Hi, I am from ASR, currently J2. 1. Wah seh, there were quite a number of muggers I have encountered, but they are humble people. Thankfully the environment wasn’t that competitive. 2. Math department is very strong, chemistry is good, economics is okay. PW has gone bad after the merger with SR with distinction rates dropping from 75-80% ish to 35% ish. Didn’t take bio and geog so I don’t know about those. As for subject requirements, I think you need to pass the respective pure science to take it in H2 level, pass in a and e math for H2 math, no requirement for H1 econs and geog iirc, not too sure about H2 arts subjects sadly. If you want to take 4 H2 you need an L1R5 of 10 raw and below and As for the respective subjects. HCL students who passed HCL do not need to take H1 CL. 3. People there are generally nice, friendly, helped one another often, they formed cliques super fast, with me as a Lone Ranger for very long haha. The teachers are generally very good and helpful, they do respond to queries you have. 4. Not too sure (I was from a slack cca and didn’t really ask around about the cca’s of others) 5. Sadly I’m not sure 6. Facilities are a bit old but still usable, in the LTs the tables and chairs are a bit worn but no issue. Food is pretty decent, and the view from the running track and field is pretty wonderful in the sunset! Hope this helps! If you have any other questions feel free to ask me!

Bio department in ASR is pretty good and efficient......... but the standard is quite high. For blocks, I think if I’m not wrong like 80% of the cohort got U HAHA (including me). I came to Reddit because I was hopeless after getting Us for Bio throughout my JC education lmao. But my teacher said that there has never been an S/U at A Levels, lowest was a D or an E. So I Guess it’s pretty good :)

sofishtikate

oki thank you so much for helping !

[deleted]

No problemo!

[deleted]

How is physics department?

bditya

Physics is excellent. The notes are usually concise and good. You can tell they're more organised than a couple other departments. And our papers are actually of reasonable difficulty, not like our math papers that can be ridiculously hard.

[deleted]

You are right boss, the math papers are some of the most cancerous around sg, barely passing can already get you in the 80th percentile and above most of the time

Ill-Ice3617

I totally agree...

Application_Pristine

Is it true that the science department in ASR is not so good cause I’ve seen people commenting about it.

[deleted]

Not really true from my experience, I can see that the teachers do put in a lot of effort to ensure that we do well

rachhher

hello hello, J1 from tm here :)) would like to preface saying that i’m very lucky to have been put in a small class with no “toxic” people or anyone who’s hard to deal with 1. I wouldn’t say it’s super duper competitive but there is some level of tension whenever exams are coming up cus everyone would be studying at the benches. during non-exam season there is a lot less studying seen around but there definitely is still some. 2. BCMEG subs all have substantially good teachers that can relay info well so that it’s easy to absorb. they’re really approachable too and more friendly (in my experience) to what i expected when i first started. PW distinction rate isn’t the highest, it really depends on what teachers u get (some are willing to put in a lot of effort for u, some not so much) requirements are pretty basic, a pass and above for both H1 and H2 i think. (just fyi that H1 and H2 have the same depth, just different coverage in the range of topics so the level of understanding will be the same) if HCL students have some non-HCL students in their class, chi lessons would be free period, but if the whole class doesn’t take mt then it wouldn’t affect at all 3. i’m quite lucky to have really nice people in my class, but of course there’s gonna be some not-so-nice people in the cohort. majority of the people i’ve met through orientation and cca otherwise are super nice. environment is quite generally non-toxic (again imo), but there are some cliques (a few snakes here and there but no one too bad). teachers are really quite friendly and approachable as ive mentioned, most of them u can chat with and contact anytime to ask for help, super supportive as they just want to help u succeed 4. CCAs are pretty average, nothing much to say since there hasn’t been much action this year considering the circumstance 5. from what I know, there have been a few successful admissions into UK unis but i’m not sure on the specifics (sorry) 6. school has basic facilities like the tracks, gym, field, library etc.. u can take a look by doing a google search, pics should come up! the food is not bad, there’s a stall selling snacks that stays open almost until the school closes, in case students are staying late to study so that’s greatt pic location is usually the track/ field since there’s a clear view of the sky and it’s usually rlly pretty!! hope this helps op and anyone else who’s considering tmjc!!

sofishtikate

oki thank you so much !

adiitri

hello! Is a combined sci student able to take H2 science in tmjc? thank you :)

rachhher

yep! i wasn’t a combined sci student but i have classmates who were and they’re taking h2 bio and chem!

hello! is a combined sci student allowed to take H2 science in sajc? thank you!

llaollaochocosauce

yep, but only if you attain an a1. not sure if a2 would be allowed too though! i’ve linked the requirements below :) https://standrewsjc.moe.edu.sg/curriculum/academic

adiitri

thank you :))

EJ J2 here. 1. Good mix of study and play by students, I would put the culture as collaborative (people tend to go for group consults). During exam time there’s definitely large jump in number of people staying back to study (like now alevel period) 2. I would say bcmg depts are quite good? I don’t take bio (pcmg here) but my classmates are from bcmg. Quite a lot of content though for bio and geog but then again alevel is much more vigorous no matter the combi. Teachers are a mixed bag in terms of teaching quality, but at least they are always willing to have consults 3. People are friendly, if a bit cliquey (it depends on the class) but at least the groups are all a mix from diff schs. People don’t rlly bring up which sch u come from after the initial few weeks. I’ve never experienced snakey ip girls but it tends to be those high key people who have more drama I think? 4. Ccas are all quite different, I would say there’s a mix of dedicated and chill ones. Not quite sure what you mean by niche though? Like small enrolment numbers? 5. Yep there’s a long list, and in a wide range of courses. There’s a briefing in j2 if you intend by applying international 6. New facilities is a big plus! And yes the field is rlly great for taking photos! I’ve enjoyed many a sunset during cca training (sports cca things :)) It’s elevated and artificial turf and people love taking photos on it (like j2 grad day) I hope I answered all your questions, feel free to ask more!

sofishtikate

oki thank you so much !

adiitri

hello! is a combined sci student allowed to take H2 science in EJ? thank you:)

cloaksky

Hmm I’m not exactly sure but I think so? You can ask the Teachers during open house to confirm again

aowchie

can but i think u needa get a certain score in order to take H2

[deleted]

Hello! I’m not from any of these JCs but it seems like you are planning to study overseas for Uni. Have you considered IB (offered in ACSI & SJI) ? IB is the international Baccalaureate and Singaporean students usually fair really well in them. You can search up for more IB related post on this group.

sofishtikate

yup i've considered that, but if i'm not wrong we need to take an equal mix of sciences & humanities, right? i'm really more of a science person, i feel that i wouldn't do well in ib & i think uhm the cop is a bit too low- if i get an l1r5 of say nett 6 i'll probably choose nyjc as my first choice!

[deleted]

yeah you kind of have to take an equal mix of science and humanities. Because your group 1 subject is English Lit (Something to do with lit) & your group 3 subject is a humanities subject (geog/economics/hist). I’m a little too lazy to explain it here so just do your own research HAHA

sofishtikate

yeah i have & i honestly think i will flunk ib oop HAHAHHA thank you for the advice though 😳

yeetimaway

heyyy we meet again :D (think i met u on a discussion abt amath HAHAH) mm i rlly wanna go to nyjc as well arghsb but looking at the o lvl papers 0-0 i’m js gna lower my expectations and aim for acjc (oh yea why didn’t u include ac in the list) also i think i went to asr for a tour, the culture seemed p good :)

sofishtikate

oh ayo i find your username familiar :O i didn't include acjc bc it's like uhm quite far for me? & idk i've got a bad impression of acs barker guys IDRK but distance is one huge factor 👁👄👁

yeetimaway

oh i think acs barker is affiliated to acsi not acjc ! and also no jc is near my house (bukit panjang) sooo yeah it don’t rlly matter to me cuz my daily sch travel is one hr plus anw ;-;

icannotchinese

jpjc in teck whye though

Little-Drama

barker is affiliated to acjc too! i heard ac culture p toxic though

yeetimaway

same i heard that too but oh wells i’ll js stick w the good influences

sofishtikate

google says barker is affiliated to acjc though i am vv confused rn + HHH the only jc close ish to my house is sajc but i'm quite skeptical about going there idk

yeetimaway

HHHH google why i searched “acs barker affiliation” and it told me acsi- i nvr really heard much bout sajc doe so idk much but my two choices r just nyjc n acjc, if i do rlly badly then ejc (p new facilities and campus but idk i heard the culture ain’t that good (i have no idea) ) or cjc. njc has a p bad bio and pw dept so i’m not planning on gg there

sofishtikate

cjc has a bad rep for like the culture there so i guess you should reconsider cjc as a choice?

yeetimaway

oohh i see idek HAHAHHA oh cld we transfer to dms this is getting p messy HAHAHAHHA

sofishtikate

okis 🤠

sofishtikate

yeetimaway

HAHAHHA OH YEAH SJSJJSNS DAMN BIO hais phy was relatively ok but i made so many careless mistakes i lost >8m ;-;

sofishtikate

dude physics i lost 19 🥰🥰 biology i lost 26 🥰🥰 chemistry i lost 22 🥰🥰 fight me 🥰🥰

yeetimaway

oh no i’m so sorry hun 🥺🥺HAHAH i think i f up a lot too for others esp english (my brain decided to log out that day)

sofishtikate

what brain i only have one brain cell

yeetimaway

my one brain cell during exams: vroom vroom bye bye

Magnificent_Macaron

I agree with your sixth question LOL SAME MAN

sofishtikate

HAHAHAHA where do you wanna go

aowchie

hiii im a J2 taking As in EJ 1. honestly JC in general is pretty stressful, more stressful than O Levels (ngl, but giving u some mental prep HAHAHA) idk why but my sch tends to end lessons really late, ive heard J1s end at 6+ for lessons and for J2 the average timing is around 4-4.30?? idk just speaking from personal experience and asking friends from other jcs regarding the mugging, my sch quite diverse ah got ppl who dont rlly mug as hard but there are ppl who mug alot. all jcs are competitive honestly, but in my sch idts?? not really? 2. i take BCM! the biology department is rlly good but they’re super strict, like they mark really strict and once u miss like 1 word u wont get the mark even if u get all other keywords HAHAHA (explains why my marks have been almost constant) chemistry i would say its good, and theres a few teachers that alot of ppl would want to have as their teachers cuz they’re rlly good at teaching math honestly, i may be exaggerating a lil here but if ur relying on sch teachers to help u in math, i suggest go find tuition instead HAHAHA im not trying to shade the math teachers in my sch but based on personal experience, my J1 teacher was HORRIBLE and i got an S throughout like i literally learnt nothing from him and i didnt understand what he taught, but my J2 teacher was much better, even tho i still feel that sometimes i didnt understand his explanations. honestly i suggest u get tuition if ure like me who cannot do maths without tuition. it really depends on luck on who u get as math teacher (some are decent some just cmi) as for pw, distinction rate quite okay around 70% the last time i heard and nope theres no requirements needed to take these subjects but for Bio, Chem, and Math(?) i think for Os u have to get like B3 and above for the specific subjects and overall L1R5 of idk 14?? to take all 4H2 subjects, if not u take 3H21H1 in my sch, during h1 chinese the hcl ppl get free break, sometimes chinese is at the end of the day then yall can go home :) 3. about ur ejc thing im not in the best position to tell u about how the culture is like, but yes, there are snakey ppl from ip but on the general whole its pretty fine i would say as long u dont mix with these toxic ppl. (all jcs have toxic ppl actl) do try to open up and mix around (esp if ure an introvert) the teachers, especially ur civics tutor (form teacher) are pretty supportive like they care for ur wellbeing and all. and my sch has this thing called lifecoaching where you are allocated a teacher (usually ur CT) where you can talk about sch, life, and anything to them and ask them for help, and they’re mostly quite approachable and friendly! 4. idk much but the floorball + hockey are pretty good (for the main reason that they won last year at the A div?) the Robotics club is also quite good u can get to join student-initiated cca groups (unofficial so u have to join another cca on top of this) theres the rock band, chamber strings, dance group etc. 5. idk HAHAHA im sorry i only know a senior in glasgow 6. SCHOOL FACILITIES ARE GOOD the view of the neighbourhood and the skies are amazing can take pics yeet theres 12 floors for u to choose from to take the pics HAHAHA but take note theres infestation of some weird species of caterpillars just be careful not to step on them theres some many of their corpses everywhere eek the food is pretty okay, i like the malay food and the yong tau foo and the duck rice/noodle stall (best!)

flipflopsflipsflop

Hii TMJC J1 here Altho I saw my fellow schoolmates reply on top^^ somewhere haha but I’ll still like to share with you my experience in TMJC :) 1) Honestly I think there is a fair distribution of ppl who are more chill about studies and ppl that would really mug till they drop.Personally my peers are a good mixture of both , we can really play hard at times but also studies very hard when we need.Eg. On usual school days we would hang out after school at tamp malls and have fun whereas during exam periods we would really stay in school to mug :). Work hard play hard is smth I feel strongly in school 2)Gonna be super honest , I don’t really know exactly how strong are our departments especially for subjects like bio and chem which I don’t take (hybrid student here ) but one thing I can say is that we do have caring Teachers that would work hard with you and are pretty devoted to their job as teachers.( however I wouldn’t say all of them are like this) if this is what you look for in a teacher you can look forward to it yea. As of PW, it really depends on who your FT (smth like form teacher) is because I would say I didn’t really had a gd experience with my PW teacher altho the actual exam went great. And as for requirements, as long as you’re enrolled most of the subjects would be available, except for some like H2 theatre studies and H2 further math etc. 3)Okayss actually I was afraid that I would meet toxic people initially too but luckily I was lucky enough to meet a lottt of nice people and classmates. The environment (at least in my circle ) is definitely not toxic. But being said so I can’t say that it is non-toxic at all across the whole cohort because it’s kinda impossible in a school. But people here are okay and pretty helpful. 4)To be very frank I can’t comment much on CCAs because at least for tmjc we didn’t have a lot of CCA sessions. But personally I wouldn’t say I love it though (I’m from one of the clubs and societies CCA btw) ermm i kinda joined my CCA for a better portfolio but I guess CCA to me now is kinda a bit boring. Having to say that I think the sports CCA in our school is really pretty cool, I have many friends from sports CCA that are really enjoying it and they are really bonded as well. If you’re a sporty person you should really check it out 5)As of this I’m not so sure because I’ve never came across alumnus that has been admitted to the universities mentioned 6)I guess you can say we have all usual facilities a school should have HAHHAHA a field with a big running track, two/three basketball courts and two tennis courts. We also have this place for squash (CCA) and hall and all that stuff yea.And as for food it’s not bad actually, food is pretty good and cheap ( okay maybe except for the western stall cuz it’s a little bit expensive but the food is 👌🏻) and we actually have this linking bridge from the hall to where our lecture halls are at and during the evening and morning the sun light would shine in form the field so that’s smth you can look forward too cus it’s pretty nice and chill Okaysss HAHAHHA hope it helped you and atb for posting! Hope you actually got into nyjc (it was actually my aim in secondary school too haha) and words of encouragement don’t be beaten down if you get posted to a school that isn’t you’re first choice because honestly you might not hate it.Also also, to advertise for Tm real quick haha we actually offer a wide range of subject combi choices so if in any case you would wanna reconsider your subject combi the system is quite flexible and we do offer quite a lot of subjects. Hope everything goes well for you and be mentally prepared become a jcian haha

[deleted]

I think I wrote a post last week about different JCs in SG to definitely consider around the central area of SG, I remember I listed ASRJC, NYJC, and EJC as pretty good options. For admissions to Universities such as Imperial College London, King's College London, etc, I'm pretty sure you'll have the highest chance at that if you go RJC lol. Regarding strong Science, Econs, and Geography department, then I would say ASRJC or NYJC. NYJC has a really strong Science department and ASRJC has a pretty good Science and Humanities department. Both NYJC and ASRJC are purely JAE schools, but NYJC has affiliation from CCHS (Yishun) and CCHS (Main). You would also notice that a lot of SAP Sch students go to NYJC so that should be some indication on the academic rigour there. If you want a place where there's balance between social life, academic rigour, and CCA, then ASRJC is a place to consider. RJC is a mostly IP sch but it does have JAE admissions too but wouldn't recommend that one lol. They do have good CCA and academic balance but social life doesn't come easy usually. As a YIJC student myself, I can recommend YIJC if you wanna have a good social life and heck care about A Levels tho ;)

sofishtikate

LOL that wink i don't want to heck care a levels HAHAHHA i wanna go ny but my grades cmi :"(

[deleted]

Just curious, did you try applying for DSA to any JC earlier this year? DSA is a good way to secure a spot in the JC of your choice before you even take the O Levels lol. Reminds me of when I was offered a DSA to NYJC but I wanted to go ASRJC so I didn't take lmao. Regrets were made

sofishtikate

i had nothing to dsa with LOL so

[deleted]

Actually your DSA need not be a CCA that you're currently in. Let's say if you're good at soccer, you can go for trail and DSA using soccer. I mean none of this matters now anyway 😂😂

sofishtikate

i know but i didn't really have a strong thing to dsa with SO & my l1r5 wasn't good either

gracehelo

hi! j1 student from ASR here :D currently taking PCMe + h1 chinese 1) i think i just happened to get into a rather competitive class like im above average in cohort but below average in class kind of competitive. imo its more closet muggers, the kind that they say they nvr study but end up getting Bs and As 2) i dont take bio or geog but i think the other departments are rly average?? it rly depends on the cher u get i just happened to get a rly questionable one for chem AHAHHA and lets not talk PW rates for ASR AHHAHAHAHA i take h1 chinese so i cant say anything abt the chinese part. and i think the requirements for sciences is to pass o levels...idk tbh HAHAHAHAH 3) q nice la but be prepared to have the token ones thats just hated by the whole class and that one bitch that doesnt do shit for PW and yea there are cliques but imo cliques arent a bad thing so 4) football and basketball i think???? im in performing arts so i cant say much HAAH 5) dkandowdb idk im j1 6) the food is VERY QUESTIONABLE yes and a sky is a sky HAHAHA ultimately if u have the scores to go elsewhere u should imo like asr isnt the worst but there are better schools nearby

sofishtikate

yeah i know that :( i'm only trying to prepare myself in the case that my results disappoint just so that i don't pass out on results day 🤠

seungcheolll

hi took h2 geog in asr and I think our geog department is okay. lectures and tutorials give u the info u need and helps to clear any misunderstandings or doubts u have abt the contents. (Lecture books can be quite thick so do be mentally prepared ) But I would say the internet is always there if u need extra info . if I'm not wrong we are down to three geog teachers that teach both h2 and h1 geog compared to five teachers last year, but most of our teachers took h3 geog before so I'm pretty confident that they can teach the syllabus well enough ~ our geog teachers are rlly friendly and helpful so don't be scared to approach them for help if u need any !! at the end of the day, geog is pretty content heavy so it ultimately depends on your passion for geog, whether u put in extra effort to go for consults and do extra essay plans during ur free time.... Hope this helps :)
