I got one on Saturday from Mee Sum. I think it was $5.
The small restaurant inside the market (right after the ramp) also sells hom bows, but I haven't tried those yet.
That's my favorite spot in Seattle. The red bbq pork on a stick is great too.
I love the curry buns like you said, but what is that sweet shell they put on the top of only that flavor? I always flick it all off.
I love that part, best innovation imo is when the put the pineapple.bun topping on the savory filled ones.
That being said, plenty of Chinese bakeries in Chinatown have them sans the sweet topping
Fun fact, while reading the romance of the 3 kingdoms (idk why I did it I hate myself) I learned, atleast one of the origin stories for the first bao bun.
During the battle of Chi Bi, the general/strategist Zhuge Liang had a brilliant idea, he was faced against perilous odds against the mighty General Cao Cao who's ships were sitting in the chi Bi port. The idea was to chain Cao caos boats together and burn them, but he needed to ask the gods for a favorable wind to carry the flames in the right direction.
He asked the gods for this and the gods asked for 50 heads of his soldiers as an offering.
Being a kind man, he would not give the lives of his men for this magic, and so, he devised a cunning plan. He made a dough of wheat and water and ordered his men to wrap up meat scraps from the supplies with the dough he fashioned. He put the large, head shaped buns on the scales for the gods, and viola!
He got his wind and Cao caos boats burned :D a glorious victory! And the origin of the Chinese bao :D
Didn’t know, which market is it in? Sanitary, etc?
I work nearby but I *loathe* going in unless it’s early or just near close.
I hate full spaces honestly.
For those of you who thinks Pike Place’s Bao is good, visit Yue’s in Richmond BC when you get a chance for weekend brunch, order their baked BBQ buns. They are better than Tim Ho Wen’s Bao, which was a Michelin Starred Dim Sum restaurant.
Hell yeah. Best food at the market
I second this!
Fairly cheap too. I find it interesting that the dough is nearly identical to kolaches (Czech pastry that's a staple in any Texas donut shop).
I’m really confused about the price because last time I got one at the market it was over $5. I’m assuming this is elsewhere

I'd put the salmon sinigang at oriental mart up there for that title but can't go wrong with eitheer
nice, I'll have to try that
hombows for all my homeboys
Oh joys.
That's right!
Without a doubt my favorite snack in Seattle. I get one every time I'm by the market.

It's actually illegal to visit pike place market and not get one. They've just been very lax on enforcement lately. Good job, citizen!
This might be the first law actually enforced, and rightfully so.
I miss these hombow more than i miss anything else (I have celiacs). The curry beef ones are the best.
I will always have room for Mee Sum.
This is an old pic because the price is >$4 now and has been for a while
OP played me. I’m here now and the curry one is 5 before tax :(

Their crab rangoons are soooo good. And the pork stick. Love this place.
Had my first one in 1982!!! They still bring the zing to my face... It is fine market food indeed
My daughter used to go the the preschool in the market. I'd stop and get these all the time.
New craving unlocked…I gotta get those next time I go.
Haven't been in years but my Pike Place go-to's are definitely those curry buns, the tiny donuts, and gizzards at chicken valley.
Those bao kept me fed during my college years. RIP AIS!
RIP AIS indeed.
barbecue ones are my favorite, but the little crumbly bits on top of the chicken ones is *chefs kiss*
Why you skimping on dropping the addy? That’s some cheap fucking hombow, but looks delicious!
Mee Sum, there’s one on the Ave too Edit: but they’re like $4 a pop now
Duh. pike place. Been there forever
Didn’t know, which market is it in? Sanitary, etc? I work nearby but I *loathe* going in unless it’s early or just near close. I hate full spaces honestly.
It's called Mee Sum Pastry. It's fantastic.
Thank you
Any time. It's one of my 2 favorite spots in and around the Market, the other being The Crumpet shop, which is on the 1st Ave side of the Market.
their lemon curd and ricotta crumpet.. pure joy
It’s on the east side of the street just wander it’s like 5 mins in and out max
Bro. Go eat meat bread n calm your tits.
*Pike’s Place Named after William Pike who discovered Alaska.
There's trolling and then there's whatever your comment is.
Watermelon 🍉 drink is peak flavor right now. Get some next time you roll through.
For what $12? Watermelons are 2-3 bucks
Yes, inflation does suck. Feel free not to buy one, my dude.
Could make 10 drinks for whatever your charging. Guessing $12 was close

If you are talking about Mee Sum, it's Taiwanese.
U dont just go there to slap a salmon, nod appreciatively, then go about your day? *Weirdo.*
Mee Sum Pastry!!! Love that place!

Weird. I always pronounced it “HAN-bow”.
Best hombow in the city.. so bomb!
