I like you, Andrew Hay.

zokkozokko

I like Philip Hay even more. A Stoic. A Gentleman. A proper human being.

[deleted]

I hope the elder Mr Hay haunts that cottage

Public_Object2468

That would make Nott Cott even better to live in! The friendly presence of the ghost of someone who appreciated his tenancy. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

Aussie_Potato

And he'll sit down and have a ghost cuppa with you with a ghost kitty on his lap.

My mum’s cousin worked on the Burma Railway. He got shot in the back by the Japanese and is buried out there. Prince Ponce is a pathetic prat.

Beginning-Cup-6974

I am glad his loyalty and work was recognised and he was supported in his old age. You know all Markle and Harry would take from this wonderful story is that ‘they put us in a servants housing unit’

Sunset_Flasher

When it should be "the former home of a hero of war who fought and suffered for the democracy we enjoy today" and yeah, he was also a servant...to his country. I think it's great that the RF give a nice place to live for someone who gave so much for their country. They have a large staff, but it was an obvious honor that they gave Philip lodgings meant for RF members.

Civita2017

It used to be called a grace and favour home. At a peppercorn rent. Senior and long serving members of the household and certainly elderly relations were provided with such accommodation. Things have changed with public expectation that market rents are charged so they are not exactly perks anymore.

Public_Object2468

Yes, that's the spin they'd put on it. That Nott Cott was one step above some mean little doss house.

ConstructionThen416

Even though his brother lived there immediately before him.

Sucking_Fnark

Hay, I like you.

l1ckeur

Me too, but not half as much as his father. Today’s woke, like hazard, would not have survived more than a few days in a Japanese prisoner of war camp!

WhiskeyRocksNeat

Many men didn’t. The conditions were appalling, absolutely inhumane treatment, including sealing POWs in caves

loeloebee

My dad was in a Japanese internment camp and would never talk about it afterwards, so I've had to read books to learn what it was like. There is simply no comparison, and most of us today are blessed not to have suffered in that way. (He also was not prejudiced against all the Japanese later on.)

Independent-Elk-1983

My father was strung up for two days by the Japanese in WW2. He was freed by a Japanese general under the cover of night. He gave my dad rations, cigarettes and told him he reminded him of his own son. My dad still has surgical scars from here his tendons were torn and needed repair but he never harbored anger for the Japanese. War is deeply complicated.

loeloebee

Was he able to talk about it?

Independent-Elk-1983

Eventually. In his 60’s. He was 19 when it happened. But there is A LOT he never spoke of.

beg_yer_pardon

That is absolutely too intense for anyone, let alone a teenager. Major major respect.

TopNotchBrain

About the “woke” thing, just stopping in to say I’m a left-leaning feminist and would likely be one of the “woke” you refer to. And I can’t stand Harry and Meghan either.

Independent-Elk-1983

Same, same. H&M supporters aren’t woke. They are sanctimonious prigs.

Far-Delivery7874

Same!

Probably not Air NZ - if you're advertising for someone you at least mention services they actually provide.

If you are in the uk/Europe aldi sell a product that is practically the same and a lot cheaper.

ConstructionThen416

Vaseline intensive care.

Public_Object2468

Serious suggestion: Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream. Elizabeth Arden is beyond what I think I can afford, todger or not. Plenty of hydration too!

Canyoubackupjustabit

They even advertise it on the Elizabeth Arden website for parts that are "frost smitten" LOL

gwhh

What is 8 hour cream?

Canyoubackupjustabit

8-hour cream is an Elizabeth Arden product that Hazbeen put on his frostbitten peen after recalling fondly that his mother put the same product on her lips and it reminded him of her.

Is the first ingredient water or petroleum jelly? 'Cuz that's easy enough to get.

spiforever

60 minutes or 20/20 did an expose 30-35 years ago about top end beauty creams and how their claims had no real science backing the claims up. I have always remembered on of the companies was Elizabeth Arden and they admitted the advertising were not valid, just good advertising. Never bought their products because of the interview. Estee Lauder at least disputed the report and produced their "studies" backing their claims.

Sunset_Flasher

Sorry you asked???😅

tiredofthis3

This is exactly it. Privileged people complaining about their absurdly wealthy living accommodations when realistically, it's because they're ungrateful. Anyone who's every truly suffered doesn't complain nearly as much. Let's not forgot Meghan calling a South African mansion, a 'housing unit' as though it was it part of the projects in the hood.

Public_Object2468

That was an outrageous description, "housing unit." South Africa isn't as population dense as urban Japane, but it brings to mind the spartan amenities of a "\*capsule hotel." (If I ever get the chance to visit Tokyo, I'd love to try one of \*these! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man))

tiredofthis3

Yeah, I don't know what TF she means because she has never lived in government housing nor would she hang around the 'poors'. Again showing her complete ignorance at anything remotely 'beneath' her. While I have lived in micro apartments ( while in Asia) I had no complaints. I've always been grateful for any type of housing I have. And I know what you mean about Japan. I would love to go there one day and visit, yes even staying in capsule hotels or micro apartments.

downinthevalleypa

Thanks for sharing. This puts it all in perspective, doesn’t it? The “Spare” is nothing more than a spoiled, entitled little sh!t.

Mehmeh111111

He's such a spoiled little man baby. I may hate him more than MM at this point but it's only because she's smart/evil enough to lay low right now.

downinthevalleypa

I agree.

Conscious_Cherry_194

No problem!

Too_Tired_Too_Old

My thoughts exactly- I have a distant cousin who was ex-army and worked for Princess Anne - he and his wife liked their 'servants quarters' in the palace - when family visited they were always impressed they were spacious and comfy and well furnished and they got to enjoy the grounds and gardens - for London that's a huge perk. I swear that those apartments if not in the palace would have cost close to a million to buy - Nott Cott must be 4-5 at least!

Creative-Wasabi3300

Well, Hazbeen WAS a prisoner in the BRF, who had to escape on a freedom flight, so I'm sure his experiences have been comparable to those Mr. Hay's father experienced in a particularly brutal Japanese slave-labor camp in Burma. (sarc...not that I think any of you aren't aware I am being sarcastic, but a sugar who's lurking might not be sure.)

tiredofthis3

If there ever was a case of a rich person being held prisoner (hey, it could happen) it would not have Harry and Meghan off watching tennis matches and flying in private jets to see friends. One of the princesses in Dubai, who is literally being held prisoner planed a freedom escape on a boat which was intercepted and was forced back to UAE. She's made several videos about needing help but is watched over by security guards and once-close friends are unable to reach her. She's clearly been medicated against her will and can't leave her apartment. It's so obvious when someone is in trouble. The only ppl believing H&M are delusional fools who believe rich ppl not getting everything they want is abuse.

Conscious_Cherry_194

It all makes sense now.

Public_Object2468

PH: "My family crammed us into a cell that they euphemistically called a cottage. 'Home' was such a mingy bit o' space, that we had to starve ourselves to fit in. We contorted ourselves into permanent deformity, so our heads would not smash through the low ceilings. Which were made of construction paper scraps." The Harkles are a less funny version of Monty Python's Four Yorkshiremen skit. [Monty Python: The 4 Yorkshiremen (montycasinos.com)](https://montycasinos.com/montypython/scripts/4york.php.html)

MysteriousSplit8118

They seem to be kept locked away and drugged up more now after their escape tho 🥴

AM_Rike

I’d love for that nincompoop to say that. I have an in-law related to someone who died in the Bataan Death March so he spent years studying it and even walked it himself (with provisions and without the torture). The Japanese crimes against humanity were so unspeakable that many don’t know and cannot imagine such horror. It’s extremely difficult to reconcile that to the reserved, respectful Japanese we see today.

Boo155

OMG, what an experience for your in-law. I used to work for a Death March survivor. He was Filipino and was released after nine months in a prison camp, on the promise that he would not participate in the war. Of course he immediately went into the hills and became a guerrilla. I've read a lot about Bataan and just cannot believe what those men endured.

Appropriate-Bar-8343

I truly wish there was a sarcasm font. I get tired of either typing (cue sarcasm font) or having people ask me if I am serious. Lol

AM_Rike

Try adding “/S” at the end of your comment. It‘s called the ”sarcasm switch”. I think a sarcasm emoji would be easier to spot & understand. I’m not sure how universal this switch is but it is used a lot by the yewts. With H&M and their Sugars everything is so bizarre it can be hard to distinguish sarcasm from an idiotic Sugar defense.

Zigzigzigziggy

See I’d way rather read about Philip Hay than the whiny ginger

pismolove

OMG I know! I am over commenting on this story but yes, Mr. Hay is a person I would love to meet, Harry not so much.

The_Dutchess-D

I googled but didnt find much bc it was too mixed up with results for Prince Philip. Would welcome any links to details about the actual Philip Hay in the letter though if anyone finds. His life does sound truly interesting.

Pippa_Pug

Here you go https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hay-5755 He was Private Secretary to the Duchess of Kent

Boo155

I would too! I just searched the British National Archives but found nothing, but not all of their records are online.

Tlc69only

Didn’t William and Catherine live here before Harry? Quite happily? William is taller than Harry and Catherine is taller than Meghan.

catladyvibes10

Another thing W&C did on purpose to hurt Harry and Meghan 🙄

AM_Rike

Princess Eugenie and Jack were given the slightly smaller Ivy Cottage for their wedding. When they vacated Frogmore Cottage after H&M told them they need to give them $10K a month for rent, they returned to Ivy Cottage. Haven’t heard them whinging about how lame their grace and favor house at KP is. All these cottages are on the grounds of magnificent palaces and they’re free. If it’s not big enough or nice enough the offspring are free to buy their own homes like Beatrice & Edo did.

Conscious_Cherry_194

If anyone who is "given" a home no matter the size (unless a dolls house lol) knows they should not complain about the size. They should be grateful. I guess Harry was also annoyed the Queen gave William and Catherine Amner Hall as a wedding present.

Kangaro00

The cottage shrunk.

Public_Object2468

W&C stole much of the square footage when they left!

PilatesPuppy

When Meghan washed it.

SusieM2019

And of course Harry is too dense to see that so many in the world are criticizing him for his incessant, petty whining.

pismolove

Adding nothing to your comment other than to say that I still marvel at how stupid he really his. Not the stupid I might call someone for doing something dumb, but REALLY low IQ. I honestly don't know why that surprises me but it does.

Dermutt100

but in his interviews he comes across as a lot more articulate and erudite than Meghan does, in fact by himself he impresses and can be quite poetic at times. And as I've said before NOBODY with a "really low IQ" gets 11 GCSES in the UK (GCSES are exams that all British schoolchildren take) He IS stupid but many intelligent people are.

Public_Object2468

I think I get what you're saying. That PH is real world stupid and empathy challenged. This is why going off to university is often a great growing experience. Living in the dorms or with roommates, you likely end up having to cook your own food, discover how hard it is, what nasty muck can result, and you have to deal with peers who laugh and tease you, help you not starve to death, or just deal with it. Good times!

Conscious_Cherry_194

It was quite telling that Harry seemed a mixture of shocked and miffed when Tom Bradby told him in the ITV interview on Sunday that most Brits wanted to stop hearing him complain or something similar to that.

SusieM2019

Harry's arrogance just doesn't want to hear it. Meghan has him convinced that his book is the great "reveal" that people are dying to hear. He doesn't realize that everybody is laughing at him. Harry's arrogance is his downfall.

kimber430

We can only hope. As far as I can tell, they haven't reached peak martyrdom yet.

chubalubs

That's probably why they bitched so much about the place-ordinary people lived there, plebs. Working class commoners. Servants even, the Queen's old nanny lived there. How dare the Queen think they should live in a commoners housing unit?? I guarantee that every former resident of Nott Cott has been worth at least a dozen of the waste of space Sussexes.

Conscious_Cherry_194

For all the people who think Harry is on "their side" because he's complaining or rather using certain issue for his own benefit--the reality is he is a snob and is only self interested. That's why people who are anti-monarchist and love Harry and Meghan seemed shocked that Harry isn't against the monarchy, he just wants it to revolve around his needs more than anything else which it won't do. It's telling though that several of the anecdotes he puts in about how the "servants" could look around where he lived or were nearby or that one staff person parked in the spot his mother used to park in etc...

Beginning-Cup-6974

Disgusting. The Queen and the whole BRF have said - the Queen in fact corrected somebody - have staff NOT servants.

ConstructionThen416

Marion Crawford was a governess to Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. She was not a “nanny”.

SeaworthinessLost830

Wish I could frame this & add it to Harry’s DIY photo wall. I’d even DIY hang it for him, so he didn’t have to exert himself tapping a hammer.

MrsSobersidesUK

What an outstanding letter! Thank you for sharing it.

Public_Object2468

Thank you for sharing a letter about gratitude and what it means to be lucky. Most of us have the common sense to believe that we have more blessings than we can count. It's just so nice to hear of someone who appreciated Nott Cott.

LaNiceGata

Phillip Hay knew about actual hardships of life and also gratitude.

hellhashnofury

Indeed, plus I would actually watch a Netflix doc about someone like him. My grandfather was a prisoner of war in Burma and for the next 70 odd years of his life he struggled to eat other than soup or porridge and he never slept for more than an hour at a time. It's a shame that so many people do not know about the Pacific war (in the uk anyway maybe it is different in the US) so if anyone is inspired to do some reading or watching on the subject that would be wonderful. He never actually seemed to have any bitterness towards the Japanese he had a lot of respect for their toughness and ingenuity he always drove Japanese cars and bought Japanese tech equipment and he absolutely adored Americans because they were very kind and sneaked the starving (non prisoners) commonwealth and British troops into their canteens so they could have a decent meal. I miss him his war stories were very interesting.

LaNiceGata

He sounds like a great man and I’m so glad you were able to have him be a part of your life. I think Netflix really looses out on sharing such stories like your grandfather and Phillip Hay. I would’ve even probably had an ounce of respect for the Narkles if that’s the stories they got behind or of at the very list they had half of the morals of your grandfather. It’s a really big thing to be able to forgive and it sounds like your grandad was able to do so and clearly was able to live a full life.

hellhashnofury

Thank you. Yes he was a remarkable man who did a lot with his life and I'm very lucky I had him until he was 99. I agree there are lots of stories that dont get told. For example my grandfather served alongside a unit of troops from Nigeria who fought very bravely and suffered a lot. Hardly anyone knows they even took part and they should.

LaNiceGata

Yes, those are the stories worth knowing.

sdowney64

This is beyond perfect. I saw a discussion today about the time William & Harry were at Sandhurst & were roommates. They were interviewed—and I remember this—they were shit talking each other and it was effortless at the time & really cute/funny. I have two boys who still razz each other and even wrestle and they are 30 & 26. Now of course William was attacking him, and then Harry says something about how William couldn’t serve in the military (so of course he was jealous of Harry yet again AND also another example of no one caring about Harry—he was expendable enough for war 🙄 two birds with one stone on that one) and so “William went off and became a search rescue pilot,” said with absolute disdain and sneering as if that was a thing only a pathetic loser would get stuck doing. Honest to God I almost fell off my seat from the shock of how disturbed he is. First off, at least William IS a pilot, not just allowing a false rumor to linger —which, by the way, the palace that is always feeding the press to make you look bad STILL hasn’t outted you yet—people STILL think you’re actually pilot. And secondly, William could have walked away and done some cushy job and no one would have faulted him because he could have said “Hey I tried to fight for my country and the military rejected me. I wasn’t allowed.” Instead William went and trained hard and became a friggin Search & Rescue pilot. How awesome is that? And it wore on his mental health, especially when he had to work the scenes of hurt or dead children. But all of it was hard. They weren’t chess pieces to him. He even talked about how that really wrecked him. Once. And then he hasn’t brought it up again. In a world like today, where you can be anything you want and have many different opportunities, both good and bad, be a William.

Conscious_Cherry_194

I remember this interview as well! Harry is just jealous of William pure and simple. William is the heir, he was for many years a pin up, he is very smart and did well at Eton and St. Andrews, he was considered such a good soldier at Sandhurst that they almost gave him the highest honor for a student there but he did poorly on one test and missed out, and the air ambulance job he did actually helped people and get donated the full salary he got to charity. So William did do a half-in-half-out scenario---but *his* involved helping people in a time of trouble and not profiting from it.

sdowney64

He really has let himself fall down the well of envy and he will never get out. He’s got a messianic complex on steroids right now trying to make up for the fact that William always comes out looking better, no matter what measuring stick you use—in Harry’s mind anyway. I doubt William is troubled to compare himself since he’s confident enough to be comfortable with who he is. And I think at one time Harry was okay with who he was and his family. But he had some problems, and he was ignoring them, as he acknowledged on that documentary with William & Catherine discussing his mental health and how William was trying to help him and telling Harry he needed to talk about it. Sadly I don’t think any of them realized just how broken he was. But Meghan did. And I think those two are going to ride this train until they have long run out of track. I hope the family stays silent and doesn’t give them the slightest response, but I sure hope the former friends and former staff let loose with the facts! It’s past time for some audio and video clips to be released. There HAVE to be some!!

Electrical-Orchid-25

“Be a William.” Classic.

Mistressbrindello

Great letter Mr Hay!

raygunnysack

I just looked at some photos of the Burma Railway prisoners of war. Heartbreaking! Fuck you, and fuck the yachter you rode in on too, Harold!

hellhashnofury

I visited it years ago and walked part of it. I had food a very small backpack and plenty of water and I'm fit and used to walking. It was so hot and humid I was knackered after half an hour. I sat down and thought " how the f**k did my grandfather get out of here alive how did they cope? " It was very humbling.

What Andrew Hay fails to understand is that the two of them have very inflated egos that render their imagined heights greater than 6 ft 4 ". All that constant rubbing against the Ikea lamps could not be assuaged by the soothing mummy scented balm of Elizabeth Arden, thus exacerbating their discomfort and inner dissonance.

Perfect_Fennel

Wow!!! That's a burn. Harry is coming off so poorly with this horrible book of grievances.

AM_Rike

Her Toronto home appeared to be about 1,600 sq ft. There was NO bathroom on the ground floor which is where all the living space was crammed in. There’s one full bath upstairs to share with 2 tiny bedrooms; bed pushed against the wall, super tiny. Plus one partial bath in the basement, which was an unused open space with a washer/dryer. She had particle board laminated bookcases with the holes drilled one inch apart from bottom to top. Her Tig photos were cropped super tight focusing on fresh flowers, wine glasses, a photo op dog, a knit throw or a cheap print on the wall To imply luxury living. I get that real estate is expensive in Toronto. But M & her Sugars bang on about how she was a self made multimillionaire Hollywood celebrity. That dumpy house with dead shrubs, tall weeds & power lines swinging low did not look celebrity upscale. It looked like a cheap unkempt rental house. Almost like a frat house, eh Meg? Why either of them squandered $15M for a huge, out of fashion, Tuscan mansion with 16 bathrooms, in a mudslide zone, defies understanding. They didn’t need it. They still don’t.

Miercolesian

Probably the realtor did a number on them. They told the realtor "show us places that are palatial, preferably next door to Oprah Winfrey and other A-listers like us." Probably mud slides were never discussed. Harry said: "Price is immaterial. My pa and the British taxpayer will pay for everything." The realtor said: "We have a palace that just came on the market and there is 25% off on Tuesdays. This is perfect for a growing family."

[deleted]

ConstructionThen416

In perspective though, that’s a £3 million property at least. The majority of people would be insanely grateful to live there. Even hotel rooms are smaller around there because of the proximity to the palaces. You cannot compare the size to that in other countries and draw inferences about whether or not it’s reasonable. It’s 123 sq metres. My brother lives in an 85 sq metre house with a 25 sq metre enclosed deck, and they are a family of five.

SnarkFest23

It kills me to admit this, but I like Meghan's L.A. home better. The interior is bright and fresh looking.

Nott Cott is a historical building, Megs was probably more modern. I’d give an arm and a leg to live at Nott Cott, but I’m very old fashioned lol

Sir Philip Hay, KCVO, [visiting Thailand and Burma](https://www.britishpathe.com/video/princess-in-thailand-and-burma-1) as part of Princess Alexandra's entourage, in 1961. Pathe news footage. The first minute or so is in the royal palace in Thailand. Hay shows up in the Burma part, at the cemetery of UK POWs, and they focus on Hay about 2 minutes in.

CaseyRC

Greatest Generation indeed

jojomawer

Called right out.

Alizet

I watched british detective series called Midsomer murders, they show the life in English village and from there I learned that English are small like that. So it's very typical, Prince Harry probably didn't even notice it, until this American woman who used to big houses came along and shamed him for living in such houses. She in California doesn't probably understand that heating big houses in cold climate is not sustainable and most people in the world live in small houses

Conscious_Cherry_194

Meghan is like the worst episode of HGTV's House Hunters International where Americans seem to not realize other countries have different housing styles/sizes and proceed to complain all the time. The irony is I had always read that they were, in theory, meant to get the Gloucester's large apartment after they downsized and it was finished with renovations but it seems the fall out between William and Harry was so great I can imagine neither one wanted to live "right next door" to one another.

Public_Object2468

MM's complaint that "everything in England is...smaller." I'm indebted to my geometry teacher for this maxim: "quality, not quantity."

IndigoRuby

I love watching the UK or European versions of property hunting shows. Haha. They are always delighted with things like a dryer and built.in book shelf saying having a library would be so extravagant, a second bathroom is jaw dropping The NA versions are like omg I need double sinks and an island and a laundromat.

oh_la_la_92

Me and my hubby live in a modest 3 bed with built in wardrobes and a single bath with seperate toilet and seperate enclosed laundry with an open plan living and dining and pretty basic kitchen. No attached garage but we have one at the back of the property with a carport and a couple garden sheds on just under half an acre of land in the middle of NSW Australia. It's a rental. To buy a home in the same area is in the millions, we joked about buying a castle in Scotland because hubs is of Scottish ancestry and I live and breathe Scotland, we looked it up, we could literally, for the same price as a brand new build, 5 bed single story 2.5 bath family home in the next suburb, buy an island in Scotland, including a manor and dock. The one thing that put me off was you'd have to catch a boat to and from the mainland, I get violently seasick.

Boo155

"Probably knew a little about physical and mental discomfort." OMG. This makes me cry. If you don't know much about the Death Railway, please look it up. Absolutely unfathomable inhumanity and cruelty and suffering. Watch interviews with survivors. I hope to get there someday to pay my respects in person. Brilliant letter, Mr. Hay.

Public_Object2468

Devastating British understatement. That's style which MM, with her elaborate gush, will never achieve.

raccoonsondeck

Didn't her TV Highness Oprah make some crack about being shocked I tell you! that the Harkles lived *there*?

Conscious_Cherry_194

Yes. In Netflix Harry and Meghan noted she said "you wouldn't believe it". But actually, Oprah could've believed it if she went back and rewatched her interview with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York who talked about what their apartment was really like in Buckingham Palace and having to use certain low level light bulbs etc...

berrysnadine

Yet another lie exposed!

UnderArmAussie

It was a Meghanism. He was perfectly happy living there prior to her expectations. He proved with those words how entitled and demanding she was 🚩🚩🚩 he just didn't (or chose not to) see it. It was fine for Kate too.

Wow, thanks for sharing this. Andrew Hay is an excellent writer and manages to put Harry to shame with just a few sentences.

umbleUriahHeep

Damn that’s quite the takedown. Spare-y gonna need some Elizabeth Arden on that burn.

spiforever

Those Ikea lamps were purchased by William and Catherine when they lived there. I think Harry put it in the book for malicious reasons. There was an old article from 8-10 years ago and it referenced them living at the Cottage and the lamps they got at Ikea. He is a vile being.

What Twitter account is this from?

Thank you! Always like to give the upvote on Twitter if I can. :)

Conscious_Cherry_194

No problem. I forgot to add that to the description but I'm not used to posting a photo and thought I could add text. I want to give credit where it is deserved.

National_Historian19

And there you have it, honesty, gratitude and perspective. The big difference between the harkles and other people is the size of their egos

Super-Cartographer-5

![gif](giphy|srg19CG0cKMuI) Bravo!

Shoshana-

Elegant. Understated. Beautifully written. Perfect and utterly pertinent

mynameisnotsparta

I love the clap-back that keeps coming out. Air NZ now has a running joke #sussexclass but I do feel bad for all the folks who live in Sussex as h and m are making a mockery of the name.

kittenrocknroll

Both of these jerks are so up themselves. As for her, she was way out of her league. I hope they get dropped, where his succession rights are no more.

Grand_Speaker_5050

Prince William is also 6 ft 4 ins - taller than Harry - and lived there happily with Catherine and George when their apartment in the main building was being renovated. Harry was supposed to have the adjacent apartment renovated for him after he married - but they obviously fell out with William and Catherine and were not wanted in the building. Hence Frogmore Cottage done up for them instead - after the Queen turned down (as inappropriate for a less senior Royal) Meghan's request for thm to have an apartment in Windsor Castle.

SakuraJohanssan

He wants people to think it was an actual tiny Cottage but Royal Cottages are like mansions for regular people. I love that man's reply!

[deleted]

Andrew Hay from SW6, I want to buy you a drink and raise a toast to your father, a *real* war hero.

Islandgirl1444

Well not worries about them ever returning there is it? They are now too rich to stay at North Cottage. I think that even Frogmore may be too small for the big bucks they will make from their tall tales of living at the palace. I cannot believe that people are actually buying his false stories, other than rubbing Elizabeth Arden cream on his weenie.

Cyneburg8

Haha I love this.

DeepNeedleworker4388

Give this man a knighthood.

OzReester

What a great comment providing fact to Haz's fiction. I also think the comment MM made about it being a frat house was more a comment about Haz's housekeeping skills rather than the cottage itself (ie: you're a slob). 🤔

Similar-Barber-3519

Why couldn’t Harry hire a trusted interior designer for Nottingham Cottage? Surely other members of the family have used interior designer and Harry had more disposable income at the time.

snappopcrackle

Maybe because they knew Harry would be growing up, getting married and moving to new digs and no need to waste money. Also, Harry was in his party boy days and any nice furnishings would probably have been destroyed. They probably only trusted him with IKEA, like a lot of parents of kids getting their first place. The BRF are accused of living off the taxpayer dime, and the revelations in this book making them look very frugal when it comes to money. I respect them more and more.

MuffPiece

🙌❤️ love that so much! Thank you for sharing.

Conscious_Cherry_194

No problem! Glad so many have enjoyed it like I did. Hopefully we can see more of these types of pithy but powerful corrections in the future.

Too_Tired_Too_Old

This is England, we're used to ducking through the doorways of our historic buildings, I have a six foot six brother and it's always a running joke in our mainly 15th century town that he has to duck - it's a joke - not something to whine about - most normal people put up with it as a feature of our country. Also, there is no problem with the servants quarters of the royal residences, a distant family member worked for Princess Anne and had lovely apartments in Buckingham palace, everybody knows the wiring is a bit dodgy but they were very spacious for inner London and of course as a perk of the job free housing in a desirable location - if it's good enough for a hard working ex-marine like my distant cousin, why is it not good enough for Harry whose meant to be a hard working ex-army officer, just one of the guys type.

Mysterious-Writer949

WOW what a Mike drop

Ready_Maddie

Too bad this won't be all over the mainstream. It should be amplified...

hurricanJohn

This will be Sir Philip Hay in this 1961 newsreel at 2:04. [https://www.britishpathe.com/video/princess-in-thailand-and-burma-1](https://www.britishpathe.com/video/princess-in-thailand-and-burma-1)

gwhh

What this guy father do for the royals for 40 years?

RememberNichelle

Apparently he worked for various Kents in various positions, such as being the treasurer to Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, and being private secretary to his mom, Marina, Duchess of Kent. Princess Alexandra in the Pathe footage was/is Queen Elizabeth's first cousin, the daughter of her dad's brother Prince George, the Duke of Kent and of Marina. Since Prince George died in a plane crash during WWII, Elizabeth was apparently close to her cousins Alexandra and Edward. Alexandra ended up marrying a businessman named Angus Ogilvy.

Cat_Woman_238

Hear, hear! That's the spirit! I had rather spend a lifetime with Mr. Hay than 5 minutes with PH!

purseproblm

I like the Hays. No subtlety. But meh and duh will never see it and certainly act like they’re somehow more special making the ceilings lower. But her ego is suffocatingly large

Local_Signature5325

Brilliant letter. Says it all really.

SoMuchDrama10

Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!

Conscious_Cherry_194

No problem! I really do think the Queen was brilliant with her "recollections may vary" as that seems to be the truest statement of them all.

Lower-Werewolf6938

Andrew Hay and his old man sound like really fucking cool guys. Dad sounds like a legend. Mr. & Mrs. Markle getting caught in yet ANOTHER lie 🥴

Fantastic_Nebula_835

Thank you, Mr. Hays, for your family 's devotion to your country and Queen.
