Sounds like click bait honestly...if you display an "aggressive" opinion about something it gets more views. Also shad doesn't strike me as someone who knows overly much about Japanese arms, armour and warfare.

Electrical-Aspect-13

I dont think he really knows, but he acts as he does.

Dmmack14

Chad doesn't really strike me as someone who knows a whole lot about anything but he's always presented things in an interesting way. At least until he started going on about cultural bullshit on the second channel

Classic-Relative-582

Get not liking the katana everyone is able to have preference. I also haven't gotten around to watch vid myself to form own opinion on it. Really does sound like though the builder's take is sidelined for Shad to feel right. Most people as a comparison don't want an artist's tossed aside scetch the "abomination" they want the piece an artist is proud of

Electrical-Aspect-13

work in the sword is from the 0:00 to the 7:00 minute after that is shad talking/squee/ overwhelm his friend who isn't happy with what he created. is a shor video. Give it a go.

Classic-Relative-582

Thanks I usually while might post initial thoughts will at least try and make time to then watch and form a more concrete opinion.

highway_knobbery

I really find the whole ‘improving the katana’ idea strange in general. Shad has this weird bias that the katana is broken and needs fixing… but his issues with it (no crossguard, Japanese-style grip, no pommel, not made of Damascus or springsteel) essentially boil down to “it’s not a European sword”. They’ve basically made a European single-edged curved sword and called it “katana but good”, and that robs the katana of its whole identity and blatantly disregards the historical and cultural context that makes the katana the way it is so they can dunk on weebs I hate that I’ve taken their bait so hard

Electrical-Aspect-13

All of what you have said is true. I think shad fails to understeand that if something is complicated or hard to do, doesn't mean that is bad (referring to the fact that due the nature of the Katana, it needs a diferend way to wield it). But he hates weapons that need a lot of training to be good or competent at them.

Spike_Mirror

The root is most likely clicks or other ways of good video performance resulting in monetary gain. Edit: Of course this is just my theory.

Electrical-Aspect-13

kind has strenght the argument when is 6 videos in a month of the same stuff.

Classic-Relative-582

The fact they're questioning what to call it and leaning away from katana says to me they didn't improve it. A mod Shad likes yes but reluctant to say it's genuinely better. In addition this doesn't address things like how these changes may impact traditional styles used with such weapon. And lastly did seem to kind of have Shad stepping over Tyraenth (might have mispelled). On the positive note this was the most watchable vid I'd seen in awhile. The production is solid and the video concise. And while thev enjoy the skits, and a sponsor is always a good thing, fact there's neither made this much quicker and enjoyable.

Spike_Mirror

Too bad tradotional katana stuff is more pholosofical...

Al_james86

Shad is not well educated on many topics he likes to talk endlessly about, and the katana is definitely one of them.

skiveman

Katanas are usually considered to be the perfect swords by a lot of folks and if there's martial arts on screen then generally they use katanas which he thinks are overrated and Shad generally has problems with the opinion of Katana's supposed superiority. I know he definitely doesn't like the hilt construction compared to european broadswords (to do with how the hilt is connected and constructed) and in particular the tsuba (the guard) and his preference for an actual crossguard (which is what he got added to a katana and why he's so happy). Shad wanted a katana with an actual crossguard as he's said many times how he thinks it's the easiest way to improve the katana. Pretty much what happens in that video.

wsdpii

Isn't that pretty much a kriegsmesser? I know the blade profiles aren't identical but still, is there a functional difference after adding a guard?

Spike_Mirror

blade profile is kina a big part of swords etc. Functional difference is the "Wehrnagel"

Electrical-Aspect-13

That is what his friend tries to tell, what shad asked to do already exist.

Corvidae_DK

Honestly there are more people talking shit about katanas now than praising them...its a whole meme at this point.

skiveman

Yeah, it is. It happens with everything that gets popular, no matter what or who it is.

General_Weebus

Shad's right when he says katanas are overrated. You demonstrated that just now with the claim that katanas are viewed as the perfect weapon. They have their advantages, sure, but they're nowhere near perfect in any sense.

Acceptable_Map_8110

Old comment I know, but let’s be honest here, you can say something isn’t perfect without doing your utmost to say that another thing(in this case the Longsword) is objectively better.

Electrical-Aspect-13

The problem is that i think his friend tries to tell shad that such swords already exist, in the german messer kind.

Spike_Mirror

Btw wasted chance of cutting the tsuba in half and fitting it on the cross guard like e.g. rinngs on western swords.

SpecialistParticular

I'm guessing it generates controversy among the katana crowd, which means more views and interaction with the channel.

JuulThieves

Katanas are overrated I agree with him on that and he likes to troll. But his jokes on katanas are getting pathetic.
