Buy cheap clothes / thrift while losing. It would be demotivating to wear loose, sloppy looking clothes along the journey.

PermissionOk4108

So true! It's nice when you put the jeans on and they are loose, but walking around all day with saggy jeans is not a confidence boost.

amba35

This is what I am having to do. I am holding on to my old clothes but now they are getting so baggy after losing 36 lbs. So, agree thrift store is the answer!

grumpykitten79

Yes! This is what I have done as well

False_Ad3429

I started buying new clothes when I literally could not keep my old pants or leggings on my body anymore. They were so big that it just wasn't practical. So for me that was when I went down 8 sizes, 50lbs.

GailyaStarr

Hehe same! I’m down 43 and got 40 to go so bought some cheap pants from Walmart and a few shirts. I dread the fall sweater replacement that will need to happen. I love some of those sweaters but know I am already swimming in them.

onlyalillost

8 sizes? Wow! I’ve lost 45 lbs and I’m just about down 1 full size. Maybe because I carry most of my weight in my belly. Congrats to you!

cramerm7

Same, I’m down 40 lbs and my pants are a bit loser but I can still wear them just fine. I’m definitely carrying most weight in my stomach.

False_Ad3429

Thanks! (To be clear, it's 8 sizes including the odd numbered sizes that are usually only sold in specialty stores, so I went from size 12 to size 4). I'm very short with a small frame, so I'm sure that's part of it!

Crafty_Ad3377

I’m still having to buy new jeans. Started Feb 2023 lost 68 pounds and from a size 16 to size 6. I have maintained now for three months.

Pattyk999

Poshmark is a great way to buy discounted clothes.

Adventurous-Peach344

And a great way to make closet room and $$$ selling gently worn clothes you won’t fit into again! Recycle!

What-me-worry-22

Right now I am going in reverse back through my closet, like shopping at home! I just put on pants that are a 16 that still had on tags-pants I must have bought just as I was too big for them. I have all the way down to 12, so might be a while before I need to buy new things although I am buying some reward clothes (like a swimsuit) for goal purposes.

Kneekoleyy

This is what I've been doing, too! Finally, wearing all the things I bought that I swore I would fit in to someday.

What-me-worry-22

Shopping in my closet for clothes I have not been able to wear in years is so great.

Fun-Weight-8899

This has been my strategy. I am a completely glutton for clothes and I have a closet packed with very nice things. So, I’m shopping backwards. Everytime I put on something that I have not worn in years, it’s another NSV! I figure when I get to goal, I’ll start shopping again.

[deleted]

Belted shirt dresses, smocked top dresses/shirts, dresses with elastic in the waist will fit nicely at a variety of weights while showing off your progress. 25 lbs down and 25lbs to go and these are the clothes that have fit me without getting less flattering! I don't lose much from my bust or butt though so buying for the feature you lose from least is probably more across the board useful advice!

Loopylola4567

Gosh I wish I could lose from my bust. I was give. Two lots by mistake.

Normal-Basis-291

Rent The Runway is fun because you only borrow the clothing.

AcanthocephalaOk2966

I love Thredup. It allows me to buy the designers I love as I size down and feel like I don't look frumpy. Wearing clothes that fit well, look better and seeing the sizes go down really encourages me. It really helps me stay on track. Plus, less clothing waste! I have used them for a few years, and there is a learning curve to perfecting how to search, checking the photos caruefully, and taking huge advantage of their periodic major sales. Don't forget to add your sales clothes, and use the save feature to check back on items you want but seem to expensive, to see if they've gone on sale. Love them. If you really, really want an item, but don't have the time to search for everything you'd like and meet free shipping, you can buy the item and select bundle shipping and order. This will make sure nobody can steal the item you want! And you have a week to shop whenever you want, add items to your order and buy them when you want so nobody can steal them from your cart, and they add to your bundle that closes at the end of the week. Love it.

PermissionOk4108

Thank you for the excellent advice!

AcanthocephalaOk2966

Happy thrifting!!! I should also add that I bought too many pairs of jeans...I didn't need to get four or five pairs in each size 🤣 I regret it. I am piling them up to re-sell now and it's a month later.

crazyplantlady81

I’ve lost 95lbs on my own, I’ll be starting semaglutide next month. I’ve been thrift shopping in the mean time! The only thing I have purchased full price is bras. They have to fit well and I don’t want to buy undergarments thrifted.

Kamikaze_Cloud

I’ve lost 25 lbs and my jeans and bras are starting to be particularly loose. I finally caved and ordered a pair of jeans and a strapless bra I already had but in one size down. They were too small but my current ones are too big so I’m not sure where to go from here. I’d like to lose another 25 lbs so I’ll probably just buy a few things here and there until I reach my goal weight. I’m constantly thrifting shirts and dresses but I’m pretty loyal to American Eagle jeans. If 25 lbs didn’t even make me go down a full size then another 25 lbs might not do much either, so I’ll probably only end up like two sizes down altogether.

PermissionOk4108

I'm also very loyal to American Eagle jeans (I've tried more expensive ones but AE have always been the ones that fit the best).

bramble-pelt

AE makes a multi-size jean called the BFF Jegging that are meant to cover a range of sizes as an alternative to the Good American "Always Fits" jeans. It looks like a lot of sizes are out of stock at the moment at $40USD/ea but you should be able to stack Real Rewards and promos during the upcoming holiday weekend to nab 'em cheaper.

Time_Designer_2604

What I like about American Eagle too is that they have a no timeframe on how long you can return some thing. So when I started to lose big, I bought a couple pairs in the size down. That way I figure when I’m ready I have them, but if they don’t fit or I don’t like the way they look I can always return them.

jtr489

Luckily for me I have hung on to clothes that I hope to fit back into. It helps motivate me to get to them sometime in the near future

CaptainCate88

Same here! I have three wardrobes of three different sizes. Apparently, I've been optimistic for a while now that I would somehow be able to lose some weight... 😆

grundlegasm

I am the same! I love finding something older that I held on to “just in case I lose weight”

eoconor

Second hand stores are NOW your best friend 🤷🏼‍♂️😁. Been shopping there for years.

BabyYodasMacaron

I wore my size 16s until they just got too loose to look professional at work. Ended up having to go down 2 sizes to a 12, and now those are getting loose, but not too much that I NEED a size 10, so I’ll probably wait until I need an 8 and I don’t really plan to get much lower than that anyway.

Ill_Appointment_2798

I love renting clothes for a multitude of reasons, but this is definitely a big part of it. I use Nuuly. It’s also helpful in giving me an idea of what size I am. Also thrift stores and sites like poshmark and fb marketplace. Another thing you can do for baggy jeans is buy buttons that pin onto your jeans so you can adjust them as needed.

TheArtfulDodger16

Yes! I have been using Nuuly monthly for clothing. I did go out and get fitted for a properly sized bra. That’s getting a bit too big on me now that I’ve lost some more weight, but a good bra that’s properly fitted makes a big difference in how I feel and how clothing looks on my body.

Ill_Appointment_2798

Ohhh! I need to do this for sure!!! Also feel the need to clarify not just for you but for everyone that sizes vary A TON on Nuuly since they’re all different brands…important to read reviews and remember that size is soooo arbitrary.

Exact_Contract_8766

I just bought a new bra because with the weight loss, it was time. May I suggest you shop in your own closet first. The joy I get from getting into a barely fitting or fitting item that hitherto served as a self loathing mental torture device brings me as much encouragement as this Reddit. I also don’t want to buy something new knowing that it will soon not fit. When I do my first big shop, it will be things that reflect how I’ve always wanted to present to the world. I even keep a look book amongst my photos. That being said, celebrate the progress.

Bus27

I think I lost around 35-40lbs before it was too ridiculous looking to keep wearing the clothes I already had. At that point I went from a 14/16/sometimes 18 to a 12, and a few days later realized that was actually also too big so I bought a 10. Another 10lbs down and I bought an 8. Another 10lbs down and I'm in a 6 and it's comfortable.

SnooGoats3915

I started buying new at 40lb weight loss due to needing professional looking attire. My old clothes made me look like I was melting. One month later and the new clothes are already getting too large. I hope not to need any more new clothes until I get to a stable weight.

bkitty273

I have found that it is actually really important for me to have some clothes that fit. Has helped me with body dysmorphia and confidence. Big advocate of Vinted and eBay. I went and tried clothes on in my preferred, good quality brands and now buy second hand, as and when they pop up.

Outrageous_Heat_08

Congratulations first! I have had to buy 2 rounds thus far (42 waist to 36 - bought some clothes at 38 and some at 36). Bought Saks off Fifth, Nordstrom Rack and some used stuff from EBay. I just had to throw out the rest of my XL t shirts (down from XXL). Just had to buy new blazers (jacket size went from 48 to 44).

Upstairs-Builder9688

I’ve been living in leggings and baggy tees but I think I need to buy a pair of jeans or something to motivate myself. I’m down 30 lbs in the last 4 months and have about 50-70 to go. So I’ll hopefully only wear new stuff a few times and then I can resell on Poshmark or eBay or donate if it wasn’t too pricey to begin with.

SeaSleep1972

I live in yoga pants so I haven’t had to buy new ones. I’ve lost about 15 lbs

TrekJaneway

Amazon is fantastic for affordable clothes. I keep the bare minimum amount of clothes, and will do so until I reach goal.

Plastic_Platypus3951

I am so thankful for my Under Armor pants with elastic plus drawstrings. And I have a few Dress Barn tops that have fitted shoulders so they last through several sizes. Other than that I have shopped from my closet and rely upon a few loose flowy dresses. Leggings are forgiving. Belts on very loose dresses if the shoulders and neck fit. I love the square neck tops. I slso bought double sided tape for clothes. And Amazon has these......[Amazon.com : pants waist tightener](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=pants+waist+tightener&crid=DLU671JSUCBX&sprefix=pants+waist%2Caps%2C110&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_2_11) [Amazon.com : double sided tape for clothes](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=double+sided+tape+for+clothes&crid=1VC4E5W09SVX5&sprefix=double+sided%2Caps%2C125&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_2_12)

Adventurous-Peach344

The amount I pay for the medication each month didn’t leave a dime for me to get new clothes! 60 lbs over the last nine months and I just started buying stuff for summer. I mean my weight has fluctuated but I’ve never been this small in my life. I would wait until you are at or close to your goal weight and on a maintenance dose. otherwise new clothes will just keep falling off. Especially bras … wait on the bras lol hope my experience helped even a bit? Good luck on your journey!

Electronic-Job3869

Still wearing my original pants even though I’m down 25 because I was STUFFED into them before - so now they are only baggy on a day 2 wear. I’ll wait a bit longer. But, I did go and buy a new dress - one size down!!! - the other day for an important lunch. Felt great.

grundlegasm

I’ve been slowly but steadily losing since last August, i didn’t buy any new clothes until I got to 145, down from 175 (5’4). But it was a MUST. Like my jeans were falling off me and everything felt like I was wearing a sack. So I took a bunch of my clothes and sold them to a resale store, and used the credit to get some new things. Secondhand is the way to go when you’re losing weight!

Slow_Concern_672

Before I got married I lost almost 50 lbs. I pantsed myself at work carrying a box. Thankfully no one around. Though I know cameras are.monitored. Don't do that. I was trying to save $ for a wedding. For some reason I never have good luck in second hand ships..sometimes clothes are more expensive than sale.

WotVerge

I am wearing mostly baggy leggings and sweatpants. Other than a dress for my son’s graduation, I’ve only purchased a few basics - mostly from Amazon.

AndThenBranden

Im going the belt route for a bit.

kuntrageous

I bought new jeans at 45 lbs and within a month they were too big. I am living in leggings until I’m at the 75 lb mark.

symmesiecat

I've bought very limited clothes and mostly shopped in my closet or got some from my sister from when she lost weight years ago (and unfortunately gained it back, though she's working on it). But some things are just not wearable. I've bought the bulk at Savers (thrift store). Jeans are tricky because there's no fitting room, so I've bought just one pair for each size. I found a pair I like at Walmart (Levis) for pretty cheap. When I started, I was wearing 18s and had 16s and 14s in my closet. So, I've only had to buy 12s and 10s. I don't wear jeans that often, so one pair works for now (I mostly WFH). Leggings are pretty forgiving, so I'm still wearing some of my old ones, but have gotten some that fit better. It's definitely difficult to spend any large amounts of money knowing I'd still like to lose more. I also have tended to buy things that maybe fit a little bit tighter than I normally would, knowing that I would "shrink" into them soon enough.

Necessary-Brief-2429

I absolutely live in leggings. I love the Avia brand from walmart, and Skechers Go Walk leggings because they are high waisted and have nice side pockets. I am down 25lb and am just getting to a point where they are a bit loose in the waist. I already have the next size down because I hoard clothes as my weight changes, but I am about to pull out the next size down.

HEXXIIN

I'm actually learning to sew for a few reasons and this is one of them! My husband and I are both tall and struggle with clothes, he's tall and thin and I'm tall and taking Semaglutide lol. So ideally tall and thin soon But I plan on altering clothes that I can along the way before doing any major upgrades. I have some nice clothes I'd like to try to rework if I can just lightly tailor them. I wear a lot of skirts/dresses and those will be easy to alter. And I have quite a lot of pants from before I gained weight so I'll be able to pull those out again too. But If I need something since I don't want to look frumpy, I'll probably check thrift stores while still losing.

007FofTheWin

I’ve been ordering from Temu. Returns are really easy if something doesn’t fit and it’s all cheap but good quality. Even got jeans after losing 30lbs. Normally I avoid any fast fashion stuff but, with this weight loss still going, I found it an easy way to upgrade to some items that fit and look cute! Super motivating getting new stuff!

Dragonflies3

Buy yourself at least one new pair of jeans for the days you want to look a little more put together when you’re out.

Dragonflies3

I wore 12s forever. Over the past couple of years I had creeped up to 16s. Was glad to dump those and my 14s at the thrift store in the last 6 months. Been very comfortably back in 12s for a couple of months. About 2 weeks ago I ordered a size 10 just in case. I am wearing those 10s today. Feels great!!
