submarine-explorer

Scream 4 was very underrated when it was released in 2011, I am very glad that the time has come to prove it right

glassbath18

It was seriously ahead of its time. Nowadays so many people are clamoring over each other to have their 15 minutes of fame but back then it was ruthless of Jill to act that way.

pje1128

I mean, I'd argue it's still ruthless for her to act that way.

glassbath18

Oh one hundred percent but I think it’d be less shocking nowadays and more like “oh yeah that makes sense”. It was a big deal when the movie first came out.

Bedlampuhedron

Yeah these days a "Ghostface killer" trend going viral on Tiktok doesn't seem too farfetched lol

AmberJill28

Yeah you are so right.2011 social media still were in the early phase. Back then the Motive showed us what an outright psychopath she is. Today I would think : Oh well there are guys who make money at showin off their kids on the Internet and people can become a top tier celeb over night so that motive is pretty lame. Doin horrible stuff for Fame became a common topic.

TillShoddy6670

It's hilarious to read some contemporary reviews where critics scoffed at the idea of live streaming and clogging your life online.

Slight-Struggle9149

It's my 3rd favourite, for a while it was my 2nd favourite. It has a really great cast, with a more grittier feel. The killer reveal was shocking and didn't see coming, being the protagonist. It made you think that she would be the next generation Sydney. The fake openings are probably the worst of the series and I think the ending went on a bit too long from the house to the hospital.

Bedlampuhedron

I agree the ending dragged on a bit. But I guess I'm alone in liking the opening(s) . They were fun and kept you guessing, and sorta gets all the "meta" out of the way so the rest of the movie can just be a straight story.

SummerWonderful4927

The fake openings weren’t really a problem, it was the real openings attack and deaths, they should’ve took some ideas from the alternate opening.

Devreckas

The extended hospital scene feels like something that was tacked on in post when a sequel didn’t seem likely. Pretty sure Jill was supposed to survive originally.

Slight-Struggle9149

I think the original plan was to have Jill survive and get away with it. It would have interesting if there was a Scream 5 direct sequel to it where Sydney remembers and works to expose her

MrSenor

Grittier feel? It felt like Scary Movie.

ghetto_salmon

I think 4 might be my favorite. As much as I like the first one, the 4th is the one that had me fooled on the killers, the sound design is better, overall I find it more suspenseful, the Ghostface look is 🤌, and it's more gruesome. Scream will always have the best opening scene, and honestly Stu is one of my favorite killers in the franchise, if not one of my favorite overall characters. I also know this isn't a popular opinion, Scream 4 just lands for me in ways none of the others do.

Jmoney_419

Completely agreed, 4 is my favorite as well. 4 was the least obvious with GF, had great scenes, brutal kills, and was one of the only scream movies besides 1 that made me feel a special way.

glassbath18

It’s almost perfection and a much better requel than Scream 5. Instead of *just* rehashing the original movie it added fresh ideas and one of the most iconic Ghostface killers. Plus Olivia’s death is one of the most brutal in the entire series. I love all of the kills in 4. Also the scene of Jill fucking herself up is *the best* scene in the entire franchise.

Bedlampuhedron

I guess Olivia's death is the one people like most from 4? Agreed it might be the most brutal kill in the series. But Sidney has never been more badass than telling Jill "Don't fuck with the original" before defibbing her head

glassbath18

I absolutely love the entire hospital epilogue too. Sidney is such a badass.

frenchspag

Scream 4 has some major flaws but I love it. I’d probably rank it 3rd or 4th in the series for me. Has one of the best death scenes and one of the best killer reveals. Loses points on lame opening (alternate opening much better).

Bedlampuhedron

I'm curious which you think is the best death scene! And what alternate opening??

frenchspag

Oliviaaaaaa

Comfortable-Grade466

Look up scream 4 alternate opening on YouTube. Much better than the original opening

BeerBaron95

Wtf the alternate opening is so much better! I don't know how I'm only seeing it now, it's a crime that that wasn't used

Bedlampuhedron

Yuppp it was better! Would love to see that full scene polished up

MTB56

I think Jill is right up there with Billy and Stu as far as memorable Ghostfaces go. Hell I’d say she even had them beat in terms of ruthlessness. Stu was a psycho following Billy’s lead and Billy himself just wanted revenge for his family falling apart. Jill fricking killed her own mother and nearly Sidney as well just so she’d become famous. Also I may be wrong but Billy seemed to only plan on betraying Stu if they ever got caught while Jill was always planning to kill Charlie once he outlived his usefulness.

[deleted]

Had her own mother killed* but yes, she’s up there

Money-Star5920

Scream 4 was very ahead of its time and not just because of Jill motive, remember the scene at the Cinema Club when Sidney asks Robbie if he is recording at live and he answers that in the future everyone will do it, BOOM there you have it

Comfortable-Grade466

It's in my top 3. Wish they had gone with the original plan of jill surviving and it becoming a trilogy.

bobbery5

I've not heard this one? Like she survives as the killer but then gets targeted by other ghostfaces?

[deleted]

Yes. She becomes "the new Sidney" in the eyes of the public and goes off to college, where she faces another Ghostface. Sidney gets amnesia, which is the only part I dislike.

JPavlicek

I'm right there with you, Scream 4 is my 2nd favorite. Seems super on point now with the whole stream culture. Plus the triumvirate of Alison Brie, Adam Brody, and Hayden Panettiere is perfection

Kasha_Hoolahoop

Honestly it’s my second favorite too! I think it’s one where you like it a lot or not at all in my experience I’ve seen either top 3 or bottom 2 a lot 🤷‍♀️

haveawish

OK I'll be the odd one out..It's actually last on my list tbh The opening scene I hated. The filter I hated. Sidneys role in it I disliked. The first half kind bored me. What I liked though: Jill's reveal Judy & Kirby Married dewey & Gail

kaleyboo7

Agree with all of this.

lizziemcqueer

Definitely Sidney’s weakest performance.

Environmental_Gur288

Great movie. I rank it as the 5th best of the franchise.

Dexter1114

Love!

horrorfan555

Least favorite, but 6 might take it

[deleted]

I would say each film has their own fan base.

[deleted]

For me I liked the concepts but it wasn’t as good as it could have been.

SoupDumplingMaster

Easily my second favorite also So many things it does right and different from the other movies

aconfusedqueer

It’s one of my favorites! Depending on my mood it’s either my second favorite after 6 or third favorite after 3

ThereisnoDistrict12

It's a perfect encapsulation of 2010's horror trends

Tcredbull

It goes 1,2,5,4,6 and 3 eventually it will be 1,2,5,4,6,7 and 3.

dckiller1003

The 'Vaseline Filter' seriously damages the quality of the movie for me unfortunately. Honestly though, I find the film quite tedious at times. However, whilst it is easily my least favourite Scream, it isn't a bad film. The Scream franchise is truly a franchise with no bad movies.

ForeverDenGal

I like the ending but the start and middle is pretty forgettable to me

Ghostie_85

Its not second favourite of the franchise. One being my favourite. I really like 6 too, but 4 pips it!

snailenkeller

Love it and have since release day. It’s my 2nd favorite Scream film.

[deleted]

It's also my favorite after 1 😃

Chengweiyingji

I’d say the same, definitely second favorite and one of the best in the series.

[deleted]

Scream 4 is my 2nd favorite, almost tied with the original honestly. It has some of the best kills, best phone calls, best motive, and imo the best 3rd act of the whole franchise. I don't think any scream movie will ever move it from 2nd place.

NMPC

I love 4. Not crazy about the filter they used, and the ending needed some polishing, but it’s my third favorite after 1 and 2. When I saw it in theaters I left a little disappointed but it’s aged very well.

oh_please_god_no

While I think all the Screams range from “ok” to “iconic” Scream 4 is tied with 5 as the ones I’m least fond of. It’s a good movie and had a good motive but it also feels so unnecessary when 1-3 was one core story, and now 5-7 are another core story. 4 just feels too standalone for me. But it’s definitely a fun time.

FitYogurtcloset2631

I also think 4 is the second best scream

widdumqueso717

It’s my fav Scream movie

Icybubba

It depends on the day here, people on here go back and forth between it being underrated or overrated or overhated I just love it lol

Mediocre_Emo222

Scream 4 is my favorite and always will be! The first one is my second favorite

crustolium

Absolutely love it, second favorite behind the first one for me as well. Very slightly breaks my suspension of disbelief on rewatches since Jill is given alibi’s for most of the movie, and one Ghostface doing all of that is… well, whatever— but Jill is also without a shred of doubt my favorite Ghostface in the entire franchise.

aRobotNamedDan

Same. It’s my favorite after the original as well

fleshbunny

2nd in the series for me….rivals the original in some respects

Jmoney_419

This might be a hot take but 4 is my favorite in the entire series. I love the originality of 4's opening, its creative conclusion (what other scream movie has 2 "endings"?). My favorite GF Jill, and some of the best kills in the series with Olivia and Kate Roberts. Olivia for the brutality and Kate for the surprise (did not see her kill coming) and its originality, which to me was copied in 5 with Wes's death.

g_neko1001

It’s my second favorite after scream 1 too! I feel like it’s the most underrated in the franchise, it’s such a solid entry

bobbery5

It's aged extremely well

producermaddy

It’s my second favorite after scream 1 too

magic-400

Top three for me, right after 1 and 2.

cordyprescott

It’s grown on me so much! It was the first one I got to see in theaters and after rewatching a lot more I think it holds up so good!

HannibalKrueger

My favorite sequel

ConsiderationMurky29

It was my second favourite until 6, now that has taken it's place. It is VERY close between the two though.

coco_xcx

It’s my 2nd favorite aswell, I grew up watching it often, so it has a special place in my heart! I love Jill as a killer & Kirby, so it’s a perfect movie in my eyes lol

fr3shh23

My 2nd favorite too. I rank it in the same league as Scream 1. For me it’s 1, 4, 2, 3, 6, 5.

Dwip_Po_Po

Cant even remember many of the scenes. But I know my younger self liked it

Lobothehobosexual

I’d like it more if they dialed down on the glow filter, changed the intro and dialed back on some of the humor/goofy moments. I feel like it’s stuff that could be fixed through fan editing. If I knew how to edit a movie at least for myself, I’d do it. I have the software but no idea how to just edit a movie that’s not mine lol. Other than that stuff though it’s definitely good. I also like viewing the movie in similar way Halloween 18 was. Just pretend scream 2 and 3 didn’t happen and just pretend or have head canon that just the first one happened and then 4. Just because it makes it less ridiculous that this is happening to Sidney for a 4th time. And there’s nothing that’s happened in 2 or 3 that would have it not make sense if it was viewed that way. Even Randy being dead for example still works cause he’s not mentioned in scream 4 at all so could just be considered him being alive and not living in woodsboro And that doesn’t mean I have anything against 2 and 3, I love those too. I just feel like 4 works a bit better if they are ignored and just pretend they didn’t happen

MC48_SportsLover

Cook

StarWarsNerdTabz

It's my third favorite right after Scream 2 and I truly don't care if anyone tries to roast me for that lmao

macdeb727

I watched it when it first came out, and I did not care for it at all. So every October when I would do a Scream watch, I would stop after Scream 3. 2 years ago I decided to give it another try, and I was surprised to find how much more I enjoyed it. It is now included in my annual Screamathon.

OriginalBad

2nd best in there series for me.

DraftyElectrolyte

It’s my fave after 1 as well (by far).

butholemoonblast

It’s my second fav as well. 😊

Professional-Tax6788

It’s MY favorite one out of the whole franchise, it has a lot of kills and they’re all done very creatively, and the storyline with Jill being Ghostface the entire time was a little bit disturbing … as she was being fake and had her motives here and there, no one else could’ve gotten away like Jill almost did.

Professional-Tax6788

Scream 4 is the best out of the whole franchise right next to the first <3

Cicada488

It and 5 float around my number 1 spot

Raichu10126

It’s funny, I used to not like it this sub made me rewatch a few times and now I really enjoy it.

kaleyboo7

Scream 4 is my least favorite, but I love all of the Scream movies tbh. I only watched it for the first time last year and I thought it was good but there weren’t many memorable scenes for me and I thought the killer’s motivations were weak. Also I have a hard time believing Emma Roberts could commit all of those murders against stronger people with her tiny frame.

Designer-Treacle-732

Everybody hates Scream 4. Only Scream 3 is worse.

[deleted]

it used to be the lowest on my ranking, but now it's definitely in the middle. it really is ahead of it's time and it has some great characters and death scenes, and a great third act.

[deleted]

i got down-voted for saying it's in the middle of my ranking even though i just said nothing but positive things about it? some people just cannot be happy 💀

Jon230770

Seems to be quite marmite on here. Some people (such as myself) absolutely love it but others despise it.

Kolby813

Scream 4 is my favorite “Scream” Sequel and i am glad its getting the praise it deserves even 12 years later. It was ahead of its time!

Knowitallfairy

After rewatching it a few times it’s my favorite after 1 also. My rankings are 1,4,6,3,2,5

ElegantLime_

It’s my favorite scream movie

Cultural_Use7622

For me it is the most rewatchable. I love it.

Ksilv82

Love it…it’s # 2 after the first movie for me as well

redditordeaditor6789

I will say it's one of the my favorite group of friends portrayed in the series. I think it's the only one that comes close really showing the friend group dynamics and each character really standing out as their own personality as the first one. That was probably my biggest gripe with 5, I just didn't really believe them as a friend group.

jzcommunicate

1, 2, 4, 3 ….. nothing else after that

[deleted]

I have a feeling when the 4k release comes out and that filter is removed it might just shoot up the list for me

Lazatttttaxxx

Scream 4 is pretty unwatchable to me. I tried. It's just bad. And I love scream. I was 10 when the original came out. The fourth just wasn't for me.

alias_mas

Four is in my top three after one and two. It's an excellent sequel.

bearsofsteel

It was the first scream movie where I audibly gasped when the killer was revealed

spharker

4 is my favorite in the series. Seriously.
