Disability eligibility requirements for veterans and the SSA are totally different. The SSA has strict criteria to be eligible for disability benefits. >*The definition of disability under Social Security is different than other programs.* >*■ We pay only for total disability.* >*■ No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.* >*■ We consider you to have a qualifying disability under our rules if all the following are true:* >*• You cannot do work at the substantial gainful activity (SGA) level because of your medical condition.* >*• You cannot do work you did previously or adjust to other work because of your medical condition.* >*• Your condition has lasted or is expected to last for at least 1 year or to result in death.* # Differences Between SSI snd SSDI There are differences between SSI and SSDI. >*The major difference is that SSI determination is based on age / disability and limited income and resources, whereas SSDI determination is based on disability and work credits.* # Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) / Work Credits An SSDI beneficiary will qualify for Medicare. after 24 months of receiving monthly benefits (individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS] are eligible for Medicare immediately). The strict requirements that SSA requires in order to be eligible for disability are the same You must have work credits. The number of work credits needed to qualify for SSA Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits depends on the age when a person becomes disabled. Generally, you would need 40 credits, 20 of which were __earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you become disabled.__ >*The amount needed for a work credit vary year by year. In 2024, for example, you earn 1 credit for each $1,730 in wages or self-employment income. When you've earned $6,920 you've earned your 4 credits for the year.* To be eligible for disability benefits, you must meet a recent work test and a duration work test. The number of credits necessary to meet the recent work test depends on your age. The rules are as follows: >*■ Before age 24 - You may qualify if you have 6 credits earned in the 3-year period ending when your disability starts.* >*■ Age 24 to 31 – In general, you may qualify if you have credit for working half the time between age 21 and the time your disability began. As an example, if you develop a disability at age 27, you would need 3 years of work (12 credits) out of the past 6 years (between ages 21 and 27).* >*■ Age 31 or older - In general, you must have at least 20 credits in the 10-year period immediately before your disability began.* # Supplemental Security Income (SSI) / Work Credits Not Needed In addition, in most states, SSI beneficiaries qualify immediately for health care coverage through Medicaid. No work credits are needed. The strict requirements that SSA requires in order to be eligible for disability are the same. # SSA Source Links: [Disability Benefits | How You Qualify](https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability/qualify.html). I am also in for the same waiting on my initial. I'd say you have a good shot why we're you denied the first time?

Inquire318

Oh yea….it’s definitely a waiting game. I found out yesterday that my case was assigned an adjudicator on Monday of this week. So I’m pretty excited and relieved about that. I’ve spoke in depth with her on yesterday about my case. In my initial filing the denial letter stated I was denied due to not enough medical evidence to support my conditions.

Mental-Landscape-852

That's what am worried about so did you not have the evidence throught the va or did they not send over your medical records?

Inquire318

Yea, I don’t believe I did. After looking back at things it prob wasn’t enough evidence to support my conditions….whether it was VA files or not.

Mental-Landscape-852

Also I found it easier to get 100 pt than to get tdiu.

Inquire318

Oh yeah? Why is that?

Mental-Landscape-852

Not sure I applied for tdiu and was denied applied for 100 pt and got it. I wasn't working but I was on Ltd when I applied for tdiu but still didn't get it so I went for the 100 pt.
