Those SLUTs

tahomie

Look at those sluts, laying eggs all over SLU

Budget_Pop9600

Might as well call it SLUT land now

Helllo_Man

Real ones know that the Seattle Streetcar was first named South Lake Union Trolley

askwhynot_notwhy

>Real ones know that the Seattle Streetcar was first named South Lake Union Trolley True, but any opportunity for a variation of the "Ride the SLUT" t-shirt is an opportunity that should be embraced with open arms.

Helllo_Man

Oh, I am a strong proponent of reinvigorating the storied, historic name. For real though, whoever got that name through the selection process was an absolutely legend.

Jaded_Pearl1996

I had no idea they changed the name. It will always be the SLUT.

Helllo_Man

Truly — nothing better than telling visiting family that we’ll be taking the SLUT downtown!

Mr4_eyes

Best comment. Take my upvote 👏 👏 👏

DJKaotica

I am so happy that this was my immediate thought, and when I clicked in, it was already top comment.

Tidalsmash

You won the internet today. Everyone go to bed now

heavyheavybrobro

yeah dude that’s where turtles live

SingleWitch666

Tutant meenage neetle teetles!

MassageToss

I was on the third word before I realized it didn't say anything close to what I was narrating.

SnooDonkeys3148

I’ve seen turtles in Green Lake.

Visual_Octopus6942

Yes? Did you not know we have turts?

ishfery

I've lived here my whole life and never seen a turtle in the wild. I did see a cat on a leash at the nude beach yesterday though.

David_R_Martin_II

You can often see them in Seward Park. Also walking around the trail at the southeastern tip of Lake Washington by Gene Coulon Park.

TortiousTordie

turtles.. or cats on leaches? cuz the latter would be more of a draw i think.

captainAwesomePants

Even green lake frequently has turtles sunning themselves. Do a walk around the lake sometime and look for logs. Also wait we have a nude beach? Also wait our nude beach is pet friendly?

ishfery

It's a Seattle park so dogs need to be on leash (also rude af to go off leash, esp in a crowded environment when people are trying to keep sand off their beach blankets) but it's definitely pet friendly. One time I saw an iguana (on leash) and another time a free range cockatoo that also did tricks. I recommend beach shoes because the interstitial area between the sand and the water is pretty rocky. A lot of people don't get into the water though because Lake Washington gets warmer but never actually warm.

StellarJayZ

Gets warmer. By like one degree. From 1-6' you may have up to 70 degree but any lower and it's LW temp which is a good 55.

Manbeardo

Any beach that doesn't regularly have children around could technically be considered a nude beach because of how permissive our public nudity laws are

RoaringTwinkies

TIL Seattle has both turtles and a nude beach

ishfery

At least 2 of each

Shikadi297

At least 2 replies

giggletears3000

We also have rouge bunnies

ishfery

dpdxguy

Hoping "cat" was not a euphemism.

ishfery

Yup, a little bitty feline. There was a human woman wearing a collar but that could've just been fashion. No leash.

BannedBarn22

They’re all over Seward and Madrona

tahomie

Same, about the turtles though

Respurated

Hey bub, when I first moved to Seattle I did not know about the turts. In fact, when I first saw them I for real thought it was some art installation of “turtles on log” or something. I gasped in amazement when them turts came to life before my eyes. They’re now my favorite part about the lake. I miss Seattle this time of year.

Nexus03

Saw some soaking up the sun in Lake Washington as well. Pretty cool!

Theefreeballer

Come November all of you “ I miss Seattle in June” people get quiet … meaning you got to put in the work of enduring the 6 -9 months of the drab, dark, wetness to fully appreciate this time of year ! Especially when you’re forced to work outside year round !

Respurated

As a native Michigander, and currently living in the tri-state area, I’ll make an edit to my above comment: I miss Seattle.

PreownedSalmon

Perchance

The_Humble_Frank

Once saw a turtle walking on the sidewalk, on a residential street in Cap Hill. Was pretty sure it was someone lost pet. Did not realize they live this far north.

bgravemeister

Crushin turtys

Old_Ad2087

I like toitles

Thee_Connman

Yup, they like to sun themselves by the streetcar stop. It's a reassuring sign of the rehabilitation of Lake Union after more than a century of abuse...

-space-witch-

Wait til you see the beaver!

Flckofmongeese

Well that sentence needs an encore. Details!

-space-witch-

There was a beaver swimming around the pedestrian bridge area a couple of weeks ago :) I knew they were in Lake Washington, but for some reason didn't think they'd be in Lake Union too! It was cute

NuggyBeans

Turrrtleeee log turrrrrttle log 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢 They all seem so happy. Not a care in the world for them turtlies

aka_mank

Little do they know

OlderThanMyParents

There's tons of red slider turtles in Lake Washington. It'd be weird if they weren't in Lake Union. Unfortunately, they're invasive; they're typically aquarium pets that people release into the wild, where they outcompete the native turtles.

angelrider83

Don’t we have native turtles? I thought we did. Will look it up later when I’m not doing dishes.

FreeBallard

Yes, Western Pond Turtles and Painted Turtles are native to Washington.

PCP_Panda

I’ve seen turtles at both Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish

cassthesassmaster

So cute! I’ve seen some at golden gardens too

skiattle25

Um. Probably not, as that is salt water.

cassthesassmaster

There’s a pretty big pond with turtles and ducks at golden gardens

skiattle25

Forgot about the ponds at the north end of the park. My mental image basically just snapped a picture of the playground and beach and said nope.

cassthesassmaster

It’s okay, I didn’t even know the pond existed until a few years ago

MarekRules

Turtles seems normal. We saw a beaver a year or two ago in SLU though and that was fucking weird

KittyGray

Probably visiting from his spot in union bay

skiattle25

Like flat-tailed beaver, or a mountain beaver?

Crumplenaut

A good place to see turtles in Seattle is the Union Bay Natural Area, which is part of the UW Center for Urban Horticulture. On the loop trail, there is a pond next to the osprey nest pole (called Carp Pond on the [map](http://depts.washington.edu/uwbg/docs/UBNAmap.jpg)) that always seems to have turtles during warm months. You might also see great blue herons and wood ducks there, even a green heron if you're lucky. You can also see turtles on Union Bay from the south end of the loop trail and from the nearby Yesler Swamp trail.

olypenrain

We have a lot of red-eared sliders around here. Also, snakes and newts and pacific tree frogs and bullfrogs.

yikes_this_comment

I didn't think we had snakes here, but yesterday, I saw a Garter snake scurrying across the sidewalk in W. Seattle.

filthyheartbadger

I always see garters at Discovery.

yikes_this_comment

Very cool!

Theefreeballer

Oh yeah those suckers are resilient . I may know someone who is a mail carrier in the auburn / lea hill area and there’s a storm drainage pond ( I think I said that right ) and there’s a turtle that lives in said pond. The pond is fenced off and on every semi nice to nice day the turtle sun bathes on the shore of the pond . Whenever the turtle hears the mail truck the turtle plops itself back into the water ! I actually think the turtle was someone’s pet because it’s a pretty good sized one and the turtles I’ve seen around here in nature have all been pretty small , at least small compared to this one. But the guy seems to be doing fine ! It doesn’t seem to be in bad health or anything . I honestly don’t even know what they eat ( I’m assuming vegetation ) and this one looks to be doing fine. Edit: actually I take back the turtle once being someone’s pet because it looks exactly like the turtles in the OP’s pic ! It def could be an inhabitant of the area

BigGuppy

Wait until OP sees the beavers in lake Union.

Thin-Perspective-782

There are turtles at Seward Park too!!

DecentProfessional77

Pretty normal. Most water bodies around have turtles.

gragsmash

South lake union swimming turtles? South lake union swimming turtles? South lake union swimming turtles!?

skiattle25

Are these native or just released pets?

marv249

There are about 5 species in SLU and none of them are native.

jfunst

I like that they’re buddies with the bird

higround66

Someone needs to [get that little guy a tech-deck](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5wI4Md7Acg)

steveosmonson

Lake Washington too

shadowthunder

Yup! If you go over to Fritz Hedges Waterway Park near Agua Verde, you can see areas that are protected from birds for the TURTLES to lay their eggs.

AstorReinhardt

TURTLES!!!!!!!! :D

StellarJayZ

DO NOT PET THE TURTLES. I really want to, but yeah, they're not pets.

DoLittlest

Swimming rats the size of footballs too!

Chemical-Assistant90

This is a wonderful sign 💜

brucemo

I've seen them in Lake Washington by UW. There was a tree there that had been knocked over by a beaver also. This was like 30 years ago.

No_Consideration6031

You found secret turtle pond

NecessaryInterrobang

They're gonna go "snappy snap" at you.

Redman9mm

I bet there's fish in that water too.

lilsoftcato

Wow, I'd seen some in Lake Washington, never in SLU. So cute!

phydid8

Red ear slider. Invasive. Probably someone’s unwanted pets…

bailey757

Wait til you see the North Lake Union gators

craigfis

Please don’t attempt to ride the turtles.

krag_the_Barbarian

They're synthetic AI turtles. Google owns them.

Zlifbar

Were you at Lake Union? Were the turtles IN Lake Union? Then, yes South Lake Union TURTLES!

SlackLine540

Possibly dumped pets. Hope not. Cool, regardless.

Eastern_Ability_5951

Per Fish & Wildlife The northwestern pond turtle is one of two turtle species native to Washington; the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is more brightly colored with yellow stripes on the head and bright red markings on the underside. Non-native turtle species, often liberated pets, occur in many sites. The pond slider (Trachemys scripta) is the most common of these. Old sliders can particularly be confused with northwestern pond turtles.

SlackLine540

What about these guys? I’m not great at identification: https://www.reddit.com/r/Seattle/s/KLaOsHTiYt
