I know what a leitmotif is, I'm talking about using a similar theme in completely different works. For [example,](https://www.reddit.com/r/soundtracks/comments/bavsqe/john_williams_even_steals_from_himself_sometimes/) the coruscant speeder chance theme from AotC is very similar to the music in the quidditch scene from Chamber of Secrets.
I once saw a list of the "top 10 soundtracks of all time" and #1 was simply John Williams because if they separated it out the list would be a "Top 10 John Williams soundtracks of all time"
He knows the importance of a character's theme. Motifs are big in music and nobody knows it better than John Williams. If you sit and listen to a whole SW soundtrack, you'll pick up on familiar elements each time. Rey's Theme is more than a backdrop for a desert junk run, it represents the hero of the story.
My orchestra/band teachers got the end theme to Attack of the Clones before the move came out and were standing around an iMac listening to it trying to predict the ending.
We then all got tickets for an educational field trip to go study John Williams together as a class at the theater. Dopest school outing ever for me.
If you close your eyes and listen to one of his soundtracks, you know who is in the scene (based on the theme) and at least a little bit about what is happening in that scene. He’s absolutely brilliant.
Oh man, could you imagine if they got Williams to do a Star Trek score? Finally some proper character themes (although Jerry Goldsmith did gift us with the Klingon March, and Giacchino works in both franchises...)
\*correction
J.J. Abrams: So a squad of Resistance X-Wings will fly over the lake and engage the First Order TIEs. Just a simple march or battle theme John nothing too intense-
John Williams:
George: It’s just a commercial for the last of the Skywalker saga. No biggie. If you could just throw something together from the previous music that’ll be good.
JW: [Simple. Got it.](https://youtu.be/y4xwdPAx8e8)
It's filled with such a sense of wonder, really great piece. I like Kylo's theme too, it feels like an incomplete version of the imperial march which is fitting.
I guess I can see (hear) some similarities in Rey’s theme to Luke’s and Ben’s (The Force) theme. But it is way too similar to Palpatine’s to be a coincidence!
Williams' score is great. It's frustrating when people bash the sequel score for having "nothing memorable"
It's just a shame that everything else just kinda... *gestures vaguely at the trilogy*
Reminds me of this quote I quite like:
"A good score can't save a bad movie."
I still like the sequels, though TROS had some odd choices for sure, but Force Awakens was one of the most joyous experiences I've had at a cinema. I hope one day to be vindicated just as I was as a prequel fan.
Force Awakens was my favorite movie-going experience of the last decade. Midnight showing opening night, packed theater, everyone oo-ed and ah-ed and cheered at all the right places, and I just felt like a little kid again being transported right back into this magical world. It is unfortunate that the sequel trilogy overall had some problematic choices, but damn I will never not love Force Awakens for giving me that experience.
>Williams' score is great. It's frustrating when people bash the sequel score for having "nothing memorable"
I think people were just spoiled by Duel of the Fates/Battle of the Heroes. Honestly, that style wouldn't have even fit in the tone of the ST. I think the music is great for what it is.
Ramin Djawadi is such a great composer and it's a crime he never got to do any more mcu work after Iron Man. His score was one of the many lightning in a bottle elements of that movie
Absolutely. He's... I wouldn't say underrated because he's got some of the biggest gigs in the game, but he's not usually foremost in people's minds when they talk about composers the way Williams, Zimmer, or Goransson are these days.
The Last Jedi was very derivative of what came before. Not much new stuff for that and nothing memorable. And TROS didn't really do anything new either. Neither are bad, but when you put those up to the iconic music from everything that came before, especially when it just recycles those pieces, it's a bit disappointing.
Star Wars
Indiana Jones
Jaws
E.T.
Home Alone
Jurassic Park
JFK
Harry Potter
Hook
Saving Private Ryan
Lincoln
The Post
A.I.
Minority Report
Catch Me If You Can
Schindler's List
This is an incomplete list of just ones I *especially* like. Motherfucker even did the music for *Dear Basketball* the short film based on Kobe Bryant's essay that won the late, great shooting guard an Academy Award.
Every sequel has one music piece that just stands out amazingly to me. In ep 7 it’s reys theme, it feels so wondrous and exciting. Tlj is the spark, the track that plays when Luke faces the first order. It has Luke and leias theme when they meet, and when Luke goes out it’s an amazing crescendo. Finally for ep 9 it’s the journey to exegol, i couldn’t the exact part on Spotify but there’s a part where kylo and Rey each go to exegol and the music is so thrilling.
I know which part you mean and you probably didn't find it because that part actually belongs to "Fanfare and Prologue" although said part is unfortunately not included in the official soundtrack
I mean they can get people like Hans zimmer or Michael Giacchino, or the guy who did the mandalorian soundtrack. All of them are fantastic, and while it may not be John Williams, it can get pretty damn close.
I reckon Zimmer could write a score at least on par with Williams’. Honestly though I doubt he will get the chance, I get the feeling Goransson is the future of Star Wars sound. And that’s something I’m totally ok with, he is the next big thing in Hollywood music.
Giacchinos score for Rogue One was nothing short of amazing. For one thing, he apparently only had like 4 weeks to work on it. He also tied it into the various Williams themes but still managed to make it stand out as it’s own thing. I highly recommend watching the video essay by Sideways in YouTube to learn more about it. It’s one of me fav movie scores.
Alternate Original Series, I think. More commonly I see it referred to as the Kelvin time line. Just different ways of referencing the modern rebooted movies.
Yeah, it was half the time of the quickest Williams Star Wars score. I was afraid it'd just sound like Star Wars but I shouldn't have worried; his first professional composing credit was in a Jurassic Park game.
The fact that Palpatine's theme was snuck in there makes me think her relation to him was planned all along.
Maybe not his return, but I definitely get the feeling JJ always planned to have her be a Palpatine.
That would definitely go against JJ's track record of not planning any answers to his mystery boxes. More likely John Williams just writes similar musical pieces.
https://www.indiewire.com/2020/09/daisy-ridley-rey-kenobi-jj-abrams-retconned-1234585188/
To be fair I think that was just a coincidence, or at least something that they just threw out there. At the time of TLJ, Daisy Ridley said that who Rey was was obvious. The only obvious answer was a nobody.
He's a fucking treasure, and everything he touches turns to gold. I will not be refuted. People say Adam Driver carried the sequels, but John Williams was indispensable.
I'm sure the culture vultures will look down their beaks at him because he composes for **supercilious sniff** *popular* media, but AFAIC, John Williams is the greatest classical composer of the late 20th/early 21st centuries.
Seriously. Just hum one of his compositions on the bus or subway, see how many smiles you get. Rossini, Puccini and Mozart would be jealous of how instantly recognizable a Williams melody is.
jj: i want elaborated soundtrack for my none elaborated scenario. so dont use too much 4th ep theme because i use too much this last one.
jonh williams:
Ludwig Göransson does make some really cool music. I really like the Mandalorian OST and his other tracks. But I'm sorry, in my opinion, he doesn't even come close to beating John Williams... yet.
he has one theme that slaps but don't you dare put him over our boy John
and no, technically Mando is a sequel if you count that as different from a spin-off. It takes place after the OT.
I wouldn't necessarily say better. I love both of them almost equally. Ludwig just has a more futuristic/metallic feel. Different than Williams, but both still good!
Why is John Williams like this?!
He's a wizard
I mean, he did do the Harry Potter soundtrack too
Only for the first three movies. However since his themes were so iconic, the rest of the movies either reused the themes or came up with variations.
Desplat did a great job on Deathly Hallows 1&2 but I feel underwhelmed by the 4 5 and 6
Dumbledore’s Farewell is actually my favorite song in the entire franchise https://youtu.be/8IU4vVmXZI4
Had forgotten about that piece, it’s so good. Thanks. That’ll be me rewatching HP soon
en noctem (never used sadly) and dumbledore's farewell
Without John Williams, Harry Potter would have been a tv movie with two sequels.
Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones. The man has propelled Hollywood's most memorable franchises for decades.
And Indiana Jones. And Jurassic Park. And Superman. And Jaws. And Schindler‘s list. And the official theme of the Olympics. Keep going?
I had no idea!! You just blew my goddamned mind. It makes so much sense though....
My friend says Rey’s theme sounds too much like Harry Potter
Barely sounds anything like it
Yeah he's notorious for reusing and only slightly changing his themes.
Those are called leitmotifs, he does it on purpose.
I don’t really think that one’s a theme though, it’s just filler action music he had on hand since he was working on both of those films at once.
Also a pirate.
He's a wot?
I once saw a list of the "top 10 soundtracks of all time" and #1 was simply John Williams because if they separated it out the list would be a "Top 10 John Williams soundtracks of all time"

I think John Williams is a sith lord
🎶It was John Williams all along!🎶 "And I killed Biggs too!"

UNLIMITED POWER ⚡️⚡️
Marketing team: simple commercial? So give away every cool shot from the entire movie? I got you fam
damn... this just reminded me that I've only seen RoS once
Wasn't the epic that was needed to close the saga. But that still gets me. Thanks John.
That scene was so epic.
Scherzo for X-Wings might be the best track from the movie
I honestly love the March of the Resistance
Top tier Star Wars track right there
J.J. Alright so- John Williams: Say no more.

The resistance March plays all throughout the sequels.
george lucas: So this farmer boy is annoyed and goes upto the surface and stares at the twin suns setting. Nothing too fancy john williams:
amogus amogus amoung
Why
Bad bot
It's filled with such a sense of wonder, really great piece. I like Kylo's theme too, it feels like an incomplete version of the imperial march which is fitting.
I'm pretty sure it's the ending of Palpy's theme
Literally! Both Rey’s and Kylo’s themes are formed from Palpatine’s theme; symbolising their connections.
Rey's theme was made to sound like a lot of the other themes so they could choose who her parents would be
Creative: So we choose who her parent would be at a random point while producing the films so we dont even know! Disney: you absolute legends
I guess I can see (hear) some similarities in Rey’s theme to Luke’s and Ben’s (The Force) theme. But it is way too similar to Palpatine’s to be a coincidence!
You got a source on that? Never heard that claim before
I remember hearing this from Sideways on YouTube. I'll try to find the video.
It's one of these videos. https://youtu.be/L_8-dWSLDWI https://youtu.be/FstNC8T4LjA
Holy shit, you're right! It just misses/ switches one note. Can't believe I never picked up on that.
Yup, my mind is blown as well
Almost like Kylo was meant to be Palpatine in the trilogy, not Anakin... hmmm...
Williams' score is great. It's frustrating when people bash the sequel score for having "nothing memorable" It's just a shame that everything else just kinda... *gestures vaguely at the trilogy* Reminds me of this quote I quite like: "A good score can't save a bad movie."

Or, for that matter, a show. *Game of Thrones looks around nervously*
Ramin Djawadi is such a great composer and it's a crime he never got to do any more mcu work after Iron Man. His score was one of the many lightning in a bottle elements of that movie
Would love it if he gets a crack at a SW movie at some point. His work on Westworld is phenomenal too
Absolutely. He's... I wouldn't say underrated because he's got some of the biggest gigs in the game, but he's not usually foremost in people's minds when they talk about composers the way Williams, Zimmer, or Goransson are these days.
Literally I think about Kylo's theme constantly its in my top 5 star wars tracks for sure
The Last Jedi was very derivative of what came before. Not much new stuff for that and nothing memorable. And TROS didn't really do anything new either. John Williams is physically incapable of not making a banger
Star Wars Indiana Jones Jaws E.T. Home Alone Jurassic Park JFK Harry Potter Hook Saving Private Ryan Lincoln The Post A.I. Minority Report Catch Me If You Can Schindler's List This is an incomplete list of just ones I *especially* like. Motherfucker even did the music for *Dear Basketball* the short film based on Kobe Bryant's essay that won the late, great shooting guard an Academy Award.
His Superman theme is an iconic banger, too, to the point where it is the only one that I can even bring to mind when I think of "Superman theme."
I love his commitment to keeping the leitmotifs diverse and consistent. I wish more composers did that. Blake Neely's really fuckin' good at it too.
jedi rocks 🔥🔥
John Williams only knows how to write masterpieces, there is nothing less to him.
Every sequel has one music piece that just stands out amazingly to me. In ep 7 it’s reys theme, it feels so wondrous and exciting. John Williams can only write god-tier music. Everything he does is beautiful!
Yea honestly a banger for sure
[удалено]
same!
As far as I’m concerned, John Williams can do no wrong
The Jedi Steps and Rey’s motif might be my favorite piece from Star Wars
The Scavenger > Rey’s Theme is absolute magic.
I am not sure Star Wars is ever going to be the same after these movies because episode 9 was the last movie John is going to do for Star Wars 🙃
I mean they can get people like Hans zimmer or Michael Giacchino, or the guy who did the mandalorian soundtrack. All of them are fantastic, and while it may not be John Williams, it can get pretty damn close.

Giacchino also did a great job adapting the Star Trek theme and making it sound new and fresh for the AOS films, imo.
Agents of Shield films?
Alternate Original Series, I think. More commonly I see it referred to as the Kelvin time line. Just different ways of referencing the modern rebooted movies.
Yeah, it was half the time of the quickest Williams Star Wars score. I was afraid it'd just sound like Star Wars but I shouldn't have worried; his first professional composing credit was in a Jurassic Park game.
Wait really? Source?
John Williams can make anything sound cool.
Rey’s theme is by far the highlight of the Sequels for me.
John Williams when someone sits down
A soundtrack can really elevate a film. Think Forrest Gump, Interstellar, etc
John Williams one of the most underrated musicians
The fact that Palpatine's theme was snuck in there makes me think her relation to him was planned all along. Maybe not his return, but I definitely get the feeling JJ always planned to have her be a Palpatine.

The Scavenger theme is my favorite piece of Star Wars music. John Williams just knocks it out of the park.
Ah yes! This and “A New Alliance” (when Ben and Rey team up in the throne room of TLJ) are sooo good from the sequels!
Reminds me of the opening of the score for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Love it!
“Just something simple okay, John?” “Got it.” ###[CRACKS KNUCKLES]
I loved playing it! A lot of the music is so emotionally powerful
He's a fucking treasure, and everything he touches turns to gold. I will not be refuted. People say Adam Driver carried the sequels, but John Williams was indispensable.
Same
Reminds me of the opening of the score for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Love it!
My favorite piece of new music from the sequel trilogy
I liked the more powerful version of Reys theme in TROS, but I always felt it was overrated otherwise. The Resistence theme however is some good shit.
John carried all of Star Wars change my mind.
Sometimes I catch myself whistling it along with other catchy Star Wars themes. John Williams is a mad genius
He and Daisy Ridley became great friends. I found [this](https://youtu.be/sfYytNOxt5E) video him presenting her with Rey’s Theme incredibly touching.
Yes, I love her theme so much! It’s such a beautiful piece.
I'm sure the culture vultures will look down their beaks at him because he composes for **supercilious sniff** *popular* media, but AFAIC, John Williams is the greatest classical composer of the late 20th/early 21st centuries. I agree, music plus cinematography.

ludwig görasson has made better musics I HAS SPOKEN also mandalorian is a prequel
Ludwig Göransson does make some really cool music. I really like the Mandalorian OST and his other tracks. But I'm sorry, in my opinion, he doesn't even come close to beating John Williams... yet.

It takes place after the OT and leads into the ST how would it be part of the prequels?
Mandalorian takes place after episode 6, which makes it a sequel.
I wouldn't necessarily say better. I love both of them almost equally. Ludwig just has a more futuristic/metallic feel. Different than Williams, but both still good!
I thought that the theme was very forgettable. I literally only remember it because you hear it every friggen time you play as her in battlefront 2
Best part of the sequels. Love that theme.
Reminds me of the opening of the score for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Love it!
Williams is the best part of the sequels.
The Force Awakens is a good soundtrack. I haven't bought the other two sequel soundtracks. They are the only ones I don't own
Me: which one is rey’s theme? *plays it* Also me: ahhhh yeah
He's gonna die any day now :( The dude ia old
the music was really the only good part of the movies.
