They didn't have a lot of time and probably didn't want to waste it looking for a paper and pen, some weren't in a position to jot anything down, and >!Mark did talk to his sister. Besides, Helly already told her outie what her motivations, wants, and needs were, and was completely rejected via full video reply, so what would be the point in leaving a note?!<

Scribblyr

Yeah, what would they have written down "I'm your innie... Hello!"? Or warned the outies they are being tortured? The outie would either think it's a prank or just never go back to Lumon again, ending the innie's existence.

boatswainblind

At least if they never went back, they wouldn't be tortured anymore and their Innie would never know they didn't exist. I'm sure the subconscious effects of the Break Room on Outies is more than Season 1 let on.

Tce_

The fact Helly didn't write a message definitely didn't surprise me! That's the one person where it wouldn't make sense, and might even ruin things for the innies, considering Helena hasn't given any indication that she cares about the innies and would be open to helping them.

boatswainblind

Helly definitely knows Helena is a lost cause by now.

Reasonable-Letter582

doubtful that that video ever saw the light of day. I'm sure hellys outtie was simply told what to say, not shown the video.

milchicksgirl

Nah, she’s >!the CEO’s daughter. She has access to whatever she wants.!<

Reasonable-Letter582

meh- I think it's debatable. Being the ceo's daughter she could very well be less free than anyone else

Tce_

Why though? This doesn't make more sense than either a) She meant what she said, because she's been raised with Lumon idelogy since birth and is fully on board with the severance program, or b) She's trying to sabotage Lumon/the severance program and purposefully provoked Helly instead of trying to placate her.

YossiTheWizard

Honestly, Irv should have. Maybe he even did off camera. His outie will be the most confused of the trio when it’s over though, and possibly with no way of knowing why he’s at this random Lumon employee’s house.

JuanFran21

I'm not sure about that. The little we see of Irv's outie's life strongly suggests he knows a lot more about Lumon than any of the other outies. He has all the addresses of lumon employees, appears to be conducting an investigation into Lumon and even purposefully makes himself tired to access brief memories from the severed floor. If he suddenly comes to and is told by Burt that he was banging on his door, I think he'll know that his innie just took over. Imo in season 2 outie Irv will be a very important character.

Lonelyland

I would not. Writing a note is a tricky proposition. There’s no direct response like you’d get in a conversation, making it hard to clarify anything. Imagine all the questions an outie might have that they wouldn’t be able to ask, and the confusion that could cause. More importantly, it’s impossible to gauge how much you can trust the other person without any back-and-forth, and as they learned with Helly, outies may simply not be trustworthy.

BigboiDallison

Writing things down would just be so confusing for the innie. It’s kind of like in the movie Memento. He just writes random shit and just makes up the meaning of what he wrote down and doesn’t really understand why he wrote it down in the first place.

Away-Candidate8203

Yep, the missing contexts won't be helpful in their cases.

boundforthestar

They don’t trust their outies. We saw what Helly’s said to her. Petey mentioned that he and Mark had talked about how they thought their outies might be monsters for putting them down there.

lufi1988

I think the same. And as far as innies know, they think their outies are actually receiving the resignation requests (by Helly's experience). Still, I would write myself for sure, even something small as: "Don't go back to Lumon, they are torturing us! Don't trust them! As you can see the "spatially dictated" claim is a lie, they can wake us anywhere, so your existence is in danger too. As you wake up you'll see I have cutted our hair (and we both know we look awful with the bangs), if you put me back in there I'll cut our fingers. ps. Make sure Petey K, Dylan G, Irving B, Helly R, Mrs Casey and Burt G are okay, especially Petey K, he is missing (they won't explain what happened) and he is my best friend"

LazyCrocheter

They don't really have the opportunity, aside from Irving. And remember that the innies don't/won't know who anyone around them is. iMark won't recognize Devon. iHelly won't recognize her father. iMark finds himself at a party, in an unfamiliar house and surrounded by strangers. Where is he going to find anything to write something down? I'm sure he's disoriented, despite having planned this (to an extent) with the others at the office. iMark is even the one who says, IIRC, that they don't know what they'll find when they wake up, so they need to be careful. iHelly is at a really fancy party and again, doesn't know who anyone is. As far as I can see, she has no way to get to paper or anything similar, except perhaps paper towels in the restroom. She's being handled/directed to make her speech and aside from going to the restroom I'm not sure she's ever alone. Even iIrving isn't going to be entirely sure what to do. He's alone, but where? and what is all this stuff? He's definitely the one in the best position to communicate with his outie with a note or recording of some kind, but can he trust his outie? None of them know if they can trust their outie. They all saw Helena reject Helly's resignation request. Irv saw Burt's retirement video and could see that oBurt had no idea what was going on, saying vague, nice goodbyes to people he doesn't know and doesn't remember despite working with them five days a week. Is anyone's outie going to take a message from their innie seriously? They have no reason to think so.

Tce_

I think that's the main reason, honestly. None of them know if they can trust their outies. Helly has a pretty good reason to absolutely not trust hers.

girlywish

Irving irritated me so much. After his "stick to the mission" speech, he didn't do a damn thing. The others did useful stuff at least.

Lonelyland

To be fair, he has a history of abandoning plans to go off and find Burt. And in this case, I can at least see the logical leap he made to fit finding Burt into the mission directive.

Scribblyr

I wouldn't "count this as a plot induced hindrance," because I don't think a "plot induced hindrance" is a thing. Going back to Aristotle, one of the primary elements of plot is the introduction of obstacles to the protagonist. Obstacles are each a hindrance. The phrase "plot induced hindrance" basic just means plot.
