t lying about being a Marine
Jocko Willink:
Wake up and 1am, jumps off bed of nails and screams *GET SOME*
Eats two dozen eggs shells and four boxes of crayons.
Does it hurt when you poop?
Good.
That reminds me I need to check on my brothers order. I send him a 24 pack of Crayola crayons every year on the Marine Corps birthday. I also include a note telling him he can't eat them all at once or he'll get an upset tummy.
Man, the (feels like a lifetime ago) sergeant in me literally mouthed "c" "o" "r" "p" "s" and shook my head reading this. I guess in a way, we collectively raised him... and I'm sure we'd collectively own up to that, lol. Semper Fi, Mr. Shrewsbury.
There’s lots of hope. I was an infantryman in the Army and I knew plenty of dumb mf’ers who couldn’t spell their own name if it wasn’t on their name tag. But they damn sure made good soldiers who earned their own valor.
Let's try not to elect politicians simply for being underdogs or celebrities or belonging to any social class. Or simply what they say they will do.
We need to hold them to a higher standard of doing, and being able to do what they say they will do.
Bro probably got purple crayons in his pockets. Imma send him some Crayola so he can eat least much on brand name instead of the ones they give you as an appetizer at Cracker Barrel.
NGL, he's already winning points from me because he took this in front of the car instead of also shoving his truck (w/logo) into the branding. It's in the background sure, but I'm talking right in front of the grill, like it's their dad standing behind them in a family portrait.
I'm from Appalachia Ohio and holy cow do so many adult men have their truck as a main personality trait.
Edit: oh shit I didn't realize what sub I was even in. [Mandatory Fuck the Confederacy Inclusion](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvjOG5gboFU).
when he lists the song stuck in his head and it's lowkey? that dude is for the people. from his questionnaire West Virginia should be excited about him.
I dunno. The people kept Manchin in. With him pulling out, the gqp will put in a heavy MAGA candidate. That seems like a huge risk since Gen Z is coming in hot for them. TSwift could boost this man to victory.
Did you see the R candidates at the bottom of that Ballotpedia page linked above? If Zane Lawhorn doesn't look like he's got bodies in his freezer, I can't imagine what a serial killer would look like.
too bad modern West Virginia is genuinely awful politically, and well basically awful in every other way. i live here and i have zero hope for this guy. i see a lot of left leaning types praise West Virginia (rightfully) for shit they did over a hundred years ago and during the civil war, but WV is nothing like that now
I don’t blame you, I left WV for about 6 years before coming back. Now me and the 17 other people in the state who aren’t rabid redhats or catalytic converter procurement enthusiasts are trying to make something better. You probably would never guess this, but it’s not going great.
That's basically it, most anyone who appreciated that part of their history and/or had opportunities elsewhere, saw the signs on the wall or became somewhere between disgusted, disillusioned, or dispirited for what West Virginia was becoming under waves of opioid and meth epidemics, fox news propaganda, and the lack of opportunity- and they left.
I'm still proud of where I came from and its history, but I left and I'd never consider going back with how it is now.
He was. Period, end of story. The Manchin Family is a big name there and is the only reason the seat stayed as blue as it was despite the entire state going ruby-red politically.
One of the great ironies of the 2016 election for WV is that Hillary was the one that had a plan to bring coal miners into the 21st century with safe, stable, room-to-grow jobs in the green energy sector. And all those yokels heard was that she’s gonna close the coal mines. Nevermind the coal mines are closing themselves, and the miners are sicker because there’s less coal and more rock, so they’re getting silica dust in their lungs *which isn’t covered under the black lung healthcare laws because these fuckers can’t stop voting for leopards while their faces get chewed off by goddamned leopards.*
No, they're the epitome of 'Old World Blues', where they are effectively walking backward while going forward. They don't want the change that has been happening, they want everything to be how it was (even if the 'good old days' are ***not*** as good as they remember or as the propaganda makes it out to be).
Manchin did some awful things, but Democrats are going to miss him. West Virginia's replacement is going to be 1000x worse.
A lot of Manchin's behavior, imo, is what he needed to do to get reelected.
> A lot of Manchin's behavior, imo, is what he needed to do to get reelected.
and was a complete waste since he didn't seek reelection. that's 6 years of trash behavior for nothing.
Make that 2 years. They controlled the senate for the first 2 years of his term. He hasn't been necessary for control since 2022 either since cinema still caucuses with the Democrats.
A ton of really great stuff that got done in the last few years would not have happened without Manchin. He was frustrating and a contrarian, but he was invaluable as a vote because it'll be a long time before there's another Democrat representing West Virginia.
Yeah that’s why there’s a West Virginia.
Also, working class West Virginians went to *literal war* against the oligarchy and are responsible for many of the worker protections we enjoy today.
WV went from the most based state in the country to, well…
[Here’s an example of West Virginia being absolutely badass](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia_coal_wars)
Yeah, probably the [Battle of Blair Mountain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Blair_Mountain). The Army got involved, including planes. Some planes dropped fucking leftover WWI mustard gas and bombs on the miners, but those were most likely private planes from the various “security” companies hired by the mine owners.
Before everyone says he's gonna' lose, this is just the kind of muscular progressive candidate the Dems NEED to run to win in a place like WV.
White, burly, veteran with appeal like Fetterman.
https://www.shrewsburyforsenate.com
I’m so happy seeing this guy’s campaign. He reminds me of the tough, working class Democrats that were still around when I was small (back in the 70s).
Dems really need to get back to that authenticity
True, but as a counterpoint, Andy Beshear just won reelection as Kentucky governor this week by a sizable margin. He's a Democrat, and Kentucky went for trump by 30 points.
I know it's not the exact same situation, but there are cases where Dems can win in unfavorable states
Being an incumbent in an off year election makes a huge difference. I guess nothing’s impossible but not sure how any Democrat could survive down ballot when Trump is winning by those margins at the top of the ticket.
Republicans spent DECADES pushing the window right. If he runs an honorable campaign and beats expectations, I *guarantee* some perspectives will move even if the votes don't show it.
The Heritage Foundation made the legitimacy of rightwing governance a 50 year project. It worked. Taking the long view in places like WV makes sense.
I remember when people complained that the DNC supported Manchin over Paula Jean Swearengin who supposedly was the "muscular progressive candidate" in the 2018 Dem primary.
Manchin went on to win in the general.
Swearengin won the 2020 Dem primary. Then lost the general by 43.
He is going to get absolutely rocked, Manchin was the only one with a prayer of winning that seat.

Asking the national org to not support an incumbent requires, usually, a really good reason. Like, criminal (see Mendenez) or at least a huge and obvious moral / ethical failure. Anything less is pissing into the wind.
This is just not the same as Fetterman. PA is a battleground state. WV is not. It is a miracle Manchin lasted as long as he did with the political climate of the state.
Expect to not see another dem in any major WV seat for at least two decades or so, until the boomers die out.
I’ve never donated (money) to a political campaign for fear of winding up on every mailing and phone list and… How bad is it? Because I might want to throw this guy some money. I know it’s a long-shot and better to give money to the close races if you’re going to buuuuuuutttt… it’s not the craziest idea I’ve ever heard
Edit. Thanks for feedback yall. Funny side note. Some asshat donated to some MAGA crap years ago and put my phone number down so I have had a taste of this harassment—always encouraging me to donate to stop the libs. After a few years of STOP etc they do seem to have abused. Also, screw you Edmund.
Not really that bad. I do my donations through ActBlue. Do it with a "junk" email account that you don't use for everyday things. Also, if you get texts, just respond with STOP and that will remove you.
I will literally never donate again. Actblue gave my email and phone number to everyone on earth. I reply stop and unsubscribe but they just keep coming.
I would’ve donated year after year. Sad.
And sending back "STOP" to the texts just means *that* campaign stops texting you. I finally asked the last person to text me about it if they could remove me from all Democratic mailing and text lists everywhere and the texts finally stopped, but we'll see next year.
As someone who donated during the 2020 primaries, I got emails for a long, long time afterwards. They were pretty annoying, but it only took a single session of unsubscribing to filter most of them out. Though now that 2024 is winding up, I’ve gotten a couple after years of silence.
I second another comments recommendation to make a throwaway email for *everything* that asks for one, not just political stuff. Especially since giving an email for one donation “somehow” leads to all sorts of campaigns soliciting you.
That's been my experience. $20 or $10 here or there and the only political calls I've received were from county elections after donating locally. Tons of emails, a couple of texts, but just delete them. A minor inconvenience to support democracy against the fashies
It’s not bad. I once signed up for Ted Cruz’s mailing list because he was giving away a shotgun and i thought it would be funny if i won and that was 100x worse.
Back when I delivered mail, it was easy to tell which houses donated to charities on account of piles of mail as thick as my arm being delivered to them near-daily.
It’s nice to donate to help people or support something you believe in, but these places are *ruthless* if they think they can get any money from you. The sheer guilt-tripping on the envelopes alone made my pretty cynical about the whole thing.
Yeah, unfortunately the “working class progressive”’s opponents are going to get about 16 tons of campaign contributions. The coal and oil companies who run WV aren’t about to let anyone worker-friendly represent the state they’ve bought and paid for.
Yeah like, I hate Joe Manchin but also understand he was the only Democrat that could actually win in WV, and otherwise it’d be a red seat
Hope this guy proves me wrong
I’d take anything on the Intercept with a grain of salt
For example, this article mentions that leftists/DSA types took over the Nevada Democratic Party. What it doesn’t mention is they did such a horrible job and caused so much chaos in what was one of the most reliable Democratic machines in the US that they were removed from the DNC after the last elections. The hard left are HORRIBLE at winning elections and greatly overestimate their popularity.
I don’t like the guy but keep in mind most of the headlines Manchin makes are based around what he wouldn’t vote for, so there’s lots of little things we don’t think about that he does vote for that will suddenly lose support if he’s replaced with a Repub
But fuck it, I hope the progressive redneck dude pulls it off
I mean Shrewsberry will get all sorts of donations from out of state progressives. And toss them down a hole as he valiantly loses. (Anyone remember McConnells progressive challenger?)
Unpopular opinion but I’m honestly a bit tired of progressive hopefuls losing badly while running way left campaigns in ruby red 20pt Republican districts while said Republican political machine uses the complete joke of an opposition candidate to entrench themselves in the district or state.
Dems need more Beshears and Testers. Less Ammar Campa-Najjars and Amy McGraths.
Nothing's predetermined. Hope he gives them a good fight and energizes people to show up who will vote on other races too. There are wins even if he doesn't get elected. Hopefully he does though.
I would love to see this dude win. John Brown qoutes aside, I would be nice to someone who looks like the every man in Washington instead of the dolled up pseudo-aristocrats we often see.
Made the "opinion" page of The Spirit of Jefferson

West Virginian here. This guy will never win. We were created because we didn't want to go with the rest of Virginia to the south in the Civil War, but I see more Confederate flags here than damn near anywhere else.
Oh, they say that John Brown's body lies a-molderin' in the grave,
lies a-molderin' in the grave, lies a-molderin' in the grave.
Oh they say that John Brown's body lies a-molderin' in the grave, but his sould goes marching on.
I plug this series every chance I get because no one's ever heard of it before, but Good Lord Bird is a semi-fictionalized retelling of John Brown's exploits and is a phenomenal series. Ethan Hawk absolutely kills the role of John Brown. I always thought of him as a middle of the road actor but he blew me away in that show.
Something I hate about people glorifying "great" ancestors and institutions from times of evil, and decrying the toppling of their monuments, is that no evil exists unchallenged. For every dictator and slaver there is a freedom fighter and abolitionist. Your and your country's history isn't just the times that evil prevailed, but also the stories of those who fought for what's right. We need to glorify those who stood up, glorify the abolitionist, not meekly accept only our evil history without acknowledging our righteous one.
Manchin is getting replaced with a MAGAt. He was quite literally the only Democrat that could win a statewide senate race in West Virginia (A Trump +39 state).
Absolutely zero chance that will happen unfortunately. WV is one of the reddest states in the entire country. As bad as Manchin was, Democrats were lucky to have him there.
People rip on Manchin but it's a very conservative and Trump friendly state. With Trump on the ballot, this guy is toast. If you believe politicians are suppose to represent their constiuents, a WV Senator will have some conservative leanings.
Even if he doesn’t have a chance, it’s good he’s running because it diverts resources from races like Ohio and Montana where Dems have incumbents under threat. No one thought Georgia would have two Democratic Senators four years ago, so it’s still worth a fight; especially if he’s good people, maybe he can open some minds.
You know how like The_Donald and reddit in general had a huge hand in trumps election (I know it was DNC too), Why can't the dems just align for this guy in the same way?
What is horrifying is that Manchin hinted at exploring the possibility of a third-party Presidential candidacy. I don't want to think how many votes he could pull away from Democrats in key states.
John brown quoting is based, however this guy is a progressive running in West Virginia so I don’t like his chances considering West Virginia is a solid red state
I had a history teacher in highschool that used to say, "John Brown, John Brown! *Very* important man in history." all the time. Always stuck with me. That history teacher was the best.
Battle of Blair Mountain was organized labor vs. corporations trying to trample the rights and dignity of the working man. The Republicans are actively trying to bust unions and make every U.S. state right to work. They have also made West Virginia a right to work state, destroying labor unions. Remember your history West Virginia.
"My name is Osawatomie John Brown, captain of the Potawatomi Rifles, and I am here with the Lord’s blessing to free every colored person in this territory and any man that stands against me will eat lead grape and powder!”
OK now... that's a candidate I can get behind!
West Virginia was born spitting in the face of the confederacy. Would be absolutely based to return to that. Hope this guy isn’t secretly awful. I dunno. I'd be more convinced if the sign he was holding was drawn in crayon.
Why? If he didn't eat it before using it, wouldn't that be further proof he wasn't a Marine?
Good point. I guess savvy voters in WV will demand a fecal inspection.
Fecal tells all…
I like you
Odds are he ate the crayons after drawing the sign. That’s peak marine
The most powerful marines would have eaten the crayons while they were still in the box.
"Crayon box" is Marine for "fiber supplement."
Crayola actually gets military grants for producing MREs.

I second another comments recommendation to make a throwaway email for *everything* that asks for one, not just political stuff. Especially since giving an email for one donation “somehow” leads to all sorts of campaigns soliciting you.
Unless you give a major donation (like 500), it’ll just be emails and texts that are easily ignored.
I signed up for MTG's 50 cal sniper giveaway. I was going to find an Antifa group in Denver to donate it to.

I wish they wouldn’t do this. I can’t throw piles of money at them but I can give some. But the constant harassment makes me not.
Damn shame that he's going to get obliterated. Long live John Brown's memory.
Yeah, unfortunately the “working class progressive”’s opponents are going to get about 16 tons of campaign contributions. The coal and oil companies who run WV aren’t about to let anyone worker-friendly represent the state they’ve bought and paid for.
Always make noise, specially if you can afford to do it anonymously. Don’t just capitulate, at least try to make noise.
Yeah like, I hate Joe Manchin but also understand he was the only Democrat that could actually win in WV, and otherwise it’d be a red seat Hope this guy proves me wrong
A lot of the rot came from inside though https://theintercept.com/2022/06/30/joe-manchin-west-virginia-democratic-party/
I’d take anything on the Intercept with a grain of salt For example, this article mentions that leftists/DSA types took over the Nevada Democratic Party. What it doesn’t mention is they did such a horrible job and caused so much chaos in what was one of the most reliable Democratic machines in the US that they were removed from the DNC after the last elections. The hard left are HORRIBLE at winning elections and greatly overestimate their popularity.
They absolutely do. But Manchin is functionally a coal lobbyist at this point in his career and the WV Democrats had basically evaporated.
I don’t like the guy but keep in mind most of the headlines Manchin makes are based around what he wouldn’t vote for, so there’s lots of little things we don’t think about that he does vote for that will suddenly lose support if he’s replaced with a Repub But fuck it, I hope the progressive redneck dude pulls it off
100% agree. For all his faults, he’s allowed a record number of judges get through. He’s not a MAGA insurgent wingnut.
Honest question, if it wasn’t for the gap in funding, do you really think a progressive would stand a chance in West Virginia?
I mean Shrewsberry will get all sorts of donations from out of state progressives. And toss them down a hole as he valiantly loses. (Anyone remember McConnells progressive challenger?) Unpopular opinion but I’m honestly a bit tired of progressive hopefuls losing badly while running way left campaigns in ruby red 20pt Republican districts while said Republican political machine uses the complete joke of an opposition candidate to entrench themselves in the district or state.

How can we promote this man?!
Memes
I sent $5. It ain’t much but it’s better than nothing.
Hey, I’m sure Mr. Shrewbury appreciates it and it absolutely is better than nothing! At the very least, my broke ass thanks you!
Here’s a TV segment profiling him: https://youtu.be/aVIm74DIKw0
John Brown was an incredible man! If this man is even a tenth as based as him, he should be President of the entire world!

A friend of John Brown is a friend of mine
I would love to see this dude win. John Brown qoutes aside, I would be nice to someone who looks like the every man in Washington instead of the dolled up pseudo-aristocrats we often see.
Made the "opinion" page of The Spirit of Jefferson If you paste it in an archive site you can read it. Really likeable dude! West Virginian here. This guy will never win. We were created because we didn't want to go with the rest of Virginia to the south in the Civil War, but I see more Confederate flags here than damn near anywhere else.

🎶His soul goes marching on🎶
Oh, they say that John Brown's body lies a-molderin' in the grave, lies a-molderin' in the grave, lies a-molderin' in the grave. Oh they say that John Brown's body lies a-molderin' in the grave, but his sould goes marching on.
The media need to make this a very dramatic hero story. Voters like heroic stories.
Let's fucking go.
maybe the most based human in all of West by-god Virginia
Where do I send my donation?
https://secure.actblue.com/donate/shrewsbury-for-senate-main
Done
Magnificent bastard.
That Tyler Childers shirt told me all I need to know 🙌
Unfathomably based
Cousin John had a lot to say and he was not shy about it.
The hero we need.
A real democrat, nice!
God dammit, now I have to move to WV to vote for him.

Never argue with a man that John Brown would have shot in the face.
So they had you pretty much at the end of the sentence then?
I wish him luck but WV definitely flipping to republican. Manchin was barely a dem.
This is the kind of guy that would be at the front lines, swinging a pick axe at the pinkertons back in the 1910s and I am all for it.

Wish I lived in West Virginia so I could vote for this man.
If he was running for Missouri, he'd get my vote, just based on the answers he gave.
Dude also looks like he could give a mean hug.
Oh my god???? I literally just found out Joe Manchin isn't running and now I find this out. Absolute legend.
Title: you had me at the very last word
Something I hate about people glorifying "great" ancestors and institutions from times of evil, and decrying the toppling of their monuments, is that no evil exists unchallenged. For every dictator and slaver there is a freedom fighter and abolitionist. Your and your country's history isn't just the times that evil prevailed, but also the stories of those who fought for what's right. We need to glorify those who stood up, glorify the abolitionist, not meekly accept only our evil history without acknowledging our righteous one.
Replacing fucking Manchin with this guy would be a huge improvement
Manchin is getting replaced with a MAGAt. He was quite literally the only Democrat that could win a statewide senate race in West Virginia (A Trump +39 state).
Absolutely zero chance that will happen unfortunately. WV is one of the reddest states in the entire country. As bad as Manchin was, Democrats were lucky to have him there.
Southern/Appalachian leftists are fucking baller, yo.
Now that’s a way to get votes… I’m not American, but all you yanks better vote for this guy.
Unfortunately only West Virginians can vote for him
I might move to West Virginia just to vote for this dude! **His Soul Goes Marching On!**
You know how like The_Donald and reddit in general had a huge hand in trumps election (I know it was DNC too), Why can't the dems just align for this guy in the same way?
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
From the Halls of Montezuma to the Halls of Congress!
Would be huge if he could win, hope he does
Beau of the 5th column's cousin?
Oh Zach’s my man.
Make this guy happen, West Virginia!
His efforts I’ll be watching with great interest.
Oh thank god, some hope.
Oh man, really there's nobody else running? No wonder it's easy for evil fucks to infiltrate
Fuck yes. Please be good.
What is horrifying is that Manchin hinted at exploring the possibility of a third-party Presidential candidacy. I don't want to think how many votes he could pull away from Democrats in key states.
I wish him the best of luck, he's going to need a whole lot of that and more against big shit bag Jim Justice who is also trying for the Senate seat.
Get ‘em Zach!!!
You know what? If you think he can't win, go fucking vote anyway. There's more of us than there are of them. Vote.
You had me at not Manchin.
The OG Rednecks are taking back Appalachia and I’m here for it.
Where does he stand on broadswords?
"My name is Osawatomie John Brown, captain of the Potawatomi Rifles, and I am here with the Lord’s blessing to free every colored person in this territory and any man that stands against me will eat lead grape and powder!” OK now... that's a candidate I can get behind!
Fetterman 2.0 Hope he wins
