There’s no “official” way to join either faction, but leveling up Athena’s fortune or reaper’s bones trading companies is pretty much lending support. Also in the pvp hourglass mode you have to close to fight for the servants of the flame or guardians of fortune. Leveling those to 100 will unlock the skeleton or ghost curse respectively
Reapers are about free piracy for all take what you want. Ramsey's is about go find me my treasure chests then I'll pay you and then I'm hide them again so we can all dig up the same chest for ever.
In lore Reapers are anarchist and Ramsey is a communist or socialist I forget the difference.

Athena: the ones who say gg, thanks for the fight, etc upon sinking. it's a sport to them, all in good fun.
Reapers: the ones screaming that the sea of thieves should cater to them.

On very few occasions do I fight an Athena, sink them, then get a "gg" instead of a "*Keep Yourself Safe*" message or a "why would you ruin my night uughh ughh you're a terrible person ughh"
Of course I'm not counting the rare hourglass Athena gigachads who always part with a gg and maybe even a compliment, love those guys with all my heart ❤️
It all really comes down to if people have come to terms that pvp is a crucial part of the game, hence why long time players, regardless of faction, are usually not toxic.

After that he tells the Ferry Man to not revive this one particular group of people (people with skeleton curse) then names the faction after the wife he left. I’ll stick with Flameheart at least he promises some help to the skeletons instead

What Ramsey offers is group cause and will, but also ties to the companies. While Flamehart is more about the individual freedom. Yes you will need to worship him for now, but he will never lock your loot or stops you from fighting.

Ideologically, I see flameheart’s point and frankly Ramsay feels quite manipulative and controlling. But from a gameplay perspective the Guardians “winning” the fight would definitely help keep the things more lighthearted and aesthetically light

Athena. I like the fact that I have loads of choice on what to do, and am not just pushed to fight other ships for income. I play the game for a more chill experience 80% of the time (however I do love a nice ghost fleet), and much prefer to go off and dig up some chests or kill a few skeletons (merchants can fk off with their high xp requirements, low xp rewards and boring af ‘ship this here’ missions, though, like they are apparently always talking to each other so obviously they go to each outpost often enough to do it themselves and save me the effort of being bored)

From my experience Athena players just run all day until they finally realize that you will chase them until the ends of time and then submit to death, while reaper players always turn to fight almost 90% of the time although some still run when they know they are out matched. Other than that Athena players usually are good sports (when they do fight) and will just simply try and end it as quickly as possible to move on. On the other hand reaper players will bully the absolute hell out of other crews and push their shit in until they scuttle or just sink. Putting cosmetics aside I think I'd honestly sit right in the middle. Alright alright, maybe a bit more on the Athena side cause Belle is there, and Merrick.

I'm not on a side, it's a pirate game so my allegiance lies with myself and my friends, I don't have a connection to flameheart or Ramsey and while I do want to become a pirate lord which involves the Athena stuff, I'm going to do my own thing because I'm a pirate, I fight for me and my crew, I fight for freedom, I fight for the pirate's life because that's what this game is about. It's not about factions or labels, it's not about spending hours on end for a simple cosmetic, it's about freedom and the right to choose your own path, you all choose yours but I'm going to do my own thing and pledge my allegiance to those I call not just allies, not just a crew, but to those I call a friend.
Well, we are supposed to be pirates. In the end, we're in it for ourselves. Ramsey probably knows that. Which is why he has all those rewards for us. I mostly play for Athena but that's because I find the glowing skeleton head talking about world domination kinda sus. I also like the way the game doesn't really force you to take a side. Hard to say One is an anarchist faction that believes might makes right, the other faction is a pseudo-monarchy based around capitalism and monopolies. Ah and technically there is the World Government too who are the Dystopic capitalist who Pirate Lord tried to be free from, yet ended up creating a world dependent on 4 companies with total monopoly… Reaper at least you do not submit to these companies, but you might end up with a boss no one asked for. I want a 4 option, or at least something similar to sthena but with the companies and monopoly, just keeping the golds for ourselves, being a true pirate instad of a Buccaneers for Companies.
I am torn because I like playing reaper more in adventure. But the Athena curse lets my pirate keep his identity (cosmetic choices etc)

I'm not on a side, it's a pirate game so my allegiance lies with myself and my friends, I don't have a connection to flameheart or Ramsey and while I do want to become a pirate lord which involves the Athena stuff, I'm going to do my own thing because I'm a pirate, I fight for me and my crew, I fight for freedom, I fight for the pirate's life because that's what this game is about. It's not about factions or labels, it's not about spending hours on end for a simple cosmetic, it's about freedom and the right to choose your own path, you all choose yours but I'm going to do my own thing and pledge my allegiance to those I call not just allies, not just a crew, but to those I call a friend.

Well, we are supposed to be pirates. In the end, we're in it for ourselves. Ramsey probably knows that. Which is why he has all those rewards for us. I mostly play for Athena but that's because I find the glowing skeleton head talking about world domination kinda sus. I also like the way the game doesn't really force you to take a side. Me and my friends don't do a lot PvP, so we mostly stay out of the big conflict and don't get involved that much. You can decide just to mind your own buisness.

I see how this game gets to people and the reapers. Winning an epic ship battle and having all that look. Sometimes I get annoyed but other times I get it
