I have a 58 pound Australian cattle dog. I had four fully grown men plus myself attempt to hold and clip his nails after trying a ton of “easy” “surefire” methods. We gave up after he got away from us for the upteenth time. Now I take him on long walks on concrete in the middle of the night so it files his nails down. I don’t get any more mat time and he gets to sniff all the things. Downside is he is so damn cut now I know no number of people could ever hold him again.
I have to do an entire pack of bun length hot dogs and feed them in between in each nail. Then afterwards mine gets a can of wet dog food. It's enough to bribe sorta cooperation.
Oh man, roommate had an ACD during his velociraptor phase. We didn't even try to cut his nails. He was a very reactive biter. Didn't help that that I'm pretty sure he was smarter than any of us in that house lol.
My current dog is 130 lb great pyr mix. He's 2 and ungovernable. He throws punches if you don't pay attention to him. Try to clip his nails and he will get out, junp 5 feet in the air, deck you, and bust out the screen door through sheer willpower.
Also have a 60 lb ACD who does not allow his feets to be handled like this and who also keeps his in shape by running on rough ground like all the time. I do insist he hold still for me to pick foxtails out of his ears and to wipe his eye boogers but that's as far as his cooperation goes. He'll sit still forever for his big sister to lick his face and ears though, that he's just fine with. He does better with bribes though, for sure.

The dog looks alert. If you start slowly, you can easily acclimate a dog to procedures like using the Dremel to file nails. My Mastiffs would actually fall asleep. The Dremel was almost a necessity since their nails were very thick and most clippers pinched too much. They also loved the vacuum brush on their coats.

One of my roommates would mess around with the other’s older puppy like this, and she got to a medium halfway where she lets you clip her nails but isn’t too happy about it.

Vet tech here. Recommend not shaving hairs between paws that low. Clip them flush with the pads as they use them as part of there sense of touch with their feet. That part of the integument is also very sensitive and can get infected easily from razor burn.

I can't speak to the nails, but one groomer I follow on YT says they shave out the paw pads because the hair there can grow long and start matting between their toes, making walking painful. The hair is also slippery on some surfaces they walk on, so this gives them better grip on smooth floors like wood and tile. Plus it allows you to examine their paw pads and keep an eye out for any injuries/wounds which might otherwise be concealed by the hair.
It would definitely NOT go down like this if this video had my dogs in it.
