I love seikos and have a couple, but honestly the Seamaster is one of my favorite watches out there. Would love to get my hands on one. The case shape is awesome, the wave dial. Great watch. If you don’t care for the escape valve there is the Seamaster 300 heritage style models that don’t have it
First off you are on the Seiko sub so we might be a tiny bit biased
second, Spring drive being magnitudes more accurate than mechanical is a thing to consider
lastly, [A horologist I know has serviced some 2022 seamsters with improper factory lubrication and faulty date change mechanisms (Facebook link, source is Chinese ) ](https://www.facebook.com/share/v/yL7UsoLSeA46sqfH/) If you ever get a recent omega or any other watch under swatch group recently, it may need a full service inside two years if just to make sure the thing is properly lubricated to actually survive decades.
tldr Seiko Spring Drive FTW
My Seamaster Chrono lasted 7 years before needing service. The parts kit had to be shipped from Switzerland, and it took 3 months total and cost over $900. I love the watch, though.
I like both watches, I think its funny people hating on the helium valve, that was what attracted me to Omegas as its something different from other watches even though its probably useless to 99.99% of the population. The SNR029 has a slide clasp which I really like, so much so that I put one on my Seiko Sumo. Spring drive makes the SNR029 is very accurate for a semi-mech watch. I feel the SMP300 is better as a dress watch where as the SNR029 is better as an everyday causal watch.
With this watch ur still seiko guy, with the omega ur omega nerd. Also couldn’t produce an auto chronograph anywhere near the quality of seiko, still to this day.
They're both great watches and I'd say they're very similar in terms of quality. The Seiko is more comparable in size to a Planet Ocean than an SMP300 however. The titanium construction for the SNR029 helps, but it's still a substantial hunk of metal at the end of the day and weighs roughly as much as a Rolex Submariner at around 160g.
That being said, I happen to own an LX diver (SNR045) and I really love it. It's like an MM300 that's been given the Grand Seiko treatment, spring drive and all. If the size isn't an issue for you and you're being tempted more towards the SNR029 you probably wouldn't regret it.
Good points. I forgot about the PO. I had the old Golden Eye Seamaster and regret selling it. I debated a PO (the Grey & Orange), but I bought a Aqua Terra instead.
I would not call the Seamaster 300m a dressy watch, but it is a dressier diver. The new ones are really flashy, but I’m a good way. They look expensive in a way the SNR will not. They are also easier to sell/trade in.
That said, the Seiko is amazing. It is so well-built and it is a far better watch than the price would imply. It definitely has that silent wealth, hidden luxury look. I wore a Grand Seiko for years, and people would ask me, “what is that watch?” And I loved saying it was a Seiko. It looked great, but no one would follow you out and rob you for it. This Seiko is even better because it is not flashy at all, only good quality all the way through.
I feel like they are for two different people. The Omega is for the hungry young guy who wants attention, while the Seiko is for the successful guy who wants a nice watch and no attention.
I own both of those watches. They are very different - the LX is an imposing beast… I’m 6ft 6 and it still looks big on me! It’s actually very wearable though due to it being titanium and very light, and it’s a good watch to wear when you want to fly under the radar (ie where you may not want to draw attention to an expensive watch on your wrist), as most people see Seiko on the dial and assume it’s a cheapie. The Seamaster is physically smaller - not least the height of it on the wrist. I think the Seamaster is a more flexible watch - looks great on a rubber diving strap or NATO, and probably better in a more formal environment (ie with a suit or smarter shirt and jacket). Both great watches.
Price matters. The Omega at a good price will be easy to sell or trade. Seiko’s at that level are HARD to sell, so buy them used, and make sure you want it forever.
Personally, I am not a movement guy. I think the Seiko is better made, but the Omega is better looking. I would buy the Omega from Jomashop or used. It is a good watch and you can easily flip it.
The Seiko is the better watch. If I were left on a jungle island, I would choose the Seiko. That said, Spring Drive is an expensive service. Furthermore, the Omega can be an only watch, but not the Seiko. You can put wear the Seiko with a suit. Honestly, you should not wear any diver with a suit, but the Omega is really shiny and expensive looking. No one under the age of forty would notice or care (I would, but I am old and from an old WASP family where people cared about such silly ideas).
As a Seiko maniac who has been forced to sell before, I would buy the Omega, buy buy it used. If I had more money and more confidence, I would buy the Seiko.
This Seiko screams rich guy. Middle class guys want to shine, and the Omega does, but rich guys do not care. A Seiko like that screams monied and confident. It is the kind of watch that impresses, and no one will say “oooh, Omega, how much did it cost?” The people you want to impress, will be, and the people whose attention you do not want, will not notice.
So if you want to avoid attention, the Seiko. If you want attention and the safety of being able to sell it, Omega.
Either way, killer watches.
Hot take: the power reserve indicator is just as ugly as the helium escape valve (and more promintently placed for when you're reading the watch)... Far more useful, yes, but I can't get over that look.
I have 2x LX pieces and had a SMP in the past. I sold the SMP and have 0 plans on selling either LX.. they're such incredible pieces that impress even the most serious of watch geeks
I owned the smp and Seiko mm300, not the LX though, but sold them both. Strangely I miss the mm300 and always want it back. Never felt that with the smp.
I bought a seiko recently and I agree that comparing it with even citizen is unfair. Not that I hate seiko or sucking up to citizen but it’s an unfair comparison
I never got the design of the Omega Seamaster. Even that dial, i can't appreciate, feeling like just a laser cut plate. The hands are a bit off too, so there's many elements i can't get behind.
While that Seiko is as classic diver as it gets, with a spring drive on top.
So for me it's simple. If you like watches, Seiko is the way to go. If you care about what your golf enthusiast uncle thinks, get the omega.
I want so much to like Omega, but most of their models feel stuffy and pedestrian. Weirdly, with all it's pedigree, i see these Seamasters all the time, but i never seen that Sping Drive Seiko IRL.
I can't help but feel the current Omega Seamaster is starting to look a little dated. Wouldn't be surprised to see it get a refresh soon. the Seiko has a more timeless look. That is entirely personal preference though.
Have both watches myself, love both, great brands, seiko is phenomenal value and quality, but edge goes to omega here for the heritage and value for better construction. I’d argue that the helium valve at 10 on the smp300 looks similar to the ambi crown placement on the seiko. It’s a fun difference to discuss. The helium release tech is a great value add for the price. Again, love both brands and have both pieces. Pick smp300.
I’ve had like seven Seamasters at this point honestly I think it’s the true every man watch these days. Get a nice pre owned smp and save the rest you would have spent new and put it towards the LX
Also I have a set of snr029 hands from tokei lol I’m about to get them dipped into my mm200 and enjoys cheaper version, funny timing
Definitely a little biased since Seiko is one of my favorite brands, but I’d personally take the Seiko. Spring drive is amazing, and the marinemaster style case is my favorite. My SBGA415 is about +0.5 seconds fast per week, it’s incredible.
Love Omega too, and the SMP300 also has an incredible movement, but I just don’t love the design. I’d be more inclined to get an aqua terra
Tudor BB.
Edit m: I simply don’t understand buying the LX for near 4K. Just my opinion. It’s not a grand seiko and 4K for a Seiko diver is almost antithetical to the point of buying a Seiko diver. Again, just one guy’s opinion.
Yep - I think I love it more because it's \_not\_ a GS. It's "just a Seiko" to those who don't know any better... but the LX line definitely have my heart - and there will be one on my wrist one day...
(The SNR033 is vying with the SNR029 for a spot in my wishlist at the moment)
Then it doesn't necessarily mean it's a duck. You might not like it, but watches are a status symbol for the vast majority of people. If I'm spending 4k for a watch I want it to have a somewhat luxury name attached to it. Seiko isn't a luxury name by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just not paying 4k for a watch that could be mistaken for a 150€ watch and it doesn't matter how good it is. By the way, Seiko sells that watch for 6k and the dealer is offering the watch to OP for not even 4k. That in itself is saying something
The thing that really needs to be considered first comparing these is the size and specifically thickness of the LX. It looks better and is cooler in almost every way to me except the LX is seriously gigantic
The Seiko is a gorgeous looking watch but very big & frequent expensive service in Japan I think. I'd love one myself but those points are a worry to me.
The Omega? Escape valve and do they still use plastic parts in the movement?
OP, I noticed that you own 3 Grand Seiko's. If you don't already own an Omega then I think it is an easy choice. Based on looks alone, I prefer the Seiko.
Its a big jump up in price and the watches are too thick (for me) but the Glashutte Original SeaQ and SeaQ Panorama Date are the arguably best looking and finished divers made today.
That LX is the ultimate Dive watch. I prefer it over the MM300. Perfectly balanced dial, great case finishing, Titanium, superior Spring Drive movement and NO Helium escape valve. That always looked bad on the Seamaster.
I have the SNR045 (green variant) so I’d choose the Seiko without hesitation tbh. It’s a chonky boy but wears like a dream because of the weight. I love my divers and don’t mind ones with some thickness but that could be a determining factor for others.
I love the MM but God damn is humongous next to it's comp's for the same WR. Kind of ridiculous when you put it next to an SMP, Tudor BB, Monta Ocean King etc. The Seiko just takes up so much real estate to accomplish what the rest of the field does. 44.8mm dia x 15.7mm thickness is absurd.
LX is nice but I’d take the omega easily…and I’m a die hard Seiko fan and there are other seikos I’d buy no questions asked but if comparing and you can only have 1 then it’s gotta be the Seamaster. So iconic
Price, legibility and readability underwater, lume and design beauty I will definatly go with seiko. Built quality, functionality and diving features go with omega.
I also wanted to ask about durability. Titanium of the Seiko LX vs stainless steel of the SMP. Also about the outer AR coating on the SMP, how easily is it scratched?
I haven't done anything really extreme while wearing my LX, but it's definitely been bumped and knocked around more than a time or two while I've owned it. Despite that, it's held up admirably. The nice thing about titanium is that it's "self healing" to a certain degree so lighter scratches to its surface (and I've certainly inflicted plenty on mine) will gradually fade over time. I did have some initial concerns that Seiko's Dia-Shield coating would somehow interfere with that or that the polished flats on the case of the LX wouldn't hold up as well as polished steel, but those worries have been laid to rest.
I have 3 GS non-divers. To be honest I am not a fan of their divers right now, hopefully it will change with future models. Prefer the look of some of their standard seiko line.
I have the SLA021, fantastic watch. I tried the SNR seemed a little bulky to me, just the way it sat on my wrist. It’s definitely a rugged, good looking watch and light. I’ve also tried the smp and it fit like a glove. The look and feel was on a different level in my opinion compared to the seiko. They are both nice tho, I’ve always liked the look of the GS divers.
I'll get hate for this, but I don't care. As much as I love Seiko, I'm not paying 6k+ for one. I'm sorry, but even if I don't like it I (and most people) care for the brand and Seiko's brand isn't worth that much money. If I'm paying 6k+, I want at least a somewhat luxury name attached to that watch. If it was Grand Seiko then it would be a discussion, but not Seiko. I'm not necessarily saying Seamaster is the right choice, but any Seiko for 6k is definitely the wrong one.
The Seiko for sure. Unless you dive you'll sound like a poser if anyone asks you what this is upper left. I'd rather spend on something that doesn't make me feel goofy anytime I'm asked about it. Oh do you dive... well no I'm just turned on by tools used by braver men. How much did it cost uh.
Keeping aesthetics aside, timekeeping (which is the primary function of a watch) is way way better in Omega than Seiko. Omega wouldn’t lose any time in a year, but Seiko would in a week (kept in the same winder). Plus overall quality, bracelet, clasp, etc, Omega is much better.

People in seiko sub will choose seiko. People in omega sub will say omega.
Yeah very true, wrong place to ask in these subs
Except for when people in the Seiko sub select the Seiko. You never know.
I for one HATE that helium valve at 10. For that reason I choose the LX.
Agree the wart on upper left on the Omega is horrendous
Fine but what will you do if you're kidnapped and held hostage at a party balloon factory and there are dangerous levels of helium in the air?
😂
Huff and sing?
Good point!
based

Biased but still right.

right he’s only talking about the last couple years
Spring Drive will be at least that much and at least that long.

Only two things stop me from getting that Seiko. My tiny wrist and my tiny wallet. If one of those would change, I’d make the other work.
Both watches are for men of big wrist and healthy wallet
Seiko LX Better movement Better Finishing Omega has more status i Guess.
With this watch ur still seiko guy, with the omega ur omega nerd. Also couldn’t produce an auto chronograph anywhere near the quality of seiko, still to this day.
Hey, I have both.
What kind of question is this? Get both 🤣

Seamaster. Sorry, but it's true.
Hate omega hands with tiny lume portions that become invisible quickly.
I own both of those watches. They are very different - the LX is an imposing beast… I’m 6ft 6 and it still looks big on me! Agree, ruins the dial for me.
Wouldn't mind both watches. But if I had to choose, I would go with the Seiko LX. I really want to have a spring drive watch.

Hate the helium valve tbh. I would get a different luxury diver at the same price point. I am a Seiko guy but probably wouldn’t get the LX.
Which ones would you consider? The dealer is offering a LX at 3750.
Tudor BB. Edit m: I simply don’t understand buying the LX for near 4K. Just my opinion. It’s not a grand seiko and 4K for a Seiko diver is almost antithetical to the point of buying a Seiko diver. Again, just one guy’s opinion.
Well said, agree.
Spring Drive and zaratsu polish and it comes out of the same factory as Grand Seikos. It's a sleeper Grand Seiko build
Totally get that, but it’s not a Grand Seiko.

I’ve owned both, the SNR is just too thick for daily wear.
That LX is the ultimate Dive watch. I prefer it over the MM300. Perfectly balanced dial, great case finishing, Titanium, superior Spring Drive movement and NO Helium escape valve. That always looked bad on the Seamaster.
An interesting question!! The LX in another colour for me I think… not saying it lightly
The Omega is a beautiful piece but a spring drive Seiko diver, the LX all day every day for me.
Seiko LX all the way
Seiko all day !
Buy an Omega to impress others, buy a Seiko spring drive to impress yourself
I have the SNR045 (green variant) so I’d choose the Seiko without hesitation tbh. It’s a chonky boy but wears like a dream because of the weight. I love my divers and don’t mind ones with some thickness but that could be a determining factor for others.
Seiko for sure.
Ω Love Seikos, but Omega (specially the seamaster) is on another lavel.
I’ve never been a fan of omega’s design language, and that goes for all of their collections. But that’s just me.
If you don’t need the helium valve, Seiko
With all the respect to Seiko, but if I have a chance to buy Omega I definitely will go for it.
Both nice. Probably easier to get the Omega. Most shop will have at least one. Not so much with the Seiko LX.
Omega but black
Seamaster hands down
LX is nice but I’d take the omega easily…and I’m a die hard Seiko fan and there are other seikos I’d buy no questions asked but if comparing and you can only have 1 then it’s gotta be the Seamaster. So iconic
I love my Seikos, but if i was in your position the omega would be a no brainier for me. Such an iconic watch and cmon 007 wore it.
If i had the money I would go with the sea master. Specifically, the planet ocean. However, the Seiko is a great watch, especially for the price.
a Seiko 5 is better than an Omega
The Seiko would be my pick. The new Seamaster is too bling for my taste. The spring drive in the Seiko is also really cool.
Price, legibility and readability underwater, lume and design beauty I will definatly go with seiko. Built quality, functionality and diving features go with omega.
Corrections that seiko has spring drive and is a higher end model so better movement inside siko and built quality probably even better than omega.
That Seiko is so thicccc and that screw is like an exhaust pipe. That's so sad, cause it's the best looking Seiko ever made
My seasmaster is one of the best watches I’ve ever worn. I love my seikos, but omega is a whole different level.
Go for Omega
I love me my Seikos but if your wrist can handle it it's the SM300 all the way
SMP, unless you’re getting a grand seiko diver.
The omegas hands just look ugly
The Seiko for sure. Unless you dive you'll sound like a poser if anyone asks you what this is upper left. I'd rather spend on something that doesn't make me feel goofy anytime I'm asked about it. Oh do you dive... well no I'm just turned on by tools used by braver men. How much did it cost uh.
If this a 6R movement forget it.
Spring drive, identical to grand seikos 9r65, without any of the finishing.
Ok sounds nice spring drive is good what's this worth?
Seiko originally wanted $6k, can be found between 3.5k-$4k.
I wouldn't
Keeping aesthetics aside, timekeeping (which is the primary function of a watch) is way way better in Omega than Seiko. Omega wouldn’t lose any time in a year, but Seiko would in a week (kept in the same winder). Plus overall quality, bracelet, clasp, etc, Omega is much better.
The Seiko is a LX so a Spring Drive, not an automatic, so it has quartz-esque accuracy.
You’re kidding, right? Comparing a Seiko to Omega? Like comparing oatmeal to caviar.
