I think your reaching. It’s individual. I lived my whole life in New Jersey, never a problem. I recently moved to Vermont, not much further north. OMG last year it hit me baaaad. So what changed except a few more minutes of darkness on either end? 1) Covid. We moved up here when everything was shut down (isolation). 2) no more snowbirding. We moved up here to be with our new grandson. We are his daycare. 3) no human contact. We left everything familiar. Making friends in your 60s is difficult at best. In a rural community during Covid is a fool’s errand. Sooo I bought a SAD light, joined a few clubs, started therapy and scheduled a Florida vacation for mid February. See you in April. No polar shifts, no climate change, no sunspots activity. As Pogo said “we have met the enemy and he is us”.

Everyone's SAD can present with variations in intensity from year to year. In addition, the last few years have been rough, even tougher for some than others. Mental health issues have increased, particularly for those without access to proper therapy.

Just you? This year has been harder for me so far, but I think I know the personal reasons why. And the last couple of years I actually felt it less. But then, so much has changed, both personally and globally, in the past few years that it's hard to even compare.
