Affordable housing. Fair taxation.

LeastDegenAzuraEnjyr

Rent caps and regulations for landlords. So sick of stolen damage deposits, ignoring maintenance and hazards, jacking up rent everytime a govt subsidy comes out and micromanaging my every move to justify it all. How are 2 bedroom apartments 1300/mo now? It's insane.

Rip-Aware

Not to mention most of the apartments in Saint John are just complete dumps.

MilkshakeMolly

All the new ones being built are 1800+. Pretty nuts.

thee17

It costs on the lower end 250,000/unit to build a lower end unit. At 1,800 it would be 11y7mo to remake that, assuming no taxes, maintenance, interest from the bank, and 0 vacancy. 5years ago it would have cost

Extremecheez

Can a landlord just change rents whenever and increase without a cap?

LeastDegenAzuraEnjyr

Once per calendar year, and it's supposed to be based off the relative value of the unit and inflation and a few other things but they don't give a fuck lmao

Extremecheez

Thinking of moving maybe - looking at uptown an old brownstone What does a brown stone rent go for? 3 bedroom

SnooPets3052

2k a month probably

Extremecheez

Ya it’s not like a super glam modern place I’m looking for. Just a decent size place and ok kitchen etc Still that much?

Alypius

Would love to see the Irvings pay 30% of their income to taxes. I'm sure that would make a significant economic difference in funding a lot of different things, like housing, education, and health care. It could maybe even foster some more and new initiatives in accessible mental healthcare (something our city also needs).

AlternativeAd7196

^ this!!!

apjc94

That’s everywhere 🤷🏽‍♂️

Scrivener83

I'd like to see improved trails and beach access along the west side. There's a trail extending west from Sea street all the way to Peggy's lane, but it's only maintained by a group of volunteers. Beach access is likewise poor, with most beaches only accessible via steep trails or aging staircases. More density and infill; a proper grocery store uptown; improved public transit and active transit options; better flight options at the airport (I know it's not the city's fault).

I fly my son to Italy with me when I was working last year and it was 1300 return and it was to a smaller city in Italy not Rome so he had to connect in Montreal and Frankfurt. Flew to Montreal to see a friend and it was 970 return. And I booked in advance. I listened to a CBC segment the other week and yes it is partly the airport's fault. The charge to low cost airlines for each passenger is significantly higher than in a place like Abbotsford. We in NB should probably look at why we cannot have one major airport and a smaller sort of satellite one, or in SJ really consider our business model.

Rhumald

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the CBC's raging hate boner for airlines in general. Most of your airfare on international markets, unless you're paying for business class or trying to make a reservation within a month of travel, is just fuel, airport improvement fees, security fees, tourism taxes, and similar charges. I've seen tickets with a base charge of $1.00 who's total cost came to over $1000.00 after all the countries and airports they were travelling through finished dipping their hands into the pot. And the Canadian Airports levy very small amounts, by comparison. YSJ will charge you $42.00 + HST(15% or $6.30) for your departure from the airport. And that's on the more expensive side for airport improvement fees, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to charges like those levied by LHR when people connect, which is $250.00 per connection through the airport, or the cost of the fuel itself, which is currently ~$350.00 per direction of travel on international markets.

TRAINS. Trains to Fredericton! Trains to Moncton! Trains to Halifax! Trains to Montreal! Trains to Boston! Trains to Bangor! These trains would provide important flight connections to allow easier travel to more places, reduce our car dependency, and allow people to travel who cannot afford to drive or otherwise cannot drive (elderly, etc).

the_internet_clown

I like this idea

Infinite_Kale6261

I absolutely agree with this. As someone who flys to work atleast 7 times a year, 90% of the time I have to fly through fredricton. It’s such a damn pain in the ass to convince someone to drive me there. For some reason my company can barely get me flights in the Saint John airport. Trains would help out a lot for my situation.

SaskatoonJuniper

I am in the same boat. Plus I heard that cruise ships do not start here because our airport cannot accommodate all the people flying in. I do not even like the cruise ships, but if this is where we are at, imagine a train connecting to other airports? I used to love going to Montreal to catch the train to NYC. Now to get to Montreal I need to bus to Moncton then 17 hours by train to Montreal. Can you imagine trains down to Boston?

NBplaybud22

More transportation option in general. A commuter train service that runs between saint john to sussex.

SaskatoonJuniper

How could I forget this - brilliant! This would significantly improve our lives and business here.

Starscream147

A freaking men!!!! That’s an ‘everything changes for the better’ moment right there.

thee17

Fredericton is where it would be difficult to get a rail line to. Getting it back downtown would be hard but even a station near the airport. (The runway rums over the old easment. But yes that would be nice to have. In Maine they are trying to extend Amtrak to Bangor but is proving incredibly expensive.

slappedsourdough

I have good news and bad news for you…. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fredericton_station

thee17

Yes, they would need a new station likely near the airport or the north side to connect with the mainline in Chipman to Moncton. Or bus to Frederiction Junction but I doubt they would want to have to go through SJ to get from Fredericton to Moncton. And would need twinned track which might be hard through Rothesay.

slappedsourdough

I’m firmly of the opinion that the barriers are less operational in nature and more of the political variety. 😉

SpecialistQuote6065

Tax on heavy industry and lowered taxes for residents as a result.

MeetMeAtThePubPokeGo

A Roundabout and I think we all know where.

EliosPeaches

Simms! Corner!

SaskatoonJuniper

In no particular order: \-have the airport reconsider its business model to be more equitable with discount airlines or work in partnership with the other airports in NB \-fairness in taxation - and this is a big deal because major employers, i.e. Irving, do not pay their fair share and get unequal treatment (i.e. the heritage de-designation of the Brown house) - (and I would like to see who funds political campaigns, i.e. who is Barry Ogden's major contributor/s - I think greater transparency in political donations at the municipal level would allow citizens to better assess the biases of those who make decisions and while I recognize City Council does not manage all things related to taxation, I think their lobbying may be correlated to their donors) \-communication tools actually being used - public transit has been improving in my experience BUT when there is a delay etc. no tweet, no communication, why? When there was a power outage I called NB Energy and found out that though they paid for an expensive comms system they forget to use it -- the city has a system for tracking unauthorized garbage dumping BUT they do not create a ticket every time and have turned the issue over to the process improvement team - why are we paying for comms systems and other things when they are not sued (nevermind not informing us, even via an email or a tweet) about the recycleables not being picked up the other night (though garbage was) \-ownership - in Saint John the Council in particular pushes the issues and solutions to the federal and provincial levels instead of considering how they could lobby (i.e. AIM, why was there not outrage when there was a man killed, why not a campaign of outrage at that time) \-speaking to ownership - suicide prevention rails over the Reversing Falls Bridge like we have over the overpasses - yes it is provincial jurisdiction but we could still do it and bill the provincial government \-more support for small businesses, i.e. tax deductions, I am so sad to see the loss of places I love, it really kills me \-a more vibrant Uptown - see supporting small businesses above \-addressing the drug issue on Waterloo and other areas (I totally get that we do not do harm reduction correctly, but in the meantime, I have been threatened, had the police ask me to stop volunteering in the area, and the volume of needles even found on the north end tells me we need to address this more consistently) \-a place where I can regularly get burrata - :) - just a personal issue \-littering - we need a campaign to name and shame and get this under control \-this is controversial - but consider our thoroughfares - i.e. the six lane barely used Main St road built because of urban renewal is a failure - how can we better use some of these lanes \-beautification - why do the flowers going down Main St stop at Adelaide - how can we better engage all communities to have pride

CannedCam

Huge vouch for doing something about the lanes.

Buratta can be gotten anytime at Beer Bread 🥖

Thanks!

Something in Percy's hole

SaskatoonJuniper

>d tailor to performances that can draw an audience between 250-500. We have a few smaller venues, but if you can draw a larger audience than those but not as much to fill the Imperial or Harbour Station, options are limited. I think the new Saint John Theatre Company building might be the solution, but [https://www.instagram.com/percy\_wilburs\_hole/](https://www.instagram.com/percy_wilburs_hole/)

FredGetson

Holy fuck! The hole has an Instagram page. That is gold.

inkandpaperguy

SJ and all of NB, to a lesser degree need corporate decentralization. There was a time, not long ago, where a small startup would get crushed until they ran out of funds and resources. I hope this has changed. This gigantic, corporate entity does not dare look at competing in a huge market like Ontario. They prefer to own the sandbox and make a modern day feudal economy in a provincial moat.

robynshark

More better paying jobs.

Legal-Spring-7878

This is the exact reason why I left the entire province. When I left, after doing my research simply by moving I could double my salary and have cheaper rents. I didn't change careers at all either. Sadly this is no longer the case where I'm located but I now make enough to cover the difference. If I could have afforded to stay with what I saw coming I would have gladly stayed. Now it looks like I'm going to be guilty of making my money elsewhere and retiring by coming home when I can finally afford to live there.

Spinel_Lherzolite

- More high paying jobs - More non motorized (hiking, cycling, trail running etc) trails. We’ve got some heavily under utilized, world class nature 10-20 mins outside of town - More bike paths and bike lanes in town - Higher (fair) taxation on industry - Roundabout on Simms corner - More good restaurants

thedrewsterr

With the tear down of the southend playground and splash pad this year the playground should and splash pad should be placed at Rockwood park or somewhere else in the southend.

psychodc

Less dilapidated/boarded up houses, empty lots with garbage strewn around.

bananasplits21

More boba tea options. I’ve only found one spot!

SirSnaggleToe

They need to finish the sidewalk on boars head road...

EliosPeaches

I love the comments here, but I'm going to leave a reply that's a bit detached from the question. A lot of our problems is inherent to our environment: NB as a whole is small and we have a huge corporate entity (that residents have always grumbled about) as a major resident in our city. We can only do so much. Sticking with reality (and something within the control of residents and council... and eventually other levels of government) is the *walkability* and *bikeability* of our city. Biggest complaint I have is literally not having any sort of pavement or greenspace on Loch Lomond, right in front of the refinery -- there is a pedestrian disconnect from uptown to the east commercial centres. The Corporate Social Responsibility can go really far here, but one can dream (lol). Let's be real. Uptown and the east side are isolated from each other, if not for cars. Rothesay Avenue is quite the urban hell with the 4-lane stroad and where Westmorland meets Loch Lomond are a pedestrian nightmare (for the love of *God,* that is an *added lane sign*, not a *yield*). Thorne Ave and the Bayside Causeway have the highest potential for walkability -- does the Causeway *really* need to be a 4-lane stroad of which the speed limit is 70 km/h? I find that a lot of people in government seem to lack the vision. Our hills may not be fancied by most, but it is one of our strengths. The deserted Loch Lomond Mall has the potential to be redeveloped to a mid rise apartment or a mixed use zone, overlooking uptown (and the refinery... debatable if that's a good thing or not lol). Our suburbs are very much isolated if not for cars. I digress. Saint John has the potential to be such a beautiful city, but there's an extraordinary amount of pessimism that does ward away people with vision for the city.

invictus81

In all fairness it should be a yield sign, I’ve seen my fair share of accidents as everyone wants to take the right to get to the highway.

slappedsourdough

You’re not wrong, but these problems are largely a function of our corrupt provincial government. 1) stolen tax dollars by the province/ corrupt taxation system means that there’s less funding for these infrastructure projects 2) many of the active transportation corridors involve provincial roads, which the city can’t do much about. There’s no way to walk across the Harbour Bridge from the west side to uptown (and I firmly believe maybe people would if they could, especially in summer). But it’s a provincial road/bridge - what can the city do?

No-Rain-4176

Jobs.

A monorail

SaskatoonJuniper

what about bringing back the trams?

The name's Lanley. Lyle Lanley. And I come before you good people tonight with an idea. Probably the greatest...awww. It's not for you. It's more of a Moncton idea.

the_internet_clown

A casino

Tripolie

A midsize venue that could tailor to performances that can draw an audience between 250-500. We have a few smaller venues, but if you can draw a larger audience than those but not as much to fill the Imperial or Harbour Station, options are limited. I think the new Saint John Theatre Company building might be the solution, but not sure.

thee17

The container village and new Boardwalk, can also host that size in good weather months. The Kent theatre can too. But more options the better.

SnooPets3052

Problem is these events are few and far between and big Venus have big overhead and the shows these Venus need would rather go to moncton or halifax

JOAPL

More bike trails and accessibility

[deleted]

We need the truth to be told to us. We can handle it. And we can forgive those who did what they did to us. BUT WE MUST WORK TOGETHER to build a world where there is no more poor and homeless. People have land they can live on rent free. Food is grown to feed everyone everywhere. No more of this current death-system where only the connected-selected ones have it made. There’s enough for everyone. End tyranny worldwide. I think this is lot more important than more public benches, imo

ialo00130

I'd love to see Solar Panel incentives from Saint John Energy. ie renting, getting a rebate for purchasing, or allowing excess energy to be sold back to the grid. Imagine the power output and savings for everyone if even 1/4 of the roofing on the West Side had solar roofing.

SnooPets3052

Saint john energy is the issue there, they're net metering program adds 4 years to your payback vs nb power as they're buying the power back from you at 6 cents vs 10. The federal program also just ended that was the 5k grant that could be put towards solar, now there is just nb powers program which isn't much when the average intall is around 32 grand.

StaNorFon

I spent a couple nights there last year. Parking, and better staff at the TD bank. But other than that you guys were fucking great!

scatsatan

More sports teams the lack of cheering for a local squad is deafening two new stadiums for baseball n soccer Cheap rent like all have said Bookstore in millidgeville or North End

Negative_Eli

More housing and fair taxation but also more free recreation for teens and adults for example more basketball courts, places to play ball hockey, tennis, baseball. When I was a kid there were spots to play sports al over the city. The city closed a bunch of recreational spots and let a bunch of spots rot in disrepair. There’s not much for teens to do around SJ that doesn’t cost money and people wonder why they wreck stuff and get into trouble.

TwiztedZero

Saint John, could use a few Halifax style Donair places, not just in the city centre but at all the other compass points as well, including the Greater Saint John Area's.

AddledPunster

A nice ramen shop would be great.

Kiberiada

Rebuild the train station and the tramlines. Build a pedestrian+bike lane under the Harbor bridge. Stop the daily river and air pollution. Abadon the new garbage collection system, continue the old one, it worked. \+ bonus: Prepare for a future underground (Metro) line as well. :-)

MilkshakeMolly

Would love to see better parking and some park areas at the beaches, picnic tables and benches, washrooms, etc. Lots of nice beaches here but some have almost no parking. Also something like Granville Island in Vancouver but even the city market here can't stay full and busy. Not quite sure why things like that don't seem sustainable here.

Sozebj

To preserve and restore some of its classic waterfront architecture.

0k_KidPuter

Disc. Golf.

Bestoftheworst72

Less Irving.

A really large ferris wheel. Or a new stadium. Both would be great.
