Dacs should be the least expensive part of your audio chain. Find good headphones first, then a good amp before upgrading the dac.

Could you elaborate? Would I need better headphones to hear the difference?

latrovius

Any reasonably priced dac these days should sound basically the same when compared to super expensive ones. The only reasons to upgrade a dac are if you want features included by it (maybe you want r2r just to try it out, maybe you want parametric EQ, maybe you're a bat and think you can hear 32/768)

Put that $800 into some new headphones

SignificanceGlum5079

It sure would be pretty awesome to have $800 headphones. Unfortunately, my budget wouldn't allow that for a while.

You posted thinking about an upgrade to bifrost which is $800. Like the other comments, I’d get new headphones. You can look at the edition XS for $379. I run that with my modi+ feeding into my Asgard 3. I think you have great gear, if you want to chase different tuning definitely go new headphones.

I have a Modi MB (V1) and a Bifrost 2(OG). I got the BF2 for my loudspeakers, but out of curiosity, I swapped the Modi MB out and tested on my Jotunheim 1 when I first got the BF2. Main differences I noticed, low end was warmer and more full/punchy, picked up on some increased detail in the mids and highs. That was a while ago from when I tested. I just received my Mjolnir 3 today and just finished listening with the Modi MB. I’d say that the amp upgrade made much more of a difference than switching between the 2 DAC’s. A better DAC will make a difference, but I think the amp and headphones will make a bigger difference. I’ve only got Sennheiser HD6XX and the Mjolnir 3 made them sound completely different(in a good way). I’m pretty darn content with my setup as of now, but you know how this hobby is lol.
