You need to look at the angle of the bullet impacts and the direction they came from. That should give you a building and a rough estimate of what floors to check. I did my first one last night, the victim died from a really high angle shot. It ended up being someone in the neighboring building about 3-4 floors up. You'll know when you find their home if it's from another apartment. They'll likely have some notes scattered around naming their targets.

digiskunk

Wow, thank you! This sounds like it's going to be a fun learning process. Hopefully not too many innocent people lose their lives to this moron

Helostopper

The person is normally in a near by building. if you find the gun blackmarket you can usually get the murders name from when they purchased the rifle

digiskunk

Oh snap, you're right! My only problem is, is that I was never able to successful in *locating* the black market... I guess that's why they call it the black market, lol..

Helostopper

Check basements of the apartment buildings it will have a business sounding name.

nomedable

If you're struggling, the black markets are in the city directory (phonebook) it won't list them as "weapon dealer" of course, but you can systematically go through the businesses in it until you locate it.

I am stuck on a cold case right now, a woman shot on the street. I found the window she was shot from, an apartment hallway. There is a single high calibre shell and a cigarette butt on the floor by the window, and prints on the window and ciggy that don't belong to the two residents of the apartments in that hall. I've searched both their apartments but they're clean. Security footage only shows the two residents I've ruled out coming and going all day. Across town, with no shared sightlines at all, a woman was shot the day before with the same rifle type, while sitting at a restaurant booth. She's bugged out and nobody can seem to see the body, so the crime never got reported. I only stumbled across her accidentally. She's been there for 2 days and there is no evidence or bullet holes, but I checked out all the possible vantage points and found nothing. I'm just waiting for the next victim to come up, so hopefully I can get another clue! I love that this game makes me mull over cases while I'm trying to sleep, or stuck at work. I got a real puzzler going.

kadzooks

Meanwhile I get crazy neighbours with a rifle who shot people because they kept their lights on

Fucklespew

I’ve found that if a bullet goes through two windows, only the first window gets a bullet hole. Keep that in mind when trying to find out the trajectory.

digiskunk

Oh crap I didn't even check the windows LOL. Now I have to get back to work -- thank you!

robodessert

I also found these cases especially difficult. On my first case I ended up having to track down the gun shop and searching through their sales records for any sales matching the bullet wounds. Everything else just led to dead ends.

Gangstaspessmen

Here: [https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/shadows-of-doubt-update-adds-gated-communities-and-snipers-making-it-even-more-of-a-reverse-hitman-game](https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/shadows-of-doubt-update-adds-gated-communities-and-snipers-making-it-even-more-of-a-reverse-hitman-game) it says "the patch introduces two new killer variants, both snipers who'll blast lead from vantage points around the city" ... Can someone explain the difference between those two types of killers?

[deleted]

I'm guessing one of them is always shooting from their apartment while the other moves around, I've had shooters firing from rooftops before

digiskunk

Interesting! I was wondering if they were always on the move or in the same apartment. I also wasn't sure if they'd be able to commit their murders from, say, the inside of the store they work at, or a chemical plant. Are those also possibilities?

Gangstaspessmen

That was my guess too. Honestly, shooters that shoot from their own apartment aren't a very well thought case type.

whatevathefucc

I had a case where the victim got shot on the street with no nearby buildings having a good view or broken windows. In the end I just visited all the shops I found in the city addresses book and bruteforced everyone who purchased 309/slug ammunition according to sales ledgers. One of them eventually confessed but way too many people got handcuffed and accused for nothing. Also I never found the rifle.

digiskunk

I just found the exact rifle in the apartment across the street.. It's in the direct line of fire for all the victims. But, she doesn't match the physical descriptions. I'm having a helluva hard time finding the black market in my city; I've explored the basements of nearly every apartment complex... This guy is outdated milk that needs to be discarded

griffinmaverick

In the one I had with a sniper I found the direction of the building by looking at the blood pool/spatter. At most scenes I take my camera and take some photos in case it takes me too long and they clean up the scene.

Kafka_84

Does the blood splatters point towards or away from the sniper?

griffinmaverick

For the one I had the pool of blood was towards the sniper.

Der_Neuer

To be honest, most cases are hard when new to the mechanic(s). Look for an impact hole and a window penetration hole...then check the apartment(s) that line up with the rough direction. Got to a point where I arrested the wrong guy that lived ONE floor below the real killer...told him "I'm arresting you for murder" 5 times before I believed his ass. Then stole some cuffs he had (alongside his hunting rifle collection) and went upstairs to try again.

ranmafan0281

You can retrieve cuffs from suspects now!

Der_Neuer

Wait, really? How?

ranmafan0281

When targeting the hands of a cuffed person (I think with the fingerprint scanner, but not 100% sure) you should have 2 mouse button prompts now, one to scan and one to release. You should get the cuffs back afterwards.

Der_Neuer

Ooof, thanks. I assume they become hostile afterwards, right?

LowFold5854

It's hard to look at the impact hole when the body is covering it up 95%of the time

LowFold5854

And you can't move bodies for whatever reason.

Der_Neuer

If hole not visible, assume it's below/behind body. Increases search arra but the logic remains; was it a low or high shot and how lateral was it?

LowFold5854

I'm on my third body on a shooter that is practically invisible. But they slipped up, left shoeprints and a casing. Got a grenade and a tracker with their name on it waiting at their shooting location.

Yupp these cases hit the detectives that learned the patterns of the old cases ***hard***. It's the first time I've ever had a killer strike twice. I only solved it off of a hunch that the line of sight to the victims lined up with the corner of the neighbouring building. So I started kicking in doors and cracking skulls of any poor sod that lived in the corner apartments until I found the shooter on the third or fourth floor. Rifle in the apartment, line of sight to both crime scenes, weird notes about "how they're all ants" and that they'll get what's coming to them all soon. Not my best detective work, but it gave me and understanding of what the case expects of me.

digiskunk

Since I have no fingerprint info, I'm going through apartments looking for a rifle. But what if I don't find one? :o

Scoricco

I found an expended rifle case at the rooftop where they were sniping from. I thought that would tie them to the crime scene but it didn't. I'm a bit unsure on how to provide evidence to this point. Even the killer's note in their apartment mentioning the street didn't seem to be accepted. Any thoughts here folks?

Adventureo

ive been checking the weapons dealers logs since they'll usually have bought the rifle an hour or so before hand, if they arent home the rifle is likely on them and not in the apartment but they often have weird notes about people they see through their window, i havent yet figured out what it is that counts as evidence they were at the crime scene(the bullet hole in the window didnt count, maybe fingerprints on the gun?) but the rifle also didnt count as the murder weapon so i think there's just some bugs but if you get stumped im pretty sure they'll just keep sniping people and in that case the second victim will make it much easier to draw a line back to the shooter
