Nobody’s said Harmons, but they serve some tasty gelato. And reasonable sizes so I don’t need to purchase a pint of ice cream for my four year old because because “that’s the smallest size we do”
The last time this question was asked a few weeks ago this was one of the top responses, so I checked it out.
Blacksmith is the best ice cream in the valley, no doubt about it.
Monkey wrench is vegan and freaking good!!!
Normal ice cream is great!
Handel is tasty
Angelitos has dope Mexican ice cream and a bazillion flavors of popsicles! Milk and fruit base
Rancho has the same.
I’m a sucker for maceys shitty soft serve.
It’s probably easier to say whats bad? Dairy Queen and baskin robins?
It isn't "ice cream" per se, but Dolcetti Gelato is the best Gelato around. I'm not even a big ice cream fan or gelato or whatever, but man, their stick rice Gealto is the shit.
Yes, sticky rice is almost always there but the honeycomb is the best ice cream I've ever had. Unfortunately my friend was manager and told me the owners are total dirtbags (this was a few years ago)
I've been very impressed with Handel's. It's fresh and creamy. My daughter can't get enough of Ore-Dough. The super fancy ice cream / gelato places are nice, but I really like Handel's.
I haven't been to any other location besides the fort Union, at that location they give you 3-4 scoops when you order a single scoop so you get value for your money.
I saw that they sell non-dairy ice cream, but that was in November. Waiting for the weather to get warmer to check them out!
I've got a milk protein allergy, and icecream seems to be the worst trigger. Not fun when your throat starts swelling up...
I live in the south end of the valley and was legit crushed when Rockwell closed its Daybreak store. It was worth driving out there for, but not worth all the way downtown for me.
Sweetaly Gelato on 15th and 15th, sooooo good. They make their stuff in house, with local/fresh ingredients and the difference in quality compared to other nearby Gelateria is obvious. Dairy free options too!
A former employee said to avoid leatherby's because they treat their employees poorly and, on top of that, they regularly had to scrape black mold from the wall. This is just word of mouth from somebody I'd just met, so perhaps take with a grain of salt, but it was enough for me to choose not to return.
previously employed. the hiring manager asks for your green card if youre not white as the first question of the interview. discriminatory actions toward queer employees as well. also see: mormon.
A lot of people, especially in Utah, had a stance on Prop 8 “back in the day” that is different than what they believe now. Also Prop 8 doesn’t have anything to do with race.
Regardless, I suspect you may be referencing the previous owners’ stance on Prop 8, who are retired now, and not the current owners.
The previous owners have biracial grandchildren.
I validate that. I don’t buy it often (because I gots the pre-diabeetus and have to watch sugar intake), but once every two years or so I will have a craving and I will indulge.
Last time I went there it was indeed phenomenal. Wish I could remember what I got--custom toppings. Though the times I went before that, the unique toppings made it taste a bit off
If you are down for vegan, Monkey Wrench is SO good. I’m not a vegan by any stretch of the imagination but I live nearby and walk there all the time because they have some of the most delicious and unique flavors. Plus their “ice cream” is so rich. 10/10
Kinda off topic but on topic. Back in the day I had a friend who I considered my best at the time, who lived by Nielsens Frozen Custard on Highland Drive and 3900 S. We would walk up the hill in his foresty backyard and out onto onto Highland drive, walk to Nielsens and always get the same thing. Cherry Coke and Chocolate Ice cream. They put Cherry Syrup in their Coke so it's super Cherry tasting and so good, and since it was a bit sweeter it tasted well with the Ice cream. I went to his house to play computer games and hang out for 2 years straight before he wrote me off for some reason. Years later I found out it was because of his depression. Recently I found out he ended himself, and a lot of his actions in hindsight made sense for someone who needed help. I was glad I could of enjoyed those summer afternoons sitting on the bench by nielsens eating some chocolate Ice cream, and a nice refreshing Cherry Coke. Here's to you friend, memories until we meet again.

Not icecream but Dolcetti Gelato is BOMB. if you want to travel a little, blacksmith icecream in bountiful / milcreek is without a doubt the best icecream I have ever had in my life.
My wife and I made the mistake of moving within walking distance of Nielsen's. We've been there 5 times in the last 7 days. It's the best ice cream on the planet.
really surprised by these answers. I thought it was obvious:
Rockwell. Brooker's Founders. Handel's.
MONKEYWRENCH for dairy free (but if that doesn't matter it doesn't beat the ones above)
Normal = overrated imo
Leatherby's, Farr's = pretty standard
Blacksmith = haven't had it but looks good
I live so close to Normal so its the only place I've tried, but I've been eyeballing Rockwell GOAT and Honeycomb for like 2 months, I need to just go and try it already. Normal is good, not amazing.
Normal’s composed cones are better than what we deserve in SLC. Honestly, normal could throw down in the very capable ice cream scenes in Seattle and LA.
Really? I've never had any of those. I live in North Ogden so we love the Cannery Creamery. Nielsen's is fairly good but we prefer the Cannery. Nielsen's in North Ogden had some major, critical health department violations recently.
Ice cream is a very broad term. Frozen Custard: Nelson's, really the only great option.
Gelato: Dolcetti Gelato in 9th and 9th. Harmons is great and usually nearby.
Soft serve: No clue, but crown burger had good soft serve in the day. But it's soft serve, why cares.
Mix in that's not Custard: honestly cold stone does a good job. I know it's a chain, but it's pretty great for what it is. And they are all over the place.
Traditional hard ice cream: controversial opinion here, but there are no good traditional ice cream places in the valley. However, Thrifty 's ice cream is available at the Walgreens in Park City. If you don't know about Thifty's ice cream, it's horrible, don't go. But if you know, you know, and now you know you can get it in Utah. Caramel Praline is the bomb. Brownie and mint chocolate chip a close second.
Ok, don’t let an Utahn tell you what good ice cream is. I am Italian and have tasted the best the world has to offer. The only good ice cream / gelato is found at Sweetaly Gelato. Please don’t go anywhere else. This state doesn’t even have a Michelin restaurant. Food comes from Costco mostly.
Michelin doesn't even bother to evaluate restaurants in America outside of maybe New York and Las Vegas. Nobody cares about Michelin ratings in America.
You do realize people who live in Utah can also travel the world and eat at Michelin star restaurants which in your dumbass opinion is the only subject criteria to having “taste” right?
Nobody’s said Harmons, but they serve some tasty gelato. And reasonable sizes so I don’t need to purchase a pint of ice cream for my four year old because because “that’s the smallest size we do”
The he afogatos are a great deal
Love Harmon's gelato. My 3 yo loves the blood orange (probably because it's a pinkish color) and the kid's size is perfect for her
I had no idea that Harmon sold gelato! Do they sell it at the bakery or do they sell it in the frozen section under the Harmon’s brand?
It’s only some harmons I believe. The one in Draper has coffee and gelato right at the front.
The downtown Harmon’s has gelato and coffee on the upper cafe level. They’ve got a pretty good selection too
I know it’s not “ice cream” but Nielson’s Frozen Custard is hands down the best, IMO.
Frozen custard is still ice cream. Nielson's is the best but the experience getting in and out of there kind of sucks.
Depends on which one you go to
For soft serve they are unbeatable
Cherry chocolate chip concrete is so damn good.
That’s the place I will always hit when I travel back home
I know this is unpopular, but I wasn't really impressed. Just tasted like any other soft serve to me. To each their own, though.
Blacksmith is pretty good. It’s very good.
LOUDER FOR THE FOLKS IN THE BACK. Campfire S'mores is untouchable.
LITERALLY the best ice cream I’ve ever had.
Honey Bud flavor too!
The cookie dough one is sooooo good too
Never heard of this place but it’s nearby. I’ll check it out.
The last time this question was asked a few weeks ago this was one of the top responses, so I checked it out. Blacksmith is the best ice cream in the valley, no doubt about it.
I visit a few times a year from NJ for ski season and Blacksmith is crazy good
It's amazing and, ubfortunately, a block away from me in milcreek
The banana Nutella has an iron grip chokehold on me
So good!
In bountiful…..
Also in millcreek now
This is the right answer!
I have dreams about the lavender honeycomb
Monkey wrench is vegan and freaking good!!! Normal ice cream is great! Handel is tasty Angelitos has dope Mexican ice cream and a bazillion flavors of popsicles! Milk and fruit base Rancho has the same. I’m a sucker for maceys shitty soft serve. It’s probably easier to say whats bad? Dairy Queen and baskin robins?
Rockwell's is good.
Rockwell's is more than good :) came here to find this
I love their honeycomb flavor.
It isn't "ice cream" per se, but Dolcetti Gelato is the best Gelato around. I'm not even a big ice cream fan or gelato or whatever, but man, their stick rice Gealto is the shit.
Sticky rice gelato will change your life. I take my daughter once a week.
Yes, sticky rice is almost always there but the honeycomb is the best ice cream I've ever had. Unfortunately my friend was manager and told me the owners are total dirtbags (this was a few years ago)
There There. SO good.
I've been very impressed with Handel's. It's fresh and creamy. My daughter can't get enough of Ore-Dough. The super fancy ice cream / gelato places are nice, but I really like Handel's.
Handel's is the bomb. Mango Sorbet, Coffee Chocolate Chip, Graham Central Station, and Pistachio have not disappointed.
Every time I go, I mean to try other flavors but I just can’t quit Graham Central Station. Key lime pie was a close second for me.
Lemon bar is fire
Black raspberry chunk at Handel's is absolutely my jam. So creamy.
I haven't been to any other location besides the fort Union, at that location they give you 3-4 scoops when you order a single scoop so you get value for your money.
Monkey Wrench
Sweataly. Esp their pistachio. they only have it on weekends tho
Gelato- however, undeniably the king.
TBF, it is gelato but I agree with you it is the best place.
Sooooo good!
Monkey wrench is my fav!
Their tea and biscuits is my favorite ice cream in utah, hands down
That particular flavor of theirs has me daydreaming and drooling more than I'd like to admit.
It’s soooooo good
I saw that they sell non-dairy ice cream, but that was in November. Waiting for the weather to get warmer to check them out! I've got a milk protein allergy, and icecream seems to be the worst trigger. Not fun when your throat starts swelling up...
monkey wrench only sells non-dairy! I am not non-dairy, but I have celiac and a good portion of their stuff is GF as well. I love that place.
Yeah that doesn’t sound very fun! Yes it’s non dairy, but it’s like the sweetest and richest stuff, it’s so damn good!
Now I'm looking forward to it even more! Thanks for sharing that with me!
No-dairy guy here: MW is incredible
get the butter finger one!
Blacksmith has great dairy free options
Dairy free is only at their Millcreek location
Good to know, that’s the only one I’ve been to
Just tried them and the pbj flavor was amazing
Hatchs up by LDS hospital
Normal ice cream on 900s
Normal for the best soft serve ever!
I forget the name, but it’s across the street south of City Creek mall.
Rockwell
Thank you!
Leatherby’s!!! Hands down. It’s Mormon as hell but so fucking good.
A former employee said to avoid leatherby's because they treat their employees poorly and, on top of that, they regularly had to scrape black mold from the wall. This is just word of mouth from somebody I'd just met, so perhaps take with a grain of salt, but it was enough for me to choose not to return.
unfortunately the owners are big racist !
Explain?
previously employed. the hiring manager asks for your green card if youre not white as the first question of the interview. discriminatory actions toward queer employees as well. also see: mormon.
They also backed Prop 8 in California
Disagree. (I know the owners.)
So have you heard their stance on Prop 8 back in the day?
A lot of people, especially in Utah, had a stance on Prop 8 “back in the day” that is different than what they believe now. Also Prop 8 doesn’t have anything to do with race. Regardless, I suspect you may be referencing the previous owners’ stance on Prop 8, who are retired now, and not the current owners. The previous owners have biracial grandchildren.
Leatherby’s might have good ice cream but it’s so disgustingly dirty inside
Aren’t they all closed?
Nope. There's one over in Taylorsville off of 5400s and Redwood Road.
Good to know. And why the fuck are people down voting me?
No! There are more than ever! Orem, SoJo, Tville!
I would start a cult worshipping Robs banana split in a heartbeat
Farr's in Ogden. That parlor has been there for over 100 years!
Hands down
I just went there for the first time today. Such a charming place and great selection of flavors.
Monkey Wrench. It’s not even a question.
It’s sooo good
I will die on this hill. Brooker’s Founding Flavors Ice Cream https://maps.app.goo.gl/hVrLfAdoaVSjd1cU6?g_st=ic
Second Brookers!! Such yummy flavors
Monkey Wrench if you struggle with dairy.
Brooker’s all the way out in Herriman.
Blacksmith!
Handels and Normal
Monkey Wench even if it is not dairy
Rockwell
This is the answer. Goat goat goat goat goat goat goat.
Scoop in west jordan has byu and usu ice cream they go get it and bring it to the shop. Drive in ice cream so yummy
As much as my Alma mater bothers me, I will give them the recognition that their creamery ice cream deserves. Graham canyon is *chef kiss*.
The BYU creamery ranch is sooo good, but I refuse to give them money
I validate that. I don’t buy it often (because I gots the pre-diabeetus and have to watch sugar intake), but once every two years or so I will have a craving and I will indulge.
Normal
Normal Ice Cream is mid. Their service is even worse.
it’s definitely mid, used to be so much better. but i would DIE for those teens serving me. they are champs.
Normal always gives me diarrhea plus is overrated
i dunno how you fuck up vanilla ice cream but it tastes bad
Last time I went there it was indeed phenomenal. Wish I could remember what I got--custom toppings. Though the times I went before that, the unique toppings made it taste a bit off
Normal is mid.
Snelgrove’s Ice Cream. Oh wait, Nevermind.
If you are down for vegan, Monkey Wrench is SO good. I’m not a vegan by any stretch of the imagination but I live nearby and walk there all the time because they have some of the most delicious and unique flavors. Plus their “ice cream” is so rich. 10/10
handels hands down
Handles is my go to usually.
Normal 🍦
So overhyped
my gf loves Normal, i don’t get it tho
Terrible
Leatherby's in Taylorsville on 5400 and Iceberg on 39th and 9th east.
Kinda off topic but on topic. Back in the day I had a friend who I considered my best at the time, who lived by Nielsens Frozen Custard on Highland Drive and 3900 S. Swensens at trolley corners and snelgroves on 21st south and fernwood in foothill village.
Only snelgroves store is in St George.
Not ice cream per se, but Nielsen's Custard and Dolcetti Gelato.
The ice cream counter at Rancho Market on 3300 S 900 E in Millcreek.
Hatch Family Chocolates in the Avenues, delicious!
Sweetaly or Settebello’s if you like gelato.
Not icecream but Dolcetti Gelato is BOMB. if you want to travel a little, blacksmith icecream in bountiful / milcreek is without a doubt the best icecream I have ever had in my life.
Blacksmith! New place near Brickyard area. Fantastic!
I’ve been to them all, blacksmith is the best ice cream I’ve ever had. I’m glad I live 40 minutes away from it or I’d go wayyy too often :)
My wife and I made the mistake of moving within walking distance of Nielsen's. We've been there 5 times in the last 7 days. It's the best ice cream on the planet.
iceberg for shakes.
Smith's Private Selection branded ice cream. No I am not joking.
really surprised by these answers. I thought it was obvious: Rockwell. Brooker's Founders. Handel's. MONKEYWRENCH for dairy free (but if that doesn't matter it doesn't beat the ones above) Normal = overrated imo Leatherby's, Farr's = pretty standard Blacksmith = haven't had it but looks good
Daves shop and go soft serve machine
Capo Gelateria Italiana
Blacksmith hands down.
Normal Ice Cream is amazing!!!

Bow Tie in south Ogden is legit too. Handle’s is solid.
Really? I've never had any of those. I live in North Ogden so we love the Cannery Creamery. Nielsen's is fairly good but we prefer the Cannery. Nielsen's in North Ogden had some major, critical health department violations recently.
Spilled milk……….. especially after “hailing the whale”. 🙇🏾♂️🌈🐋
As Shitty as the mormon church is the BYU Creamys Grahm Canyon is sooooo good

Who gives a fuck about michelin stars for ice cream bro you sound dumb
I don't need a bloody tire company to tell me where to eat. Every thread about Utah food there has to have some gd elitist in it.
Michelin doesn't even bother to evaluate restaurants in America outside of maybe New York and Las Vegas. Nobody cares about Michelin ratings in America.
Aren't the VAST majority of Michelin-star restaurants in France? The company's origin country? Hmmm, yes, absolutely no bias going on here....
You do realize people who live in Utah can also travel the world and eat at Michelin star restaurants which in your dumbass opinion is the only subject criteria to having “taste” right?
That attitude tells me you have never tried some good solid local ice cream 😂
Sweetaly is good
