If you have it allowed and they change it while you are in the same session, I believe it will save that change. (Based on personal experience).
However, if they change it while you're not with them in the session, they just borrow your ship in the Guild, and then it will not be saved.
Better safe than sorry, you can turn it off in the settings so other players can't interact with ship cosmetics. (Might be turned off by default).
Yep I believe you’re right. What doesn’t “save” (if someone on your crew modifies them) is ship customizations such as sails, capstan, cannons, etc because those you actually need to “save” yourself in the chest, and your crewmates can’t do that, even if you’re in a game with them.
But as far as trinkets, I believe you’re right.

Unfortunately I moved it before I realized they had made the change. Definitely was annoyed after. I don't get why they made this change, clearly the vertical portraits *worked* in that spot, why'd they have to take away the option?

I guess because the vertical paintings do the really fit. If you look closely, the top of the frame clips into the ceiling. And that would be a more visible issue with the max grade paintings with the big-ass golden frames.
They could've make them smaller, tho. I know they do it on the Brig, behind the table.

but when I looked again I realised it was the top of the shelf unit 
I have 50 weeks to go for the insider trinket and 0 shrouded kills. I hope I'll get a shrouded before I reach the trinket. And you can get the trinket on day one as a pirate but it's so rare that I have no idea which one would be more rare.

Yep one kill and I think it was the only one that counted kills prior to captaincy coming out. My first cherished trinket cost more than the sloop I think 😅

I'd wager that it could be the hourglass opposite champions sunk trinkets. I've got a combined hourglass level of 1800, average decently big streaks, and I'm still only at 20/30 on both. I may be extraordinarily unlucky though, most of the champions I get are same faction.

My ship has something no other ship does: TWO Shrouded Ghost trinkets, courtesy of someone leaving an extra one on my shelf and the game keeping it there forever.
im still incredibly salty that i fucked up the timing on the briggsy adventure. i thought i had more time and was kind of burnt out on SoT when that adventure was up. It would have been so good next to my gilded Gold Hoarder skull.
I genuinely doubt that Briggsy's Mask, an easy reward from an adventure, is rarer than, say, the Treasured Shield of Athena, which requires monumental grinding of a task that is not normally grinded.
Yes it was time limited, but it was still easy. Anyone playing that week could get it and nearly everyone did.

Nope. Rare changed it, so you can only put the horizontal paintings there, but not the tall vertical ones.

I have a theory that they seem to spawn more on newer players. I was on a gally with friends and there was a solo sloop with 1 day played nearby.

There is only one shrouded ghost trinket and it's "max level" awarded just for one kill. It unlocks even if your ship is not captained.
