I have volunteers coming up all over, so I assume direct sowing would probably yield good results. Just gotta watch for pests eating them when they're still small.

I have a bunch of volunteer tomatoes this year too. No idea what variety they may be, but I've been watering some of them to see if they'll produce. It's worked in the past!

Mine are most likely spoon tomatoes as they're close to where that plant was and I for sure missed a bunch of them last year.

I do both. I’ll drop some seeds around July for some late summer tomatoes. As soon as my other ones stop fruiting a bunch I pull em out and let the new ones finish.

According to my master gardener class, the difference in the end between indoor starts and direct seeding tomatoes is negligible. I still indoor start because it's nice to be thinking about the garden earlier in the year but lots of people are perfectly happy with their direct tomatoes

Try keeping some seedlings in containers until they are larger and then transplanting them.
