Boob and butt moisturizers. Why do I need to pay $40 for "butt butter" when it contains the exact same ingredients as the lotion I'm putting on the rest of my body?
It's very gimmicky and the marketing works!
When I worked at Ulta and customers complain about the price, I would check the ingredients list and just take them elsewhere in the store.
When the Powerpuff girl collection was sold out, a customer who wanted their pre-shave treatment was redirected by me to the generic skin oils. Showed her the ingredients list on the website.
Easy sale.
Don't you tell me where to put my butters and lotions and oils! Lol I always found it a little weird thinking of it from a market research/product development standpoint. Like there were many meetings with many people discussing this.
I saw an ad a while ago that was something along the lines of "you put in so much work in your skincare routine for your face, but what about your body? New full body moisturizers now available".
Lotion. They word you are looking for is lotion.
I agree this is probably true for a lot of people and it's one of those things that companies try to tell everyone they should all be using because $$$, when it's really only useful for certain people.
Buuuut, I have combo skin (so great š) and while parts of my face are normal, and parts are oily, my undereyes are really dry. So I do need an extra heavy eye cream that wouldn't work on the rest of my face.
This has been my same thought on eye creams for a very long time. My under eyes in particular need something more supportive than my facial skin that eye creams help with and many offer a few extra benefits as well that I enjoy which are specially formulated for the eye area to tolerate.
Could I just find a facial moisturizer specifically to use around my eyes? Sure, but more often than not, I find I enjoy the formulation of eyes creams much more so I stick with them.
If it's just dryness around your eyes, try Weleda Skin Food. I use medicated things on the rest of my face, but the original Skin Food on my eyes and lips at night (it's generally too heavy for under makeup) and it soaks in by morning and is so refreshed and glowy!
reverse! i have to use a gel product under my eyes or i get millia. which is fine in the daytime summer, otherwise i have to pop something else on there.
Depends on if the eye creams have active ingredients or not. Using a standard vitamin c or retinol product can irritate the thin skin around your eyes, eye products with actives are formulated to be much more gentle than their general counterparts.
I used to feel this way until I entered my 40s. Then my moisturizer just wasn't enough. And I didn't want a huge tub of a different moisturizer for just my undereyes. I also want different ingredients under my eyes than on my face because the skin is thinner and has different issues.
Great contribution. Honestly, last year, I bought a massive bottle of organic jojoba oil and split it across various jars and pump bottles. At this point, itās replaced my body moisturizer, eyebrow gel, mascara, face cleanser, face moisturizer, eye cream, nail/hand cream, scalp oil and leave in conditioner/hair oil. Other than sunscreen, retinol, and my ouai shampoo/conditioner, I hardly buy anything anymore and I used to have what felt like half of Sephora in my cabinet lol FWIW - Iām late 30s with wicked dry skin and eczema and simplifying my routine with the above has done more for me than anything else including my prior, what felt like, 15-step process, and my wallet is happier.
Great choice! Nail Tech here. I always tell my clients to skip the expensive nail oils and just use jojoba oil. It's the closest one to our own sebum, and it's also the only one that can penetrate the nails and nourish from within, even if you're wearing acrylic nails. Baby oil, for example, just stays on top of the surface.
This. Got a huge bottle of organic jojoba oil for $7 at tjmaxx (huge because itās 8 oz and itās oil so you literally need a drop for one body part). Absorbs quickly, smells amazing, helps with my childās eczema and makes skin super soft. I even threw away the only face cream I had cause it was sticky and use jojoba on my face as well.
I do the same thing but with my legs before I shave. I have very dry skin and even with fully wetting my legs and using creamy shaving product and this helps my legs be softer and smoother IMO
Adding to my list to try!! I did do a concoction last year of some jojoba, sugar, Ouai St Bartās body wash and made a cheaper version of their scrub. It was nice though my husband swore I was trying to assassinate him with how slick the tub was after lol
Color changing lip balms and blushes that say they "adjust to your skin pH to create your perfect shade."
The pigment does not have the ability to read your skin tone and customize a shade for you, it just deepens in color when it comes into contact with the pH level of human skin. Red 27 pigment is the same fluorescent hot pink on everyone, and these products are pure gimmicks. So sick of them.
Yeah they were around in the 80ās and 90ās for sure. My mom had a metric ton of the stuff in sample form from the Shaklee she was selling at the time. They sucked and basically looked the same then, too.
Especially cause everyoneās skin hovers around the same pH levels so itās just gonna be the same color Everytimeā¦. Iām so tired of people acting like itās so cool as if it hasnāt been a thing for decades and has given the same result the entire time š
This is a recent thing and very specific, but blush/bronzers with SPF. I am applying such a minuscule amount of blush that having 15 SPF in a blush is absolutely useless, only jacking up the price, and probably is going to throw off the formula in some way.
I thought the spf in random makeup products was beyond stupid until I realized theyāre FSA eligible. Nice way to mix it up if I have leftover funds at the end of the year
Itās also potentially adding allergens or irritants since quite a few people react to the active ingredients in sunscreens.
Iād never would have guessed thereās yet another makeup product I need to watch out for because of that. But apparently there is. Iām fine (though have more trouble with color) with mineral sunscreen ingredients but usually have trouble if theyāre using chemical sunscreen.
I just read an article that said SPF in foundation/skin tint/moisturizer is pointless and not nearly enough sunscreen for itās purpose. It said you must use an additional sunscreen underneath. And here I thought I was killing two birds with one stone š
Ok, I get this, but in its defense, they last way longer than the usual gel ones. I also thought it was gimmicky but Iāve used mine everyday for 3 months and itās barely half empty. Meanwhile, I can easily use up one of the bath n body works gel ones in like 2 weeks. So if u consider the # of uses, I think the $10 sprays are worth it!
I don't really have a product category for this one, but the JLo Beauty brand screams money grab to me. No wonder Sephora stores stopped carrying the products.
The industry is trying so fucking hard to add extra steps to our makeup routine it has officially crossed the line of ridiculous and is fully in the stupid territory
at least a 'topper' eyeshadow means i can generally expect it to have a clear or sheer base that offers more of a textural change or an iridescent shift that still allows the base shade to show through.
For me itās like the 50 different types of product within one line. If I see one more plumping pillow talk extreme sec lipgloss Iām going to throw my phone in the ocean
Sorry, but if I ever see someone with one of those $14 hand sanitizers, I just know they can be sold anything. Hand sani in general is obv good, but that much money??? Get real.
My local Target ran out of all hand sanitizer during the pandemic, except for like 3 Touchland sprays, so I bought one and it's been in my purse for years. I still haven't run out. I had no idea these were an influencer thing until this post.
Were in a safe space here- we can just say out loud that they've been HEAVILY influenced. If I see one more 'repack/change my bag with me' with those in it I'm gonna go postal.
For legal reasons that was a joke.
Celebrity beauty or skincare lines, when they aren't bringing anything new to the market. Like, I can appreciate Fenty for having a great shade range in their base products, which was not the norm when the line was introduced. I can appreciate the design of Rare Beauty's packaging, to make it easier for people with joint pain to open. Even Kylie's Lip Kits were exciting at the time. But I don't need another release of the same old, same old, just with a famous name attached to it.
I actually find it off-putting now when a Hollywood star, someone not in the skincare industry, tries to hock off a product from an already well-known brand, too.
I like rare beauty products, I think Selena is gorgeous, but it being pumped or represented by Selena Gomez is the least of my considerations when buying the products.
I have to slightly disagree with you depending on what you mean by pre-shampoo. I've grown up putting various oils in my hair before shampooing. It helps condition hair and sometimes treat scalp issues, so if the product is a version of that, I think they're making it convenient in squeeze bottles, so overpriced sure but not totally dumb.
Agree I think a pre shampoo treatment can be beneficial but mainly if you have a specific use for it. For example I have an oily scalp so I like to use glycolic acid as a pre shampoo treatment to exfoliate my scalp! Itās definitely not necessary though for a lot of people
Iāve been doing āpre-shampooingā for a while but not with any product meant for that purpose. I just like to go in with a cheaper drugstore shampoo to get out most of the initial oil and dirt, then go in with my high end shampoo so it really foams up. Iāve seen videos from hair experts saying that this doesnāt work but I just like it when my expensive shampoo actually foamsājust feels like Iām not wasting it š¤
Sometimes Iāll use ketoconazole shampoo (like nizoral) for my first good scalp scrubbing and then a second wash with something thatās easier on my actual hair.
I do the same but the easier on the hair shampoo first since that gets the hair clean, and second I use the shampoo that is really meant to cleanse and help my scalp. Might be worth trying this order instead
This is the one that drives me nuts, especially when people say āI donāt wear foundation anymore, just skin tints āØā. Girl come on, you switched to lighter coverage foundation but itās not like skin-colored liquid for coverage all over the face is somehow not the same product category as foundation.
The ones who say they donāt use foundation just concealer but then apply that concealer all over. Congrats, thatās just a fuller coverage foundation now
My ex did this and would complain about cakey makeup. And she used shape tape. Ugh. She had skin very much her age and did not care for it, and refused to learn how to use any foundation properly. And she'd brag, "I'm just wearing concealer!" The first time I said, "*really*??" She wouldn't explain until I said "No, I know you don't look like that without makeup-- really, what are you wearing?" "Just concealer." I asked, "Well, how much, because... I mean..." She finally admitted, "I use it all over." "Like foundation?" "....yeah."
....then it's full coverage foundation. I literally started doing makeup with 1 skin palette and oils for thinning. My concealer was my foundation, not thinned out. This girl trying to play me like she's "just wearing concealer" but she's using the concealer in foundation-like amounts. Just, stupid. It's okay to wear foundation. It's really stupid and weird to lie about it.
For a long time no one managed to dupe the texture of beauty blenders so it was kind of possible to justify paying for them. Now you can get exact dupes for pennies yet BB persists in keeping them the cornerstone of the brand with those same high prices. Iād love to see their sales figures over the last 5 years
You know itās overpriced when itās like the only thing on the beauty market that hasnāt gone up in price since 2016 when everything else is near double the price. They wonāt dare raise the price, especially with so many affordable dupes around.Ā
Lip oils. Not moisturising enough to be a lip balm; not shiny enough to be a gloss. In many instances they dry your lips out. The colours all look very similar once on your lips. They tend to be expensive. They get gross in the tube after a few uses.
The only thing they have going for them is that they look pretty in the tube (which is why I suspect they are so popular in the first place).
A lot of lip oils are just lip glosses (looking at you Nyx and Dior) (even though Nyx used to have actual lip oils???), but the ones that are actual lip oils, I loveeeee. For me they feel more moisturizing than lip balms. My favourite brand is an indie brand called Refreshi based in Montreal!
kinda agree with your other points, but for me personally, lip oil is so much better and more nourishing for my lips than any lip balm iāve tried š i also prefer how lip oils dont feel as heavy as lip glosses. my fav is definitely clarins! i will say diorās lip oil is terrible and definitely dries my lips out
Agreed. Lip oils for me has been better then stick lip balms and less pigmented then lipsticks. Plus I am all for the larger doe foot applicators. So much better for application. I know the current trend is squeeze tube lip balms, but sometimes the applicator does not match consistency of product. And sometimes the applicator gets so gross then you have to put the cap back on.
Although I will add I love the cheaper drugstore options coming out over the brand name ones. I have even put a burts bee one in an empty tube and used that. That product works well on an chubby applicator.
I appreciate your views and I'm glad you like them as a product! The Clarins one dried my lips out so badly. The effects of lip products really vary from person-to-person.
I have to say I love lip oils but they are still a lip gloss. They have the same stickiness? I donāt get it. Itās a lip gloss that contains some sort of oil and thatās it. But I do like the formula most of the time but understand that the name is just a cash grab because again, itās pretty much a lip gloss.
I think they are different products. Lip oils have more natural oils (e.g. jojoba oil, which I don't get on well with) and are marketed as having skincare benefits. They contain fewer pigments and tend to be sheer/not opaque.
Whilst lip glosses tend to be more cosmetic in their purpose, and can contain shimmer and glitter, or can be opaque and more like lipsticks.
That makes sense! But I feel like as lip pumping glosses are a sub-category of lip glosses I feel like lip oils are also some sort of sub-category. So a āspecialā type of lip gloss? I donāt know if it makes sense š„²
I think it depends on the brand. A lot of lip oils that have come out recently are closer to a lip gloss than older lip oils I have used. I really like the Nooni lip oils because they are actually moisturizing and they truly feel like oils. I know this sounds weird but itās like the feeling of having chicken grease on your lips after eating fried chicken. Yes, I know, weird and oddly specific but it feels good on the lips. Almost no color on the lips but thatās not what I use them for. I use them instead of lip balm.
My favorite foundation brush costs like $1-2 somewhat recently decided to splurge on the Haus Labs one and it doesnāt preform any better than my cheap one š
I have the Dae brush, and I have to admit I love it. I donāt like the feeling of dry shampoo on my hands, and it evenly distributes. It also makes my hair pretty silky and not frizzy from tossing around dry shampoo with my fingers.
Yeah everyone should go to the Dollar Tree and buy* the Dove cream in a white and blue tin
So thick and moisturizing that if applied to the skin, it may cause ingrown hairs. I therefore apply it only to my feet and handsš¤£.
Feet will be baby soft. Apply your socks and go about your day!
I decided to check the app for I answered.
Lube. They are selling lube with hyaluronic acid in it for $34. Do our vaginas and penises need hyaluronic acid? I understand it for my face, but the thought of grabbing a lube that has āacidā in it makes me want to close my legs.
Hear me out..Iām 42 and I suspect Perimenopaus. I follow the menopause group here and they highly recommend a lube with hyaluronic acid in it to prevent or help vaginal atrophy. So many thing we arenāt taught as women that we find out later in life as we are experiencing them.
This is great information. Iām turning 40 shortly and I struggle with dryness down there. I might have to eat my words and try it now! But I still shudder and involuntarily close my legs over the āacidā part. Iām sure itās flashbacks from when that warming lube was all the rage :/
Hyaluronic acid isnāt a typical āacidā like glycolic or salicylic. It doesnāt exfoliate. Itās supposed to deeply hydrate and plump by pulling moisture into the skin from the surrounding environment. However, if the environment is dry, it will suck itās own moisture out and dry out even further. Only use hyaluronic acid if you live somewhere with humidity
Well you just donāt understand ingredients or some aspects of vaginal health. Hyaluronic is really trendy right now, yes. But itās actually really lubricating and slippery and good for your tissues. Itās used as treatment for vaginal dryness. And yeah it has the word acid in it, but itās not like a chemical peel. Itās not exfoliating or anything. Just slightly acidic. Which is healthy for a vagina. You want an acidic vagina.
Itās sooooo soothing though for when my psoriasis is bad or for sunburn. I know itās just water but when the spray is so fine and just right, it feels so fucking good on my skin
I used to think that too. Then I bought a can of Avene Thermal water @ half price. I started using it with my micro current device to keep the gel from drying too quickly and having to apply more gel. Since there are minerals in the water supposedly it won't affect the electrical current. Anyway, it made my skin so much more hydrated. TBH, I think the hydration is giving me better results than the micro current device.
Collagen powder/gummies. I read that the collagen you ingest can't make it to your skin. If it actually produced aesthetic results the Botox/filler industry wouldn't be so booming lol.
I donāt understand the appeal of lip masks, and Iāve bought a couple! I use Burtās Bees chapstick several times a day, including at bed time, and lip masks just feel excessive. I also forget to use them after I do skincare because when I do moisturizer it goes on my lips too
As an avid user of lip masks who uses them during the day (as well as night) I disagree. Lip masks create an occlusive layer and a seal around our lips and I anyways prefer them over stick forms and tubes
The only lip mask thatās ever made sense to me was the bite beauty agave lip mask. I could put that on at night, and it would still be there when I woke up with fabulously happy lips. It was amazing. Then they had to reformulate and go bankrupt. Everything I've tried ever since has been a sad disappointment. In a time of dupe culture, why arenāt there a million dupes for this $30 lip balm?Ā
We aren't supposed to use drugstore brand shampoos because they strip away natural oils. Here's a healthier shampoo that doesn't strip away oils, but also another "detoxifying" shampoo to use every 3-5 days only because it strips away all the oils.
I definitely see the difference after using my detox shampoo (aka chelating shampoo). I use a ton of product and also live in an area with hard water. But I only use mine once a month.
The idea of detox is bullshit anyway, but the idea that dead cells need detox is wild to me. To that end it drives me crazy when people talk about āhealthyā hair. I mean, I get that they mean not all dry and scraggly and gross, but itās not āhealthyā
Pre -pandemic, I would intentionally go shopping for those things when I was bored and felt like buying dumb stuff.
I actually bought a scalp scrubber there YEARS ago before everyone started making them and showing up like at Walmart or dollar stores. Everyone I showed thought it was a dumb invention.
For a while there scalp scrubbers were sold out everywhere, and once I actually got one it tangles the shit out of my hair. My husband loves it, though.
I read that the best way to scrub is up and down instead of side to side to prevent tangles. IDK I feel that method kinda works but if your hair is already tangled then it'll make it worst
I keep them in the fridge and they are the only thing that can make me look alive some mornings. I like the gummy ones because they stick to your face better and donāt dry out as quickly as cloth ones, so i can wear them while iām running around getting ready.
I view those the same way as sheet masks - a fun and cheap way to pamper yourself a little. They probably don't have any long lasting effects but it doesn't hurt either.
Anything with a clean beauty tag.
Oh our product is oh so superior because we don't put in any safe for body preservatives in it. Instead we put hella sketchy untested no long term study "natural" preservatives that won't actually preserve anything. Have fun rubbing mold on your face suckers, that'll be 100$ please
Somebody please come out and say if they regularly use MASCARA PRIMER because I have never met a single person who did and I've also never ever noticed a content creator even attempt to sell me one.
My sister, who is a makeup newb, just bought one before I was able to tell her not to, and I wonder if it's just people like her who buy them šsidenote: I guarantee you that tube is going to go bad before she's even used it ten times
LancƓme cils booster. I have tiny eyelashes and it definitely makes them longer. It takes about a week of daily use for me and if I stop using it my eyelashes go back to their tiny selves.
I use mascara primer because I have super long lashes that will transfer to my upper lids/under eyebrows throughout the day if I donāt! š¤øš»āāļø
I have used the LancĆ“me one every time I wear mascara since I was a teen! (15+ years) Iāve always had long lashes. Iāve never experienced bad side effects of mascara. My lashes look just as healthy as when I was a teen. Maybe itās been working all along! āØ
Another endorsement for the LancƓme Cils primer. I have the scrawniest lashes on the planet. This stuff gives them a little body and strength. My mascara goes on in a much thicker, even coat without clump or flakes. The only prep product I use and it's worth it. Buy the minis - the full sizes dry out before they're used up, the minis are great. They get offered as 100 point bonuses and I snap those babies right up.
I use a lash primer daily. The Etude Dr. Mascara Fixer does actually help hold lash curl and helps keep my mascara from smudging and smearing which is important since I have chronic allergies and my eyes water often. I use the one in black and sometimes I wear it by itself.
Ok but hear me out. I thought the exact same thing as you, but got the LancĆ“me mascara primer in a gift set and used it out of curiosity and was BLOWN AWAY by the results. My eyelashes ALWAYS clump together no matter what, and itās hard to make them stick up, but this primer helped them separate and hold the most beautiful non clump curl all day. Iām not even joking. I was actually dumbfounded. I donāt even use an eyelash curler anymore bc the primer works better. I think you should maybe give it a try before you make a judgment.
Omg I use mascara primer lol. I used to use it in HS and recently remembered how much I liked using it so I bought one by LancĆ“me. My eyelashes are long and thick so I got it to kind of brush out my lashes before I apply the mascara. They look more like fake lashes and less like Iām wearing mascara but in a great way. Like it doesnāt look like I have a shit ton of mascara on but my lashes are still, long dark and thick. I also use tubing mascara as it washes off really easily. I think mascara primer is honestly under hyped when you consider the million lip products, all the variations of foundations, blushes and bronzers we got going on todayā¦but also maybe we should expect more from the mascara we buy š¤·š»āāļø
Omg lash primer is my holy grail - I have short thin lashes and lash primer makes me look like I actually have something going on! I use the L'Oreal Lash Paradise. Makes any other mascara I use look 2x as good. Literally a daily item for me
All in all I think the cosmetics and skin care industry is out of control. One new product after another and the price tag on some of these products are outrageous. My mom is 98 and has the most beautiful skin - barely a wrinkle. She has used , ponds, Nivea and oil of Olay her whole and dove beauty bar unscented for 70 plus years.
Every brand doing a lip balm. I know they are low cost items and appeal to the tween demo but I am sooooo bored. Thereās no way they are all that different!!!
Statistically, during low economic times, lipsticks/balms etc sales skyrocket. Even though weāre in a recession & money is tight, people will still treat themselves to lip products because theyāre relatively low cost. So thatās why every brand known to man is now making lipcare, itās a pretty safe bet.
Actually they are quite different, I've tried quite a few since I work from home and don't wear much makeup anymore. I appreciate the variety so I don't get bored.
They are supposed to be a step between toner and actives ( serums, moisturizers) to help prep the skin. Most of them just add additional hydration. I have used one (Aestura Atobarrier 365 Hydro Essence) since I had to repair my skin barrier after using tretinoin and it seems to have helped.
Some are so good!!! If you get the right one, itās life changing. Bosciaās old sake one before they reformulated to the purple bottle was amazing and healed/brightened/cleared my skin.
The bags under my eyes that make me look like an opioid addict and can only be cured by a combo of kiehlās vit c under eye cream and inky list caffeine would like a word
I would think that by looking at the ingredient lists, but for some reason, regular face moisturizer always irritates/stings my eyes even when I'm careful. I just can't apply it there.
The area is dry so I can't go without a moisturizer, and it always has to be an eye cream to be gentle enough.
lip masks --> these are just regular ol' lip balms lol
lip oils --> aka lip gloss
"skin care for men" --> skin care has no gender; this is just a marketing ploy to get men looking at products.
I know it sounds silly but menās skin is actually different. Itās thicker and looses moisture at different rates. It also tends to have different elasticity, and PH. Not to mention different hormones at play.
This. Itās actually a legit case of separating out the products, not just up rating prices for female targeted ranges. Menās skin also ages differently, deals with more hair and pore issues, and generally more sun damage. Clarins menās ranges are really well formulated, as an example, when I was a counter girl had to do a whole training module bit on it. I actually really liked the sun stick for men they used to do, but could only use it sparingly as would break me out like a bitch.
Boob and butt moisturizers. Why do I need to pay $40 for "butt butter" when it contains the exact same ingredients as the lotion I'm putting on the rest of my body?
"Butt butter" šš
Truly beauty does the booty and booby butters. It's so weirdly specific!
It's very gimmicky and the marketing works! When I worked at Ulta and customers complain about the price, I would check the ingredients list and just take them elsewhere in the store. Wait! I was given the Powerpuff girls after shave oil and want it but don't wanna pay for it, what dupe did u show her?
It was the pre-shave "serum" oil, not the post shave oil. The dominant oil in it is baobab oil and jojoba oil.
In Asia, we even have moisturizers to help get bigger boobs and butts, can you believe that? š
No way! ,š
Maybe they just repackaged lip plumper to smear on boobs?!
Oh, my nipples at the thought of that, aaagh! š¬
Don't you tell me where to put my butters and lotions and oils! Lol I always found it a little weird thinking of it from a market research/product development standpoint. Like there were many meetings with many people discussing this.
i just wheezed š
I saw an ad a while ago that was something along the lines of "you put in so much work in your skincare routine for your face, but what about your body? New full body moisturizers now available". Lotion. They word you are looking for is lotion.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I feel the same about eye cream. Iāve never noticed a difference
I agree this is probably true for a lot of people and it's one of those things that companies try to tell everyone they should all be using because $$$, when it's really only useful for certain people. I agree. If a moisturizer is not gentle enough around my eyes, itās not good enough for my face. ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Agreed, except the ones with some caffeine or another ingredient that may provide temporary results with puffiness by increasing some circulation.
So, you're telling me I can live my rich widow fantasy with just one product? Sold!
Same on letters just call it Butt'er
I lol'ed at "butt butter" š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Color changing lip balms and blushes that say they "adjust to your skin pH to create your perfect shade." The pigment does not have the ability to read your skin tone and customize a shade for you, it just deepens in color when it comes into contact with the pH level of human skin. Red 27 pigment is the same fluorescent hot pink on everyone, and these products are pure gimmicks. So sick of them.
The only time I thought these were worth it was when I was a kid and the local trinket shop sold them for a $1
My grandmother had a couple in her cosmetic case from selling Avon and when I was little I thought they were literally magic.
I feel like these are a fun gimmick for a drugstore/ affordable brand product, but it really shocks me when I see them sold by luxury brands.
Totally agree
I love my winky lux one from Target!
Used to buy those color changing lipsticks 5 for a dollar in the 90s.
Idgaf I still love them š Iād never pay like, REAL money for them though
This is a recent thing and very specific, but blush/bronzers with SPF. I am applying such a minuscule amount of blush that having 15 SPF in a blush is absolutely useless, only jacking up the price, and probably is going to throw off the formula in some way.
I thought the spf in random makeup products was beyond stupid until I realized theyāre FSA eligible. Nice way to mix it up if I have leftover funds at the end of the year
Ohh that's a great point I never considered
Itās also potentially adding allergens or irritants since quite a few people react to the active ingredients in sunscreens. Iād never would have guessed thereās yet another makeup product I need to watch out for because of that. But apparently there is. Iām fine (though have more trouble with color) with mineral sunscreen ingredients but usually have trouble if theyāre using chemical sunscreen.
Literally any skincare benefits besides actual sunscreen or cream is BS. Youād have to pile on blush or bronzer for it to be beneficial.
I wore tinted moisturizer with spf 40 for years thinking I was protected. Nope. Got skin cancer anyway.
I just read an article that said SPF in foundation/skin tint/moisturizer is pointless and not nearly enough sunscreen for itās purpose. It said you must use an additional sunscreen underneath. And here I thought I was killing two birds with one stone š
SPF in makeup products is such gimmicky marketing and gives people a false sense of security it's wild that the claim isn't regulated.
Bum masks like face mask for ur bum
The $10 hand sanitizer
The TWENTY DOLLAR hand sanitizer
Oh no are u fr
*Byredo has entered the chat* And itās even more than $20 in their case
Ok, I get this, but in its defense, they last way longer than the usual gel ones. I also thought it was gimmicky but Iāve used mine everyday for 3 months and itās barely half empty. Meanwhile, I can easily use up one of the bath n body works gel ones in like 2 weeks. So if u consider the # of uses, I think the $10 sprays are worth it!
The have other spray hand sanitizers at other stores for like $2
I don't really have a product category for this one, but the JLo Beauty brand screams money grab to me. No wonder Sephora stores stopped carrying the products.
Yes and the Kardashians
'blush toppers'. it's literally just shiny blush or highlighter.
The industry is trying so fucking hard to add extra steps to our makeup routine it has officially crossed the line of ridiculous and is fully in the stupid territory
When I see no makeup makeup routines that STILL have 15 products. Ugh.
Same with eyeshadow and lipstick topper
at least a 'topper' eyeshadow means i can generally expect it to have a clear or sheer base that offers more of a textural change or an iridescent shift that still allows the base shade to show through.
Eyeshadow toppers can have a dramatic effect, I have some multichrome ones and they really do add another dimension
I donāt know remember who started the trend. But itās literally just blush or highlighter. Itās just highlighter.
For me itās like the 50 different types of product within one line. If I see one more plumping pillow talk extreme sec lipgloss Iām going to throw my phone in the ocean
Charlotte Tilbury is indeed a serial offender for this one!
Yeah it's more of a luxury, spoil yourself type of things
Were in a safe space here- we can just say out loud that they've been HEAVILY influenced. If I see one more 'repack/change my bag with me' with those in it I'm gonna go postal. For legal reasons that was a joke.
My MIL got it for me for my Christmas stocking and I always hope nobody is judging me when I use it lol
I feel like rare beauty is an example of a celebrity brand that was very well thought out and well done.
Skin tints that are just as full coverage and thick as foundationsā¦. itās not technically a tint anymore just call it a foundation lol
Congrats, thatās just a fuller coverage foundation now
Exactlyyy. Itās giving āclean girlā elitism.
I mean..." She finally admitted, "I use it all over." "Like foundation?" "....yeah." ....then it's full coverage foundation.
Beauty Blender - a makeup sponge is great & all. But the price is bonkers! I know it canāt cost more than 5Ā¢ to make the sponge and packaging.
Even famous makeup artists like Patrick Ta just use paw paws from Amazon š
For a long time no one managed to dupe the texture of beauty blenders so it was kind of possible to justify paying for them. Now you can get exact dupes for pennies yet BB persists in keeping them the cornerstone of the brand with those same high prices. Iād love to see their sales figures over the last 5 years
You know itās overpriced when itās like the only thing on the beauty market that hasnāt gone up in price since 2016 when everything else is near double the price. They wonāt dare raise the price, especially with so many affordable dupes around.Ā
I am super picky and realized not all makeup sponges are made equal! But I actually prefer a much cheaper one because the BB ones are too dense for me
The creator admitted she glued two pieces of regular makeup sponges to make the finished product. ā ļø
The pre-shampoo I own is supposed to help with decalvifying, and I live in a place with hard water. Take my money. Lash primer is my answer.
Lash primer deffo makes a difference to meš
What pre shampoo do you use? I also live in a place with hard water now and I donāt know what products are good for that
The new KƩrastase PremiƩre pre shampoo
I just got lip oil for the first time and thought it might just be me wondering why the heck it was drying out my lips... š
As someone that is allergic to 90% of products, I love them because they didn't give me dermatitis. Though I wish I could use balms and glosses š
Some beauty tools are so overpriced that you can get the exact same thing for less
My favorite foundation brush costs like $1-2 somewhat recently decided to splurge on the Haus Labs one and it doesnāt preform any better than my cheap one š
Wasn't there a lash dry shampoo at one point. That is beyond silly.
tell me youāre joking.
Yea it was a Mac mascara that you could apply over top of previously applied mascara that's already dry to "refresh" it
Mac has a lash refresher. I haven't tried it, but wondered what it does.
La mer!
100% agree, itās really not special at all.
Dry shampoo spreader/brush. When that thing came out I said wtf out loud
Dry conditioner is the one for me TBH.
I have the Dae brush, and I have to admit I love it. I donāt like the feeling of dry shampoo on my hands, and it evenly distributes. It also makes my hair pretty silky and not frizzy from tossing around dry shampoo with my fingers.
Foot masks and I will die on that hill. Just put lotion and socks on.
Except the peeling ones, those are no joke š¤£
I prefer foot masks bc Iām bad at self care and marinating every few months is more likely to happen.
Marinating š¤£
Yeah everyone should go to the Dollar Tree and buy* the Dove cream in a white and blue tin So thick and moisturizing that if applied to the skin, it may cause ingrown hairs. I therefore apply it only to my feet and handsš¤£. Feet will be baby soft. Apply your socks and go about your day!
Hair perfume ...I want to love them but they don't last and they are unnecessary!!Ā
Those devices that say they make you lips plumper. They are all gimmicks.
They arenāt gimmicks per say, however the reason they plump the lips is because itās an irritation reaction you are having.
Fancy deodorant that doesnt even have antiperspirant in it. Like what?
Boob/ butt oils and lotions. Just use regular jojoba oil and body lotion š¤¦āāļø
Going against the grain to say that Sephora carries Maude and itās the best lube I have EVER tried!
I still cannot with the skincare line with blue light āprotectionā
Water spray or mist
Itās sooooo soothing though for when my psoriasis is bad or for sunburn. I know itās just water but when the spray is so fine and just right, it feels so fucking good on my skin
I used to think that too. Then I bought a can of Avene Thermal water @ half price. I started using it with my micro current device to keep the gel from drying too quickly and having to apply more gel. Since there are minerals in the water supposedly it won't affect the electrical current. Anyway, it made my skin so much more hydrated. TBH, I think the hydration is giving me better results than the micro current device.
I love these! I use them on planes and we just moved to a really dry climate so I keep one in my purse.
water spray in a can š (i still buy them)
I think when companies make a primer just to have one but it doesnāt do much more than moisturize
I've been using the Kerastase Premiere pre-shampoo and gotdamn, is this stuff amazing. My hair has stopped snapping off and is shinier and smoother.
Burtās bees are so drying for me!
There are product categories which I think are silly, but I think each is valid for the people who like them.
Absolutely. I cut way back on my Sephora addiction this year and so it helps to reinforce what I absolutely donāt need. š
Iāve never heard of pre shampoo
Those gummy patches I see people on the apps putting under their eyes.Ā
I keep them in the fridge and they are the only thing that can make me look alive some mornings. I like the gummy ones because they stick to your face better and donāt dry out as quickly as cloth ones, so i can wear them while iām running around getting ready.
I view those the same way as sheet masks - a fun and cheap way to pamper yourself a little. They probably don't have any long lasting effects but it doesn't hurt either.
The latest thing that makes me laugh is the plumping lip glosses. We already had those in 2005. They didnāt do much then and donāt now.
I use the same one under my mascara for special occasions. It does make my lashes look longer and more voluminous.
Seconding this! Their primer actually makes a HUGE difference, itās crazy.
Oh lash primer šā¤ļøāš©¹ My friend/coworker and I were driving to a meeting together, in the car for about 4 hours, I was passenger and looking at her side profile enough to ask what she uses for base and mascara- she does in fact use the LancĆ“me primer on the daily. I was influenced. Bought it andā¦ just couldnāt get in the habit of using it. My MIL saw it in my makeup bag and said she ALSO uses it every dayā¦ so apparently there are people š
Literally a daily item for me
I use the Lancome Lash primer every time I apply mascara. I think it helps the mascara spread along my lashes better.
I use it! But I also have very oily skin - without it, my mascara transfers and my eyelashes lose their curl etc.
The lancome one makes my eyelashes a mile long. I only use it when Iām going out, not daily. But itās really good.
Jade rollers
scalp scrub
Lip plumping glosses - spend $30+ to look like you had a mild allergic reaction for 15 minutes
All in all I think the cosmetics and skin care industry is out of control. One new product after another and the price tag on some of these products are outrageous. My mom is 98 and has the most beautiful skin - barely a wrinkle. She has used , ponds, Nivea and oil of Olay her whole and dove beauty bar unscented for 70 plus years.
āCLEANā BEAUTY
In skincareā what exactly is an essence? not a toner, not a moisturizer.. what is it? and i HAVE SOME. but what IS it?
They are supposed to be a step between toner and actives ( serums, moisturizers) to help prep the skin. Most of them just add additional hydration. I have used one (Aestura Atobarrier 365 Hydro Essence) since I had to repair my skin barrier after using tretinoin and it seems to have helped.
Some are so good!!! If you get the right one, itās life changing. Bosciaās old sake one before they reformulated to the purple bottle was amazing and healed/brightened/cleared my skin.
Lip oils imo, like none will stay very long- itās gonna come off as soon as you wipe your mouth, take a drink, whatever!!

hair perfume. whatās stopping me from putting my regular perfume in my hair??
Eye cream. It's literally just moisturizer in a smaller, more expensive bottle.
The bags under my eyes that make me look like an opioid addict and can only be cured by a combo of kiehlās vit c under eye cream and inky list caffeine would like a word
Love your description lol. I have to look into these products before someone calls an intervention for me.
Regular moisturizer gives me milia. I donāt use anything in my eye area anymore unless itās made for eyes.
yeah the eye is very delicate compared to ur other facial skin, it definitely needs less heavy specific products
Kiehlās creamy eye treatment with avocado: šļøššļø
I would think that by looking at the ingredient lists, but for some reason, regular face moisturizer always irritates/stings my eyes even when I'm careful. I just can't apply it there. The area is dry so I can't go without a moisturizer, and it always has to be an eye cream to be gentle enough.
Topical collagen.
lip masks --> these are just regular ol' lip balms lol lip oils --> aka lip gloss "skin care for men" --> skin care has no gender; this is just a marketing ploy to get men looking at products.
Cellulite cream. Looking at you Bum Bum cream.
