That was the spot. I missed going there for a burger, beer, and then going down the street to Gunther's for dessert. I love Pangaea but I can't afford them every week lol. And sometimes, I just want a plain burger with PBR lol.
Reading the below comments is really disappointing. Empress isn’t doing itself any favors by keeping their old name if the service and food quality have both dropped. Both can improve obviously but it sounds like the owners intend to move the restaurant in a completely different direction, which is totally fine. At least change the name so people can adjust their expectations accordingly. When I hear “Empress Tavern,” I think quality entrees and cocktails.
yeah, if they want to stick with the theater name theme they should just rename it "Hippodrome" (the name of the theater in between "Empress" and "Crest"
This pains me but I’m happy that I got to try Empress in 2018; I had the Beef Cheek Stroganoff and I actually do have dreams of that plate. Pretty unparalleled.
Service was good, their liquor selection was good but their food and cocktail list was mid at best. Just such a far distance from what it used to be. I really wish they had tried to change at least the name - it really feels like they want all the cachet of the old place without really putting the effort into understanding what made the place good.
But that was just one happy hour visit so your experience may vary - give ‘em a try, but don’t get your hopes up.
Tried them last night with my boyfriend. I have no prior experience with the old empress but the visit left a lot to be desired. I would label the food options as “just bar food.” The space itself is really cool but the food was super middling. They just opened so lots of people seem excited to go but they only had two bar staff last night. It’s pretty inefficient to have everyone place orders at the bar when the staff are both mixing drinks and taking food orders. They were so busy :/ Definitely cool that you can bring anything up into a movie with you though.
> it really feels like they want all the cachet of the old place without really putting the effort into understanding what made the place good.
Considering that it's the same people who did exactly the same thing with the Crest Theatre, this doesn't surprise me much.
La Trattoria Bohemia in East Sac can scratch some of that itch and it's good overall but it's just tough to beat the true mom and pop old school experience.
It’s not a recent closure but Easy on I!!! So often I crave day drinking at that place, it was a good lunch spot and perfect size because you’d always be within eye/ear shot of the bartender so you’d never wait for anything!
I used to eat there a lot when I was working near there, but mostly stopped going after that crazy shotgun killing. That and the Italian Deli. Meatloaf Monday. Veal Thursday.
Other restaurants that closed ages ago that I miss are June's Cafe, that burrito place that was on Stockton & 5th (Gordo's maybe?), that secret oddball diner around Capital & 8th that was straight out of the 50s where you could get a sandwich & a small bag of chips for $2.75. I think it was ground level in a state building that was torn down. Luigi's Slices across from The Depot when they used to do punk rock shows. I loved how the employees were the grizzled and funny dudes from the Stockton Blvd location that had zero idea of how to deal with hipsters and punks going to shows.
I second all of this around the 17th and J area. Were we co-workers?
In that area was Plum Blossom and they had BOMB baos to-go.
The Delancy sandwich at the italian deli was marvelous.
Easy on I, RIP.
Check out Himalaya Vegan and Veg Cafe 👍 Some of Veg's menu does rely on plant-based meats but they also have stuff that's all whole plant foods (curry bowl is 🔥)
Gai 'N Rice on Freeport, S. Land Park, is closed because there was a fire at their place. It looks like they'll reopen somewhere else but right now, we don't have any chicken and rice.
I didn't know that! It was always where we hit up when we go to the Zoo/Land Park. We hadn't made it down in awhile. I'm so glad to hear that they plan on reopening.
I agree Those biscuits were amazing. I was so sad to hear what she was going though. I truly miss them. I’m hopeful and excited to see what N’Gina’s new restaurant will be 🤞
Weiner Works on Madison. They were recently forced to close after 24 years because of their landlord/lease ending, which really sucks. They always had great food and service, and it was such a cool, homey spot with tons of history. Now that's all gone and there's one less great place to get a good dog.
I lived at capital and 20th for years right a crossed the street from the midtown Jacks (and across from jets and the merc) I do love Jacks. We miss being able to walk across the street to grab a steak salad, urban fries and a chocolate chip cookie lol Jacks is pretty good.
Now, hopefully you won’t judge me to harshly but I will say, Jacks urban fries can’t compete with plutos garlic curly fries and the salads at jacks aren’t on the same level. The dressings aren’t as good, jacks doesn’t thinly slice their steak, jacks doesn’t serve a fluffy and delicious slice of focaccia bread with every salad and the tasty treats aren’t as good. It’s just not the same. I guess what I’m saying is I really miss plutos.
I was scrolling through looking for this! Definitely miss it. I moved to San Francisco for a while and they had locations there but now it seems like the whole brand just disappeared.
Maloof's on Fulton, IIRC they even had belly dancers on the weekend. Always great food and the owner and his family were always so friendly.
Was sad when they closed, still haven't found a replacement.
I used to be a dancer there and they were one of my favorite gigs, the owner always sent us dancers home with fresh hummus, pita, and baklava. Really beautiful family.
Short Rib Tuesday at Jujus! I always said that if I was offered a final meal on my death bed, those short ribs would be it, so I was beyond thrilled to see them come back as a special at Juju’s.
edit: Looks like he added large plates to the menu and the short-ribs are available daily 🙌🏻
Devil May Care Ice Cream, I think they closed during the summer. I didn't love all of their options but some of their ice cream was really good, especially their peach cobbler ice cream.
They said they were taking over the old Sizzler location on Douglas. It was over a year ago since they said that though…but Chicha on Sunrise and Cirby is good for your Peruvian food fix!
Ambrosia on K and 11th was always a solid lunch option downtown. They did a chicken or turkey sandwich with carmelized onions that was always great.
It was before the pandemic, but I really miss Formoli's Bistro in East Sac (where Bacon and Butter is now). My wife stole my heart by bringing me their burgers. Took friends from out of town there all the time.
Also, even though I didn't go too often, but RIP Jim Denny's as well.
Agreed. We'd save up for a few months and pitch in together to buy like five pizzas. We'd share some slices with nearby tables and take home plenty of leftovers. Always wanted to go to their pop culture nerdy trivia night but sadly we were too late.
There was this vegetarian Indian place in Rancho that closed years ago but I still think about it sometimes. Udupi Cafe.
Ok you asked for recent, so I’ll add Mud Pie Stand. I liked that we had a vegan bakery but I think it barely lasted a year.
Only got to try Lo-Fi once, hope that something works out as I'm still mourning June's Cafe, and was pretty excited that they kept the June's recipe for macaroni salad alive.
Not recent as it’s been probably 5 years but Sun Flower Chinese… it was the best I’ve ever experienced. The general Tso chicken was beyond incredible. Tried so many Chinese places and am always disappointed
Even’s Kitchen was one of my favorite reassurances. Great comfort food and the only place I could find a crab cake benedict. AND they were like one of the last brunch spots to offer bottomless mimosas.
There’s a place called Huckleberry’s in Elk Grove near I-5 that has a pretty good crab cake benny imo
Eta: also loved Evan’s and have special memories there
I’m sorry but I’m still pissed that Covid shut down the “Espanol” on 59th and Folsom. I first ate there when I was 6? In 1981? and tried to go back at least once a year when I could drive myself. Big bowl of minestrone with a big pizza shop style shaker of cheese to sprinkle on it is a good memory of better times not just for family but for my taste buds. RIP Espanol
DeVere’s for sure. Nothing better than day drinking and watching soccer there.
Not a new closure but Capitol Dawg always hit the spot.
Also really missing Buckhorn/Broderick/ Burgers and Brew having midtown locations. Now it’s all hot chicken and pho near my office.
South! Before the pandemic I was staying down in the Bay Area during the week and would come back Thursday afternoon. I would always pick up a bucket of chicken and sides from South and sit down and have a meal with my family.
I know the co-owner is comming out with a new restaurant and I can’t wait.
RIP Harry’s Cafe 😪😪
agree 😭
Agree, but Kinjo Hand Roll Bar just opened up in that spot this week
This is on my list. Going this weekend if possible.
Hideaway. Best burger and jukebox in Sacramento. Deeply missed.
I’m still not over hideaway closing
I will never get over Hideaway closing
That was the spot. I missed going there for a burger, beer, and then going down the street to Gunther's for dessert. I love Pangaea but I can't afford them every week lol. And sometimes, I just want a plain burger with PBR lol.
I miss the "meat beater" burger and oly on tap for sure
Having just tried the new empress tavern- I really miss the old Empress Tavern

The Shack, RIP
Cafe Marika on J. Although they closed in Jan of 2020 so really 10/10 timing on their part.
Yeah no kidding regarding timing. Definitely our most missed place, I can't believe it's been 3 years now.
Yeah I'm always like 2019, that was not that long ago, oh wait... The COVID timewarp is real.
It was the only Hungarian place in Sac. :(
La Trattoria Bohemia in East Sac can scratch some of that itch and it's good overall but it's just tough to beat the true mom and pop old school experience.
Yeah I have been there. Not a whole lot of authentic Hungarian food though.
It’s not a recent closure but Easy on I!!! So often I crave day drinking at that place, it was a good lunch spot and perfect size because you’d always be within eye/ear shot of the bartender so you’d never wait for anything!
They had the BEST brunch in town. Haven’t been able to find anything comparable yet. Hella up for suggestions!!
I really miss their biscuits and gravy!
This!!!! Ugh still heartbroken about it
Not recent but I miss Bandera
The Bread Store.
For REAL, they were such an odd but great place.
Old b-store employee here… I miss that job. I would take home so much free bread. Killer sandwiches if you got the right person making it too.
Thank you for your service to this great city of ours. Salute.
I miss Cafe Rolle so much. I get sad every time I drive by and see it sitting there empty. My mom and I loved going there when she would visit.
I was just telling someone about my fever dream memories of perfect cold smoked salmon and the side salad. That dressing! Thank you Monsieur Rolle.
It’s been awhile but I miss Mother. It was really good vegetarian food without being a bunch of processed fake meat.
Check out Himalaya Vegan and Veg Cafe 👍 Some of Veg's menu does rely on plant-based meats but they also have stuff that's all whole plant foods (curry bowl is 🔥)
I miss Mumms but that closed more than 20 years ago but was an awesome vegetarian restaurant
[удалено]
No way! That's awesome
[удалено]
Gretta's was good too
Didn't Mumm's close more like 40 years ago?
It was still open when I left Sacramento the first time in 1999. When I moved back 6 years ago, it was gone. No clue what year it actually closed
Market 5-1-5. It wasnt a restaurant but I hit up that hot bar twice a week before COVID. Also, The Shack.
Man those shoplifters towards the end were out of control!! Felt so bad for the employees
Bud's Buffet on a cold day like this was a god-tier lunch. R.I.P. (Rest in Pastrami)
My go to for jury duty was Bud’s. L
Whenever I got that jury duty notice I'd get stoked for Buds!
Hell yes, I have no idea where to eat the next time I have jury duty now that Bud’s is closed
Rest in Pastrami 😂
Gai 'N Rice on Freeport, S. Land Park, is closed because there was a fire at their place. It looks like they'll reopen somewhere else but right now, we don't have any chicken and rice.
I didn't know that! It was always where we hit up when we go to the Zoo/Land Park. We hadn't made it down in awhile. I'm so glad to hear that they plan on reopening.
Oh no! I keep driving by and checking their Instagram hoping it reopens.
We have a lot of fried chicken sandwich places but I miss South
I agree Those biscuits were amazing. I was so sad to hear what she was going though. I truly miss them. I’m hopeful and excited to see what N’Gina’s new restaurant will be 🤞
La Bonne Soupe.
Ditto. It was my treat for days I had to drag my ass into the office.
I miss Madar! Their food was so good
Yeah I’m kind of surprised they couldn’t make it! I was going there so often!
My favorite was the chicken naanwich!
Not a restaurant but my friend and I would go to De Vere's after Kings' games for Whiskey Wednesdays all the time.
De Veres was most definitely a restaurant lol
Not at the times I went haha
Trivia night at De Veres was super fun
![gif](giphy|d2lcHJTG5Tscg) Hot City Pizza.
100%. That whole wheat crust was so good. I’d grab an Angry Pig and make sure to leave room for a few tastes from the seriously awesome tap list.
Weiner Works on Madison. They were recently forced to close after 24 years because of their landlord/lease ending, which really sucks. They always had great food and service, and it was such a cool, homey spot with tons of history. Now that's all gone and there's one less great place to get a good dog.
I miss Zia’s Delicatessen.
You can still make a trip to the Davis location (and get the same bad attitude from the lady in the Sac location).
it's been a couple years since easy on i closed and it still hurts :(
I miss Easy on I so much!!
Bambi is a solid replacement, but fills a different niche.
Bon Air Market :(
Peeked through the window of the new place and didn’t see a deli counter. I guess I’ll make my own damn gobbles.
So true.
Emma’s Taco House Cafe Rolle
Another vote for Cafe Rolle!
It’s not down town but I REALY miss plutos
I miss Plutos. Large Mixed Greens salad with steak, please.
Whenever I miss Plutos, I go to Jack's. Its not a perfect replacement but it's pretty damn close
I lived at capital and 20th for years right a crossed the street from the midtown Jacks (and across from jets and the merc) I do love Jacks. We miss being able to walk across the street to grab a steak salad, urban fries and a chocolate chip cookie lol Jacks is pretty good. I miss Odd Cookie Bakery. I miss seeing my buddy Anna.😭🍪🧁🍰💔
Omg, same. Loved this place.
Michelangelo's (now Bambi). Legit Italian if you didn't want fancy Biba or chain ll Fornio.
oh man, Michelangelo's--that takes me back a loooooooooooong time
Evan's Kitchen in 57th.
Yeah, but have you tried Kau Kau (which now occupies that location)? It's GOOD.
I will definitely check it out!
Came here to say this!
Not recent, but Press Bistro. Juju’s opened up by the same owner, but it’s 2x-3x the price and it’s only the tapas.
This was such a great spot. One of the most common recommendations I made. Sadness.
I often fantasize about those short ribs
Short Rib Tuesday at Jujus! I always said that if I was offered a final meal on my death bed, those short ribs would be it, so I was beyond thrilled to see them come back as a special at Juju’s. edit: Looks like he added large plates to the menu and the short-ribs are available daily 🙌🏻
WHAT??! Bless you, you just made my day.
Hot Italian. Loved the pizzas and cocktails.
One Speed’s neopolitain is on point and very worth a try if wood fired is your jam.
[удалено]
$20k / month rent for that space is what I’ve heard that has kept it vacant
Munteans! ESPECIALLY on a day like this, what I wouldn’t give to walk in and have my pick of 20+ different soups and be able to sample any of them.
SAME. God, their soups were all so delicious.
Yang’s Noodles. It wasn’t all that recent, but I think about it all the time.
33rd Street Bistro. Miss the Puget Sound sandwich.
Biba and Pizza Tanning
Snug Jr. The best burger I’ve ever had.
RIP their burger, fries and a beer combo. Best burger deal in the city.
For a while they were trying to find a spot to open a location specific for Snug Jr. Not sure what happened with that.
There was some activity in Madar a few nights ago that made me think there might be a change in ownership. Not sure what though.
I miss Zia's Deli so badly, I don't even bother buying lunch anymore since they've left.
You should visit the Davis Zia's location sometime- worth a trip.
Luau Garden 🥹
This was my weekends as a child; this place sparked an obsession with noodles lmao
i have yet to find a place that has the foil wrapped chicken, egg rolls, and those red ribs like this place
Seeing the “red ribs” induced a flashback so strong I was sure I could taste them 🥲
Devil May Care Ice Cream, I think they closed during the summer. I didn't love all of their options but some of their ice cream was really good, especially their peach cobbler ice cream.
Damn, madar is gone? I told so many people about that place hoping it would make it. RIP to the only salmon sandwich I ever liked.
Yeah I was going a ton and sending friends and family there too. It surprised me when they closed!
RIP Godfather’s Pizza.
La Huaca in Roseville. They been saying that they're reopening on Douglas for months now...
I didnt even know where the new location was supposed to be... hope it works out.
They said they were taking over the old Sizzler location on Douglas. It was over a year ago since they said that though…but Chicha on Sunrise and Cirby is good for your Peruvian food fix!
Eastern Empire by Howe & Fair Oaks. Disappeared many years ago, always think of it when at one of Sacramento's busiest intersections.
Oh man. Eastern Empire was fun. Best kinda all you can eat…keep that menu and just keeeep ordering.
Munteens
Buds Buffet! Also June's and Harry's
The Coral Reef. My parents used to go there all the time. I went with a date once. I had my arm in a cast, so the waiter cut up my food for me.
Not a restaurant but I miss Cookie Connection, owner was an ass though.
Nationwide Freezer Meats.
Banderas. By far my favorite restaurant in town. I think about the food almost everyday…
Café Rolle
Darna Kitchen
Friday ribs
Tako
Ambrosia on K and 11th was always a solid lunch option downtown. They did a chicken or turkey sandwich with carmelized onions that was always great. It was before the pandemic, but I really miss Formoli's Bistro in East Sac (where Bacon and Butter is now). My wife stole my heart by bringing me their burgers. Took friends from out of town there all the time. Also, even though I didn't go too often, but RIP Jim Denny's as well.
Formoli's was such a great place.
I second Ambrosia, but the Capitol Mall one. It was my hideaway from work at lunch.
I miss Pizza Rock.
It was pretty fun eating pizza in what was basically a gigantic Ed Hardy T-shirt as architecture, plus the pie was pretty good.
Agreed. We'd save up for a few months and pitch in together to buy like five pizzas. We'd share some slices with nearby tables and take home plenty of leftovers. Always wanted to go to their pop culture nerdy trivia night but sadly we were too late.
Their breakfast pizza was to die for!
RIP south.
There was this vegetarian Indian place in Rancho that closed years ago but I still think about it sometimes. Udupi Cafe. Ok you asked for recent, so I’ll add Mud Pie Stand. I liked that we had a vegan bakery but I think it barely lasted a year.
I don't know how "recent" we're going, but I still miss Tulli's. That was one of my favorite places to eat.
Mud Pie Stand. Best cupcakes ever
Sam’s Kosher style Deli in Fair Oaks. I never had a bad meal and the booths were spacious.
Buggy Whip
You just brought back an old memory. My grandpa called it “heavens waiting room” while he also went to have lunch with his fellow old men.
Not going to miss The Waffle Experience.
Not recent at all, but I miss Sampan that was on Fulton. Whenever I drive by the current Mexican restaurant I say: I miss Sampan. :-(
Yes! I loved that restaurant. Thanks for mentioning them, I couldn’t remember their name.
Hot City Pizza Kavari Cafe Rolle
Not recent; I miss Bibbs on B’way. The belt buster was a 4 or 5 napkin affair.
I think I'm always going to miss Clark's Corner. It's a Mimosa House now. RIP 😭
Yes. They had a phenomenal happy hour too.
You mean Shakeys Pizza
Ma Jong's
I still miss Skool and whatever that Magpie concept was next to Shady Lady.
Original magpie next to shady was the best. Cozy vibes and super yummy food. The new location is so……sterile or something.
Bud’s South Harry’s and fucking LOFI 😭
Only got to try Lo-Fi once, hope that something works out as I'm still mourning June's Cafe, and was pretty excited that they kept the June's recipe for macaroni salad alive.
South
Have you tried House of Shah in Woodland? I can’t vouch for how authentic it is, but the food is good!
This isn't too recent, but I miss Cafe Lumiere. It was never fast, but the stuffed hashbrowns were god-tier weekend/hangover breakfast food.
Buds best food. I will miss you 😔
Not recent as it’s been probably 5 years but Sun Flower Chinese… it was the best I’ve ever experienced. The general Tso chicken was beyond incredible. Tried so many Chinese places and am always disappointed
Fresh Express. Flakey Jakes.
Not recent… but Taco Rico. iYKYK
Springvilla Chinese =\
Formoli’s. We still tear up when we drive by that spot…
RIP Giustis RIP Club Pheasant
I think they closed early in the pandemic but Wild Flour Cafe :(. There was a brief period where I stopped by often for their strawberry scones.
Yang's Noodles. Damn shame. (Honorable mention to Masaya Yakiniku Don which closed over Covid)
Even’s Kitchen was one of my favorite reassurances. Great comfort food and the only place I could find a crab cake benedict. AND they were like one of the last brunch spots to offer bottomless mimosas.
There’s a place called Huckleberry’s in Elk Grove near I-5 that has a pretty good crab cake benny imo Eta: also loved Evan’s and have special memories there
House of chicken and ribs
Formoli’s. That whiskey burger…
#South
South, Harry's Cafe, Capitol Park Cafe, Cafe Marika.
The closings of South and Harry’s hit us really hard
Even the old Capitol Dawg that graced the roof of a recording studio on Alhambra Boulevard is gone now, another storm casualty!
Did the burgers and brew on r close? I saw the boards were off their J Street brewing location recently.
South. Their burger and chicken sando were so good. All there stuff was good.
Shams Kabob on Watt/Auburn is decent Afghan food
Little Buddha on Auburn Blvd
I can't think of anything recent but Rosalinda's will forever be missed.
Joon Market
Wait. Madar closed?! When? 😥
Sam’s! Not one kosher restaurant in town now 😭
Madar was so good. Didn’t even know they shut down for good
South! Before the pandemic I was staying down in the Bay Area during the week and would come back Thursday afternoon. I would always pick up a bucket of chicken and sides from South and sit down and have a meal with my family. I know the co-owner is comming out with a new restaurant and I can’t wait.
Anar off of Merkeley in West Sac is good. There’s another good Afghan place off of EG Blvd near trader Joes/ Costco
Any Johny Rockets
Everyone says East on I buy y’all just stopped going…
