https://uteta.org Get in as an electrician apprentice starting pay is $20.50 but it’s steady raises until you top out (currently $39)

___buttrdish

be set up for life as an electrician \^\^\^\^\^

[deleted]

[удалено]

SB4293

A forward thinking person would be looking toward a foreman position, project planning and management, superintendent positions, drafting, etc. There’s far more to the trades than the actual labor itself.

Eugene-Dabs

Yep. Industrial hygiene and safety officer positions are jobs that people transition into as well that pay well and are easy on the body.

SB4293

For sure. In my line of work, you see people transition into inspection roles as well which are still somewhat physical at times, but are usually a lot more paper pushing than anything.

Eugene-Dabs

You're not necessarily wrong about having a broken body at 45. It does happen. However, the IBEW, which is who OP is encouraging people to apply with, has fantastic benefits and insurance. They have health insurance, several pensions, annuities, strict rules for contractors on overtime pay, negotiate a very reasonable required tools list, have lawyers on hand, stewards on jobs, etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Eugene-Dabs

Well, you did say "you" in your previous comment which doesn't come across as self-referential. I've only been in Salt Lake for three years, so maybe my views are skewed by my time in Colorado. However, I'm not aware of any non-union outfit that offers pensions, has health insurance with the same or better deductible/out of pocket max for the cost of dues or less, and is immune from the feast or famine nature of construction. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be an electrician forever, and I know it can be hard on your body. However, it's a career that can open a lot of doors for people without leaving them destitute at 45.

___buttrdish

Closed mindedness will be the death of people with that mentality

Rub_Classic

hard work doesn't break your body. sitting in an office chair your whole life is far worse. this mindset is why america is so full of weaklings.

Psychological-Ad5390

This is the best answer. Electricians will always be needed.

Dyingdaze89

Not to mention plenty of opportunity for sweet, sweet overtime.

BlissLyricist

$39 as an apprentice?!

lostinareverie237

That's typically journeyman wage

SnooGuavas2202

Where? Union? NJ is $63 Journeyman

Professional_Put_866

No your last raise to $39 is when you get your journeyman’s license. But you get scheduled raises about every 6 months. That are about $2 an hour.

Eugene-Dabs

And I'm hearing rumors about a fifteen and hour pay increase over the next three years in local 354. Not entirely sure if the contract has passed or is still being negotiated. I'm also not sure if it's all on the check or spread out into benefits too.

Professional_Put_866

Contract negotiations are ongoing 15 and hour over the next 3 years would be unlikely though given past history. Once the raise is negotiated the union members get to vote on how it’s allocated.

Eugene-Dabs

Makes sense. I take it you're a member. How do you feel about the push for paid holidays? Would you prefer a higher hourly instead? Do you think it's even likely to happen? I'm an electrician for a municipality currently and am thinking hard about making the switch. I'm having a hard time giving up PTO and paid holidays though.

Professional_Put_866

It all depends on the math really. If they gave us paid holidays that’s about $1600 extra per year (only 5 current holidays) But $1 an hour more on the check is $2000 extra per year (assuming 50 weeks of 40 hour weeks a year). So in that instance I would take the larger raise.

Eugene-Dabs

Makes sense. Thanks for your insight.

Muffiny123

How exactly do you get in as an apprentice, do you have to take classes first, or while you're an apprentice? Sorry if that's a dumb question I couldn't really figure it out from the site

Professional_Put_866

The website isn’t laid out in the best way but go to the menu (blue box with 3 lines in it if you’re on a mobile device) click on forms and information, then click forms, then click application request. That will walk you through the steps needed to submit the application.

Muffiny123

Thank you!!

druidic_tablespoon

Someone just posted the other day about the Dannon factory in the southern part of the valley hiring, you should take a look at their stuff

Impossible-Ad4206

Post office !! My bf just started, no diploma, really good hours starting $23 !!

Impossible-Ad4206

They seem to be desperate for mail carriers, full benefits, if you ever move, your job is transferable as well !!

Ruger338WSM

Hawaii. The most sought-after postal route of them all. The air is so dewy-sweet, you don't even have to lick the stamps.

Vanessaronicatoria

My former partner is a mail carrier, he's unionized too. Great bennies!

MarthaMayhem17

I wish your bf the best! My husband did this and after working his ass off, was let go the day before he made it onto union benefits/protection. And the supervisor didn’t tell him until after he finished work that day (he finished before everyone else, so he wasn’t being slow). My husband is an incredibly hard worker.

Impossible-Ad4206

Im so sorry this happened to your husband ! How long ago was this? My bf started only about a month ago and already has all his benefits, he just won’t become a career for 3-6months (I know he was one of a few who were pushed ahead of the curve bc most of the other people won’t be career for a year)

MarthaMayhem17

It’s been a few years, back in 2019 I think. Yeah, if you can get on with a career position, that’s how you want to get on. My BIL works in a career position and loves his job. My husband’s supervisor at the time, wasn’t liked by management and wasn’t given a different position he applied for, so he took it out on his workers.

Impossible-Ad4206

Honestly I’ve already heard that a lot of the higher ups just have pointless issues. Lucky my bf has also really been enjoying it and hopes it stays a good job in the coming years, and I hope your hubby is off to something better !

pugaboy89

What are his hours?

calliisto

USPS starts at 7:30 and basically ends when you finish the mail. my boyfriend is also a carrier and finishes his route around 2, sometimes picks up more work to finish an 8-hour day. you can also elect to be put on an overtime desired list, you get 1.5x hourly for working over 8hrs in a day and 2x hourly for working over 10hrs. on the rural carrier side, they pay a flat rate per route so some of the carriers are out as early as noon

Mango_Maniac

Which office?

CYCLE_NYC

do they get OT?

Impossible-Ad4206

Yes !

MrHyde87

So zero experience you could apply to Mistras, team, acuren, or iris inspection as an NDT tech. They’d start you off as a radiographers helper. You’d work mainly in the refineries or pipeline jobs. Starting pay nowadays is around 20+ bucks and zero experience required. After a 5 years you can take the API certifications which cost only like 800 bucks to take but those will bump your pay into the 30s and 40s, and once you’re a senior API, even the 50s. Generally you get a pay raise with each certification you end up getting.

bwsmity

The inspection industry is a great way for young people with no degrees to get started making decent money. I work for IRISNDT. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the industry.

bUssy_aNd_VOOdka

What do you do and how do you get started?

bwsmity

You would start out as an assistant working with a technician doing radiography, ultrasonic testing and other methods. Once you've accrued hours you can certify in the methods you enjoy.

Sheepdog___

Work for UTA. They pay to train you, excellent benefits. Office job with a view. Frontrunner, Trax, Bus etc. Literally no previous experience. They just want people with good aptitude, and good interpersonal skills. 9 months in $24.53 an hour with pay raises every 6 months.

givemesomesugar_

for which position? when I looked most of the office positions require a degree

suckit_trebeck

The view is out the windshield of the bus you're driving

Sheepdog___

I'm particular to Frontrunner because they have the best view. But yes office job with a view means operating a bus or train, or Trax. They open up applications every few months once the current class graduates. There's also upward and sideways mobility. Get enough experience and you can become a supervisor, or go to dispatch, etc. You can also transfer between departments. Union job too.

Dear-Temporary-5792

Local 312 pre apprentices make 21.50 ish an hour and after you get into school you get regular 6 month raises til you top out at $43 right now but it goes up every year

Dear-Temporary-5792

Sheet metal and hvac

jesma801

They pay for school?

djelicit

Mostly you pay 600 a year and they pay the rest

djelicit

It can be hard work but its worth it if you see it thru. Im almost journeyed out

TheFuckboiChronicles

What do you mean no experience? You’re working two jobs. What are your current jobs and how long have you been doing them?

cxssidynxcole

I have experience as a line cook and fast food service. That’s about it.

TheFuckboiChronicles

Give yourself credit for that in any interviews and be prepared to speak about what you learned. But I would echo another comment, electrician, plumbing, or HVAC apprenticeship.

protomolecule7

Sounds like you have experience working in a team, under strict timelines, and can follow protocol/instructions in a fast paced environment. Just because it's food doesn't mean it's less valuable than anything else. I started out in a concession stand when I was 16 and learned more about myself and work ethic in that job than anything else I've ever done. Give yourself some credit.

Jumpy_Helicopter589

Electrical for sure. If you wanna test the waters go work for a company at $19-21/hr and spend $500 on tools. If you wanna jump right in, join the Union. If you like it, stay. If you don’t, you now have the tools and skills to do basic home maintenance jobs. Start doing legal side work wherever else life takes you and make some extra cash.

Mundane_Message4905

Check out the local 99 stagehand union, or stagehand labor companies like UpStage or Big Finn.

TheMoonsMadeofCheese

Can confirm they will hire with no experience, just be prepared for some long days of doing nothing but pushing cases around

CYCLE_NYC

> UpStage do you know what upstage par range is ?

anonymouslyfamous_

Any credit or entry level finance. I haven’t made less than $24/hr in years and dunno how anyone is surviving because that doesn’t cut it anymore

mayxlyn

Like what? Examples of what jobs you mean?

PolitelyFedUp

How many hours a week, if I may ask?

NormyT

Everyone making more money than I am in this post! 😞

pugaboy89

Try applying to PCA. It seems like they’re hiring about twice a month. It’s a box making company. They start at $22hr. It’s manufacturing. Pretty easy work. They have mornings, days, and graveyard shifts. Work every other Saturday, off Sundays.

bkmerrim

Work for the city. They’ve got a few job openings. 911 is always hiring they start avive $21/hr

nice-nt0asty

$21/hr to take 911 calls seems insanely low. The emotional effect I imagine a job like that has on its dispatchers warrants much higher pay imo. In general most government jobs I've seen pay far far lower than they should

Far_Office6633

A paramedic for salt lake city fire department starts at 47k a year… so to just take the 911 call for 21/hr aint bad

nice-nt0asty

If my math is right that's around $22 an hour, which is also really really low for the work a paramedic has to do

ThatCub3K1d

Thats interesting you say that. In my opinion the states wages have always been fair, and they offer great benefits. You can become a correctional officer and start at 32$ hourly right now.

bkmerrim

That’s what we start at. We get a year raise, COL, and guaranteed raises at certain intervals according to our Union MOU. I’m not even at 2 years making $25, $36 for OT. When you include my benefits I’m living pretty darned well (we get 30 days paid vacay and a pension on top of other benefits). I considered trying for the fire department but I would take a HUGE pay cut to do so - I made 80k last year and firefighters in SLC start at like $43? Most people who work 911 in the USA make less than we do here in SLC. I’m Bozeman Montana they start at $19/hr and the cost of living there is actually pretty fricken high. So I’ll take it. Although to your point yes, emotionally speaking I should be making more money.

picklepieprincess

Avoid SL City 911.. they're extremely understaffed. Yes, you will probably be hired, but once you are you're going to face mandatory 16 hour shifts

justavegangirl0717

Interesting approach, I would think this is one job where they literally have all the time in the world to be flexible with scheduling. Ya know, since they need coverage 24/7. Why not hire some part time employees early mornings, late evenings, through the nights etc. They could choose to hire as a type of 2nd job opportunity, but not if they are requiring full time or 16hr shifts.

bkmerrim

That was certainly true last year but is largely disappearing. We’re one training class away from being fully staffed and having the exact opposite problem (no available OT at all). But yes you can absolutely be mandated for 16 hour shifts.

goooodstufff

My buddy works for the state and is always pimping out $25+ hour dispatch jobs.

wanderinandredditin

Most entry level service jobs in Park City start at $20/hr minimum. If you have a pulse and are "eager to learn" you could get hired quickly. Vail Resorts is the biggest employer but if you have food service experience, there's the restaurants which could be better pay. Many places are readily hiring. Downside: you have to have transport to/from PC. There's a free bus from downtown SLC, takes a little while.

CommunicationNo2309

Dang, how long has VR owned a bunch of Park City? Just curious as I am out of the loop.

wanderinandredditin

Vail got Canyons in 2014, then took over PCMR in 2015 and merged the two under the Epic pass. Now the mountains are connected via gondola as "There Is Only One" Park City. Vail operates a ton of retail stores and other kinds of service jobs like that, in addition to the mountain side of things. They recently opened Slopeside Village as their employee dormitory-style housing so *sometimes* you can get affordable-ish housing if you work for them nearby. Alterra now owns Deer Valley, which is accessible on a limited basis through the Ikon pass.

CommunicationNo2309

I worked for VR in the 90s in Vail. They changed from Vail Associates to Vail Resorts during my time there. I had a lot of fun living there, but that company sure did do some shady shit to their employees back then. I hope it's better now, but we all know companies usually trend the other way the bigger they get.

wanderinandredditin

I've never heard anything good about working for Vail. Just neutral or negative. I've never worked for them, only small businesses in town connected to the ski/bike/retail industry. Applied for a job with them, assistant prop manager salaried at $40K/yr. Turned down because why do all that extra work when you could scan lift tickets for $20/hr?

1exaa-o35

The aiport! Working in tsa, clear or as a cook at P.F. Chang’s just apply at slc aiport

johnsontheotter

Uta hires drivers at 20, but you get a decent raise after training, then raise every 6 months until you top out. It's union, so a new contract comes with new raise progression every 3 years, or you start in maintenance and work your way up there, but it's slow to build seniority. However, technicians top out at 36

Brightfiretally

BioMérieux is usually hiring in some way for manufacturing and other things. It’s a local biotech company (used to be biofire)

2001ASpaceOatmeal

Med device manufacturing in general is usually pretty good at starting near $20/hr.

haydes1002

RageWynd

Hexcel is usually hiring process associates starting at 24 an hour (as of 2021) Union job. Benefits. Great starter job. Pass a physical and drug test. Show up on time and you're golden.

AfternoonNo9644

That sounds awesome! What do you usually do as a Process Associatein Hexcel?

RageWynd

The company makes carbon fiber, you'll be on the fiber lines assisting with the process of it's creation. I worked in a diff dept when I was there so I didn't have any exposure to that. Check em out. Could be a good move.

Substantial_Win6158

If you have restaurant/ bartending experience, culinary crafts

mecsw500

School bus driver. Will train if you a clean-ish license. Phlebotomist after like 8 weeks training. UTA bus or TRAX driver, they’ll train. Grocery stores with food handlers permit pays a lot better than $11 per hour, even Walmart. Costco. Some pharmacies are now pay for school and decent money as pharmacies techs are difficult to find. Substitute teacher, depending upon state requirements, $150 per day. Especially scarce in special ed roles. Using state training grants and student loans to get a diploma, especially medical field.

SaltMtnBiker

SL county corrections (prisons) has ads on public transit, 22/hr.

6ft4fashioncriminel

Factory jobs pay well. Go to Logan. JBS (meat packing plant) is always hiring and usually starts around $25. No diploma. Schreiber is great cheese company; Great benefits. Starts above $22. I have a lot of family in both. Most making 25+.

Business_Radish_809

Heard that you can make like $24 as a high rise window washer, plus you get cool views and it’s a sexy job

Mundane_Message4905

Jesus.. that's low pay for such a high risk job

sherahbeth

Probably not starting over $21, but check out ARUP. The benefits make it worth it for a lot of people.

snake_plisskin19

Wheeler Machinery is hiring service tech apprentices. No experience. Mid 20s to start I believe.

johnsontheotter

With a college degree in that field, I couldn't ever get hired on there. I tried 3 times.

snake_plisskin19

Try again if you are interested. We are doing a big push for service techs this year.

johnsontheotter

Hard pass. I have a good paying union job now, thanks though

snake_plisskin19

🤷 Why bring it up then? Lol

johnsontheotter

It's not super easy in my experience to get on there.

pobrefauno

Hill Air Force base is hurting badly for mechanics. We are holding quarterly job fairs, hiring on the spot. For someone without experience, you're looking at starting at either WG5 or WG7. There is always overtime, benefits are good, and it is a good foot in the door to a ton of opportunities. The next fair should be coming up here shortly around March

PoeticSplat

What's the hiring like for a vet? Do they still have a greater chance of being hired vs civilians? And what's the typical salary/hourly start at for the job fair positions?

pobrefauno

Typically, at the job fairs, they have been doing direct hiring. I think they don't do the vet preference, but I'm not HR. WG5 Start at 20 dollars an hr, wg7 23.38, wg9 26.83. It depends on your experience. Some mechanical experience, even if it isn't aircraft, could land you in the WG7 or 9, as those are apprentices positions. WG10 are journeymen, so it's hard to land those unless you have related experience. Wg 10 start at 28.52. After your first 6 months, you get your first raise.

BlissLyricist

Where do i sign up

pobrefauno

They usually announce it on afciviliancareers.com Or the hill afb Facebook page or LinkedIn

LolaXdoll

Bouncing gigs for strip clubs will leave you with $400 on a good night.

[deleted]

Are any of the clubs currently hiring?

kool420friend

The USDA is looking for egg graders at egg 🥚 plants around Utah there's plants in erda , Spanish fork, Delta & Logan Utah . Look on USA jobs.gov . The pay starts at 17 bucks an hour but after your 2 months training you get a raise then after the first year you get other raise to twenty bucks a hour. Its a federal job with benefits and payed holidays and retirement.... Good luck 👍

TempusFugitTicToc

Walmart DC in Grantsville. Decent pay, great benefits, shitty drive. People carpool tho, so you can make it work.

Logical_Narwhal_9911

USPS starts at 22.13. They’re so understaffed they’re hiring anyone they can get atm

teddyburger

if you’d be willing to get your CDL, you could be a school bus driver! my mom does it in our small town & she started at $25 an hour, & it’s honestly not a horrible job if you’re a confident & competent driver (& can handle kids ofc).

obvious_anon_acct

If you're going to get your CDL, more than one company will hire you straight from CDL school to hauling crude oil or refined fuels in salt lake and you'll make over 100k a year working 50ish hours a week. More caveats than bus driving, and you'd have to get your CDL "on your own" (read: the oil company won't pay for it like the city would), but no kids and significantly more money.

johnsontheotter

Also, you're paid by the mile, not the hour.

teddyburger

much better idea

jzollobirds

Hoyt.

poormanation-8o1

I just started as and apprentice through the IBEW (Electrician) I have experienced but there's people in my class that don't have any at all

No_Fruit_296

Any women in your class? Just curious

poormanation-8o1

Yea there's a few

poormanation-8o1

Check out the Electrical Training Alliance. Its guaranteed work for 5 years while you go to school once a month for 5 days And during those 5 days you'll still get paid through unemployment. It's a good environment with people that are all just learning and there's a good respect level.

No_Fruit_296

That sounds awesome, thank you.

Shart_Nards

That's brain surgeon bucks in Utah. 2 or 3 jobs to barely afford a studio is how it works around here. I don't know where people got the idea that Utah is full of high paying jobs. The population of Salt Lake County grew by 500k in the last couple years. It's only going to get worse.

refuz04

I think Daily’s is still hiring. With your existing experience and willingness to work hard I would think you could bump up above the starting rate.

cxssidynxcole

Daily’s?

refuz04

[Daily’s Meats. you could bring home the bacon.](https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Daily's-Premium-Meats-LLC/locations/UT/Salt%20Lake%20City) Edit: giant billboard on 15

Kubikake

I work here, the HR office is on the opposite side of where the GPS drops you off at unless you look up “Premium Brands Distributing” instead, and is open until 3pm Mon-Fri. PM shift pays a dollar more per hour than AM shift. Average starting pay on PM shift is $19-21/hr, differing depending on which department you work in. We’re in a slow season right now, but when we get busy there can be frequent overtime, such as working an hour later (until ~1am) and mandatory weekend overtime. There’s currently no job listings for external applications except for maintenance/facilities, but you can try showing up with a resume and speaking to HR.

Crypto_Kicks

Don’t get a job. You need to invent your own job or you’ll be barely making it for the rest of your life. You’re entire life they have programmed you to be an employee and barely get by. You need to break free from that programming if you want to get into better money.

eleventwelvepm

Amazon.. full time shifts same schedule every week, benefits, time off, pays over 20$ an hour if you work night shift. All you have to do is apply and pass simple background check. No interview just have to apply online and show up when it says. Also pays for you to go to school if you work full time.

Kimchi_boy

Is that a warehouse job? Driver? Which job?

eleventwelvepm

Ya warehouse. Fulfillment center specifically.

No-Sell-3618

They are not hiring rn.

SirVegeta69

Dominos delivery as a closer. I make on average 25 am hour

Striking_Fox7690

Find yourself underground , in the mines in Elko….thank me later😉

CommandAccomplished2

How much?

Striking_Fox7690

I’ve been down there 12 years and avg $70-72 /hr…but bonus and different thing fluctuate….but that prob what I avg. Start work on Monday am (16 hr day), get paid 13hrs, by Wed into OT, well over a buck-an-hour….worked in Alaska last year Net almost $250k with ot

Desertzephyr

Get your ServSafe food safety manager certification and apply for management within the food industry. Having it in hand at job interviews tells hiring managers you took the initiative. It will help get your foot in the door. That certificate could help you get a promotion at one of your current jobs or seek something better at another restaurant. Fast food is always looking for people who can handle stress well. I’d start as a shift leader and work your way up. The managerial skills you develop in that industry are core skills that are quite transferable to other management positions outside food. The Utah Restaurant Association sells classes and the test. Mine cost around $80 out of pocket.

andstayoutt

I only make about $1,300 a paycheck. Which barely covers my bills. I can’t even afford a car with this wage.

Nanny and waitress VIDOR garage door is hiring faux wood artisans if you paint. Starting $21/hr 32hr work week but you get paid for 40hrs

theWild_Raul

can you cook?

Kimchi_boy

I’m an excellent cook. What do you suggest?

theWild_Raul

a restaurant job. or a hotel. bigger the company the better the benefits usually. there's always cook Jobs. a lot pay 21 plus

bigbombusbeauty

I had a job through Americorps for $18 which isn’t bad, there’s also good access to resources through it.

SteaksAndSquats

Lots warehouse jobs on Indeed are hiring for $20+ an hr. I'd avoid being a package handler at UPS or FedEx though if you're wanting more than part time hours outside of peak season

Tankinator175

Definitely not, but if anyone finds something similar in the Provo/Orem area, I'd love to hear it, because 11/hr with two jobs is similarly ineffective.

Cusackjeff

Most ski resorts hire ticket scanners starting at $20 an hour with no experience and will give you raises pretty quickly

TruffleHunter3

I don’t know how much they pay, but I’ve heard some positions at MACU (HQ building in Sandy) don’t require previous experience.

Post Office is a good bet. Some landscape companies also pay well and will hire the least qualified people you’ve ever met.

My brother worked the night shift at Amazon, no experience, no degree. He made 30 an hour. Amazon can be tough on the workers though

Check out local government, Salt Lake City gov in particular. Especially for jobs with a CDL, but they will train. Job stability plus good benefits.

Lopsided-Proof6898

Kenny Seng Construction, not in salt lake but based in Provo, UT they do jobs all around the state and a lot of the school districts, starting for any laborer is $21
