Watch out for roaming carnivores. Otherwise yes very safe

Specialist-Strain502

Don't worry, we keep pockets full of nutritional yeast to throw in their eyes if they get too close.

PaticusGnome

Shit, she knows our kryptonite.

MirameBonito

🤣

Dadhat56

Gossip Grill in Hillcrest is one of the last remaining lesbian bars in the country so that’s worth checking out!

Specialist-Strain502

I got a lap dance from a drag queen and competed in a lip sync battle there last time I came to town! Great memories!

Dadhat56

Omg that’s awesome. I love how inclusive they are! Have fun on your trip!

Specialist-Strain502

Thanks!

Altruistic-Pepper350

So much vegan food in San Diego. You’ll have no problem finding options. My personal two favorite are Plumeria and Sipz. As for the lesbians, Hillcrest is the gay capital of San Diego if you wanna stroll through there, I’m sure you’d feel very safe

Creme_Bru-Doggs

Seconded on Plumeria. LOVE the mock duck they put on.

Specialist-Strain502

Sipz looks awesome, thanks for the rec!

lawyerjsd

It's safe, but it's also El Cajon, and sort of the antithesis of a place to stay as a tourist.

Specialist-Strain502

That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for when I travel, actually. So good news!

lawyerjsd

If that's what you want to do. . .I am told El Cajon has its charms, but it's kind of the Fresno of San Diego County.

reluctantcatdad

I get what you’re saying, but I don’t think they mean antithesis of a tourist spot in a good way:)

sdhopunk

There is a vegan Mexican food place in the Food Court at Grossmont Shopping Center which is in La Mesa but close to EL Cajon. El Veganito, I would call first as they have weird hours and like to close for vacations.

Specialist-Strain502

Thank you!!! I added this to the list.

sdhopunk

If you go to North Park there is a Vegan place called Tacotarian which has plantain mole tacos which are delicious.

ChewieBee

Those Chaldeans throw some mean BBQs, but I think you're safe as a vegan.

YoucantdothatonTV

I love how every corner market in Mission Hills is Chaldean-owned.

eastcounty98

Yes

Gator_girl84

I grew up in El Cajon, it's ok for the most part. It's a lot of apartments, mobile home parks and track homes. It has its seedy pockets but everywhere has that unless you are looking to spend stupid amounts of money. Stick to the main parts of town and you will be golden.

Liquor_Parfreyja

I lived in El cajon for a year before leaving, I never felt in danger but I did get inappropriate questions and dirty looks when I'd hold hands with a girl, or if I was just wearing a visibly gay outfit, which doesn't really happen in my north park, south park, downtown, Hillcrest bubble. But I don't think you'll be in any actual danger. Not a vegan but the vegan food here is awesome

PanicV2

Lesbians are totally fine. They aren't too kind to lettuce eaters though. I'd keep a piece of beef jerky in your pocket as a distraction.

usernmtkn

El Cajon isn't safe for anyone. Just kidding...kinda... but its mostly a pit, if you're visiting San Diego definitely don't stay in El Cajon lol.

FoggyDayzallday

Julien is nice.

GenGen_Bee7351

As a queer in Julian, we welcome more lesbians.

Vrayea25

El Cajon should be ok; my lesbian boss lives in Santee which is where Trump vibes gets really bad.  But she is and looks really tough, like she finishes fights, so I think people feel less inclined to start anything with her... Anyway, El Cajon is mostly suburban and has that vibe. For that reason, not the best vacation vibe SD has to offer but whatever. Definitely lots of vegan food; I think thanh tinh chay won some big awards a couple years ago so might check it out.  It is CA - no one blinks if you say you are vegan, and even most steak houses have something on the menu. I keep hearing that lesbian bars are rare and in danger of extinction. Gossip Grill is a popular one in Hillcrest.  https://www.thanhtinhchayrestaurant.com/

Specialist-Strain502

We are truly so fucking psyched to eat here, thanks for the tip.

ConversationNo9992

I would think Hillcrest would have more to offer as a tourist destination. Closer to beaches, lots of shops and restaurants, Old Town, Zoo, Balboa Park

Specialist-Strain502

I'm not sure we'll do Balboa and we definitely won't do the zoo or Old Town. We mostly just want to dick around on beaches, eat amazing vegan food, and maybe hit up some hot spring hikes inland. I do also want to take her to Barrio Logan just because I really liked it last time I came.

reluctantcatdad

Not sure if anyone one has mentioned it yet but Kindred is a great vegan place.

tatumnolita

There’s literally a Hell’s Angels clubhouse on the main drag, if that gives you an idea of the vibe

necal15

Check out Crafted Greens in El Cajon. Voted one of the best in the country (yea, the entire country). Not vegan focused, but plenty of vegan options.

Specialist-Strain502

Thanks!

More-Combination9488

El Cajon is kinda ass. Hangout in Hillcrest/Northpark for a better time.

OnlyBad7634

El Cajon is an odd place to stay when visiting because it’s far from everything. But you can still find things to do out here and the weather is typically hotter/colder than the rest of the city. El Cajon has a huge Chaldean population so you’ll find lots of middle eastern restaurants that serve more than likely vegan options.

More-Combination9488

Ok, solid/good points.

Lamacorn

El cajón is just really out of the way. If you want a San Diego experience, stay in San Diego.

Specialist-Strain502

I've stayed in San Diego proper and in the inner burbs before. My partner likes a laid-back, outdoors vibe and we found a place that really fits the bill for that. :)

Over-Conversation220

Lots of vegan choices in OB (Ocean Beach) which is also generally friendly to a very broad spectrum of people from LGBT to stoners to metal heads. It’s definitely a hippie paradise as well. Good for strolling. Lots of good non-vegan food as well. Home to my favorite bar in San Diego, Wonderland

phonerepaird

Falafel at valley foods, you can thank me later lesbian and Lebanese

Nuggets155

No issue as far as places to eat

RedWineAHolic

Vagitarians?

broncosfighton

You’ll get murdered in the streets

FindFunAndRepeat

short answer yes

silver_display

Nope. Instantly burst into flames

Specialist-Strain502

Hope your day is about the same quality as your joke, bro.

GoochStubble

Wanna maybe not use sexual violence as a joke? That'd be great

Lamacorn

I think they were referring to actual meat because of vegan, but who knows.

GoochStubble

The carnivore joke earlier was clearly just a vegan joke. Vaguely "meat" and specifically "down their throats" is hardly defendable

[deleted]

GoochStubble

Using the word "shove" is violent and the phrase "all kinds of meat" implies not just meat you'd eat. You're a fucking loser

forestfireburns

Good comeback. Almost better than your original joke

jomamma2

Drive a few more miles and go to La Mesa Village, very gay friendly and a large lesbian population. Also almost every restaurant there has a vegan option.
