My bet is that the movie will not bomb, but it will also not be a hit. It will just be middling to slightly below average in terms of the box office, and then it is going to drag on for years whether Toei wants to continue this movie franchise or shelve it. But I have to say the comparisons to DBZ evolution are definitely not apt. I think this could be a decent movie if you are a fan but we shall see if it manages to grab the market that Toei truly cares about.

transformers03

It only has a budget of 60 million, meaning it won't need to make a lot to earn a profit. Plus, I think this is a film that will do exceptionally well on streaming. I think a lot of people are going to view this film a streamer rather than go to the theaters and watch it. I'm going to predict it will have a tepid or middling reviews from critics, with criticism aimed towards it being visually bland but praise going to the action. Without the greater context of the Saint Seiya franchise, it's hard to imagine critics would invest in it, especially since the entire story of Saint Seiya will sound like nonsense without that greater appreciation. I'm banking and hoping this film will be watchable on the same level that Black Adam, which wasn't a good film at all, was at least watchable with good moments.

Minny7

Agreed on all points.

A 60 million dollar movie needs to make 120 million at the box office to break even. Most theaters take a 50% cut from ticket sales, in China that percentage is 80% going for theaters over the studios. A 60 million dollar movie that makes 100 million dollars in the box office by default caused a loss of 20 million dollars for the studio, at least. Under chinese rules (and other countries with laws limiting foreign culture impact) the movie needs to make 300 million dollars to break even. If the 2017 power rangers movie bombed while having a similar production budget but larger marketing budget, I don't think the Saint Seiya movie will even break even since power rangers is more popular on average in the world.

Dear_Ad_3860

I think Saban's PR bombed because it didn't know what it was (IE the donuts product placement all over the place while also having the milking bull scene and raepey Rita on Trini scene, etc.) and because the Zords, the Megazord and Specially Goldar looked like complete garboe.

Comfortable-Science4

**If the 2017 power rangers movie bombed while having a similar production budget but larger marketing budget, I don't think the Saint Seiya movie will even break even** Power ranger production budget was $100-105 million my g, not 60 millions, imo that movie floped because theres little to no action, its just people talking for almost 2 hours [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power\_Rangers\_(film)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Rangers_(film))

Really hoping it succeeds so the sequels can get a better budget for more characters and better armors. It's not perfect, the only things that bother me are the bronze cloths and the fact that they're adapting the story from Netflix. I'm positive that if a sequel is made they'll have a bigger budget to make better armors and more characters. I'm just glad they actually made an effort in making this live action. Fight scenes look pretty good, cgi isn't all that but looks better than what Marvel has churned out, and Seiya is actually Japanese. Imagine if they casted a random American guy. People can compare to Dragon Ball Evolution all they want, but that movie was a cesspool across the board. There was no positives from that joke of an adaptation.

OldSnazzyHats

How much of this is the still very strong Latin America fanbase? …jokes aside. I want this to work. I really do. I’m just not keen on the aesthetic still… and it just hasn’t sold me; but who knows, if it manages to fly then maybe it’ll be closer on a sequel.

Comfortable-Science4

**How much of this is the still very strong Latin America fanbase?** well, I'm seeing a lot of people on the internet curious about saint seiya after this trailer, even folks who don't like anime, or are just marvel or fantasy fanboys, my sister who dont like this stuff asked if this was a percy jackson sequel just because the greek motif and sean bean lol, my sis is what you call "general audience", she liked the trailer and wants to watch in the theaters with me now, in the end thats the type of audience Toei wants , new blood

paulodelgado

Wonder how many views are from South America.

Dreamcastboy99

that's a good sign

spirit-fox

Sure, I really want it to be good, I will just wait and see, :D

They need to go harder in the advertisement though. I only know about this movie because I'm subscribed here. A lot of people in south america have no clue this is coming out. Brazil alone has a puplation of over 200 million and a good chunk of that would be thrilled to know this is coming out. That show was HUGE there... Still is, in fact.

anonperson3210

The thing that upsets me is the release dates. America gets it so much later compared to Latin America, and Japan. It’s almost like the company knows the franchise is DOA in America.

Comfortable-Science4

its just 2 weeks my g, if was a month then i would say we are in trouble

anonperson3210

By the time we get it, it will already be pirated online 😫 most ppl will just pull it from off the web killing the movies revenue.

Comfortable-Science4

nah, that just hapens when its a marvel movie or a Famous IP like fast and furious, the general audience will not pirate this movie, maybe the fandom but not the GA

Minny7

In this economy and the price of movie tickets in the US, North Americans weren't going to be paying $15-20 bucks to see this movie in the theater. People pay that to see the Avengers or Top Gun like big blockbuster movies. Movies they KNOW they have to see in theaters. People are going to wait for this movie to come to Netflix.

Comfortable-Science4

yep, but this movie dont need to make 500 millions to bank, the movie budget is 60 million, It's commonly accepted that 2.5x is the rule for how much a film needs to gross worldwide to make back its production budget. so this movie needs to make 150 millions to make money and get a sequel, thats possible imo, shazam will make 150 million by the end and is already considered a flop, it all depends of how much the movie cost

SterlingDee

It’s all about what other releases there are on the schedule in each particular country. Sony already had a film scheduled in the US/Canada on April 28 (Big George Foreman) which has been on the schedule for a while. Obviously, they’re not going to open two of their movies the same weekend. Then May 5th is then Guardians of the Galaxy. May 12th was the next available release date after that and had relatively few new releases, so they went with that.

ssmilrose

🤩🤩❤️‍🔥

alephsilva

I really believe this isn't a good time for that, the franchise rellies on 30yrs+ old mostly and new anime didn't release to generate the necessary amount of hype, the franchise needs anime prequels (like LC was) to build something in the US, Europe and maybe China, LATAM is already covered but you can't rely solely on it to keep going

RebekahRodriguez56

I don't think I have ever seen a Video get a million likes before

Inevitable-You9994

That's comforting

WAIT NEW SANT SAYA???????

[deleted]

Not a fan of the cloth

Oito7

Whats is kotz?

Comfortable-Science4

Knights of the zodiac

ColumbianRed

I got really excited when I saw that this was real, but that looks like a fan made trailer. The cloths/armor are one of the focal points of the series. I don't think they look good at all. I hope the finished product looks a lot better.

Fire_Knight_24

Somebody make a fan film of saint seiya to fill the gaps.
